3 The Wolds & Beyond Welcome to one of the most beautiful parts of the UK, the Yorkshire Wolds. Days here can be spent walking over rambling hills, cycling down country lanes, taking afternoon tea in pretty villages, tasting local produce at food fairs in bustling market towns such as Beverley or Malton, visiting galleries and grand stately homes or just watching the world go by from a village pub sipping locally produced ale. When the day has come to an end its time to head to one of the areas many great restaurants with a choice that includes everything from michelin starred gastro pubs to fine dining with local produce. 4 Burnby Hall, Pocklington Bishop Burton Discover the historic centre of Ryedale Beverley Marvellous Market Towns & Vibrant Villages Bishop Burton Arts, history, food and fish! Driffield is the Capital of the Wolds and a great place to explore especially with its high street full of independent stores and tempting cafes. Market days on Thursdays and Saturdays bring added vibrancy and a chance to try lots of local produce. Pocklington is another favourite with an historic high street, stunning 15th century church and a lovely canal for the perfect afternoon stroll. The town centre offers a great selection of cafes and traditional pubs to enjoy a hearty Yorkshire lunch and if its art and culture you are looking for then make sure you visit the Arts Centre to see the latest exhibition. Still got time to spare in Pocklington? Then head over to Burnby Hall Gardens and see the famous national collection of hardy Water lilies that float serenely on the lakes, browse around the Museum, or interact with the wildlife and feed the enormous coy carp that have made the lakes their home. Discover the home of Dick Turpin Brough teeters on the edge of the Wolds overlooking the Humber. A growing, vibrant town which has seen lots of recent developments but it is its history which captures the imagination of its visitors. For it was here that Dick Turpin, the infamous highwayman, made his home in the Ferry Inn, and also where he was finally captured. History is everywhere Market Weighton is the town famous for being the home of England s tallest man William Bradley born 1787 who grew his way into the Guiness Book of Records. Howden, was presented to the Bishop of Durham in 1080 by William the Conquerer no less and the 13th Century Minster still stands proud by the ancient market cross. Spend some time here enjoying the historic architecture and follow the town trail before exploring one of the many traditional Inns that date back centuries. Canal Head, Driffield It was said that Howden used to have more pubs per square half mile than anywhere else in Britain so - pick one, drink in the history and enjoy a pint of locally brewed ale. Located on a former Roman settlement between Pocklington and York, Malton is a popular and bustling market town with its very own Museum and Priory. Famous author Charles Dickens was a regular visitor to the town and it was here that he wrote one of his most popular works, A Christmas Carol. Malton is also well known for having a terminus for the stunning North Yorkshire Moors Railway and being close to Flamingoland Theme Park and Zoo - the largest theme park in the region - so there is something here for all the family! 5 Beautiful Beverley Cobbled streets, a majestic minster, quaint boutiques and bustling market, the thrill of the races, the calm of a traditional pub you ll find all of this and more in a unique town that is a favourite amongst visitors. Our Great Day! Race Day Beverley Racecourse is just on the edge of town, is one of the oldest flat racing course in the UK and has fixtures across the year. Antique Roadshow Explore the Market Place and cobbled streets and find a souvenir to treasure at an antique store St Crispin Arcade is a great place to start. Awe inspiring architecture A medieval North Bar built in 1409, Georgian townhouses and a market cross erected in 1704 are all worth looking out for in this medieval market town. Minster Magic A gothic masterpiece dating back to 1220 that is considered the finest church in England not classified as a cathedral. Beautiful and serene, a must for every visitor. Real Ale and Yorkshire Roast Food is a big part of Beverley s charm and whether you want tea and cakes, or a local pint and a real Sunday roast, you ll be spoilt for choice with pubs, inns, cafes and restaurants galore. The Elwell Trail The Elwell Trail is a series of 22 replica paintings by eminent local artists Fred and Mary Elwell, placed within Beverley Town centre. These paitings are in locations which take the visitor around key attractions. The Treasure House and Tourist Information centres offer leaflets showing the Trail and also a children s quiz. These are proving to be extremely popular. I love Beverley. We went on a market day and the cobbled square was bustling with people buying everything from crafts and cakes to scarves and local sausages. There were lots of independent stores and antique shops to explore too. We had a great pub lunch and spent the afternoon walking amongst the cows on the Westwood nearby. There s lots to see and we ll definitely be going back! Burton Constable Hall With more than 30 grand rooms this is the epitome of the Elizabethan mansion. Burton Agnes Hall Magnificent Elizabethan house filled with treasures collected over four centuries. Sewerby Hall & Gardens The glorious cliff top location gives stupendous views over the coast. Stewart s Burnby Hall, Gardens & Museum The picturesque gardens feature two lakes which are home to the National Collection of Hardy Water Lilies - the largest collection found in a natural setting in Europe. Wassand Hall A fine Regency house set in beautiful tranquil surroundings, with stunning views of Hornsea Mere. Beverley Minster One of Britain s finest examples of medieval gothic architecture. Skidby Mill & Museum A working early 19th century 4 sailed windmill. Wolds Way Lavender Over 120 different types of Lavenders and Herbs growing in raised beds for easy viewing. A wonderful and relaxing place. The Walled Garden at Scampston Within the 18th century walls of the original kitchen garden for Scampston Hall, the Walled Garden has an exciting and unashamedly modern feel and complements the adjacent 18th century Capability Brown park. We decided to come to the area as we had never been here before but our friends had and said it was a wonderful part of the country - we weren t disappointed. Our favourite day of the trip was when we visited Sewerby Hall & Gardens. It is in such a fantastic location on the cliffs, the views were amazing. We spent time in the gardens and the Hall and they are both just stunning. We then headed to the beach at Bridlington to catch some sunshine and finished the day off with locally caught fish and chips near the harbour. Perfect! Join the throng, sample the produce and treat yourself to some new flavours created here in Hull & East Yorkshire Farming is big business here and so its no surprise that there are some great agricultural shows and farmers markets to visit. Driffield is home to the UK s largest Agricultural show and is a major date in the calendar for visitors and locals alike. The show is packed with the freshest local produce, animals, trade tents, competitions and lots of activities for all the family so is definitely worth a visit in July! If you miss the main show, then don t worry you can still get fabulous field-fresh goodies at one of the many farmers markets that happen each and every week. Dine like a King From award winning pubs to Michelin starred restaurants, the chefs in Hull and East Yorkshire have developed a reputation for amazing cuisine driven by fresh local produce. Whether you want fun family dining, a luxurious Sunday carvery or a romantic meal for two you ll find somewhere special for you. So gourmet dinner, great pub lunch, delicious cream teas or the perfect pint - whatever tickles your taste buds you will find it here in our region, from our region. Yum! Time for tea! If you like your refreshment in a pot and have a sweet tooth then sample as many tea rooms and cafes as you can as the region is full of tempting treats, home baked cakes, cream teas and speciality deserts. The diet can wait til after the holiday! Best in Britain East Yorkshire pub The Pipe and Glass Inn has been named Pub of the Year in the 2012 edition of the Michelin Eating Out in Pubs Guide. The Michelin-starred pub in South Dalton, near Beverley, has been given the prestigious accolade and is well worth a visit - but be sure to book and don t miss out. UK s best Fish & Chips Our region also leads the way on take out food, as the UK s number one fish and chip shop, Fish & Chips at 149, is located in Bridlington serving the freshest fish and the best hand cut chips

9 Feeling independent? The Avenues area of the city, just outside the city centre, is the place to head to if you like your shopping to be a little more quirky and individual. This vibrant area popular with students has been described as the Notting Hill of Hull and is home to a range of independent stores with everything from hand crafted jewellery to cutting edge original clothing from local designers. Bags of Great Shopping Boutique Bonanza! If you re looking for something a little bit out of the ordinary then head to one of the city s many independent boutiques. From mens designer shoes on Saville Street and funky student wear on Newland Avenue to the latest retro chic in Hepworth s arcade, you ll find something that s as individual as you are. Bohemia is a great example as the clothes are designed and made by their own team of young designers and can be adapted to fit you. Bed 14 offers vintage wear and unusual accessories and Polly Anna is the place to go for trendy homewares. New stores pop up all the time so head over there to find the latest must-go-to boutique. From big brands and high street names to independent stores and quirky boutiques you can shop til you drop in Hull. Big brand and beautiful St Stephen s is close to the transport interchange and is home to high street stars like H&M, Topshop and Zara to name but a few. Starbucks, Nandos and Prezzo have also made this their home and there are lots more options to choose from for some great food and drink when you need a break from the stores. Reel Cinema is on the second floor and as well as offering mainstream films is also home to the city s art house cinema Hull Screen. Prospect Centre appeals to everyone with a range of stores on offer from homeware at Wilkinsons or cards at Clintons to jewellery at H Samuels and fashion at Miss Selfridges. It also has its own coffee shop and a florists right in the middle. Princes Quay has a stunning location, hovering on stilt like legs above the water in Princes Dock, right in the heart of the city. More than 70 stores across three levels including Monsoon, Primark and Warehouse for the fashionista and the Disney store for the young at heart! You can also shop eat and relax here as the centre also boasts waterfront dining with big names like Pizza Express and a fantastic 10 screen digital multiplex cinema all under one roof, so its a great location whatever the weather. Are you being served? If you want lots of big brands all under one roof then check out Hull s department stores. House of Fraser is the largest and is an aladdin s cave of great departments from cosmetics brands like Dior and Molten Brown to fashion big hitters like Karen Millen, Mint Velvet and Kurt Geiger. Embrace you inner culture vulture and enjoy everything the city has to offer. The magnificent City Hall is a grade II listed building right in the centre of the city. This majestic building welcomes large audiences to enjoy major rock, comedy and pop acts as well as hosting key city events and functions. Music is at its core though and lovers of classical music travel far and wide to catch the major British and European orchestras that come each year as part of the International Masters Orchestra concert season. Drama Queen Hull is home to two theatres that host an array of live performances, events and musical extravaganzas throughout the year. Hull Truck Theatre is a city gem and has a very special place in the hearts of the people of Hull. It is also internationally renowned and has touring productions that ensure the Hull Truck name is known across the UK. From contemporary plays and edge of your seat dramas to stand up comedy acts and live music nights, Hull Truck always offers a very special night out. Hull New Theatre also offers a diverse programme of shows and productions but is perhaps best loved for its touring west end musicals, high energy pantomimes and stunning ballets and operas. City of a thousand pictures The Ferens Art Gallery houses thousands of works of art from almost every period. It's permanent collection includes works from Canaletto, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth and it welcomes a stunning collection of touring exhibitions each year. 11 City Flavours Peruse Paragon Quarter Whether you are looking for a delicious post shopping menu, after dinner drinks, a casual cafe bar or a brasserie bursting with freshly cooked local produce you will find it in this part of town close to the transport interchange. Nearby in St Stephen s shopping centre you will also find big name chains like Nandos and Prezzo as well as 24 hour parking. Exotic Moroccan, tempting Italian, fabulous fish or tasty tapas - Hull offers it all with a huge range of restaurants, bars and bistros to choose from, many making fantastic use of great Yorkshire produce. An appetite for the Avenues Princes and Newland Avenues are the more relaxed and some would say bohemian parts of the city popular with diners, students and those looking for something more independent. Hull and East Yorkshire is alive with great events throughout the year so whenever you visit make sure you check out whats on so you don t miss out! /events Hull Comedy Festival - Oct to Nov Now in its 6th year this is a firm fixture in the comedy calendar. Previous years have seen national acts including Al Murray, Paddy McGuiness, Frankie Boyle, Russell Howard, Alistair McGowan and Sarah Millican take to the local stages. Tickets go fast for headline acts so for all the latest updates and info visit The Seabird Spectacle - May to July Which includes lunch, a trip to RSPB Bempton where you ll see and learn about Gannets, Puffins, Guillemots, Razorbills, Kittiwakes and Fulmars. Hull & East Riding Heritage Days - Sept Celebrating England s fantastic architecture and culture these days offer free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or charge for admission, as well as providing a wide range of tours, events and activities which bring to life local history and culture. Beverley Food Festival - Oct The Beverley Food Festival will return for a seventh year in 2012 with a family day of food, festivities and fun! There will be a variety of stalls selling local produce, cookery theatre marquee, street entertainment, Mayoral charity BBQ, competitions and much more all located in the stunning market square of this beautiful historic town. Malton Food Festival - May Malton Food Lovers Festival will be held on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th May 2012 in Malton Market Place. Malton Food Lovers Festival is a celebration of Yorkshire s very best produce. The festival features chef demonstrations from top local and national chefs, a producers market with over 100 stallholders selling the best produce from around Yorkshire as well as a Beer and Wine Festival in the Milton Rooms. Beverley Folk Acoustic, Routes Festival - June Local festival with global appeal. Three nights and two days of music, dance, comedy and the spoken word with top national and international artists. 14 Great attractions for all the family 1 The Deep What you need to know: The Deep, one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world is located in Hull. This award-winning visitor attraction is home to over 3,500 fish including spectacular sharks and rays making it the perfect family day out.the dramatic building which overlooks the Humber estuary was designed by Sir Terry Farrell and is only a few minutes walk from Hull Marina and the museums quarter. The town trail depicts 39 medieval guilds and trades represented by sculptures and works of art. You can split the walk up into four different walks or spend the whole day completing it in one go. Pick up a trail booklet at the Tourist Information Office and explore! Visit beverleytowntrail.co.uk You ll love it if: you want a fun way to explore and learn at the same time 4 Fish Trail What you need to know: Hull s unique pavement of fish is the city s most popular trail. Find and follow the 41 fish sculptures all made from traditional materials and discover the ancient side of the city as you go. Look out for the plaice in the market place, the electric eel outside the electricity sub station and the shark outside the bank! Be sure to ask at Hull Tourist Information Centre for a free trail leaflet. You ll love it if: You want a really fun way to explore the city 5 Bondville Model Village What you need to know: Located in the beautiful village of Sewerby near the stunning cliff tops, this is one of the finest model villages in the country with over 200 buildings including a castle, ruined abbey and harbour. There is even a model railway with trains pulling its carriages through the model village and across the river where the boats ad cruisers are moored. You ll love it if: you think small is beautiful! Whether you want to explore works of art, underwater worlds and beautiful parks or simply to step back in history - you'll find it all here in Hull & East Yorkshire 8 Humber Bridge What you need to know: When it opened it was the world s longest single span suspension bridge and today is still in the top five. It towers 30 metres above the River Humber and has a 2220 metre long walkway across the bridge that you can walk across. Underneath the bridge is a country park with children s area, picnic benches and some beautiful walks. Visit humberbridge.co.uk You ll love it if: you want spectacular views! 6 Sewerby Hall & Gardens What you need to know: Set in acres of beautiful countryside, with breathtaking views of the Yorkshire coast, the award winning gardens and grade one listed hall offer a perfect day out. Fabulous tea rooms, a 9 hole pitch and putt golf course, a packed arts and exhibitions programme and it s very own zoo mean that there is guaranteed fun for all the family. Wander Wander - Art on the Yorkshire Wolds Way is the UK s first public arts project on a national trail and a pioneering development that will create an evocative attraction comprising of landmark art installations along the national trail. The artwork, Enclosure Rites, includes a winding chalk path edged by 400 split fence posts leading to a raised viewing platform and a newly created dew pond. Ten warrior figures carved in lime-stained oak - will guard the work and are based on archaeological finds from the region dating from the Saxon/ Roman eras and are now on display in Malton Museum. Try clambering up near Thornwick Nab for some very special views. With stunning coastal countryside and some of the best clean, safe beaches in the UK nestled alongside funfairs, arcades, candy floss and great entertainment venues like The Spa Bridlington, this is a fabulous location for a traditional seaside holiday.
