Stranger in the Night On a cold, gloomy night in early January a stranger knocked on my door to enquire if by chance anyone had handed in her handbag which contained her purse, camera, and train tickets. Inadvertently she had left this on the station platform when boarding the train to Grantham. East Midlands Train staff had been very understanding, allowing her to return to the village in the hope of retrieving it. Unfortunately, the bag was nowhere to be seen so, after visiting the Cranmer Arms where the staff had been really kind to her, she thought she might try my home at it is the nearest house to the station. She stayed with us until the next train to Grantham was due and got on the train to return to her home in Brighton. To my delight a few weeks later she came down my path again, this time bearing delicious cupcakes to say thank you. Her next port of call was to be the Cranmer Arms with a delivery of more cupcakes, and to return the loan of a 10 note. I was so happy to see her again as she told me the ending to this story. On reaching Grantham Station for her onward journey, she was delighted when the guard presented her with her bag, contents intact, which had been handed in by a mother and her young daughter. They had found it under a seat at Aslockton Station and handed it to the guard. As Peggy left my home, she was full of praise for the wonderful people of Aslockton and asked me to try to find out who had handed in her bag so that she could thank them too! More cupcakes I feel so if it was you - please let us know. Norma Broomham Chair, Aslockton Community Association painted by John Sheardown. There have been a few of the locals pitch in to help out so it s a big thanks to them as well; Richard Simms, Cyril Patchet and Mick Marsh and anyone else that has helped. There is regular live music and a weekly pub quiz on a Thursday with a cash jackpot. There is also a Bingo night every other Tuesday. The Cranmer Arms also have a darts team, two domino teams and two long skittle teams. They are always looking for new players so why not come along and join one of the teams. You can find out more on the website; They are also supporting Cranmer FC and the Old Greyhound FC all season feeding both teams and any away players that come back to the pub. The Cranmer Arms were in the February s edition of the Nottingham Drinker Magazine and were praised by CAMRA for being made to feel welcome, they said how good the beer was! Tony and Nichola were very pleased with that, as they pride themselves in there standard of beers. We look forward in the Cranmer Arms growing from strength to strength. There are a number of events planned for the summer months so keep up to date by checking our website out or checking the boards outside. The first event is Saturday 30 th March a night with The Mondays a local young band Then a Race Afternoon to coincide with the National on 6 th April which includes sweep stakes and fish and chips! It would be great if we supported them in their new venture, sounds like there is something for all ages! Why not pop along, you are sure to get a warm welcome. 2 15

14 The Cranmer Arms has a new family! Tony, Nichola, Jaime, 9 and Ciara, 7 have joined us in the village! Tony left the RAF in 2010 after serving all over the world. He managed a number of bars on the RAF camps as secondary duties. After leaving due to a long sickness, he dabbled in a few things including running a bar in Witham St Hughs. Nichola managed Little chefs and also did office work. Tony and Nichola decided to take the plunge and buy a pub. They looked at a few locations but fell in love with the village of Aslockton. Having been here a few months, Nichola decided to give up her job and concentrate full time in the pub. Their 2 children are both at Aslockton Primary School and have fitted in real well. The first event they ran for the village was the annual bonfire night for which they donated the profits to the school and are hoping to continue this every year as a charity event. They are now offering a lunch time menu; they have just had a modern catering kitchen put in. There will be theme nights on a regular basis; watch the boards outside and the website for details. They also offer teas and coffees and cake. It is a Family Friendly Pub. There will be a new children s play area being fitted in the Spring. There will also be a bouncy castle in the summer months. As you can see the garden has been tidied and all the trees have been cut back and they are having new benches. You will agree the Cranmer Arms has one of the best pub gardens in the area. They have been hard at work and have had a partial refit including new flooring and all the walls being replastered with thanks to Pete Gommersall. The walls were then Village Activities A chance for you to choose! What would you like to see going on in the village? Children s Christmas Party? Pie & Skittles Evening? Movie Night? Amateur Dramatics Group? Disco? Barbeque? Car Boot Sale? Table Top Sale? You decide! Let us know using the form below and we can discuss it at the Annual General Meeting in April. So, complete the form and leave at the village shop for collection. If you want it we need to know about it! Name Event Event Address Phone A C A Events Suggestions Form 3

4 Aslockton Community Association Social Events The return of Fascinating Rhythm on Saturday 16 February was an event worth waiting for. We had a great evening, the jazz was easily as good as last year and the show was excellent. Everyone of the very healthy audience seemed to enjoy themselves. Our next event is on Sunday 17 March at 7p.m. when Thingamajig Theatre presents Hullaba Lulu, a show that is particularly accessible for children. It's about an eccentric couple who travel their strange monochrome world in a quirky land-boat, until their lives are turned upside down by a new arrival - the adorable and colourful Lulu. In her ever-changing forms, Lulu teaches the couple all about love, plan and eventually, how to say goodbye. Entertaining, hilarious and poignant, the show features puppetry, live music and songs. West Yorkshire's Thingamajig Theatre is fast becoming one of the UK's most respected puppet companies. Its distinctive visual style is acclaimed by audiences both in this country and abroad. Hullaba Lulu captivates every audience with its engaging characters and spell-binding story. Suitable for all ages 5 upwards. Tickets 8, 5(under 19), 20 Family ticket (2 adults and up to 3 children) from Sue Rowe (850600). Thank you to everyone who has supported the programme this winter. Sue Rowe, Chair, ACA Social Events group Dorothy Gill - died February 10 th 2013 It is possible that many of you did not know Dorothy, in some ways she was a private person. Her recent funeral was truly a celebration of her life. She served in the W.A.A.Fs at the same time as Gordon was in the Army. They married in 1948 in Nottingham and had three sons. They in turn married and produced grandchildren and great grandchildren which brought her great joy. During the early years of marriage she cared for her children and for elderly relatives. Later she returned to work in the Employment Office. Gordon of course, our local blacksmith (they came to Aslockton in 1978) Dorothy and Gordon were passionate ballroom dancers and through their dedication became Champion Ballroom Dancers, Much later Dorothy joined a Tap Dancing Class which took part in many competitions. She gained her Tap Dancing Gold medal when she was 80!!! Members of that class tap danced at the funeral reception as a tribute. Ever challenging herself she developed her literary skills producing prose and poetry which won her prizes in the W.I. She was President for nine years. Aslockton Art Club was another of her interests. Due to determination she continued to take part despite the developing cancer. When we met there was laughter, sometimes she was exasperating and we did not always agree but we put the world to rights, even when she was very ill. There will be an empty space in my life and in many of those who knew her. Jean Flinton 13

12 CRANMER TABLE TENNIS In 2011 two Table Tennis teams began playing their home league matches in the Thomas Cranmer Centre. The objective for the future is to involve more local people in the rewarding game of Table Tennis for all ages. On 7th March from 7:00 to 9:30 pm, an open evening will take place at the TCC giving an opportunity to try out your skills! There will be a nominal charge to cover the costs of hiring the Thomas Cranmer Centre. Why not come along and have a go, you may surprise yourself! Malcolm Harper New Aslockton Website! It is still in the early days of production, however we've tried to give as much information on Aslockton as possible. Let us know of any additions you feel may make this website more enjoyable and informative. This is a great opportunity to make the most of any clubs or organisations in our area to get them noticed and help build them up. You can use the contact page on the website to let us know your views. Also if you have any interesting history of Aslockton you would like mentioned please let us know. We had 2634 unique visitors in the first 2 weeks of it being published which was a great start. ASLOCKTON BOOK GROUP During the course of 2012 our group read nine books. At the end of the year we all voted for our favourites. If you are looking for a good read, therefore, these are the three books which proved to be the most popular with us and which we recommend to you. Third Place - The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon. 15 year old Christopher Boone narrates the story of his life and his quest to find the killer of a neighbour s dog. Christopher suffers from Aspergers syndrome and his communication skills are poor. Through the unsentimental telling of his story, however, we learn of the impact his condition has on his own life and the life of his parents. Sad but funny too, the book is lightened by lively illustrations. Second Place - Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson. A young fisherman dies at sea in mysterious circumstances. Prejudices sharpened by World War II bubble to the surface in the small racially mixed island community from which he comes. As a snow storm grips the island a young Japanese man is brought to trial, is he guilty of murder? First Place - The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Written with great humanity, this is a World War II story with a difference. It is both the heart-breaking and heartwarming story of ordinary civilians caught up in war. Set in the small fictional town of Molching in Germany we follow the life of Liesel Meminger, the enchanting young schoolgirl who is the book thief of the title. If reading with our book group appeals to you please contact Sue Rowe on or Maggie Lowth on

Village Gateways 6 PARISH COUNCIL NEWS AND UPDATES Did you contribute to the survey regarding how to proceed with the Gateways? If so, thank you. Opinion was divided between keeping them and doing away with them, so the took a midway course and decided to remove the planters as such but keep some of the woodwork as a mock gate in each location. The ground will be re-seeded with grass. This has now happened in two locations, and the general consensus is that the entrances to the village look much better. Annual Parish Meeting All residents are invited to attend the Annual Parish Meeting which will be held on Thursday 9 th May 2013 at 7pm at the Thomas Cranmer Centre. After the report from the Chair of the, and answers to questions from residents, we are pleased that Martin Brown from Network Rail will talk to us on the plans they have for some of the footpaths in the village Footpaths The has heard from Network Rail that they would like to divert the footpath at the back of Vale Close to go along the railway to the level crossing on Main Street, thus avoiding crossing the line in a potentially dangerous location. Martin Brown from Network Rail will be the speaker at the Annual Parish Meeting on May 9 th at the Thomas Cranmer The Cranmer Youth Club: The Next Generation The Cranmer Youth Club, meeting each Tuesday evening in term time at the Jubilee Hall, Whatton, is now in its 6 th year since it was re-launched back in 2007, and it has been a great success, with a thriving membership and committee, great venue and equipment and a tried and tested rota of activities and contacts. One of the keys to its success has been Gavin McAndrew who has led the club from the start, and also the several parents who have assisted him along the way. Gav will be retiring from the role in the summer, as will Steve Purdy who has supported Gav over the last couple of years. This means we have 2 terms to find someone willing to take on the running of a really popular and well established village club. The leader has lots of support from the committee and other helpers in organising and running the club, but they are the ones there every Tuesday taking responsibility for events on the night. We need someone to spend the next 2 terms with Gav, showing them the ropes or if no-one comes forward, then we put the club into hibernation from the summer, with all equipment and funds ready should anyone wish to restart a youth club in the future If you are interested or just want to know a bit more with no commitments please give me ( ) or Gav ( ) a call. Adam Mussert (CYC Chair) 11

I would like to start to include a piece each issue on people in the village who do things for others in the village, just by an act of kindness. Do you think this is a good idea? Do you know anyone you would like to honour with a mention? Contact me and let me know your thoughts. We have people in the village who are self employed and trying to succeed in business in what is a difficult time. Do you know anyone who lives within the village who deserves a mention to promote their business? We can offer an article and show our support of local business ventures. If you are the business owner or know of anyone worthy of this, please contact me. 10 Unsung Heros! Local Business Support Wanted Honorary Treasurer The Aslockton Community Association is in need of a new Treasurer. If you would like to offer your services for this voluntary post, or to find out more details, please contact: Norma Broomham Chairman, Aslockton Community Association norma.broomham@virgin.net Tel: Centre. He will explain the plans and answer questions from residents. Do attend if you use the footpath, or the other footpath which crosses the line at The Capes. A public inquiry will be held into the future of FP 13 on Thursday 30 th July Further details will be available in the next edition of The Voice and on Aslockton Online. Bus Services After the initial panic when Première announced they were going into administration, we were pleased to see that alternative services had been put in place, operating on the same time tables. Stagecoach operate service 55 and Sharpe s service 56B, until the County Council s review of services has been completed. Representations have been made to the County Council about ensuring residents can go to and from Bingham on public transport. Concessionary fares are still available on the B bus from Whatton to Newark on Wednesdays and Fridays. meetings take place on the second Monday of each month. There is an Open Session at the start of each meeting for members of the public to ask questions or raise items of interest. The Agendas and Minutes are available on the website at and the Parish Notice Board. If you would like more information, or to raise any issue with the Parish Council, please contact the Clerk, Carola Jones at aslocktonpc@gmail.com, tel
