1 The Caravaner Welcome Stagecoach Trails! Hosted by the Firesiders At LaPaz there were 42 rigs, 1 first timer and 2 guests. Wind, rain, mud and yelping coyotes were daily occurrences in the park. The Roadrunners hosted and they did not let the weather intrude on the fun nor did volunteers shy away from checking in rigs with one hand, while holding down blowing flaps of the host tent with the other. Thank you very much for your help! Thinking out of the box, Connie Johnson, Peggy Zabel and their trusty driver, Herb Johnson III rode in their SUV from rig to rig hawking Pot of Gold tickets and Lazy Daze Recipe books. It was so appreciated they did it again the next day for those who missed the opportunity to buy. Their thoughtfulness saved boots and shoes from being clogged with mud and as a result sales exploded. Bingo, headed by Connie Johnson was played and greeting cards were created by the craft class led by Caryl Fisher in the Pavilion under warm propane heaters. There was a concern about playing Washer Toss up to the last minute but on Saturday morning the sky cleared, the sun came out and WT Director, Gary Wells setup boards in the horse shoe pit area filled with sand. Herb Johnson III and Betty Boschma won 1st place and Claude Potts and Melissa Johnson won second place. Later, the shoppers among us walked to the little flea market just up the road from the RV park where interesting and unique items were on sale at bargain prices. Greg Young and Peggy Zabel led their first General Meeting for 2017 and it was then that we knew it s going to be another good year. We look forward to seeing everyone at Stagecoach! 3 Bingo Glad to see Bingo back in the activity list. Washer Toss Contest Fourteen teams braved the elements after a rainy Friday afternoon and night. We were able to find a n area that was level and not a lot of sticky mud. We held a double elimination tournament with Claude Potts and Melissa Johnson, yes another Johnson, winning the winners bracket. Herb Johnson and Betty Boschma came out on top of the loser bracket. Herb and Betty were able to beat Claude and Melissa the two games necessary to win the tournament. In all the years we have been playing Washer Toss, although she has placed 2nd, and has qualified for the Phillippi this is Betty s 1st win. Also Melissa Johnson has qualified for the Phillippi Tournament in December. Congratulation to Herb and Betty for their win. Lazy Daze Caravaner 3
4 Ed Widmer was born on a farm in Ellandale ND in 1927 and his family raised different types of grain crops. He left home in 1945 at 18 years old, enlisted in the Navy reserves and began his basic training at Great Lakes Navy base. As there was a need for Seabees he was sent to Providence RI to complete his training as VE Day was announced. His next duty station was Camp Parks in Calif, where he and his Seabee company were loaded on a merchant ship. They set sail from San Francisco for the Aleutian Islands as replacement for troops returning from overseas. While en route his ship was diverted to a harbor in Yokohama Japan. They spent 10 days there and a change in orders sent them sailing to Guam (Pacific s Naval Supply Center) aboard a Naval vessel. Ed spent the next year on Guam working on water and power supply systems for the Island. He returned home in 1946 and remained in the reserves. He traveling to New York City boarding the USS Wisconsin and training with a cruise to the Panama Canal and back. He left the farm and went to Washington State, working construction on several dam projects, one on the Columbia river. He ended up moving to Calif and purchased his house in Montclair in Ed worked as a carpenter then superintendent for the next three decades. Ed made his own motor home on a 1950 ford 1 1/2 ton truck frame, all home built with his carpenter skills. He and his wife Violet purchased their first LD in 1977 # 944. He is looking forward to completing his 325th caravan and receiving his badge at the April caravan on his 90th birthday. He has three sons, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
