3 The DRIPLINE Report From PPCC President Patricia Fox Another great Fall Tour! Nice colors & perfect Weather. There were a total of 18 Corvairs & 35 Members. A Great spot for lunch. Thank you Randy Karl for coordinating everything. A few members we haven t seen in a while. Great to catch up with you again. It appears we have finally zeroed in on a good day for our meetings. 3 rd Sunday of each month works for most and attendance is up. Mark your calendar for next meeting on (small error in Dripline). Paul must have been anxious about his anniversary vacation! J Change can be confusing, but we hope many can be at future meetings with this schedule. A few have taken over the photography projects thanks for helping Paul publish a colorful newsletter. The year has gone by quickly and I have enjoyed the spotlight as President! We will be looking for someone to take my place for next year, so please let us know if you can be there for the Club. The rewards are small, but it is a learning experience, which can be a good thing. Many of our club members have been taking care of various positions for a long period of time. We will be voting soon! Something to consider. Our last meeting revealed the need for repair knowledge, exchange of parts and a few Corvair stories. Garrie still has a few parts from the Wiltrout contribution. Please contact him if there is an interest or need. There has been quite a bit of activity on our Facebook page and people from other countries jump in too. You may want to check the site & see the originator of the cookie burger. Randy Karl is forever improving our website & he welcomes input and photos, too. Thank you Randy for your time, effort and energy in all of our club events. Also remember, our 2013 Tri State has been set for Cripple Creek, CO. The location appears to have drawn substantial interest and details will be discussed at several meetings. With a team effort, our Tri State is sure to be a huge success. Next Meeting= 3 rd Sunday, in October! CORRECTION REMINDER Our esteemed club President was correct, I was too busy looking forward to our anniversary cruise and incorrectly stated the date of the next meeting. Please make sure you have the correct date on your calendar for the next PPCC meeting: Sunday, October 21 at 9:00 am at Golden Corral. -Paul Manifold Tech Tip From 1976 Here s a way to salvage otherwise broken exhaust manifolds. If the studs break off in the manifold, I d recommend drilling and tapping them for a stud or bolt. If the ears of the manifold are broken off, this presents a problem that only a new manifold will cure and the cure is expensive! I ve used a cheaper quicker and permanent fix with great success. All you need is a 2 1/4 muffler clamp and two 5/16 x2 (or thereabouts) eye bolts. Put the eye of the bolt through the clamp, then secure it to the broken end of the manifold. This will give you two new bolts to connect to the exhaust pipe foe very little cost. Thanks, Larry Claypool Volume 36, Number 12 October 2012 Page 3

In a recent issue of Hemmings Classic Car magazine there is a very interesting story about an older gentlemen in upstate NY who owns a pattern shop and has been making high quality wooden patterns for foundries to cast into metal since 59 after his stint in the military. His work has included everything from Revolutionary War cannon barrels to structural parts for biplanes. At the age of 70 he is busier than ever. His orders come in from around the country and the nearest competitor is 250 miles away. A few years back he contacted five local high schools, looking for an apprentice. He is certified by the state so the apprentice could earn credit and receive a wage. The only criteria were that the applicant be clean, sober and have a car. He didn t get a single response! 7 The DRIPLINE New Member Application The, Inc., (PPCC) was formed in September of 1977 by a group of enthusiasts from the Pikes Peak Region to preserve the Corvair automobile & related artifacts. Ownership of a Corvair is not required for membership. PPCC is a chartered chapter of CORVAIR SOCIETY OF AMERICA (CORSA). Mailing address is:, PO Box 15034, Colorado Springs, CO The purpose of PPCC is to drive your Corvair on tours, car shows, parades, plus attend technical sessions & social events: all geared toward the enjoyment of the CORVAIR automobile. Monthly meetings are held on the 2nd Sunday of each month at 9:00 a.m. in the meeting room of Golden Corral at 5410 E. Woodmen Rd. west of Powers (north side). Joining PPCC is important whether you are just beginning to restore your CORVAIR (the parts & technical sources are invaluable), or if you have a finished vehicle, are ready to drive & have fun. Dues for the PPCC are $25.00 per year. It is a requirement to belong to CORSA. If you are not a member, you must remit $45.00, either to CORSA or include with your PPCC dues for a total of $ The CORSA dues will be forwarded to the CORSA home office. This is a family membership (which includes your spouse & all children under 18 years of age). The dues include monthly newsletters: THE DRIPLINE & THE COMMUNIQUE (award winning magazine of CORSA). 9 The DRIPLINE Sometimes thanks is not enough! I ve had Corvairs for 16 years off and on. For most of those years, I ve deluded myself that I restored them myself. The truth is that if it weren't for the generosity of time, talent and car parts from Corvair club members, none of my cars would gotten on the road. My first Corvair was purchased in New Mexico. I knew less than nothing about Corvairs, but their club members patiently explained or showed what needed to be done to make a Corvair dependable. In 2005, I bought a 1962 Corvair in Albuqerque and joined PPCC. Thanks to the help of friends like Steve Goodman, Jon Andersen problem with the driver: My left leg decided it didn't like working a clutch. Garrie Fox found a 1963 Monza sedan with a 102 hp engine and Powerglide transmission. LET S HEAR IT FOR THE MARINES! The car still isn t running, but I owe a great debt of gratitude to both Wayne Russert (steering gear), Mike Wiltrout (steering wheel, rear grille) and Garrie Fox. Especially Garrie Fox. As I said, the car isn t running, but it s getting close. Garrie has already given up at least 16 hours of his valuable personal time to run diagnostics, replace fuel pump, check timing, electrics and generally eliminate everything down to the carbs. Our car had made it to a mechanic, but wouldn t make it home without a tow so it took up residence at his garage. I needed carbs fast and I figured Steve Goodman was too busy to do a job on short notice. I bought them 16 days ago from a brand x Corvair carburetor rebuilder on the indication that I would have them in three days. It took 9 days and one was defective. Seven more days later I m still waiting for a replacement. But, hope springs eternal! An old, blind Marine Gunnery Sergeant wanders into an All-Girl Biker Bar. He finds his way to a bar stool and orders a shot of Jack Daniels. After sitting there for a while, he yells to the bartender, 'Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?' The bar immediately falls absolutely silent. In a very deep, husky voice, the woman next to him says, 'Before you tell that joke, Marine, I think it is only fair --, given you're blind -- that you should know five things: 1. The bartender is a blonde girl with a baseball bat. 2. The bouncer is a blonde girl with a 'BillyClub'. 3. I'm a 6-foot tall, 175-pound blonde woman with a black belt in karate. 4. The woman sitting next to me is blonde and a professional weight lifter. 5. The lady to your right is blonde and a professional wrestler. 'Now, think about it seriously, Marine... Do you still wan'na tell that blonde joke?'
