YOGA IN THE PARK Saturdays, June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, July 7, 14, 21, 28, Arboretum 9:30 AM to 10:30AM, $10 per date (pre-registration is required) Let s welcome certified yoga instructor Karen Weis and join her on Saturdays for an hour of relaxation in the out-of-doors at the Hunterdon County Arboretum. Karen will be offering morning yoga classes outside in this lovely park that offers beautiful gardens, a historic gazebo, a soothing water feature, a pond side gazebo, boardwalks through the marsh, grasslands and woods. If it rains, class will move inside the building. Pre-registration is required, $10 for each Saturday, sign up for one, two or more. Please bring your own mat. TRAILS DAY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY Saturday, June 2, 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM, meet at the Arboretum, ages 14 and up (children must be accompanied by adult) The South Branch of the Raritan River is Hunterdon s most scenic water trail. Canoe down the river as our guides lead us to take care of our water trail. We will focus on removing all the litter and debris that we are able to get out of the water. We may conduct some minor handsaw and clipping work to make openings or to widen some passages. A safety talk and canoe lesson will be given before departing for the assigned locations on the river. Volunteers will enjoy a light breakfast and a full lunch, thanks to generous sponsors. We will gather in the Arboretum, and participants may leave a change of clothes there for after the event if desired. Please register using a regular program registration form. Participant may bring loppers, clippers, and/or bowsaws, please no power tools. We will provide a continental breakfast and lunch after the event. Please wear long pants and closed toed shoes. Bring any safety gear you want. Gloves and safety glasses will be provided. Westcott Preserve 70 Raven Rock- Rosemont Rd, Stockton, NJ BICYCLE SAFETY CHECK Sunday, Sept. 23, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Columbia Trail, all ages, free Bring your hybrid, mountain, or cross bike to the Columbia Trail! The Bicycle Specialists from HART (Promoting Sustainable Transportation) will be on hand to do a safety fit with your helmet and a safety check on your bicycle before heading out. Helmets are required for children under 17 & highly recommended for everyone else. Then enjoy the beautiful Columbia Trail where you can ride on your own over the breathtaking Ken Lockwood Gorge and continue through historic locations all along the trail. 2 2018 Issue 2 Hunterdon County Division of Parks and Recreation Harbinger 2 SUMMER NATURE CAMP PROGRAM (SNP) SUMMER NATURE PROGRAM (SNP) Our Summer Nature Camp Program is an opportunity for kids entering kindergarten through grade 10 to connect with and explore the natural world. Program leaders facilitate hands-on activities that foster kids innate curiosity about nature and wildlife. Campers and parents alike rave about camp, making it one of the Parks Division s most popular offerings. Leaders for the Summer Nature Program are instructed in guiding children outdoors and are certified in First Aid and CPR. Group size is a maximum of campers depending on session and location, with each leader being aided by an assistant or volunteer. Special canoeing instructors host the paddling clinics and canoe trips with our older campers. Sessions are available at both Echo Hill and the Teetertown Nature Preserve. Echo Hill is located on Lilac Drive in Clinton Township, less than 15 minutes from both Clinton and Flemington. Teetertown is located on Pleasant Grove Road in Lebanon Township, about 15 minutes northwest of Clinton. Both sites offer wonderful and diverse habitats for the campers to explore, including stream, pond, field, and forest areas. Note that camp is held Monday through Friday no weekends. Camp will not be held on Wednesday, July 4 th, Independence Day. The Nature Bugs program is the perfect half-day adventure for your young nature enthusiast. Our Park Naturalists teach about local plants and animals through hikes, observations, crafts, and games. A safe and fun way to foster your child s interest in the natural environment. NATURE DISCOVERY Children entering grades 1 & 2, 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM, $170 (Session B: $150), one-week sessions. This full-day program allows campers to explore all the wonders that the parks have to offer. From searching for wildlife to toasting s mores, Nature Discovery campers enjoy a great introduction to the world outdoors.

3 2018 Issue 2 Hunterdon County Division of Parks and Recreation Harbinger 3 SUMMER NATURE CAMP PROGRAM (SNP) PIONEERS ENVIRONMENTAL CAMP Children entering grades 3 & 4, 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM, $170 (Session B: $150), one-week sessions. Pioneers enjoy activities that foster understanding of habitats, adaptations, and other ecological concepts. Favorite activities such as shelter-building help Pioneers develop their outdoor skills. Teens entering grades 9 & 10, 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM Note: Overnight trip each Thursday off the program, Two-Week Sessions, $355 Teetertown Environmental Camp packs a lot of learning and adventure into an intensive two-week program. The session begins with team-building activities and the opportunity to participate in a high-ropes personal challenge course. On-site activities include wildlife studies and outdoor skills practice. Participants are introduced to backpacking during an overnight on the Appalachian Trail. A flatwater canoe clinic prepares campers for a canoe-camping trip through the scenic Delaware Water Gap during the second week of camp. Throughout the program, Environmental Camp focuses on the importance of ecological stewardship and individual responsibility. JUNIOR EXPLORERS Children entering grades 5 & 6, 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM, late pick-up on trip days, $325 (Session A: $305), two-week sessions Please note that 1 and 2 reflects that there are two counselor groups (total of 20 campers) scheduled for each session of Junior Explorers except for Teetertown sessions A and B, which will only host one group. These two-week sessions give campers the chance to increase their understanding of nature as well as their outdoor know-how. Juniors learn basic canoeing skills on the park ponds before embarking on a day trip on a local river. A field trip allows Juniors to discover nature beyond the County Parks. The Junior Explorer experience culminates in a campout full of fun nighttime activities. SENIOR EXPLORERS Children entering grades 7 & 8, 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM, late pick-up on trip days, $325 (Session A: $303), two-week sessions. Senior Explorers continue to expand their environmental understanding and hone their outdoor skills. Team-building activities, paddling clinics, river canoeing, and a field trip are all important components of the program. Seniors also enjoy a campout night that includes pitching tents, cooking over a campfire, and exploring nature after dark. Registration Information for Summer Nature Camp Program 1. The regular Parks Division Program Registration Form cannot be used for Summer Nature Camp Program (SNP). Please use a SUMMER NATURE CAMP PROGRAM APPLICATION REGISTRATION FORM. This can be downloaded from our website, or pick one up at the Arboretum. 2. Please also complete a MEDICAL FORM and BEHAVIOR AGREEMENT. 3. Children may initially enroll in only one session until April 4 at which time additional sessions are available. 4. All cancellations by participants are subject to a 30% service charge. Cancellations must be in writing. Cancellations made less than one week prior to the start of your child s camp session will not receive a refund.

4 2018 Issue 2 Hunterdon County Division of Parks and Recreation Harbinger 4 CRAFT CAMP June 25 to June 29, 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, ages 10 to 15, Arboretum, $160 (includes materials) This unique program will expose your child to a multitude of crafts. Young artists will immerse themselves creating one-of-a-kind masterpieces. An eclectic mix of artistic media such as clay, felt, gourds, tile, wood, rocks, vines, and recycled items keep interest and enthusiasm high! New projects every year! Sculpt with clay, create with beads, weave a basket or two, and work on visual balance designing with things from nature. Campers should bring a drink, snack, and lunch. We encourage reusable containers. Send children in old clothing and shoes that can get a little dirty. SUMMER CAMPS KAYAK/CANOE CAMP July 30 to Aug. 3, 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM (campout Thursday into Friday), entering grades 8 to 12, $250 This year we have ten new kayaks! If you enjoy the outdoors and water and want to learn how to kayak or canoe, or already kayak/canoe, then is the camp for you. We will start on a pond with getting in and out of the boat and how to paddle and move around. Then we will paddle on local rivers Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday into Friday, we will enjoy an overnight canoe camping trip on the Delaware River. We supply the canoes, kayaks, gear, training, and transportation. Our experienced leaders teach the ways of currents and eddies and how to paddle mankind s oldest craft, with a few new tricks. So come have fun on the water. PERFORMANCE CAMP Session A: July 9 to 13, entering grades 2 to 5 Session B: July 16 to 20, entering grades 6 to 9 Monday to Thursday 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Friday 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Deer Path Park, $245 Children love this Performance Camp taught by Flying Ship Productions, who combine time-tested themes with original music and dialogue and inventive staging and choreography. Children will have the opportunity to stage a musical. The show contains original songs, costumes, props, and dances. The week culminates in a performance and picnic at Deer Path Park on Friday evening at 6:15. In addition to working on the musical, campers also create the set, make costumes and crafts, and participate in theatre and water games. Every child who attends Performance Camp is a star!

5 2018 Issue 2 Hunterdon County Division of Parks and Recreation Harbinger 5 SUMMER CAMPS ART CAMP FOR YOUNG ARTISTS Session A: August 6 to 10, Session B: August 20 to 24 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Arboretum, ages 6 to 10 ART CAMP FOR ARTISTS-IN-TRAINING Session A: August 6 to 10, Session B: August 20 to 24 11:15 AM to 1:15 PM, Arboretum, ages 11 to 15 Either camp $110 (includes materials) Campers learn the principles of painting and drawing in a classroom and outdoor setting, using pencil, charcoal, and paint on a variety of still lifes. We will increase campers understanding of color, composition, and the proper use of materials. Please bring a snack and drink. Dress in old clothing and apply sunscreen. CREATIVE THEATRE CAMP August 20 to 24, 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM (Friday until 4:00 PM), Echo Hill, ages 10 to 12, $150 Campers will learn stagecraft while creating their own play. This production will be guided by the ideas of the campers; characters, plot, and setting are all based on their ideas. Movement, voice, theatre terms, and listening are practiced on day one and built on as the play is developed. We focus on listening to other actors and to the audience. The week culminates in a performance on Friday at 3:00 PM. Campers should bring a drink and lunch. Instructor Joe Nowosielski (website ORCHESTRA CAMP July 16 to 20, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Hunterdon Central Regional High School, entering grades 7 to 12, $190 Instructor Lena Shiffman (website SPORTS FOR A LIFETIME CAMP: Golf & Bowl August 13 to 17, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Deer Path Park, entering grades 5 to 12, $322 with bowling ball or bag & shoes or $270 for camp only This camp is taught by professionals who will teach your child to golf and bowl! We will meet at Deer Path Park and travel by County van to Heron Glen Golf Course in Ringoes. Heron Glen offers a driving range with both grass and mat hitting areas and a large putting green. After a week of practice, we will play some holes on Friday. Each day we will head back to Deer Path to eat lunch from home. Next we will head up to Oakwood Lanes in Washington to learn how to bowl. Their professional, attentive staff will ensure that your child has a great bowling experience. We will stop for ice cream on the way back (our treat)! Orchestra Camp is an excellent opportunity for students to work in small-group situations, as well as working together as a full orchestra. The Hunterdon Youth Orchestra will perform on Friday night on the last day of camp for family and friends. Please specify the instrument when you register; sorry, no piano. Led by the Hunterdon Symphony. HERON GLEN JUNIOR GOLF CAMPS BIRDIES CAMP: ages 7 to 11, June 25 to 28, July 16 to 19, or July 30 to August 2 EAGLES CAMP: ages 12 to 16, July 9 to 12, July 23 to 26, or August 6 to 9 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Heron Glen Golf Course, $299 In this camp run by Heron Glen Golf Course, we will have on-course PGA instruction, including lessons with woods, irons, chipping, putting, and bunker play. 6 2018 Issue 2 Hunterdon County Division of Parks and Recreation Harbinger 6 SCIENSATIONAL: SPACE NINE 3-IN-1 All-TERRAIN ROBOT July 16 to 20, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Arboretum, ages 8 to 12, $161 Wow! Picture this on Mars: The Space 9 3-in-1 all-terrain Martian Robot will be able to do so many fantastic things. Campers will build this and take it home. This amazing robot has its own controller. It can travel on rough surfaces. It can grip objects and can be a fork lift. Campers just make some simple changes. This robot is so cool that different parts move as if it is dancing. You control this. Participants will also be able to build other robots working in small groups. Build a Sumo Wrestler, have Tug-of-War events, and make these robots do creative tasks for you. Robots in this portion of the workshop will not be taken home. Be part of Robot Technology the Sciensational Way. SCIENSATIONAL: CSI-CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION July 16 to 20, 12:45 PM to 3:45 PM, Arboretum, ages 8 to 12, $155 Campers in this program will be super science sleuths. Have fun learning about forensics, crime scene investigations, and crime lab chemistry as you perform as many as 15 different experiments designed to show you just how those tricky cases are solved. Search for the evidence, gather clues, and discover how science can help solve a mystery. Participants will: dust for fingerprints, analyze handwriting, test for blood type using simulated blood, examine hair and clothing fibers, practice chemistry to identify mystery substances, and much more. Participants will then use their skills to solve crimes of the century. SCIENSATIONAL: MODEL AIRPLANES, BRIDGE BUILDING, & ELECTRONIC GADGETS July 30 to August 3, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Arboretum, ages 7 to 11, $155 Build your own rubber-powered model airplane. Use your model as a learning tool in aerospace education, or just have fun building a sound airplane that actually flies when assembled. Have fun designing and building model bridges. Join us in our bridge building contest to see which one can hold the most weight. Learn simple engineering skills. Build six electronic projects. Some of them include a patrol car siren, burglar alarm, and Morse code transmitter. You will learn how the different electronic components work. Sciensational & LEGO Camps: Campers who sign up for both the morning and afternoon session in a given week may bring a lunch and stay through the lunch hour for free. SUMMER CAMPS SCIENSATIONAL: THE ALL-TERRAIN TRACKER July 30 to August 3, 12:45 PM to 3:45 PM, Arboretum, ages 7 to 11, $155 How about some land rover excitement? Build and take home your very own All-Terrain Tracker Vehicle! It travels the rough terrain overcoming objects in its path. Sciensational Workshops will bring its own course for you to conquer. Sand, stones, twigs, and balls will all be part of the challenge. How about a timed race? Campers will also learn about gears. Work in a group with your new friends as you design a robot you can control. Build a Sumo wrestler and be part of our battle box events. BRICKS 4 KIDZ LEGO CAMPS are highenergy, fast-paced settings where kids discover, explore, invent, and create. Each camper will receive a LEGO mini-model to take home. In addition to lots of building with LEGOs, our camps may include games and activities like car ramp challenges and zip line racing. LEGO CAMP: A Galaxy Far Away featuring STAR WARS July 23 to 27, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Arboretum, ages 6 to 12, $150 Blast off into a galaxy far, far away to join the Rebel forces in their battle against the Empire. There will be motorized models based on Starfighters and TIE Fighters, an X-34 land cruiser, BARC Speeders, and even a JEDI Master. Campers will have plenty of opportunity to design and build their own STAR WARS models. In addition to building, there will be lots of games, STAR WARS trivia contests, and crafts to participate in. Bring your imagination and may the Force be with you. LEGO CAMP: ANIMAL GROSSOLOGY July 23 to 27, 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Arboretum, ages 6 to 12, $150 If you re fascinated by the weird but true, wild and wacky, gross and yucky, then this is the camp for you! Spend the week discovering the zany biology of our animal friends. Each day we ll explore fascinating facts about the animal kingdom, focusing on two creatures of the day. Don t be surprised to find actual skeletons and preserved examples of some of the animals displayed. Build two different animal models with LEGOs each day and fill your very own Animal Grossology booklet with crazy and cool facts you learn, complete with a picture of each model.

7 2018 Issue 2 Hunterdon County Division of Parks and Recreation Harbinger 7 ADULT ART SUMMER CAMPS ART BOOT CAMP FOR ADULTS with Lena Shiffman Monday through Friday, August 27 to August 31, 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM, Arboretum, $100 (materials not included) Spend five consecutive mornings in a fun and relaxed atmosphere creating with Lena Shiffman. Use a variety of subject matter, including still life subjects and photographs, and some plein air if the weather permits. Ms. Shiffman will work with students to improve their drawing and painting skills. Students may work in charcoal, pastels, oil, acrylic, or watercolor paints. Students supply their own materials. Beginners, please bring charcoal sticks and charcoal pencils, an eraser, and a medium sketch pad (14 x 18 ) to the first class. All ability levels welcome! THURSDAY EVENING ART STUDIO with Lena Shiffman Five Thursdays, Aug. 2 to August 30, 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM, Arboretum, $100 (materials not included) Don t think you can draw or paint, but would like to give it a try? Everyone has talent, they just don t know it! says art instructor and illustrator Lena Shiffman. Using a variety of subject matter, including still life subjects and photographs, improve your drawing and painting skills. Students may work in charcoal, pastels, oil, acrylic, or watercolor paints. Students supply their own materials. Beginners, please bring charcoal sticks and charcoal pencils, an eraser, and a medium sketch pad (14 x 18 ) to the first class. LANDSCAPE PAINTING: SUMMER MORNING LIGHT Instructor Charles David Viera Session A: Six Wednesdays, June 27 to August 1 Session B: Six Fridays, June 29 to August 3 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Echo Hill Park, ages 15 through adults, $140 (materials not included) Landscape painters through history such as Monet and Renoir were all inspired by the colors offered by working Plein Air from the early morning light. Artists of all levels will get to experience a supportive and inspired instructor to assist them. Working on location at one of the most picturesque sites, historic Echo Hill Park, students will be inspired by beautiful as they improve their skills. Beginner to advanced instruction in drawing, composition, color theory, and the proper use of materials is offered through group and individual critiques, demonstrations, and historical references. Open to students of all levels and working in any medium. Experienced students should bring their favorite medium while beginners should bring drawing materials to the first class where color materials will be discussed. Light easels and chairs are provided. SUMMER VOLUNTEER POSITIONS SUMMER NATURE PROGRAM COUNSELORS-IN-TRAINING (CITs) A volunteer opportunity for teens entering 10 th, 11 th, and 12 th grades. Counselors-in-Training (CITs) will be selected for each of our two Summer Nature Program sites (Echo Hill and Teetertown). Have fun outdoors while building your résumé. CITs are required to attend an evening training session on Thursday, May 31 st from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the County Arboretum. Must be able to commit to a minimum of two weeks during the camp season. To apply: submit an Individual Volunteer Application with a letter of recommendation from a teacher or employer. Applications are available at the Arboretum or on our website (click on Volunteer Opportunities ). COUNSELORS-IN-TRAINING (CITs) for RECREATION CAMPS This is a volunteer opportunity for teens entering 9 th through 12 th grades. CITs will be selected for Performance Camp, Craft Camp, Art Camp, and Sciensational Camps. Teens will assist counselors in many aspects of running camp. This is a great opportunity for on-the-job experience and a boost for your résumé. There will be a mandatory CIT training on Monday, June 11, 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM at the Arboretum. A 6-week summer program, Monday to Friday. Participants build trails and restore habitat while exploring green career opportunities, building leadership skills, and learning about the local environment through field trips, outdoor recreation, and service projects. Take a leisurely walk through nature to collect inspiration and talk about textures and images observed for the clay project. Students should bring a sketchbook and writing utensil for the introspective stroll, to journal and sketch what they see, think, or imagine. We will take those ideas to the classroom and translate them into a clay project! The instructor will supply objects and materials found in nature, but feel free to bring your own treasures to press into clay. Finished projects can be functional or decorative and microwave, dishwater, and food safe. Students pick glaze colors for their projects. Instructor will fire the projects and they will be ready for pick-up by you at the Arboretum two weeks after the class during office hours, Monday through Friday 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM. NATURE POTTERY for CHILDREN Please bring a sketchbook, writing utensil and feel free to bring nature treasures to use. 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Arboretum Ages 5 to 13 Children must be accompanied by an adult. Take leisurely walk through nature to collect inspiration and talk about textures and images observed for the clay project. No experience required. CERAMIC NATURE TRAY for CHILDREN Sunday, June 24, $35 (includes materials) Each child will create and decorate a hand built ceramic tray/dish focusing on textures and nature impressions. CLAY GARDEN STEPPING STONE for CHILDREN Sunday, July 29, $35 (includes materials) Create and decorate a ceramic garden slab stepping stone focusing on textures found in nature. Please indicate on your registration form if you would like a kayak. Join the Parks on the river where we have been paddling for many years. It is fun, educational, and great exercise! Spend a day with nature. Just bring water, lunch, and a smile we will do the rest. We supply the canoes, kayaks, gear, training, and transportation. Our experienced leaders teach the ways of currents and eddies and how to paddle mankind s oldest craft, with a few new tricks. RIVER TRIPS 8:15 to about 3:30 PM, Leave from Arboretum, ages 8 through adults, $35 per trip Your leaders will fit you with a lifejacket and paddle and then drive to the river, where they will discuss maneuvering techniques and canoe safety. Durable old clothes are best, especially wool and polypropylene fleece in cool weather. Sneakers are recommended; no sandals, boots, or heavy shoes. Bring lunch (packed in waterproof container), lots of water, sunscreen, a rain jacket, a hat, eyeglass strap, etc. A complete change of clothing can be packed in a waterproof bag to be carried in your canoe or to be in the van for the trip s end. Join Recreation Leader Patrick Eckard for an overnight campout at Echo Hill. All participants are required to attend a planning meeting on Wednesday, June 27 at 7:00 at the Arboretum. At this meeting, we will plan a menu together, discuss equipment needed for different types of campouts, discuss strategies on packing, and learn how to prevent raids by animals. During the campout, we will demonstrate fire building (several techniques), pitching a tent correctly, knot tying, and using camp tools safely. All participants will get the chance to help cook a meal and be on kitchen patrol. During free time, enjoy Echo Hill pond and trails. When night falls, we will have an evening campfire and prepare traditional snacks. There are no more excuses Let s Go Camping! There is a flush toilet in the lodge, a short distance from the site. July 5 Citigrass The band is a steady feature on the nightclub and festival circuit as well as a nationally-aired recording act. The members are top players on their instruments and have played thousands of private events of all kinds. Citigrass, based in New York City, specializes in a kind of "urban bluegrass," which blends rock, jazz and even classical influences with traditional bluegrass to create a hot, modern sound that attracts a much wider audience than most bluegrass acts. This critically-acclaimed band is a favorite at many top venues and festivals and as well as a regular act at New York City's legendary Knitting Factory. The band appeared recently on ABC TV live from Lincoln Center and is the featured soloist at next summer's Mobile Symphony Orchestra pops concert (to perform with the orchestra). Tom and his colleagues focus on helping all participants learn about the birds, and teach them about interesting characteristics of each species. They will also point out other natural history information about the locations. Please pack a lunch, as stops are not guaranteed. If you have your own binoculars or spotting scope, please bring them. Binoculars are also available for loan. Trips are designed for adults, but mature youths under 18 can contact Tom for approval. Please dress appropriately for the weather. Transport is by County Park vans. All trips leave from and return to the County Arboretum. Trips are recommended for any birder at all levels of ability, unless otherwise stated. NEWARK S PEQUANNOCK WATERSHED Saturday, June 9, 5:00 AM to 2:30 PM, $25 This trip is a tour through the other side of Sussex County into Morris County. This trip offers many of the same species as the annual Sussex Trip but we will visit different locations. Stops will be made around the Walkill and Pequannock regions. Possible sightings could include Golden-winged Warbler, Cerulean Warbler, and Blackburnian Warbler, a variety of raptors, and other northern specialties. The timing is designed to get us in the area for early morning bird activities. (Participants can finish sleeping on the ride up.) BREEDING BIRDS OF HUNTERDON COUNTY Sunday, July 8, 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM, $20 Hunterdon has a rich variety of nesting birds. Last year we went through the western edge of the county. Prior to this trip, we will scout some of the best spots in the County, such as Hoffman Park, Spruce Run Reservoir, and Voorhees State Park. However, the route of the trip may change up to the last moment depending on reports and findings. We will hope to see Bobolinks, a variety of warblers, and more. Two miles of hiking required. MYSTRY BIRD TRIP Saturday, August 18, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, $25 August is a unique time to bird. The breeding season has come to a close but fall migration has yet to start. We will see what type of birding activities are going on and what is being reported in the state as the date gets closer. Based on that information I will determine where we will go birding and what type of bird we will look for. SANDY HOOK Saturday, September 15, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, $25 Sandy Hook is a 2,044 acre barrier beach peninsula that offers seven miles of beach line, salt marshes and a maritime holly forest. The variety of coastal habitats from sand dunes, grasslands, salt and freshwater marshes, thickets and maritime forest offer diverse range of birding opportunities from shorebirds, songbirds, and raptors. Time permitting; we will stop at other locations based on observation reports. A stop at the beach will produce Sanderlings running back and forth with the waves. HOMESCHOOL ENVIRONMENTAL SERIES HOMESCHOOL ENVIRONMENTAL SERIES Second Wednesday of the each month, Sept 2018 to May 2019, Echo Hill, ages: 5-12, 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, $30 per student for all 9 lessons, class size will be limited to 15 participants. This series provided a terrific opportunity to meet with other local homeschooling families, while your child learns about the natural world. Participants will explore a new topic each month and enjoy hands-on activities that foster science, math, language arts and social skills. Program includes homework projects to complete after each session.

Learn all about reptiles and amphibians as we meet a few live animal friends. Students will get to see and touch native turtles and snakes as we learn how these reptiles survive. FIREFLY HUNT Friday, June 8, 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Echo Hill playground, all ages, $3 per person As dusk settles, come watch the sparkling lights of fireflies appear as we learn how and why they light up. We will take to the fields with nets and jars to catch some to study up-close. We may also see or hear some other nocturnal insects. NIGHT SOUNDS Tuesday, August 21, 8:00 to 9:00 PM, Echo Hill playground, ages 8 through adult (children must be accompanied by an adult), $3 per person What are all those chirps and clicks at night? Late summer is a great time to hear katydids and crickets. We will take a night hike and Senior Park Naturalist Laura Bush will identify the prominent insect sounds around us. We may also have the chance to view some insects, bats, or other night creatures. CREATING A CHILDREN S GARDEN FOR WILDLIFE Sunday, September 9, 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM, Echo Hill, grade 1 adult, $7 (accompanying adult attends for free) Come learn how to create a wildlife-friendly backyard by starting with a design plan and making your garden s first animal home. Providing a sustainable habitat for wildlife begins with your family s backyard. When you plant the native species that wildlife depend on, you create habitat and begin to restore your local environment. With your children, create a wildlife habitat garden right outside your back door and introduce them to the wonders of the natural world. Gardening for wildlife will allow your children a way to make a real difference for wildlife and the environment. DYE A TOTE BAG WITH NATURAL DYES Friday, September 14, 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM, Echo Hill playground, ages 10 through adult, $15 How do we get such vibrant colors in clothing? Most of the dyes used today are synthetic and mineral dyes, but years ago people used plants and animals for dyeing. We will begin our program with a walk around the park in search of dye plants. We will select two plants to make big dye baths to fit canvas tote bags. Participants will choose between yellow, gold, brown, and salmon -orange dyes. We will be able to create designs by tie-dyeing the bags, but each bag will be only one color. We may try some other colors out on yarn as well. Meet at the playground parking lot. Plants can be used to dye fabrics and yarn. Try this out by making a tote bag! TEACHING ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE TO EARLY LEARNERS Monday, September 17, 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Echo Hill, ages 14 through adult, $5 Are you an early childhood educator looking for a professional development class? This program will focus on topics relevant to the study of environmental science in early childhood education. Sample lessons and resources will focus on the fundamental understanding of ecosystems as well as healthy environmental practices. Experience hands-on activities for learning through play while integrating environmental science with literacy, math, and art. Certificates provided at the completion of class. The instructor, Debra Reed, has a master s degree in early childhood education and taught preschool for 16 years.

We will meet at Cushetunk Preserve and walk the trails there to hunt for mushrooms. Rich will share his extensive knowledge of identifying mushrooms and will point out unique features of the various species. Oakmoss Mycological Preserve, Rich s property, is our back-up location in case there aren t many mushrooms at Cushetunk due to lack of rain. Chicken-of-thewoods is an exciting, colorful fungus native to Hunterdon County. Join the Seasonal Park Naturalist Debra Reed on a tranquil, relaxing, guided walk through the forest and let go of the stress created by our urban lifestyles. Part of the program will involve sitting and experiencing nature; feel free to bring a camping chair if you are uncomfortable sitting on the ground (or indicate on your registration form that you would like to borrow one). CREATE YOUR OWN WALKING STICK Sunday, August 5, 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM, Arboretum, ages 14 through adult, $32 (includes materials), instructor Brad Koller Imagine a fellow hiker admires your handcrafted walking stick and you can say, I made it myself. Join in the fun and make your own walking stick. Instructor Brad Koller will teach you how to, starting with a sapling, create a personalized walking stick. Participants will be shown how to work with a tool called a rasp. To get your project even smoother, you will also use sandpaper. Linseed oil will be applied to your stick to protect the wood. All materials and tools will be supplied; bring an apron if desired. The instructor will also cover creative pointers for future additions to your walking stick.

A professional Park Naturalist will guide the children during hikes as they discover the diverse field, forest, and pond habitats at Echo Hill. Other hands-on activities include science experiments, field games, and take-home craft projects. BACKPACKING at BEAR MOUNTAIN Saturday and Sunday, September 29 & 30, 8:00 AM on Saturday to 5:00 PM on Sunday, meet at Arboretum, ages 14 through adult, $50, limit of 9 participants on this trip Backpack in Bear Mountain State Park, NY! We will discuss the importance of the Appalachian Mountains while enjoying beautiful scenery. Learn the basics of backpacking as we set up tents, cook, and hike together. The group will meet at the Arboretum Saturday morning and drive to Bear Mountain in a county van. We will start in Harriman State Park near Seven Lakes Drive and hike about 8 miles to camp at the West Mountain Shelter, which affords a beautiful view of the Hudson River. Sunday we will hike 6 miles to the van at the Bear Mountain Inn. All participants must backpack with the following items: clothing, sturdy shoes, raingear, bowl, fork, spoon, at least two liters of water, two lunches, dinner, breakfast, and a sleeping bag. Also, if you have them, please bring: lightweight cooking dishes (mess kit), a stove, a tent, and a backpack. Participants provide all food. On your registration form, please indicate if you will need to borrow a backpack or two-person tent. For new backpackers, or experienced backpackers who want to hike with a group. Participants who have not backpacked with Hunterdon County Parks in the past can expect a phone call from leader Laura Bush to discuss the trip and expectations.

It gives people the opportunity to spend time with a warm and friendly group, make new friends, and get low-impact aerobic exercise all at the same time. It is a great way to keep mentally and physically fit! The instructor, Ed Kerns, has taught hundreds of people to square dance in an enjoyable, fun-filled setting. He begins with simpler calls and then progresses on to those of more complexity, stressing repetition and review for ease of learning. After the 12-week mid-point, students will be able to dance at special area dances, and after graduating, will be able to dance the mainstream program at the many area square dances and join the Flutterwheels at bi-weekly Friday night dances at Echo Hill.
