2 ABOUT CAMP Our mission is to connect youth to the natural world and engage them in outdoor recrea on, conserva on, and lifelong environmental stewardship. As our campers learn about habitats, ecosystems, flora and fauna, land use, animal care, and survival skills, we hope they will discover the endless ac vi es the outdoors can offer and the benefits of protec ng and conserving open spaces, parks, and wilderness areas. By providing both structured and non-structured ac vi es, campers will develop be er decision making, cri cal thinking, listening, reasoning, teambuilding, personal responsibility, and increased motor and social skills. Camp Loca on: 6005 Ron King Trail Li leton, CO Once on Ron King Trail, follow our Backcountry Wilderness Area program signs down to the check-in area. All Outdoor Discovery Camps, including nature camp, horse camp, and specialty camps meet at the same loca on for check-in. Camper Supply List: Backpack (large enough to carry lunch and water) 2 Reusable Water Bo les (1 liter minimum) Large, Non-Perishable Lunch 2 Nutri ous Snacks Sunscreen Hiking Boots or Hiking Shoes Hat and/or Sunglasses Every camper needs to come prepared to spend all day outside, and should arrive wearing clothes appropriate for the days ac vi es. Expect any clothes worn to camp to get dirty. Younger campers should bring an addi onal set of clothes in case of an accident. Campers in our Specialty Camps may be instructed to bring addi onal supplies prior to camp or throughout the camp week. 2

3 CAMP DIRECTOR SIDEBAR TITLE OUR CAMP STAFF With a passion for teaching and the great outdoors, AnnaKate Hein joined the Backcountry Wilderness Area s team in Prior to her move to Colorado, AnnaKate taught environmental educa on on a farm in Connec cut and Massachuse s and immersed in the ocean off the coast of Rhode Island, as well as comple ng a Masters in Environmental Policy from Vermont Law School. When she s not working, you can likely find her in the mountains hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, or skiing. The Outdoor Discovery Camp is great because of its counselors who are always ac vely engaged in teaching and playing with the campers. Counselors are provided with training, educa onal objec ves, tools for outdoor explora on, and lesson plan support. All of our counselors have a passion for nature, animals, outdoor recrea on, and science, as well as a desire to educate today s youth. Our counselors are hired based on compe ve applica ons, and are carefully selected for their maturity and caring a tude towards children. All counselors are of college age or have already graduated from a college or university and are majoring in science or educa on. All staff undergo background checks. All staff are CPR and First Aid cer fied and are trained in the use of epipens. HORSE PROGRAMS SUPERVISOR Carla Baca has had a passion for horses since a young age, and has worked with horses for over 30 years. Carla enthusias cally joined the Backcountry Wilderness Area s team in Prior to working for the BWA, Carla was a counselor at a farm school and various horse camps, as well as working at an equine clinic. When she s not busy caring for the horses at work, you can likely find her out riding or caring for her own 7 horses, 8 chickens, 2 dogs, and 4 cats. 3

Explorers go on age appropriate hikes, have the opportunity to explore their own interests, build forts in the fairy forest, and work coopera vely with teammates to play interac ve games, conduct science experiments, and help care for our chickens. From arts and cra s projects to live animal presenta ons, even for our youngest campers, every day at camp is an adventure! Staff to camper ra o 1:8 $255 $320 Voyagers will conduct more in depth studies of their surrounding environment and will delve into more complex ecological concepts that reach beyond the Backcountry Wilderness Area. Voyagers go on longer hikes and adventures, par cipate in team building ac vi es, play interac ve games, do arts and cra s, visit with our chickens, and do hands-on science experiments. Voyagers also get the opportunity to either try out their archery skills or go horseback riding! Staff to camper ra o 1:8 $280 $345 Adventurers will study complex ecological concepts and design and carry out their own hands-on science experiments. Adventurers go on long hikes to explore the far reaches of the Backcountry Wilderness Area, par cipate in challenging teambuilding ac vi es, play interac ve games, and learn about chicken care. This group has the opportunity to try out their archery skills, go horseback riding, or go stand-up paddle boarding. They will learn about horse anatomy, horse behavior, grooming, and parts of the saddle and bridle. From horse related ac vi es and games to going on a trail ride, every day at camp holds something new! Campers will par cipate in more challenging riding ac vi es to improve their skill level and become more comfortable and safer around horses. From pain ng magnificent murals to woodworking, you will collaborate with other campers to create art that will decorate the Backcountry for years to come. Campers will go on short hikes and have the opportunity to explore, reflect, and create art in serene se ngs. Campers will work with different art mediums throughout the week. Campers will learn the mental discipline and self-control behind archery, which will be taught daily through either yoga, tai chi, media on, or challenging team building ac vi es. Campers will learn archery from an Olympic level archery coach, prac ce stealth and tracking, study camouflage, learn survival skills, and par cipate in challenging team building ac vi es. Campers will go on a canoe trip, go horseback riding, on beau ful off-site hikes, do team building ac vi es, and explore science and engineering with just the girls! Campers will be with all-female staff and all-female guest speakers and trip-leaders. *This camp includes a night hike and overnight campout on Thursday. Staff to camper ra o 1:5 $410 $485 June & July Come explore the depths of the Backcountry and beyond! Campers will go on strenuous off-trail hikes, will go paddle boarding and fishing, rock climbing in Clear Creek Canyon, and will work on team building challenges. Campers will study the natural history of and human impacts in each area that go adventuring. No prior experience is necessary, just a good a tude. *This camp includes a night hike and overnight campout on Thursday. Staff to camper ra o: 1:5 $410 $485 July Come explore natural history and geology as we go on many adventures! Campers will go rock climbing in Clear Creek Canyon and study the geology of the canyon, will go on hikes at Dinosaur Ridge and Red Rocks, go gold panning in the South Pla e River, and will par cipate in team building ac vi es. Test your limits at a ropes course, work as a team to go whitewater ra ing, summit a mountain, and par cipate in challenging team building ac vi es! Par cipants will also learn kid-friendly nature ac vi es and games that will help them succeed as a Leader-in-Training (LIT). Leadership Camp is not restricted to those par cipa ng in our Leader-in-Training program, but Leadership Camp a endees that do par cipate in our LIT program will receive a $20 discount per session of the LIT program. *This camp includes a night hike and overnight campout on Thursday. Staff to Camper ra o 1:5 $410 $485 May 30-June 2, June 5-9, June 12-16, June 19-23, June 26-30, July 5-7, July 10-14, July 17-21, July 24-28, July 31-Aug4 Are you looking for volunteer service hours or job experience, but s ll want to have fun outdoors? Our Leaders-in - Training (LITs) program gives teens the opportunity to develop as leaders and serve as role models for our campers. They assist with ac vi es for nature camps or art camps, organizing campers, and leading games. If you enjoy working with children, being outdoors, and want to learn new skills, apply now to join our team of LITs! LITs must a end a training session on Thursday, May 25 from 1pm to 4pm. A minimum commitment of two weeks Nature Camp and/or Art Camp is required. A $20 per session discount is given to LITs who a end our Leadership Camp. 11 Before Care Time: 7:30am-9:00am Cost: $45/week or $12/day Pre-registra on is required. This program is held in our free play area at the check-in/check-out loca on. Campers are welcome to bring their breakfast, and may choose from a variety of ac vi es including chicken care, shelter building, horseshoes or other games, or bug catching. Campers in before care will join the other campers for choice me star ng at 9:00am. A er Care Time: 4:00pm-6:00pm Cost: $60/week or $15/day Pre-registra on is required. This program is held in our free play area at the check-in/check-out loca on. Campers may choose between a variety of ac vi es including ac ve and quiet games, chicken care, shelter building, or reading. Campers in this program should bring an extra snack. *Please note, pick-ups a er 6:05pm accrue a $1 per minute fee. Campers must be signed in by an adult each day they arrive at camp. Campers are expected to arrive by the 9:30 start me. If a camper is going to be late, no fy the camp director and we will try to coordinate a mee ng loca on. If a mee ng loca on and me cannot be arranged, you will not be able to drop your camper off that day and a refund will not be issued. All campers must be signed out when picked up from camp. Photo I.D.s will be checked daily. Only the parent/legal guardian and those authorized in wri ng on the registra on packet will be allowed to pick-up your camper. A camper cannot a end camp, and his spot is not guaranteed, un l this packet is turned in. A fee of $20 per camper will be charged for late or incomplete forms. Refund Policy In order to receive a refund, requests must be made two weeks prior to the start date of your camp. Refunds are not given for par cipant dismissal, failure to a end, or sick days. If we must cancel camp at any point for any reason, you will be immediately no fied and a full refund will be given. Session Transfers Session transfer requests will be honored if there is space available and the request is made at least two weeks prior to the start date of the session. Visitors Visitors will not be allowed at camp at any me. All children present at camp must be registered for the camp, with a complete registra on packet filled out. Camper Requirements Campers must follow stated behavior expecta ons and safety procedures. The camp director reserves the right to dismiss a camper when his/her behavior interferes with the rights of others or violates safety procedures. In such cases no refunds will be provided. Due to the outdoor and exploratory nature of our camp, campers must be able to move around on uneven terrain. We will try to make every effort to accommodate every camper on a case-by-case basis. The HRCA has a wide variety of summer camps and programs for children if ours will not be a good fit for your child for more informa on please call If you have any ques ons about your child s ability to par cipate in our camp, please contact the Camp Director at Electronics Policy All electronic devices, including cell phones, are not allowed at camp. We strongly discourage you from sending your child to camp with a cell phone. Your child will not be allowed to use their own phone for any reason, including contac ng you, during camp hours. If a camper has an electronic device out they will be told to put it away. If they refuse to immediately put the device away, or if they pull out the device again later, the device will be confiscated by the camp leader and it will not be given back to the camper un l they are picked up from camp. The Outdoor Discovery Camp staff is not responsible for lost, broken, or stolen items that a camper brings from home. 14

15 Age and Grade Campers are grouped by age as of the start date of their session, but grade level is considered. Contact the Camp Director if you need assistance registering your child with their grade level. Camper Health Campers are asked not to come to camp if they show or have any of the following symptoms within the past 24 hours: fever, vomi ng, diarrhea, chicken pox, conjunc vi s, or any illness making it difficult to breathe. If your child becomes sick during camp hours, you will be required to make arrangements to have him/her picked up immediately. A camp leader will no fy the parent/legal guardian of any non-emergency or illness at the end of the day. Camper Medication No medica on may be administered during camp unless we have proper medica on authoriza on paperwork filled out by a physician. Both prescrip on and over the counter medica on must be in the original container. All administered medica on will be documented in a medica on logbook kept in the camp director s office. All medica on will be stored in your child s camp leader s backpack. The Outdoor Discovery Camps are in compliance with the Nurse Prac ce Act and employ a nurse consultant that meets monthly at all of our camps. The nurse is supplied to us through Children s Hospital and has met all qualifica ons as directed by the Colorado Department of Human Services. Weather In case of lightening, we will immediately take shelter in a grounded building. If you see green traffic cones out blocking our property entrance during check-out, simply follow the cones up to the building where you will be able to sign-out your camper. We do not move inside due to rain. Send your camper with a raincoat or poncho if rain is expected. Ac vi es in the sun or that require lots of movement will be minimized as necessary due to extreme temperatures. All staff are CPR/First Aid cer fied and are aware of the symptoms of heat exhaus on and heat stroke. A large shade structure is located at the check-in and check-out area. There are other tents, outdoor classrooms, and groves of trees where campers may seek shelter from the sun throughout the day. Every camper must bring two full, reusable water bo les (1+ liter recommended). There is access to potable water at the check-in and check-out area to refill water bo les. If there is an emergency or natural disaster such as a fire, flash flood, or tornado while the campers are in the field, the camp will immediately proceed to the nearest secure loca on. As soon as it is determined to be safe, the campers will be removed from the property. If the camp director is not with the camp, the alternate camp director and camp leaders will immediately no fy the camp director of their loca on and evacua on plan. If appropriate, parents will be no fied in order to pick up their children from the camp. 15

16 Transportation Students will be transported in 10 passenger vans or in the company trucks. All students are required to wear a seatbelt while the vehicle is in mo on. Every child is required to have their own seatbelt. The camp director will be no fied every me a vehicle with campers departs camp and returns to camp. In case of an emergency while transpor ng campers, local services will be called immediately, followed by the camp director. The camp director will contact the BWA Director, and camper parents if necessary. Prohibited Items The following items are not allowed at camp: Weapons(including pocket knives) Money Electronics of any kind Camp License The Outdoor Discovery Camps are licensed by the Colorado Department of Human Services. The license indicates that the program has met the required standards for the opera on of a childcare facility. The Outdoor Discovery Camps follow all guidelines to ensure your child s health and safety. Colorado state law requires that childcare providers report any known or suspected cases of child abuse or neglect.
