President s Column - August 2013 By: Larry Huber This issue may arrive late for the second month in a row. The reasons are many however most involve fireworks activity. Many club members attend and compete during the PGI conventions each year which takes preparation time; while others attend the convention to learn or volunteer in many different ways. Rather than trying to explain what WPAG members do during a PGI convention, I ll just share some pictures elsewhere in this issue. Don t forget to bring your creations to the August meeting for the one-fuse contest. Details were published in the July newsletter. For those interested in learning the art of making stars be sure to check out the seminar offerings that will be conducted by Greg Zimmerman. This article is being written during the PGI convention this year, really late! However after only 2 days of competition I am hearing a familiar phrase when Jim Freeman announces scores. Once again WPAG members are placing well in most of the competition events. It may be early, but things are looking good at this point. Once again Dale and Mitzi Stoltzman will be providing the main dish for our potluck meal at the August meeting. As usual everyone is encouraged to bring a dish to pass. Bring along your appetite and something to share at the next meeting/shoot. A few volunteers are needed for announcing on the Family Service Radio channel 7-11 when items are being shot on both the B and C lines. Please let Barb Schneider, our Safety Director, know if you want to help out with announcing. For those of you who camp overnight at the Wildlife Campground, the WPAG special rate is $15 a night for use of electricity; or $10 a night for a basic campsite without the use of electricity. We will be collecting the camping fee and make payment to the campground. At our meetings we have been having excellent participation and volunteer teamwork while setting up and tearing down of our tents and equipment. The continued volunteer effort during our monthly meetings makes for a more enjoyable time for everyone. Thanks, and Stay Green! Larry
2 WPAG Members Manufacturing During PGI in Cooper s Lake, PA Kevin Flaherty could be found making rockets and ball shells. Bill Koehler spent much of his time preparing entries for the nightly competition. Jim Biersach kept busy trying to infect folks with the pyro bug all week long. Eddie Hostetter made his black powder rockets using the Armstrong method. Dan Miller and Katherine enjoyed learning tricks of the trade during the week. 3 One fuse competitions will be held at the August meeting WPAG Class C Competition Rules for August One Fuse Competition Rules Class C Competition The purpose of the Class C Display competitions is not to demonstrate the depth of the competitor s bank account, nor to show how tightly they can pack material into a given area or how far they can stretch what should fit into the definition of Class C. Instead, these competitions are intended to allow the competitor to demonstrate creativity and artistry in crafting a well thought out display from materials legally available through consumer fireworks distributors. Definition Consumer Fireworks (historically known as Class C Common Fireworks) or devices (like cremora Fireball pots) that are built by club members with the approval of Safety. Equipment Specifications 1. Any commercial Consumer Fireworks device or combinations of devices meeting the definition above may be used in this level. Modifications of permitted devices may be made by the competitor as long as the device continues to meet the Consumer Fireworks definition above. 2. In any competition, reloading of any type of mortar is prohibited. 3. Commercially manufactured match, fuse and any timing fuses are allowed in all competitions. 4. There is no limit to the number of devices fired; however, you can only use one fuse to start your board or boards. 5. Descriptions of effects are not required. Class C One Fuse Competitions Level 1 The competitor s Class C items must be mounted on 1 board 4 X 2 or 8 square feet or less. You may use as many Class C items that will fit on the board and not hang over the edge and lit with one fuse. Level 2 The competitor s Class C items must be mounted on 2 boards 4 X 2 or 16 square feet or less. You may use as many Class C items that will fit on the boards and not hang over the edge and lit with one fuse. An Item may hang over the board if you are angling, but only less than 1/3 of the devices foot print. In this class you may have 1 rack of mortars or 1 large Class C cake or 1 pyrotechnic device that is not mounted to the boards. Sam Kelsey not only served on the JPA Safety Team, but also worked on the rocket line in the evening. Ruth Holcomb was at her usual post, out in the mud, keeping track of everything at PGI s magazine
4 FRIDAY AUGUST 23 rd 2:00 pm ROLLIN, ROLLIN, ROLLIN - GET THOSE STARS A ROLLIN!! by Greg Zimmerman I will be doing an informal seminar on star rolling on Friday - August 23rd. So if you are new to rolling stars or just want to have some fun and want to show up earlier Friday I will have my two star rollers available and will go over the basics of star rolling. Seminar will start at 2:00 in the afternoon. I will have the mixed composition supplied and some different types of star cores available. Make sure that you have Safety Glasses and, if you want to keep the dust out of your nose, a dust mask or respirator type mask and maybe a pair of nitrile gloves to keep your hands clean. As an added bonus, if there is time, I will also go over the use of star plates for anybody that is interested. So plan ahead to show up early Friday! The plan is to dry the stars overnight and prime them early in the morning and dry them for use in a 3 Non-Typical shell class starting at 11:00 on Saturday morning. This seminar will be based off of Jim Biersach s shell building class. SATURDAY AUGUST 24 th 10:00 am SHARP 3 NON-TYPICAL SHELL BUILDING CLASS by Greg Zimmerman Arrive early Saturday Morning August 24 th to participate in a hands on seminar based off of Jim Biersach s shell building class. Seminar starts at 10:00 am. There is a shopping list that you need to acquire to be able to build the shell. If there is time and extra material you may be able to build 2 shells, this will all depend on time and how many people attend the seminar. So dust off your wallet and let the moths out of the purse and go to your local store to purchase the following: 12 ounce can of your favorite soft drink 2 pieces of paper grocery bag cut to 8 x 18 2 pieces of cardboard from your soft drink box cut 9 x 4 A roll of string (not to heavy). When you pull on it, you should pull pretty hard to break it Roll of 1 wide masking tape (I like the green stuff) Pair of scissors A piece of 2 PVC pipe cut to (length is not critical) A piece of ½ Copper Pipe (thin wall) 6 8 (again length not critical) Funnel to fit inside the ½ Copper Pipe 2 x4 or 2 x6 piece of wood 6 or so with a 3/8 hole drilled in the middle of the flatter side Bottle of Elmer's Glue (I like the yellow wood glue) If you don t know how to tie a clove hitch knot, Google it on the internet and practice. You will use the clove hitch a lot if you continue to make canister shells.
5 SATURDAY AUGUST 24 th 1:00 pm CUT STAR SEMINAR by Greg Zimmerman Well if the other 2 seminars didn t peak your interest come to Saturday Afternoon s Seminar starting at 1:00. We will be making Cut Stars using pre-mixed comp to save some time. This will also be a hands on seminar so you will need to purchase a few things for this seminar also. These stars will be dried and saved for a 3 Mine Seminar in September, so plan for September. Safety Glasses 2 bowls - they don t need to be fancy (around 6qt. size work nice 8-10 ) Inexpensive Metal mesh Strainer (the kind with the single handle and screen like a window screen) 2 piece of PVC pipe - if you bought this for the shell class (otherwise I like a piece of plastic coated closet pole) Plastic mixing spoon Flexible Cutting Board or may be called Cutting Mat (I bought mine in a 3 pack at Walmart) Nitrile gloves 2 pieces of wood 5/16 3/8 thick by 2 or so wide by long NOTE: Dowels do not work well; I got a piece of flat trim from the lumber company At least a 12 Metal blade paint guide (this will be your knife) If you already have Denatured Alcohol and Distilled Water and a Quart Spray Bottle, bring it with a solution of half water and half alcohol If you plan to make more cut stars at home here are some additional items --YOU DON T NEED THESE FOR THE SEMINAR-- Digital Scale (recommend down to at least 00.1 grams) Bring this if you already own one if you would Quart Spray Bottle Gallon of Distilled Water Gallon or Quart of Denatured Alcohol 100 mesh screen (McMaster Carr has a good variety available on-line) Build a couple drying screens (24 square on the outside) Make a wood frame and attach window screen to it TO CONTACT ME: Normally I do not check my every day so don t panic if I do not get back to you right away. Greg Zimmerman My is: gazimm@frontiernet.net Cell: leave your Name, Message AND your Phone Number to call back if I do not answer. If I do not call you back in a day, Call Again or me.
