The President s Minute Our Memorial Weekend Outing in the Mojave Desert at LDMA was considered a success by all those that attended. As always, there were some members who arrive early in the week, but officially the outing started on Friday. The desert was on the warm side, somewhere in the 90 s with a little wind going from breezy to heavy at times. It is good that we had planed the use of LDMA s club house for our potlucks, and we thank Doug and Bea for their hospitality. The wind during the day made it just bearable to do a little dry washing, with the emphasis on a little especially in the afternoon heat. The cagey old desert prospectors ( you know who you are) started digging around 5:30 in the morning and quit by 10, while we city folk prospectors hadn t figured it out, as we started shoveling after breakfast and were useless by noontime. We had a good time, just did not move that much dirt. I do believe it is time to consider dredging until it cools down in the fall. Friday night we had the chili cook-off with 9 entries in the contest. There were none of those concoctions that were brow-and-bead-sweatinghot as in years past. There were 40 plus members who participated in voting, and it was close, as all the entries were delicious. The winner will receive an engraved copper gold pan for her award winning efforts Congratulations Andrea Ayers of Bakersfield. Saturday s potluck and drawing had about 80 hungry members devouring hotdogs, hamburgers and fish, the later being compliments of Tom Grogan. This is the first time in quite awhile that we had more side dishes than could be consumed, and this was also true with all the desserts. My thanks goes to all those who donated their time cooking, cleaning and picking-up after the potluck and raffle. And, thank you Bryan DeGhetto for organizing the weekend s activities and food. You did especially well considering this was your first time. As to the gold, it was being found, but not in any great quantities. I did not hear of any large nuggets being found either dry washing or by metal detecting, (wondering if Bill and Donna took the weekend off). But, yes, there was gold to be had. The key, you needed to buy tickets for the raffle. Two Members, Joanne Johnston and Jack Dutchess won three nuggets apiece. Believe those nuggets will help time fly on Joanne s drive north on I-5 back to Oregon. All four winners of the larger nuggets 2 The Golden Aura

were present. The Club thanks all of you who participated in the raffle. It is the second consecutive year that I have been shut out, so one day someone needs to teach me how to palm a ticket so I can increase my odds in future raffles. Our June Outing will be held at Condor2 or Rose Creek. It is hoped there is more water in the creek than last year. Since we filed this claim three plus years ago, we have not had the opportunity as a club to work it properly. As you may recall, our Outing last June at the Condor2, there wasn t any water. More descriptively, one could say it was just barely seeping through the rocks. The members who attended worked the same small muddy pond, not the ideal situation for dredging, and, the gold was disappointing. The most successful Members were those who took bank material and ran it through a sluice, not a lot of gold, but at least the specs were bigger. If you should attend this outing, you can either camp at the claim, or find a member of LDMA and be their guest and then camp at LDMA s Italian Bar location. They have flush toilets, a hot shower and there is usually a card game at night. If you end up being a guest of a member, do make a monetary contribution for the privilege of you using LDMA s facilities. If the Outing at the Condor2 is considered successful by those attending, the July Outing will also be there, assuming there will be enough water. HMC1 HMC2 & Amazing Grace: We have received a letter from the BLM recognizing our rights to access and work these claims without having to obtain any special permit. A copy of this letter will be sent to all Members under separate cover during the month of June. This is not the perfect letter, but it is as close as we will get. It does acknowledge our rights under the 1872 Mining Act, to access our claim, but not much more.. Our speaker for the month of June will be Mario or Chris from Cal Sluice. Cal Sluice is the manufacturer of what I understand to be an over/under sluice box design. We will be getting the Show & Tell on this unique product. Do keep in mind that we are continually looking for guest speakers and we are open to any and all of your suggestions. Hope to see you all at the Condor2 at the end of June. Happy Prospecting Steve Orange County 49ers 3

CLUB MEMBER FINDS 8.7 OUNCE NUGGET Terry Hughes' seven-year hobby may have paid off big time after he found a rare gold nugget with an estimated value of $10,000. The 62-year-old Moorpark resident has been searching the California desert for years in hopes of finding the big one. On Memorial Day, he apparently $10,000 Gold Nugget (Courtesy Ventura County Star) did just that. He spotted a rare 8.7-ounce gold nugget. Hughes says others were hunting for gold as well, but he was alone when his metal detector signaled a find. On Thursday, he took it to Patrick Keene, co-owner of Keene Engineering, for the official weigh-in. Keene Engineering is one of the world's largest suppliers of portable mining equipment. A nugget that big is extremely rare, Keene said. Hughes began searching for gold as a hobby years ago after his oldest son found a "dot of gold" during an outing at Lake Isabella. That's when he says he got the "gold fever." Until now, the largest nugget Hughes had unearthed was a 1-ounce, 7-pennyweight nugget found the week between Christmas and New Year's. Keene said that to his knowledge, Hughes' latest find is the largest piece to come out of the desert in the last 20 years. Hughes says he's received collectors' value estimates as high as $20,000 on his nugget. But, he has no plans to cash in. He says he values the treasure of the find more than it's worth. 7 Wagon Master s Report Well everyone what a great time I had on Memorial weekend I am sure you all had a great time too. First I would like to send out a BIG Thank You to the LDMA staff for letting us invade the Club House. A BIG BIG Thank You to all the people to helped with setting up, cooking the meat (Fish was awesome) and clean up. Thank You Skipper for taking the trash to the dump. What can I say to all the people who cooked and brought food for the pot luck and Chili cook off but MMMMMMMMMMMMM GOOD it was great. I went around and tried every dish. This was a tough Taske but I felt as Wagon Master it was my job to check for quality. (you all passed) How about all that Gold in the raffle. This is the first time all the Big Nugget winners were present at the outing. Steve sure did make the raffle fun and those nuggets Steve bought for the raffle were just beautiful. It was sure was nice meeting and talking with all of you, Hearing all those Gold stories. We never got the big Camp fire going but it was too windy any hoo. Our June 27/28 outing will be up in Gold Country on Condor 2 / Rose Creek. I hope the water will be running and not trickling. We will try to camp at Italian Bar. You need you be a LDMA member to stay so if you re not you should try to hook up with a member and get on as a guest. There is nice camping at the site but you won t be able to get a trailer or camper in there. to many low trees. 6 The Golden Aura

Orange County 49ers General Meeting Minutes May 19, 2009 The meeting was called to order by President, Steve Reid followed by the flag salute. The motion carried to accept the Treasurer s report from Kathi Brown. Wagonmaster, Bryan DeGhetto spoke about the big Memorial Day outing to be held at the LDMA camp at Duisenderg. There will be a special location set aside to camp for those people who are not members of LDMA. The chili cook-off will be held on Friday evening. The potluck and raffle will be held on Saturday evening. Skip Skipper, Vice President reports that the club has received a letter from the BLM allowing us to access our claims in the area south of Randsburg. Please remember that we are not camping there but rather occupying the claims. Also, Stan Kinkade s memorial service will be postponed until the fall of this year. PLP representative, Paul Toepel reports on a bill for watershed areas to become federally controlled areas. This is another attempt to control and/or eliminate our mining rights. The motion carried to donate $1,000 to PLP. John Forrey announced that Pedersen s Metal Detectors has a new employee who is friendly to club members and the public. Pete apologizes for any past problems with that former employee. Cheri Gray won the gold nugget and Joseph Peralta took home his share of the 50/50 drawing. Skip Skipper pocketed the gold nugget door prize. Secretary, Ann McFarland Orange County 49ers 7

Thank You Letter for Chuck Brand finding the $15, Ring I lost my ring while spending the day at the beach with my friend Karol and her two children. I noticed my ring was not on my finger, as I sat on the beach, but I figured I took it off before I came to the beach. I got home around 6:30pm and frantically searched the house for my ring and unfortunately came to the conclusion I had taken it off to put sunscreen on my son, then got out of my chair without placing the ring back on my finger. My daughter and I drove back to Redondo Beach and arrived just as the sun was setting. We searched and searched for my ring without any success. I cried all the way home. Karol then called and told me about her brother, Chuck. He might be able to help find it with his metal detector. I told her I would appreciate any help he could offer me. Well, the phone rang the next day at 8:00am and Karol said Can you be ready in 15 minutes? I,of course, said Yes, and thank you. I met Chuck with Karol, her two children, and my two children to defy all odds...have Chuck find my wedding ring at Redondo Beach. Chuck proceeded to gear up and went right to work. He methodically covered area after area. After about 30 minutes, I was beginning to give up hope as the area was large, the sand had been combed that morning, and chances were high that someone else, with a metal detector, had already found my special ring. Then low and behold, Chuck defied all odds and delivered what he promised to do...he found my wedding ring. I thanked Chuck and cried with happiness. Chuck is a true friend as he was kind enough to help me. We can t thank him enough for helping to find my ring. My ring has three stones, the middle represents my husband, David, and the two side stones represent my two children, Madison and Maxwell. I received this ring as a gift two years ago from my husband to replace my original wedding ring as it represents our family. A BIG Thank You to Chuck, as he made a real difference in our lives. Chuck, Thanks again for finding Jill s wedding ring. The sentimental value of the ring is beyond words! We are still amazed that you were actually able to find it, and are grateful to have a friend like you! You are our Hero! Regards, David (Jill s Husband) 8 The Golden Aura
