4 CARAVAN HINTS & FAQs 1.1 Air conditioning Rooftop air conditioners installed into full height caravan s work extremely well due to the construction of the vans. Opening the door during hot weather will allow hot air to enter the small space of the caravan, forcing the air conditioner to work harder than normal. To avoid putting strain on the air conditioner, it is recommended that you keep doors and windows closed. Air conditioners for pop tops and camper vans will be less effective as the vinyl top skirt fitting does not have insulation. The gas vents which allow for the flow of air impact the effectiveness of the air conditioning. Please refer to your owner s manual for information on operating temperatures, as they have a cut out for both cooling and heating which may require the installation of other products to help. 1.2 Brakes If you run the brake controller fitted to your vehicle to high the breaks may overheat. If this occurs, stop to allow the unit cool down. Brakes should run cool to touch however, if vehicle is under heavy use of being towed through the city, the brakes will run hotter. Because the magnet makes contact with the brake drum, the door side will run warmer. This is normal because of the camber on WA roads but ensure the handbrake is off (all the way) and cables are loose. 1.3 Brake safe (Brake Away) Caravans with a GTM over 2 tonne require a break away unit fitted. There is a switch which has a pin and cord on the a-frame. In the event of a disconnection, it automatically applies the brakes and illuminates the stop lights. Some units have test buttons and 240v chargers, it is important to check the battery and charge when required. Leave battery plugged into 240v case supplied with charge cable. 1.4 Cleaning the RV Washing and cleaning the RV should be done with a clean sponge to avoid scratches on windows. Use car wash products for best results and after washing wax to maintain shine. 1.5 Corner Steadies Ensure that corner steadies are not used to carry the weight of the RV (only to provide a firm feel while camping). 3
5 1.6 Dust and the RV Why is there dust inside my RV? A pressure difference occurs inside and outside the van while it is being towed. This causes dust to enter from outside the van any way it can. To minimise this, a pressure hatch can be fitted to prevent as much dust getting inside the van. NOTE: Due to venting on caravans, some dust will still enter. 1.7 Fridge Lighting fridge: When lighting the fridge, follow the operation manual (some models are fitted with an ASES fridge which is automatic). If the fridge is manual; press and hold the gas button, then press the ignitor repeatedly until the dial indicator moves over to the green side, you can then release the gas button. Absorption fridges generally take up to 8 hours to cool, however some cooling may be felt after 2 hours. It is best to check that the vent is discharging heat. HINT: As absorption fridges are slow to cool, it is suggested that they are turned on at least 24 hours prior to use. Put items into the pre-chilled area to help with cooling. Keep the door closed for as long as possible to increase performance and stop cool air escaping. 1.8 Gas If you smell gas inside your RV, turn off the gas bottles immediately, open all available windows/doors to let the gas escape for at least 1 hour. Gas detectors are available for purchase. 1.9 Gas appliance operation When lighting gas appliances after filling gas bottles, ensure the gas line is connected correctly, be sure to turn the gas cock on the bottle on, then depress the gas fuse if fitted Hot water system Lighting gas: Ensure the HWS has a supply of water. Open the gas bottle and turn on at the face plate. Inside you will see the red light come on (this light will go out once ignited). You may hear a ticking noise after ignition, this is just a safety feature to ensure the unit stays lit Microwave The power lead is plugged into a power point in the cupboard adjacent to the microwave. NOTE: While travelling it is recommended that you wrap the glass tray in a tea towel or the original packaging to avoid breakage. 4
6 1.12 Raising/lowering Pop tops Ensure while lowering/raising the roof, the main door is open and latched back to allow air caught inside to escape/enter easily. Opening: The awning must be rolled out approximately 1m to raise the roof without putting tension on it. Closing: Do the same in reverse, ensure the doors are open and zippers are up, otherwise damage may occur. Note: Awning must be on close so that it rolls up on the barrel Roll out awning Ensure that both arms are locked and the catch is in the close position before proceeding to travel. If there is wind or rain, it is recommended that you keep the awning in the closed position. If you choose to leave the awning out during rain, ensure the arms are at different heights to allow the water to drain off the awning skin to avoid damage. It is recommended that you pack the awning away when storms or strong winds are forecasted Service intervals We recommend that your RV be serviced every km, or annually whichever occurs first. NOTE: New vans also require a 1000km / 3 month service 1.15 Storage It is recommended to wind the jockey wheel up/down while not in use. This allows water to run off RV during wet weather as caravan roofs are not level. Storing them front up/down stops water from pooling on the van. Pop tops can be stored up or down depending on storage location, but require airing out on hot days. Batteries should be on a charger from 240v timer or solar and the breakaway changed. Water tanks should be drained. Gas should be turned off Stove Lighting stove: Lift the lid and ensure it is back as far as it can go. Turn the knob to the highest setting and hold the piezo lighter don until lit (keep hold of lighter after releasing the knob to ensure it stays lit), then release the knob. WARNING: Do not use without ventilation in place. 5
7 1.17 Water pump Check that the pump is switched on (you should be able to hear it running). If you cannot hear it running, check the fuse and replace it if needed. If the unit is not bleeding air, check that one tank is selected and not turned off sometimes the main water pressure will come back through. If any debris are lodged in the pump, the tanks will fill slowly. Ensure the pump is turned off when not in use to reduce system noise and pressure Water tanks Water tanks must be filled gently with average tap pressure to avoid causing damage to the tank. If it is difficult to fill, the breather may have water stuck in it. Blow down to clear, then proceed to fill tanks. If the RV is fitted with more than one tank, there will be a changeover valve fitted. You can select one tank at a time or both Windows/doors Main door: It is important that doors are key locked before travelling to prevent them from opening during transit. Some pressure may be needed on the top and bottom so that they are in the correct position. Windows: Secure and lock before transit. Ensure blinds/screens are in the closed position. The windows occasionally stick to the rubber seal, this can be avoided by smearing a small amount of Vaseline to lubricate. The struts fitted require no maintenance however, if you have been in a dusty area, a spray of CRC is beneficial for smooth operation v appliances Please refer to owner s manual for detailed instructions on appliance use. Power points: All 240v appliances are plugged into a power point with a switch that turns them on/off. NOTE: Air conditioning is hard wired and cannot be unplugged. If you are unable to turn any appliances on, check that the RCD is in the on position and not tripped where plugged in Please note Never try to light any gas appliances if you can smell gas. The simple way to bleed to the gas system after bottle change/long storage time is to light the largest burner on the stove until the flame burns evenly. After this the other appliances should easily light. 6
