3 Report From PPCC President Patricia Fox Our last meeting revealed that meeting location changes are necessary. Paul has taken a poll of members as to what would be the best time & location for our monthly meetings. It appears that going back to the Golden Corral at Woodmen Rd. works for the majority of those who responded. Our next meeting will be July 15 9a.m. Should our attendance go up, we should be able to keep this location. We appreciate your input and suggestions whether by poll response, verbal input at meetings, or by direct . It is You, The Members, who drive our club. Be sure to check the calendar on the monthly Dripline for upcoming events. Paul continuously gathers information keeping us posted on locations to gather as a group. Please share your Corvair Projects, Pictures and Experiences with DRIPLINE Editor Paul Campbell. Garrie is eagerly upgrading the Crown V8 cooling system for a trip July High Plains Raceway (Race Against Children s Cancer). (His parts have not arrived yet.) We are also planning on attending the RMC Picnic on Sunday, August 19 - Dale Wilshire Memorial Picnic at Castlewood Canyon State Park, Shelter #1; 11:00 am. This location is quite close to PPCC members as it is just a few great cruising miles up Hwy 83 and left into the park. We have joined RMC for a picnic/ cookout at this location in past years and it should be enjoyable again! As this letter is being written, it has begun to rain. In the past week, the whole community has experienced a horrible event; The Waldo Canyon Fire was 100% contained as of today, July 4, We are watching the World Arena gathering Community Rises and have pondered the power of nature. Colorado Springs lost many homes and landmarks. Our first responders are brave & amazing! There are not enough ways to say Thank You. Please save a time slot for our next meeting on July 15 th! Drive your Corvair! Helpful Tips For better sleep on a hot night: Fill a sock with ricechill & then put under your pillow. Dawn Detergent & a tooth brush to clean your jewelry. Gnats? Indoor plants! Mix small amount of rubbing alcohol with water weekly; it will not harm the plant, but gnats will be gone. Skunks- Spread mothballs in yard-they will visit neighbors first. 4 Race Against Kids Cancer The Rocky Mountain CORSA and Pikes Peak Corvair clubs have been invited to display their cars at the High Plains Raceway (HPR) on July 21 and July 22. There will be separate parking for Club cars. The Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing (RMVR) club is the host and there will be a full weekend of Vintage Car Racing. Our clubs will be able to do Parade laps (with a slow pace car) for free. RMVR is also asking that we take another parade Session with a "donor paid" passenger. RMVR is planning on selling "Parade Lap Ride" tickets and asking the club cars to help us provide those rides. There is no entry or entrance fee per se. However, RMVR is asking everyone coming in the gate to make a small (or large, if you will) Morgan Adams Foundation (MAF) contribution. A $5 per car kind of thing. But the showing of the cars and participating in the parade session is free. There are Parade Sessions on both Sat. and Sun afternoons. Interested parties need to provide Larry Schubert with a head/car count at the May meeting (or larry@schuberts.com) so he can provide the information to the RMVR staff. Details of the event can be found at: HPR is located 17 miles east of Byers on Hwy 36 and driving time is between 1 and 1 ½ hours from Castle Rock Corvair Monza Convertible 56,645 miles New Top, New Boot, New Tires, 2 Brand new K&H air filters, Chilton Corvair Manual, Corvair Jacket (large), Blaupunkt CD/AM/FM Stereo w/ detachable faceplate. 6 Don t forget to take care of those brakes! Submitted by Garrie Fox After reading a spate of Corvair brake related issues in other newsletters and the latest Corsa Communique, I want to share a probably needless project. It was needless if I had paid proper attention to the brakes. Typically, I had topped off the '69 Corvair's dual master cylinder front fluid reservoir and did not realize how frequently. In moving the car out of the garage, I pushed the brake pedal normally when it was in about the desired location on the driveway. Pedal to the floor caused immediate concern! The dual circuit did stop the car with considerable additional pressure. I checked the master cylinder and noted that the forward compartment was basically empty. Over the next few days I drove the Rampside, until it was convenient to read up on the brake system and hopefully find which circuit was served by that forward compartment fluid. I found no reference in the related manuals and was fortunate to talk with Steve Goodman who knew the answer; it served the rear brake circuit. This information allowed me to start with the two rear brakes in looking for the problem. Of course, having two possibilities, I pulled the right tire and drum; perfectly dry and functioning properly. Onto the the left rear; Bingo! The wheel cylinder had failed, leaking significantly into the brake shoes and drum. I did make two calls and found that, indeed, NAPA and one other local parts store had the left rear brake cylinder; only $30. We can prolong our brake systems by doing the recommended brake system fluid renewal, emptying the master cylinder of old fluid, filling it with fresh fluid and bleeding all four brakes in proper sequence to remove all old fluid. I am one of those people who keeps a logbook on every vehicle and I would be embarrassed to divulge how long ago it showed this Corvair had a new master cylinder, along with front brakes, but no service to the rear brakes. Stopping is now back into my priorities! The Culprit! Cleaned Up! All Done! Volume 36, Number 9 July 2012 Page 6

7 CORRECTION Last month s cover referred to Tarmo Sutt s 1965 Corvair. The car is really a 1966 Corvair convertible. Thanks Jim Pitmman of Albuquerque for straightening me out. Summer Picnic Sunday, Aug 19 Castlewood Canyon State Park (Just East of Castle Rock) Hosted by rocky mountain corsa Beautiful place, plenty of free parking. For more information call Paul Seyforth Bring a dish to pass RMC will provide the drinks and burgers Regarding 1965 Corvair Convertible advertised on page 4 I saw and drove it last week on my way back from Chicago. 9 Minutes of Meeting of June 20, 2012 Patricia Fox opened the meeting at 6:48. Seven members were present. Garrie Fox moved that the minutes of the last meeting be accepted as printed. Randy Karl seconded the motion. John Koll reported we have approximately $2940 in the treasury. Patricia asked for ideas to improve attendance. Should we move the meeting? Change the day, time and/or venue? It was decided that Paul Campbell would send an to ask the membership if they wanted to move back to a Sunday brunch at the Golden Corral. Paul asked if we had an ad rate for anyone who wants to use the Dripline to sell their Corvair. He will look into what the Denver club charges. Tri-State 2013: There are two new paved roads from Cripple Creek to Victor. We ll be checking on mine tours and possibly a radio remote broadcast. Randy Karl volunteered to organize the Fall Tour. The possibility of a picnic and a Christmas Party will be decided at a later date. Meeting adjourned at 7:35.
