1 BINGHAM SURGERY Tel No Option 3 The construction of a bigger, modernised health centre to replace Bingham s Eaton Place surgery opened to the public on Monday 11th November. Access to the new surgery will be from entrances off Newgate Street car park and off Newgate Street itself. Building work will continue for a while longer on the current site whilst the existing Surgery is demolished in order to make way for car parking and access. This work is anticipated to be completed by the end of January Aslockton Voice Issue 38, December 2013 The new centre will provide family doctor and community-based services such as district nurses, health visitors and midwives. There will be more clinical rooms to provide for Bingham s projected population growth and a larger car park. Dr David Petty, lead GP for Belvoir Health Group, said: We are delighted that our plans and aspirations for a new health centre will now become a reality. We are committed to delivering the best possible services for our patients, and new premises built to the highest standards will allow us to provide the quality of care that our patients deserve. Wishing all the residents of Aslockton a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the Aslockton Voice Team and the Aslockton Parish Council. 2 The Future of the Aslockton Voice We have been going through a bit of an unsettled time with regard to the Aslockton Voice for some time now. The Aslockton Community Association is a charity and so has a requirement to have a Chairperson to function within this capacity. Whilst the ACA is undergoing changes the Parish Council has taken on responsibility for the p u b l i c a t i o n a n d distribution of the Voice. I will be continuing as Editor of the Voice and we hope to continue to produce four issues per year and that the Voice will still be delivered free of charge to every household in the village of Aslockton. For any local residents who are not within the Aslockton boundary, there will be copies available in the Aslockton shop. It will also be available to read on the website If you have any news or info that you would like to share, please let me know and I would be happy to include it in the next issue! 3 Around And About in the LIGHT UP THE CHURCH AT CHRISTMAS Those of us at St. Thomas Church in Aslockton think it would be a good idea for us to reflect the life of the village by lighting up the Church this coming Christmas. To this end, individuals, groups, clubs, organisations and business are invited to install their own lit Christmas tree or other lit Christmas arrangement within the Church for viewing over the Christmas period. This is not intended to be a Christmas Tree Festival in the normal sense, in that people will not be charged to come in and see the display. However, over the given period the Church will be open and people can come in whenever they want to see the display. Naturally the trees etc. will also be lit for Sunday services and Christmas services during that period also. Trees will need to be installed in the Church during the week commencing 9th December and I will be on hand for the electrical supply etc. The idea is to commence the display during that week when sufficient trees are in place. The display will then continue through to 5th January after which the trees etc. can be removed (and hopefully saved for use again the following year). In order for the idea to work and be effective I estimate that we will need a minimum of about 30 lit trees. The purpose of this note is to provide an early indication of our intention and to get a feeling of who would like to participate so we can determine if there is sufficient interest. To that end would you please contact me and let me know if you or your group are in agreement and like the idea. Thanking you in anticipation of your support. Graham Harper. Churchwarden, Tel: Vale Community! Orston Pageant The Orston Pageant takes place in the Village on Christmas Eve. It starts at the Village Hall at around 6:00pm and moves to the Green in front of St Mary s Church for the final scenes. Scarrington Women s Institute Meetings are held at Scarrington W.I. Hall first Thursday of the month at 7.30 pm. Visitors welcome from all the surrounding villages. Distributors Needed! We need help with delivering the Aslockton Voice to all our residents in the villlage. Could you help? We do four issues a year and if you could even just do your own road or the area where you walk your dog maybe? It would be lovely to hear from you and which delivery you can do. Bingham Christmas Fair Friday 6th December - 5-8pm. Market Place, Bingham Stalls, children's entertainment, Santa s Grotto & lots of exciting things. E Books from the Library! E Books are now available free of charge through Nottinghamshire County Councils libraries. The decision to scrap the 1 charge per e-book issued has been made by the Council s Culture Committee. 3

4 WIND TURBINES IN THE VALE Many of you will be aware of the recent planning applications submitted for two wind turbines at Orston and Whatton. Perhaps, in the light of ever soaring energy bills you thought that these Blots on the landscape are a necessary evil which will keep costs static or even reduce them? Do you actually know how they work or what they cost? We didn`t so we went to a Presentation at Long Clawson which was based on the findings of Mr John Rust, an electrical engineer working as a consultant for Siemens in the construction of off-shore wind farms. I have tried to condense the information so that we can all understand it. 1. Wind energy generated by turbine (electricity) is subsidised by the Government in what is called feed in tariff. To raise the subsidy the Government imposed the green tax on energy companies which is then passed on to industry, you and me. 2. The feed in tariffs vary according to the output of the turbine and, illogically, it doesn`t follow that the bigger the output the more money you make. In fact the turbines proposed at Orston are capable of producing 900kw but would be downgraded to 500kw to ensure maximum profit to the owner. This wastes the potential to power 80 homes. 3. A 900kw turbine downgraded to 500kw would provide the installer with a year of which goes to the land owner. THIS IS INDEX LINKED AND LOCKED IN FOR 20 YEARS. This is economically totally unsustainable. The installers and landowners have no interest in going green they are quite simply in it for the money and thus driving the rest of us into fuel poverty. 4. A 500kw turbine can only produce enough electricity to continuously boil 44 kettles a year. They have a ridiculously low output for their size and impact. 5. The average cost to supply and install a turbine is 1million. Thanks to the feed in tariffs it would be paid for in 3-4 years leaving the installer with a profit of 6+ million after 20 years. 6. The electricity produced by a 500kw turbine is over 4 times the wholesale cost of electricity and is locked in for 20years. 7. This is perhaps the most shocking - the Governments 2020 target for on-shore wind capacity has already been achieved yet applications are still being submitted and in many cases agreed. 5 Would you like to adopt Aslockton train station? Adoption of the station by community groups or individuals can really add value to what is already there, helping to make the station more welcoming and attractive. Volunteers are encouraged to become the eyes and ears of their local station. Through their voluntary work they can also help to ensure that the unstaffed station is well presented and looked after. Generally a key aim of adoption groups is to improve the ambience of the station and its environs, thereby making it safer, more secure and more attractive, encouraging more people to use it. Whether it's tending platform gardens, checking station facilities or helping to distribute visitor guides and rail timetables. Train operator East Midlands Trains has an adoption scheme for those who want to get involved and volunteer to care for and take pride in their local railway station. Station adopters are required to carry out regular basic checks relating to the tidiness and cleanliness of the station. These checks are additional to those already carried out by East Midlands Trains. In Lincolnshire many stations have already been adopted through this scheme; including Ruskington and Metheringham and they benefit from the support and enthusiasm that station adopters can bring. Market Rasen adoption group have helped to transform the station that previously suffered from vandalism to a welcoming environment and this has undoubtedly contributed to a dramatic increase in passengers and this year the group won East Midlands Trains Community Partnership Award. The adopters enabled planters to be installed, graffiti removed and murals painted. If you would like further information about East Midlands Trains station adoption scheme please contact Lincolnshire County Councils Community Rail Officer Jayne Wingad on (customer services). jayne.wingad@lincolnshire.gov.uk. Consider also the size of a 74m turbine - Bottesford church steeple plus two double decker buses - and at present there are 46 applications pending in the Vale of Belvoir. Incredibly The Vale was not recommended for the production of wind energy as we lack constant wind and wind speeds are too variable. It was suggested at the presentation that in order to make a bigger impact, all the Vale villages should help one another with objections to planning applications for wind turbines. Objections can only be based on material considerations and it was suggested that as we have a wealth of grade 1 and 2 listed buildings across the Vale we state that their setting will be compromised/spoilt by the erection of a structure which will dwarf it. A building s setting doesn`t just mean its garden or churchyard but the landscape in which it sits and this method of objection was upheld by the High Court when Bottesford won their case against the installation of a turbine near their village. Objections must be submitted by individuals, copies (either photo or downloads) are not counted. And lastly some good news - thanks to OSVAT (Orston and Surrounding Villages against Turbines) plus some 400 supporters - the planning application for turbine number one has been refused. We feel sure that the installers will appeal and we wait on the outcome of the application for turbine number two, but round one to us! The application for the anaerobic digester Orston/Flawborough has been withdrawn but may yet re-appear so watch this space! Fiona Barker 12 5

6 The Sparrow in the Hall T he Venerable Bede completed his Ecclesiastical History of the English People in 731. In it, he records the story of the conversion of King Edwin of Northumberland. Bishop Paulinus told Edwin and his counsellors about Jesus and his offer of salvation. One of Edwin s chief advisors replied with this observation: Your Majesty, when we compare the present life of man on earth with that time of which we have no knowledge, it seems to me like the swift flight of a single sparrow through the banqueting-hall where you are sitting at dinner on a winter s day with your counsellors. In the midst there is a comforting fire to warm the hall; outside the storms of winter rain or snow are raging. This sparrow flies swiftly in through one door of the hall, and out through another. While he is inside, he is safe from the winter storms; but after a moment of comfort, he vanishes from sight into the wintry world from which he came. Even so, man appears on earth for a little while; but of what went before this life or of what follows, we know nothing. Therefore, if this new teaching has brought any more certain knowledge, it seems only right that we should follow it. The Good News of Jesus, as Edwin came to recognise, can indeed explain why we are made and what our destiny can be eternal life through belief in Jesus. But the story also challenges us about the time spent in the warmth of the hall. Do we take that opportunity to get to know Jesus, in preparation for when we must make our exit? The story also speaks to me of the people we will encounter as they too pass through the hall. Some of these encounters will be brief, some more extended. But do we make the most of each of them, in the knowledge that each such encounter is God given? On a personal note, this is my 10 th season of promoting performances in Aslockton with over 50 performances already under my belt. If you have never attended a performance at the TCC then please consider coming to one: The standard is always excellent. You can see professional theatre/music for a fraction of the price you will pay in Nottingham. We can keep the price down because most of the performances are subsidised by Nottinghamshire County Council and Rushcliffe Borough Council. A super venue! No travel costs because the venue is within walking distance. A reasonably priced bar! What is there not to like?! Hope to see you Sue Rowe Karl Przywala Vicar 6 11

7 It s all happening at the TCC! The 2013/14 TCC touring theatre season got off to an excellent start with Farnham Maltings new production The Iranian Feast. Not only did we have a very thought-provoking drama staged in a most innovative way, we also shared the feast, cooked as part of the performance, with various little nibbles and a whole bowlful of Aash-e Reshte Persian legume, herb and noodle soup - more like a bean stew and absolutely delicious! At the time of writing we have 2 concerts coming in November by Trio Gitan and Richard Durrant, very different sorts of music but both excellent I am sure. December sees the return of The Stormy Weather Boys in their Christmas concert. If you ve never seen them then give them a try this time! An unforgettable night of sea shanties and salty tales from our local shanty group. Amazing value at 10, which includes a fish n chip supper. Tickets from Mary Marsh (850003) and Sue Rowe (850600) or susanrowe.assoc@virgin.net Looking ahead to 2014, on Friday 14 February we see the return of the New Perspectives Theatre Company with Him With His Foot In His Mouth, a stage adaptation of a Saul Bellow story, which promises to be very funny. This will be the first New Perspectives production that we have hosted by the new Artistic Director, Jack McNamara. His first production for the company, The Boss of it All, received rave reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe, so I urge you to give this one a try! In March we host a band that it new to us The Midnight Cabaret Band - but more about them in the next Voice. 8 PARISH COUNCIL NEWS AND UPDATES The Old Greyhound JPC Developments, the new owners, have had pre-planning consultations with Rushcliffe Borough Council over the future of the site. We were contacted with the idea of a presentation being given to the Parish Council of their proposals so that we could then convey these proposals to the village. However, we have now been advised that certain issues have been raised which need to be addressed before the presentation can take place. Local Improvement Scheme You may have noticed that block paving, kindly funded by County Councillor Martin Suthers and Borough Councillor Jackie Marshall, has been laid around the Thomas Cranmer History Board and new planters purchased from a grant from Nottinghamshire County Council. These were planted up over the summer and we hope that you think that this project is of benefit to the village. Bus Services On the 12 th June Notts. County Council held a road show and consultation over the future services for our village and the surrounding area. The Council has to make massive budget savings over the next few years and to help make these savings, it is proposed to reduce spending on the supported local bus service network by 1.8m, or 30 per cent, between 2014 and Full details of the buses affected will be released shortly, with the Authority planning to launch a public consultation on the future funding of local services. At the road show many villagers expressed their concerns over our future bus services and we hope that these concerns have been taken on board by the Council. Footpaths Network Rail has withdrawn the proposal to close the footpath over the railway line at the back of Vale Close. Following the public inquiry held on Tuesday 30 th July a Modification Order for Footpath 13 (the fields bordering the railway line and the Smite formerly owned by Mr. Machin) was granted subject to a small modification which should be confirmed by the end of November. The effect of the Order will be to modify the Definitive Map and Statement for the area by adding thereto Footpath 13. Further details will be placed on the Notice Board and on Aslockton Online. Cliff Hill Lane Following a number of requests by residents, an extension of the 30mph restriction on the Lane has been considered by the Parish Council and Nottinghamshire County Council. A proposal to place the 30mph sign beyond the gateway to the village has been agreed and Nottinghamshire County Council are to complete the formalities. Parish Clerk It is with regret that our Clerk, Carola Jones, has resigned due to ill health. Although only with us for a short time her contribution and commitment to the Council was greatly appreciated. We are pleased to announce that her replacement is Michele Rogers whose contact details are: 37, College Close, Newark NG24 4GA, telephone and aslocktonpc@gmail.com Aslockton Station Adoption Please see separate details of the above scheme which we hope will appeal to a group of villagers. Norma Broomham was until recently the Station Adopter but her bungalow is on the market and she will be moving away from the village. 8 9
