2 Washington Washington State, bordering Canada and the Pacific Ocean, offers some of the USA s finest scenery for active vacations in the great outdoors. Washington state has the second-highest population of any western state, yet within minutes visitors can travel from any city center to peaceful countryside. m (14,411 ft.) at Mount Rainier. The Snake and Columbia rivers flow through eastern Washington before joining to cut a passage through the Cascades, the north-south mountain range that dominates the center of the state, rising to 4,392 Washington State boasts many fine beaches and small resorts on the Pacific coast, and much of the state is covered by coniferous forest. Activities include yachting on Puget Sound, hiking along the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, and mountain climbing in the Cascades and the Olympic Mountains. Rainier Biking, hiking, fishing, boating, and swimming From Yakima, Washington, travel 25 miles on Highway 12 to the junction with Highway 410. Travel 29 miles on Highway 410 (Chinook Pass Highway) to milepost Take Forest Road 18 (Bumping River Road) for 11.7 miles to campground. Naches, WA (509) Bumping Lake Campground sits just off the forested shore of Bumping Lake in the Cascade Mountains east of Mount Rainier National Park, about 45 miles northwest of Naches, Washington. Fantastic peaks, high-country lakes and oldgrowth forests provide visitors with unique and surprising landscapes, making the campground an ideal setting for both individual and family camping excursions. Restrooms Rate: $12-$17 American River Boulder Cave Chinook Scenic Byway Biking, hiking, fishing, boating, and swimming From Naches travel 5 miles west. Continue straight on Hwy 410. Turn right on Little Naches Forest Service Road Continue about 2.5 miles. Campground is on the right Little Beaches Rd Naches, WA (509) Boulder Cave National Trail is one of the most popular places in the Naches District. Visitors can walk the accessible trail along the river or explore Boulder Cave. Interpretive signs along the trail explain the geology, plants, animals and fire history of the area. Visitors will also enjoy traversing the Chinook Scenic Byway, considered one of Washington's premier driving excursions. Spectacular views of Mount Rainier, old-growth forests, alpine peaks, jagged ridges and river canyons dominate this 92-mile journey. Rate: $18 Naches, WA (509) Lodgepole Campground is located in the Okanogan- Wenatchee National Forest in the Northern Cascade Range of Washington. With the scenic waters of the American River running alongside the site, and access to pristine wilderness, scenic highways and a multitude of recreational activities nearby, the campground offers an ideal setting for outdoor enthusiasts. Restrooms Rate: $18 Hood Canal Dabob Bay Biking, hiking, fishing, boating, swimming, and horseback riding From Brinnon, WA travel north on US Highway 101 for 2 miles. This popular campground is located directly on Hood Canal. The roads are paved, as well as the accessible sites. Seal Rock Campground is one of the few national forest campgrounds located on salt water with harvestable oysters for public use. Restrooms, showers, play area, boat rentals Rate: $12-$ Campground Rd Burbank, WA (509) Lake Sacajawea Snake River Biking, hiking, fishing, and boating, boat rentals, and swimming Charbonneau Park in Eastern Washington was named one of America's Top 100 Family Campgrounds. It is located on Lake Sacajawea, formed by Ice Harbor Lock and Dam on the Lower Snake River. From Pasco, Washington, take Highway 12 east. After crossing the Snake River Bridge, take the first exit and proceed to Highway 124. Continue east through Burbank, Washington. Turn north on Sun Harbor Drive and follow for 1.5 miles, then take a left on Charbonneau Road. Campground is on the right. Restrooms, showers, and play area Rate: $12-$ Fishhook Park Rd Prescott, WA (509) Lake Sacajawea Snake River Biking, hiking, fishing, boating, and swimming Fishhook Park is located on the shores on Lake Sacajawea in Eastern Washington. The lake is formed by Ice Harbor Lock and Dam on the Lower Snake River. From Pasco, Washington, take Highway 12 east. After crossing the Snake River Bridge, take the first exit and head east on State Route 124. Continue for 19 miles, then turn left, heading north on Fishhook Park Road. 19 Burlington Horseshoe Cove Campground Park # Partial sites. Restrooms Mt. Rainier Biking, hiking, fishing, boating, and swimming From Seattle, Washington, go north on I-5 to Mt. Vernon. Take exit 230 onto State Highway 20, then take the Baker Lake Road exit and continue to the campground. Rate: $18-$30 Burlington, WA (360) Located east of Seattle, on the west side of the Cascades between the Canadian border and Mt. Rainier National Park, this area is one of the most spectacular in the country, showcasing glacier-covered peaks, wide mountain meadows and old-growth forests. 34 Coulee Dam Spring Canyon Campground Park # Partial sites. Restrooms, play area, and outdoor games Lake Roosevelt Biking, hiking, fishing, swimming, and boating Take State Highway 2 west of Spokane for 65 miles to the town of Wilbur, Washington. Turn north on State Highway 174 (follow road signs). Travel 19 miles and turn right at the sign for Spring Canyon Campground. Rate: $9-$18 Coulee Dam, WA (509) Though not directly on the water, the camping area is a short walk from the lake. The green, lush campground has beautiful views of the lake and surrounding hills. Lake temperatures are comfortable for swimming during the summer, even though much of the water originates from glaciers and snowmelt in the cold, high Canadian Rockies.
