In all these sentiments, one probably imagines that familiar symbol rounded at the shoulders and pointed at the end. It wasn t always that way. In the western world, for nearly 1,500 years, the physical heart was considered to be shaped more like a pinecone. That was thanks to second-century Greek physician Galen, who evidently never looked at a real one. Since Galen believed it, so did everyone else, according to Marilyn Yalom, Clayman Institute scholar. But in the 1300s, the modern shape of the symbolic heart began to take form, preparing the way for real knowledge of the physical heart. In the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, the theological virtue of charity is depicted in work dated to 1305 as a woman holding a pear-shaped heart to God. By 1340, that heart shape changed. In a French manuscript of that year, the symbolic heart was depicted in the modern form we recognize today. Perhaps that was a good time for the symbolic heart to detour from the physical one. By the 1500s, Flemish physician Andreas Vesalius and Leonardo da Vinci overcame centuries of taboo against studying the dead human body and were able to describe the actual, physical heart. Meanwhile, in symbolism, the stylized heart we recognize today became the standard. 64 Simple ways to volunteer as a family Volunteering as a family is an excellent way to teach children compassion, according to Parents Magazine. Kids can get involved with volunteer activities at any age, increasing the likelihood that they will continue to volunteer later in life. To start with, be on the lookout for projects in your church or community that are easy, one-time commitments that can involve the whole family. Charity walks are a great example of something even the little ones will enjoy. Food drives are another. Children can help gather a bag of canned goods for the local food pantry. Check with the local animal shelter to find out their current needs. Animal shelters, in particular, often need specific things such as cat and dog food, cleaners, pet beds, or leashes. Shelters also often have dog-walk programs where everyone in the family can walk a dog for an hour or so. Other places to contact include the local children s hospitals or nursing homes. Children s hospitals might welcome gently used books or DVDs. Nursing homes sometimes have visitation programs where children can meet and learn something about an older person s life. However, for security reasons, hospitals and nursing homes often don t welcome individual volunteers. You can, however, contact a group such as Volunteers of America to see the many ways you can help. Go to voa. org to find a local chapter. Families don t even need to connect with a large organization. They can hold their own car wash, for example, and donate proceeds to a shelter or another local charity. Once you find something that you enjoy doing as a family, you might be able to make an ongoing commitment. Even if it s not a formal arrangement or event, parents can help spread the spirit of volunteerism in their children on a daily basis by teaching them to pick up trash in parks, serving in their church, or tutoring younger students after school. It is an ancient art. Even an ancient religious art. The kind of art that makes you say Ewwww. Sword Swallowing is not for those with tender hearts, or weak stomachs. It isn t done with mirrors. They actually swallow the sword. According to Sword Swallowers Association International (SSAI), the practice was probably started in 2000 BC when the Fakirs of India swallowed swords to demonstrate their invulnerability, thanks to the gods. The Greeks and Romans took up the practice by 1 AD. With that, it spread throughout Asia and Europe. Today, if you can see the ancient art, it will probably be in connection with Ripley s Believe It Or Not (naturally) on World Sword Swallowers Day, the last Saturday in February. This event is helpfully held in connection with National Swallowing Disorders Month. So, you might well ask: Is it a trick? According to SSAI, no. They don t use a fake or trick sword. They don t swallow a tube first to protect their throat, which would be worse, they say. Sword swallowers need to completely eliminate the gag reflex. They must also learn to voluntarily relax muscles in the throat and esophagus. These muscles usually are not voluntary. They have to hyperextend to form a straight line between the pharnyx and stomach. It is dangerous, but probably less than one might imagine. For one thing, the art requires physical skills that take years to master. In 2006, the British Medical Journal did a study of injuries associated with sword swallowing. The journal concluded that sword swallowing was most dangerous when the swallower was distracted. Seems fair. Punctures and hemorrhage were the main problems, but the journal could not find anyone who died from sword swallowing. Amateurs, presumably those who decide one day to stick a sword down their throat, are at the highest risk. 65

66 Clamdigger Kitchen Rum Raisin Monkey Bread The company-perfect breakfast treat This recipe, a variation of sugar and cinnamon monkey bread, is created by adding rum-marinated raisins. 1 cup raisins 3 ounces dark rum 1 stick butter, melted 1 can of flaky refrigerated grand biscuits 1 cup of white sugar or Splenda 1/4 cup of cinnamon 1 cup of brown sugar Soak the raisins in the rum and refrigerate over night. Mix the granulated sugar and cinnamon in a bowl. Cut the biscuits into pie-shaped quarters. Coat them with the sugar mixture. Grease a deep cake pan or bundt pan with cooking oil. Line one layer of the pieces like an inter-locking jigsaw puzzle in the pan. Pour half the melted butter evenly over the layer. Sprinkle some of the sugar mix over the buttered layer and place the raisins on the top. Arrange a second layer of the dough pieces on top of the raisins and pour the remainder of the butter over it, and the brown sugar over all. Bake at 400 degrees for ten minutes, reduce heat to 350 and bake 15 minutes or until top layer is crusty. Serves six to eight. For the most part, cat sitters go to the homes of vacationing cat owners to check in on the animals one or two times a day. It is possible to get a house/cat sitting job that involves actually staying in a house, picking up the mail, and feeding the cat. Most of the time, owners and cats won t want you to take the cat away from its home. If you go into cat sitting for the extra money, and not as a full-time job, you can pick and choose the jobs you want. Advertise on Facebook and accept jobs from people you know or people in your area. It s a good idea to get bonded and insured if you will be going to someone s home. If you don t know your clients, you will have to visit, introduce yourself to people and felines, and generally get to know them. Once hired for the job, get emergency numbers and permission to take the animal to the vet, if needed. You ll need a key to the house to enter when the owners are away. Be sure to try the key before you accept the job. You need to make sure it is the right one and that you can make it work. Leave a diary of your visits to the home and notes about your adventures. Text messages with pictures also work. Expect the kitty parents to check in once in a while. 66
