LIFE ON THE REEF combines cutting-edge cinematography with documentary storytelling to create a unique tapestry of the world s greatest marine wilderness. Airs Wednesdays, July 1-15, at 7:00 p.m. MT/PT In this three-part BBC production, veterinarian teams around the world undertake groundbreaking operations to save, or at least improve, the lives of wild animals. Each episode tells four remarkable stories of animals in need and the dedicated caregivers who push the boundaries of veterinary medicine to help them. In West Africa, doctors rehabilitate a gorilla called Shufai who is shot in the arm by poachers. A vet in Japan invents a new kind of underwater medicine to treat manta rays. Rosemary the orangutan has microsurgery in Borneo to restore her sight. And human heart technology is adapted at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago to prevent heart disease in chimpanzees. 6 Presents New Films Child welfare, Internet addiction, the Syrian crisis, and the ritual of tea are among the subjects tackled by POV documentaries Mondays at 10:00 p.m. MT/PT this month. Do parents charged with neglect deserve a second chance from the child welfare system? Tough Love (July 6) grapples with this question as it follows two parents a single father in Seattle and a newly married mother in New York City struggling to reunite with their children after losing custody. Acknowledging past mistakes due to addiction, poverty and poor choices, Patrick and Hannah must now contend with the bureaucracy of Child Protective Services to prove they deserve a second chance as parents. Concerns for child welfare of a different kind are explored in Web Junkie (July 13). China declares Internet addiction a national health crisis, and filmmakers are granted extraordinary access to the government s cure a military style anti-addiction boot camp in Beijing designed for patients 13 to 18 years old. Observing the progress of three Chinese teenagers, all obsessive Internet gamers, Web Junkie considers whether the rehabilitation program is too harsh or if it might serve as a model for the rest of the world. Abdul Basset Saroot, once a teenage goalkeeper for the Syrian national soccer team, becomes a peaceful advocate of Arab Spring reforms and then an armed opponent of President Bashar al-assad. Return to Homs (July 20) chronicles Saroot s transformation and heroic struggle to save civilians in his hometown of Homs from annihilation by their own leader. Filled with harrowing scenes of urban combat, the film is a testament to the resilience of the Syrian people as well as a plea for intervention in a conflict the world continues to overlook. Finally, subtler strengths are explored in Tea Time (July 27). The film takes an intimate look at a group of Chilean women who gather for tea each month for 60 years throughout an era of intense social and personal change. Filmed over a recent span of five years, the women reminisce on their youth, commemorate life s sorrows and joys, and help each other cope with infidelity, illness and loss. 6 Week of July 1-4, :00/4:00p MT/PT 8:00/7:00p MT/PT Wednesday, 1 Thursday, 2 Friday, 3 Saturday, 4 MT Odd Squad Nightly Business Report PBS NewsHour Operation Wild PT WordGirl PBS NewsHour Last Tango in Halifax Midsomer Murders Last Year s Model, Part 1 Idaho Public Television Channels July 2015 All Times are MT (Mountain Time)/PT (Pacific Time) Growing a Greener World Cyberchase Knitting Daily Beauty of Oil Painting Cooking With Nick Stellino Joanne Weir Gets Fresh Farm School (Athol, MA) Digit s B-Day Surprise Stitch Definition Barnyard Roses Veal Appeal Spring Vegetables Hidden Killers of the Tudor Home Dialogue Frontline (90 minutes) Richard Russo Growing Up Trans MT Odd Squad Nightly Business Report PBS NewsHour Doc Martin PT WordGirl The Apple Doesn t Fall PBS NewsHour Last of the Summer Wine As Time Goes By Keeping Up Appearances Vintage Red Green Show Car Pool Growing a Greener World Cyberchase Knit and Crochet Now! 7 THEFRANK Airs Thursday, July 23, at 8:00 p.m. MT/PT; repeats Sunday, July 26, at 7:00 p.m. MT/PT The largest forested wilderness in the lower 48 states lies in the heart of Idaho. The Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness is sometimes simply called The Frank in honor of the late U.S. Sen. Frank Church, who successfully guided the 2.3 million-acre wilderness designation through Congress. In back of that proposal was a coalition of seasoned conservationists and a major grassroots effort throughout Idaho. When we asked people to describe The Frank, they used words like remote, and magical and vast. I can understand why those words immediately come to mind, says executive producer Bruce Reichert. Several of us spent days hiking through parts of it for our 50 Years of Wilderness program; it s larger than several states! We wanted to explore how it came to be and who pushed to make it an official wilderness. We just figured it was time to devote an entire show to this remote, magical vastness. OUTDOOR IDAHO travels deep into The Frank to document the essence of this vast expanse of mountainous wilderness. 17 Ron Pisaneschi General Manager Ron s PICKS Marine Life Explored in Three-Day Live Event A t the end of next month, we present a live television and multimedia event, BIG BLUE LIVE. Scientists, filmmakers and photographers, animal behaviorists, and other experts come together for two weeks in late August and early September. They will document the extraordinary rejuvenation of the once endangered and now thriving ecosystem of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in California. Some of the world s most charismatic marine creatures humpback whales, blue whales, sea lions, dolphins, elephant seals, sea otters, great white sharks, shearwaters and brown pelicans convene in this once-a-year confluence. BIG BLUE LIVE airs live on PBS on three nights, August 31-September 2. On air, streaming online and in social media, viewers can watch one of nature s great reality shows. The event will be delivered through stateof-the-art filming technologies and live reports from air, sea, and below the waves. The multi-platform event will be anchored by on-air correspondents from a reporting hub at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and from aboard NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Office of National Marine Sanctuaries research vessels. Leading scientists and other experts will provide additional insights. The event will be hosted by Dr. M. When Sarah unwittingly discovers a potentially scandalous Bligh family secret, her future becomes forever linked with theirs. This instantly irresistible saga begins with a shipboard encounter so stuffed with urgency, intimations of romance, menace and vivid characters radiating a sense of power, it s clear that wherever this ship heads it s good to be aboard, writes TV reviewer Dorothy Rabinowitz in the Wall Street Journal. For all its dark dimensions, A PLACE TO CALL HOME is roughly what the title suggests a captivatingly filmed, deeply romantic drama of immense intelligence distinguished by a uniformly superb cast. 24 Idaho Public Television Channels July 2015

The lush and beautiful film of his travels is mixed with historic footage and images to illustrate the story. He looks at how it all began by dropping flags at outposts and building trade for English ships and England itself. Years of more overt control follow while spreading civil government techniques around the world. Paxton seeks traces of the empire as he talks with individuals in India, Singapore, Canada, Kenya, Egypt and other nations that were once part of the empire. Missing is Paxman s abrasive, combative and critical persona seen on BBC s Newsnight. Here he is a mannered, well-spoken narrator, who criticizes neither Britain nor its colonies, protectorates or other territories. But he offers some personal insights along the way such as his description of Lawrence of Arabia as romantic, idealistic, dashing and slightly nuts. idahoptv.org 25
