3 THE STAGECOACH BAR An American Crossroads When is a bar more than a bar? When it s the Stagecoach Bar in Wilson, Wyoming. Situated beneath the alpine splendor of the Teton Mountains, the modest watering hole in the Jackson Hole area affectionately known as the Coach has long been welcoming an eclectic and evolving cocktail of characters. Regulars include cowboys and millionaires, tourists and extreme athletes, drifters and musicians, disco dancers and two-steppers both young and old. Airs Tuesday, June 3, at 8:00 p.m. MT/PT This film paints an intimate portrait of a roadhouse and crossroads that have been creating their own brand of community for more than 70 years in ways that both define and defy traditional visions of the Wild West. Longtime patrons, members of the in-house band, and the staff reflect on the establishment s changes over the years from wild rodeo entertainment and legendary cowboy brawls to mellower evenings of live music and dancing. Airs Sundays, beginning June 15, at 9:00 p.m. MT/PT A new season begins for MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! with two new productions a legal drama/suspense thriller about a rising courtroom star and a pathological killer he has freed, and the second season of young Endeavour Morse s cases. Escape Artist (June 15 and 22) stars David Tennant (DOCTOR WHO, GREAT PERFORMANCES Hamlet ) as Will Burton, a junior barrister who specializes in spiriting people out of tight corners. Nicknamed The Escape Artist, his talents get a prime suspect in a horrific murder trial acquitted. But the two men soon find themselves as personal adversaries in a deadly game. Director Brian Welch reached for an atmosphere reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock, using subtle lighting and interesting angles. It really is all about what you hold back and what you show, Welch says about creating suspense on the screen. Creator and writer David Wolstencroft (MI5) says, The law often seems like an intellectual exercise, but scratch under the surface and it s all blood and guts. I wanted to write a thriller set in the legal world that s as much about those primal feelings as it is about the twists and turns of the case. Later in the month, DC Endeavour Morse returns to work with Oxford City police four months after a brush with death to begin Season 2 of Endeavour (June 29-July 20). Shaun Evans portrays the young detective learning the ropes years before he becomes known as Inspector Morse. He is still minus a signature red Jaguar but his brain is in high gear as he tackles crime in the university town. idahoptv.org 3

4 In this new fourpart series that airs on two consecutive nights, Monty Python s Michael Palin visits the fifth-largest Airs Monday, June 9, and Tuesday, June 10 at 9:00 p.m. MT/PT country on the planet, just in time for the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament. Taking up over half of South America, Brazil is a mix of races, religions, sophistication, wildness, wealth, poverty and unexplored wilderness. The country is considered one of the rising global powers with vast natural resources, a burgeoning industrial base and a strong currency. BRAZIL WITH MICHAEL PALIN takes viewers along on the trip of a lifetime. Brazil was a wonderland, and the Brazilians themselves are as tolerant and easy-going a people as I ve found anywhere in the world, a therapeutic contrast after the angst of Eastern Europe, Palin writes on his website. For me, Brazil stands out as a country unlike any other. I remember this coming home to me most forcibly when I first set foot in the city of Salvador. Twenty-five years and eight series after AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS (his first televised journey), I realized my jaw could still drop. The world was still full of surprises. On his trip, Palin meets the indigenous tribes living in the heart of Amazonia, travels to the giant mineral deposits in Monas Gerais, stops in the capital city of Brazilia, and of course takes part in the festivities in Rio. AMERICAN PHARAOH Airs Monday, June 16, at 10:00 p.m. MT/PT This documentary premieres in conjunction with the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and goes behind the scenes with the Egyptian national soccer team the Pharaohs and its American coach, Bob Bradley. Egyptian filmmaker Hossam Aboul-Magd follows the team s efforts to qualify for soccer s ultimate event for the first time in more than 20 years. In production for more than two years, the film sets the soccer team s challenge to succeed against the backdrop of the political turmoil in Egypt today. This is not just a film about soccer, says Aboul-Magd. This is about my country, my team, a coach I respect, and the dream of capturing the World Cup in spite of enormous challenges. I see the goal of developing a strong team, in the middle of a revolution, as a metaphor for the rebuilding of Egypt. When Hossam approached PBS with this idea, we were immediately on board, says Bill Gardner, PBS senior director of programming. This film not only tells a compelling story, but also provides a unique window into Egyptians ongoing struggle to define themselves during a time of national unrest. The journey of the Pharaohs on the road to the World Cup with the perspective of their American coach makes this a truly unusual and intimate film. After a successful run as coach of the U.S. men s national soccer team, reaching the second round in the 2010 World Cup, Bradley signed on to coach the Egyptian team in September Faced with ongoing violence and political strife within the country, the team must remain united and work together to reach their ambitious goal. Making it to the World Cup will not solve the lack of education and poverty in Egypt, says Bradley, but it would be a great symbol for the country. 4 Idaho Public Television Channels June 2014

From the first faltering steps of Breeze, a newborn, to the experiences of elderly matriarch Babylon, this miniseries explores behavior and relationships revealing elephants as the caring and compassionate creatures they are. Their usually hidden world includes the complexities of family life, their intelligence, and the depth of their emotions. The series also follows the work of biologist Iain Douglas-Hamilton and his daughter Saba and their Save the Elephants team. Their efforts include tracking elephants, fitting tracking collars, and developing the relationship between humans and elephants. The series also provides an opportunity to see these animals through the eyes of those who know them best such as David Daballen, a bright young Samburu protégé of Douglas-Hamilton s, who can instantly recognize 500 different elephants by sight alone. The series first aired in the United Kingdom on BBC One in January 2009 to 4.2 million viewers. 14 Idaho Public Television Channels June 2014

18 Four Programs Remember World War II To commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day on June 6, four independent films about World War II air the first week of this month. The first is D-Day 360 (Monday, June 2, at 9:00 p.m. MT/PT), which premiered last month. This documentary, the lineup s lone repeat, looks at the logistic challenges the Allies faced on D-Day. Escape in the Pacific: 1943 (Tuesday, June 3, at 9:00 p.m. MT/PT) delivers a dramatic account of the only successful group escape from a Japanese POW camp. Ten American prisoners of war survivors of the infamous Bataan Death March and the Fall of Corregidor and two Filipino convicts carry out a daring escape from one of Japan s most notorious prison camps, the Davao Penal Colony on the Philippine island of Mindanao. Escape is immediately followed by Day of Days: June 6, 1944 (10:00 p.m. MT/ PT). On June 6, 1944, thousands of Allied soldiers landed on the shores of northern France tasked with liberating Western Europe from Nazi tyranny. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landing, four D-Day veterans gather at the Museum of World War II outside of Boston. Death Camp Treblinka: Survivor Stories (Wednesday June 4, at 10:00 p.m. MT/PT) is about the extermination camp where more than 800,000 Polish Jews perished. Only two men can bear final witness to its terrible crimes. Samuel Willenberg and Kalman Taigman were slave laborers who escaped in a dramatic revolt in August One would seek vengeance in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, while the other would appear in the Nazi war trial of Adolf Eichmann in This British film documents their amazing survivor stories and the tragic fate of their families, and offers new insights into a nearly forgotten chapter of Nazi Germany s atrocities. 18 Idaho Public Television Channels June 2014

26 26 Mondays, June 23 and 30, at 10:00 p.m. MT/PT To kick off its 27th season, POV presents two films whose lead characters epitomize the enormous power of the human spirit. When I Walk (June 23), produced by filmmaker Jason DaSilva, is a highly personal account of his battle with multiple sclerosis. The following week American Revolutionary: The Evolution of Grace Lee Boggs (June 30) tells the story of the 98-year-old Chinese American philosopher, writer and activist. Boggs challenges a new generation to throw off old assumptions, think creatively, and redefine revolution for our times. Jason DaSilva was 25 years old and a rising independent filmmaker when a diagnosis of MS changed everything and inspired him to make another film. When I Walk is a candid and brave chronicle of one man s struggle to adapt to the harsh realities of MS while trying to hold on to his personal and creative life. When DaSilva finally has his own emotional breakdown in front of the camera, he bemoans the rapid pace of the disease. Despite his determination to adapt and make the most of what he has, he discovers that his disabilities have intensified so quickly that he barely has time to compensate for one affliction before something worse arrives. It s difficult to see how anyone could rise above such a situation, much less complete a movie in it. Yet he perseveres in amazing ways. I wanted to capture this transformative experience becoming disabled because I hadn t seen it done before, and people need to see how a degenerative disease impacts the lives of those living with it, says DaSilva. My diagnosis was not the end of the world. Instead, it has proven to be a new way for me to see and be in the world. American Revolutionary shows how Grace Lee Boggs adopted her radical ways long before the turbulent 1960s. It follows her path from her first community campaign as a tenants rights organizer through the 1941 March on Washington movement, which demanded jobs for African Americans in defense plants. The film traces her mentorship under the West Indian Marxist writer and theorist C.L.R. James; her 1953 marriage to Alabama-born James Boggs (auto worker and author of The American Revolution: Pages From a Negro Worker s Notebook); and her split with orthodox Marxism in favor of black revolution. It also examines her preference for the ideas of Malcolm X over those of Martin Luther King, Jr.; and her emergence as a spokesperson for Black Power. 9:00 As Time Goes By In search of a hobby to occupy his time, Lionel takes to model-boat building. The Boise couple joined IdahoPTV s Retired Senior and Volunteer Program (RSVP) in 2008 and have been major contributors to the group ever since. Bill and Sharon not only volunteer their time, but they also help us to coordinate this group of wonderful volunteers that help us with tasks throughout the year tasks that would otherwise take staff time and money, says Shane Chariton, IdahoPTV major giving director. In turn, we can earmark more of the funding from our financial supporters for programming and other expenses. For more than six years, their time and commitment have gone beyond just hours worked. They are truly part of the Idaho Public Television family. The Ehaszes were among the more than 900 volunteers who assisted IdahoPTV with FESTIVAL 2014, Chariton notes. Along with the many other volunteers who helped keep things running smoothly, we thank Bill and Sharon for their time and effort, he adds. This recognition is a small token of our appreciation. 30 Idaho Public Television Channels June 2014
