1 WASHINGTON COAST HIKE June 9th - 13th, 2013 This quarter, the LMS Adventure Education class will backpack, over a span of five days, approximately twenty-five miles from Rialto Beach to Ozette campground. This stretch of Olympic National Park coastline offers challenging terrain, primitive campsites, breathtaking views, wily raccoons, ancient Makah petroglyphs and an ever-changing landscape that provides limitless exploring opportunities. The cost for this trip is $ Make check payable to LMS Adventure Ed. Club. Please familiarize yourself with this packet. Many backpackers enjoy the simplicity of having a no-nonsense diet while in the outdoors. If you would like to supplement the foods on this list, or trade out one food for another, see the Supplemental/Substitute Food List below. Add some dried meat for more variety. Read the following list. Choose your favorites and make a mix. Nuts/seeds: walnuts, peanuts, shredded coconut, sunflower seeds, almonds, cashews, sesame seeds. Dried fruits: raisins, dried cranberries, dried apricots, date nuggets, banana chips, apple chips, dried papaya, dried cherries. Dried meats: beef jerky, pepperoni sticks. Important Note: Put two cups of trail mix into a Ziploc bag for each day of backpacking. * Mountain House - Mountain House makes many low-cost instant dinners. You will want to order a variety of dinners. Examples include: beef stew, potatoes and cheddar, macaroni and cheese, chicken stew, rice and chicken, potatoes and beef, chili mac with beef, spicy oriental vegetable with chicken, vegetable lasagna, spaghetti with meat sauce and lasagna with meat sauce. The best place to order these items is: Expect to wait at least seven days to receive your order. REI also stocks these meals. Supplemental/Substitute Food List The list below contains acceptable backpacking foods. All of the items listed below can be found at the local grocery store. You may supplement the Basic Food List above with items located on the list below. You may also substitute a food on the Basic Food List for one of the items below. If you choose to substitute one food for another, be sure that the calories are equal in value. Breakfast Hiker Notes Nutri-Grain Cereal Bars and/or Pop-Tarts These are quick and easy breakfast foods. Lunch/Snacks Summer Sausage Good cold, but better roasted over the fire. Kavli or Wasa Crispbread, Naan Bread or Tortillas Hard Cheese and/or Sliced Cheese Canned Baby Clams, Oysters or Kippered Snacks Salmon or Tuna Single-Serve Pouches Dinner Nile Spice Instant Soup Knorr Pasta or Rice Sides Top Ramen Tea or Hot Cocoa Marshmallows These breads keep, are lightweight and come in many different flavors. Top these breads with cheese, clams, tuna, etc. These are simple to make and come in a disposable cup. These require about ten minutes to boil. Throw a few baby clams (etc.) in and enjoy.
