2 1 Valley Grain Company Records, Contents Series I--Papers Hiram H. Potter Personal Papers Anderson-Steele Realty Company Inland Grain Company Valley Grain Company Individual Elevators (all in Illinois)... 7 Series II--Unbound Ledgers and Oversize Material Inland Grain Valley Grain Individual Elevators (all in Illinois) Series III--Bound Volumes Boxed Small Volumes Unboxed Large Volumes Series IV--Cancelled Checks and Statements The collection is divided into four series by format. Series I contains personal and professional correspondence and various business papers. The day-to-day activities of Valley Grain are documented in the daily communications between Potter and his local managers. The letters of B.F. Rayburn of Mahomet (subseries 5-I) and R.D. Smilie of Odell (subseries 5-L) are especially useful. Other topics discussed in the correspondence include the general condition of the midwestern farm economy, the Great Depression, federal farm legislation such as the McNary-Haugen Bill, as well as other political issues, farmers' co-operatives, and, in the Smilie letters, the Ku Klux Klan. Letters and business papers relating to a specific elevator are filed together under "Individual Elevators." These files often include papers of companies that preceded or followed Inland and Valley Grain at those locations. Series II contains unbound ledger pages as well as oversize material. For some locations, the ledgers are complete for several years. Series III contains bound business volumes and ledgers. Series IV consists of unprocessed checks, check stubs, and bank statements.
