BRMSTIK BABBLE! President Report July, 2018 Keith Wellfare and I went to a very interesting Motorcycle Road Safety Forum and there will be a few changes made regarding new motorcycle riders. There were also a number of safety issues discussed but as always not enough time to go in-depth. I can only assume the other issues will be discussed in the future at another forum. It s great to see the broad spectrum of riders, instructors and government departments and motorcycle clubs who assist with gathering the necessary information and how they decide what laws pass and what doesn t and the reasons behind their decisions. There is a Consultation Paper survey on the Road Safety site rsc.wa.gov.au/motorcycle-safety-survey that you may read and give your comments by filling out the survey. This will be available 23 rd June to the 23 rd July only. Now to other matters: as you would have noticed by our s last month we, the President and committee have been working on a solution to three wheelers marking corners. As everyone s safety is paramount this led to the statement I made in the Waffle. I would like to thank the individual members who understood the statement and commented with helpful suggestions on what they thought of the subject: 2 nd man marking on three wheelers. The July committee meeting has been a very informative meeting with selected invited guests and the summary of the information collected from other state branches and further afield on a National level. This information was used to formulate the guidelines I sent out earlier this week. Also, if you don t let me know that you are not receiving the Waffle or any of the s I send out, then how can I fix the problem? Now let s move onwards and upwards in a positive direction! We shall see you out there somewhere on our great rides and events ahead, so meanwhile: Always take care, be aware and be kind to each other. Cheers, Julie Wilcox #35151 President Warnbro Sound Wanderers Ulysses Club Inc Secretary Report July 2018 Hi everyone, The last bit about Vietnam in this edition. We had a great time, & learned a lot about the country & their people. Also a story about the Carnarvon Rally. We have had a few s back from people who said they really enjoyed the rally, and are looking forward to next year in Shark Bay. It s great to see the National Committee, and our own branch committee & members supporting Julie lately. I think most people realise her comments in the waffle were in the interest of keeping all branch members safe on our rides. Hope to see you on a ride soon, Chris. 4 SOUTH VIETNAM - CRAZY CORNERS AND CROOKED COPS Part 3. We rode to the guesthouse in Mui Ne we were booked into, which was definitely a step down from the 4 and 5 star hotels we had been staying in, but it was the only accommodation we could find because it was a 4 day long weekend to commemorate the fall of Saigon in 1975, so most of the millions of people in the big cities had headed to the coast. The harbour was spectacular, with hundreds of brightly coloured boats anchored in the water, and round bamboo dinghies lining the shore. There area is famous for its seafood, and the local markets had a huge selection of shellfish, crabs, crayfish and fish of all sizes and colours. The restaurants also had tanks and tubs of fish on display, and we enjoyed a delicious dinner just a short walk from our guesthouse. We made the ride from Mui Ne to Ho Chi Min city in very busy traffic, and were constantly on the lookout for police after yesterdays run in. As we approached the city I saw a man with his wife and kids under a beach umbrella in the middle of the freeway, very strange place for a picnic I thought. As a group of bikes rode past he lifted a very old looking speed gun, and pointed it at the departing bikes. He then radioed ahead to a group of police waiting a few hundred metres down the road, who pulled the bikes over. We crawled past, but I saw one policeman step out in front of Keith and wave him in. we waited down the road, and Keith pulled in shortly after and told us he had been fined 1 million dong for having the incorrect license (Vietnam doesn t recognise Australia s international licenses, so you need to apply in Ho Chi Min, and two days later turn up for a practical assessment. If you pass this license is only good in the Ho Chi Min province). Needless to say, not many Aussies bother to get the license, which the local police know and use to supplement their income. Alliance insurance however assured me that as long as you have an international license, and an Australian license for the bike you are riding, you are covered if you have their insurance for that sized bike. I would check this yourself, and never travel overseas without the correct travel insurance for the activities you intend to undertake. If you ve got it flaunt it! EELS OR FROGS FOR TEA? Page 4

SOUTH VIETNAM - CRAZY CORNERS AND CROOKED COPS Our final excursion on the bikes was an overnighter down to Can Tho, to visit the floating markets. As we made our way out of Ho Chi Min, we were met by a steady stream (actually it was more of a deluge) of motorcycles coming back to the city after the long weekend. For five hours they were five wide for most of the 5 hours we travelled that day. At times the police stopped cars trucks and buses just to keep the bikes moving, although most would rarely exceed 20 kilometres an hour for most of the day. Thank god we were heading the other way! At least we averaged 40 kilometres an hour, and at one time reached the stunning speed of 76 kilometres an hour. Can Tho was a very nice city with waterways through the city and bridges decorated with hundreds of lights. We arrived in the city on a ferry, so got to see the many barges and other water craft that use the delta as a means of transport for all manner of goods. The bikes had their second oil change for the trip (they started rattling after 1500 kilometres), so it gave us time to wander around the streets, and Keith and Jo to have a look at a wedding shop (Keith told us it was Jo s daughter). Next morning we were off in a hire boat to check out the floating markets. The local farmers load their produce onto large boats, that head to Can Tho and anchor in the river. Smaller craft the cruise up to the boats and buy produce for restaurants, hotels and market stalls throughout the city. The sellers hang a sample of their wares from a cane pole attached to the boats cabin, so there is an array of pineapples, sweet potatoes, and even crabs swaying back and forth as the boats rock in the waves on the river. Other smaller boats are selling tea, coffee, fresh mango and pineapples from their craft, both to local boats and tourists alike. The boat dropped us back at the jetty, and after loading up the bikes we were soon back in the nightmare of traffic heading into Ho Chi Min. Page 5

SOUTH VIETNAM - CRAZY CORNERS AND CROOKED COPS Riding through traffic like this is exhausting. You have to be constantly watching in all directions. In front you have buses trucks and cars coming towards you in your lane as they overtake slower vehicles. The lanes don t belong to anyone, whoever needs to use them does, and if you have a truck or bus, you always have the right of way. Behind you is more of the same, with motorists big and small moving into bike lanes to turn two lanes into three. A blast on a very loud air horn gives you a warning that a truck or bus is about to push you over to the verge as they race to get past the other traffic. Then you have merging traffic entering from the roadside or side roads. This is done by slowly moving into the lane without making eye contact with the approaching drivers. By entering slowly, it gives you time to squeeze past, or brake and pull in behind the entering vehicle. The same approach is used at roundabouts, except vehicles enter from all angles. One thing I find amazing is that all of this is done without any aggression or road rage. The use of the horn is only to let other drivers you are there, or coming past. The most unnerving procedure is something we all take for granted. Crossing the road. This is done by simply stepping off the kerb and walking at a steady pace across the road. This is also done with no eye contact to the approaching drivers, you have to have complete faith in the drivers skill in judging your speed and distance. Changing your pace, or stopping is suicidal. As the vehicles are normally travelling at around 20 kilometres an hour, it is fairly easy for them to avoid you. I usually tried to cross with the locals, and Jo actually had one young girl help her cross the road, like the Boy Scouts used to in the good old days.we chose a hotel close to the airport for our last night, to maximise sleeping time. After checking in, we returned our bikes to Patrick, and took a cab back to the hotel, where we sat in the rooftop pool and watched the planes taking off and landing. If you don t like the way I ride stay off the footpath Page 6

SOUTH VIETNAM - CRAZY CORNERS AND CROOKED COPS We had a great holiday, with magnificent riding roads in the mountains, stunning waterfalls, amazing mountain views and beautiful coastline. One thing I would do differently, is spend two days in towns with tourist attractions. We thought by only travelling two or three hundred kilometres a day we would have time to look around. We now know this takes at least five or six hours to travel this far in Vietnam, and you are completely stuffed at the end of the day. It is quite often not practical to do less kilometres in a day, because there is not always decent accommodation between stops, especially in the mountains. Also the road down the coast was often through small towns and large cities, making the riding slow and boring. We managed to stick to our original 3,300 kilometre route and covered nearly all of South Vietnam, but we had some long days riding. We had a few close calls, but the drivers in Vietnam were very tolerant, and quite skilful. Once we got the hang of the road rules I think we did quite well, and all had a great time. We all look forward to returning to ride North Vietnam in the near future. Chris, Dianna, Jo & Keith. Sometimes a sore arse needs two chairs! Page 7

Old Coast Brewery Ride Sunday, 17 th June: Wow, what a perfect weathered day. Good numbers rocked up even a couple of old faces arriving in time to set off down the road. Taking the scenic route through Hopeland Rd seeing all the baby calves, lambs and foals frolicking and the ducks swimming around in great puddles on the farms. Mother Nature really turned it on for us. The roads were pretty quiet as we headed up the hill into Dwellingup for a warm bevvie, a scone and a chat. Janet won a bottle of wine and Pauline had a go at Jag the Joker. Looks like there ll be more $ s in the kitty for next time. West Coast Motor Cycle gear shop is closing down and they must sell their stock. It has all been heavily reduced and the doors will close 4 th July. If you need any gear, head up to Dwellingup and have a look around. A few of the riders headed back home from here while the majority went on down Nanga Brook Rd through to Waroona and once again had a short stop in case anyone needed fuel. Left Waroona and continued along the Hwy to Harvey. Derek overshot the turn off for the Brewery but not to worry we can all do U-turns, and we arrived to a most welcoming venue. Table booked, lunch ordered, great company, stories to tell all with beautiful sunshine. Mandurah Murray Branch was there along with the Vintage car club and groups of families. Headed back along the Forrest Hwy and turned onto the Old Coast Rd for a change and we rode home. It was a really great day out and the ride was enjoyed by all. Thanks to everyone who came to share it with us. Page 8

CARNARVON RALLY 2018 We had a great turnout for this years Rally with 53 registering for the event. Rod & Judy came all the way from Tasmania and joined WA members from all over the state. We were very lucky with the weather with temps in the high 20 s/low 30 s and warm nights making a welcome change from the cold weather in Perth. The caravan park suggested the Yacht Club for dinner on Friday night so around 30 of us turned up to out number the locals The very limited menu (chilli-con-carne or nothing) was not to everyone s taste/ liking, but those that stayed enjoyed a huge plate of delicious chilli that was mild enough to suit everyone s palate. It was a delightful setting as we watched the sun set behind the yachts in the Facine. The Yacht Club staff were very appreciative of us being there as they have been struggling lately to raise money to dredge the inlet since the gov t cut the funding to this project. 10 Saturday morning we were up early to feed the hungry hoards and then Peter from Geraldton led us out to Gascoyne Junction for lunch. On the way Dianna & I decided to try the road to Rocky Pool even though it was muddy from recent rains. Jeff & Di from Armadale followed us and we were all glad we took the risk as we were met with the stunning pool surrounded by red pindan soil and contrasting rocks, all framed by eucalypts that were twisted and bent from years of enduring raging floodwaters. ROCKY POOL Page 10

On the ride out Jeff s front wheel dug into the soft sand as he turned slightly, tipping his bike gently onto it s side. Luckily we were only going slow. Di helped him get it upright and we continued on our way. We cruised along through the lovely wide road with sweeping corners, towards Gascoyne Junction, occasionally slowing to allow cows to cross the road. We arrived at the junction and were surprised to find a modern complex with hotel, fuel, general store and caravan park. Apparently the old hotel was washed away a few years back when the Gascoyne River flooded. The new hotel was built on a new site, hopefully on higher ground. That night the caravan park organised and entertainer for us. Outback Paddy kept us entertained while we cooked our bbq and ate dinner. Page 11

Next morning we headed off on a ride to the Blowholes and luckily there were a few good sized waves that gave some high water spouts. Dianna was amused to see a group of burly bikers enthralled at throwing pieces of bread into the water to feed the reef fish. On the way back to town we stopped off at the 1mile Jetty Café for some lunch and a few Ulysseans took a short helicopter ride down the coast and over the town. Dinner that night finished earlier with people drifting off to watch the MotoGP and others heading to bed hoping to get a early start on the ride home to miss the forecast rain. Thanks to everyone that helped this year. It gave Dianna & I a chance to enjoy the weekend without working too hard. Page 12

SOME OF THIS MONTHS RIDES ARMADALE MAY BREAKFAST MACCAS CLUB AT OAKOVER GROUNDS COOGEE DOME RIDE 23 JUNE 2018 SOCIAL MEETING RAFFLE We were lucky enough to win the first raffle meat prize at the WSW 12 June Social meeting. We would like to congratulate the person that came up with the great idea and the butcher RJ s in Baldivis, who also supplies the Port Kennedy RSL for their raffles. Thank you for supplying such a great selection of meats and in particular the tender pork steaks. It was a great idea and we hope it will be repeated in the future so we will have the opportunity to try and win another meat pack, we will keep trying. Jim & Glen Beautiful sunny morning with 9 riders at the start including one trike and one Can-am. Brian Wier gave us a send off. The ride went smoothly until we reached Hillman when Brian took to the back streets and a sightseeing tour and found us three dead end, no through roads for us to practice our U turns. When we arrived at Coogee we squeezed into the remaining parking bays and were met by the chap that has the yellow trike. When we were settled a woman was trying to attract our attention by letting her dog get off the lead twice, enabling us to give constructive advice. As most of us were married and committed mere males, even though we understood how we could attract the attention of women being masculine and good looking males ( and modest too ), we avoided the temptation. After the usual solving of political and religious problems we disbursed and went our own ways home to complete a very pleasant mornings ride. Thanks again Brian for a great mornings ride. Jim Casserole night at Julie & Derek s Page 13

WAYNES NEW BIKE! I raced a Harley today and after some really hard riding I managed to PASS the guy. I was riding on one of those really, really twisting sections of Nanga road with no straight sections to speak of and where most of the bends have warning signs that say "MAX SPEED 80 KPH".I knew if I was going to pass one of those monsters with those big-cubic-inch motors, it would have to be a place like this where handling and rider skill are more important than horsepower alone. I saw the guy up ahead as I exited one of the turns and knew I could catch him, but it wouldn't be easy. I concentrated on my braking and cornering. Three corners later, I was on his mudguard. Catching him was one thing; passing him would prove to be another. Two corners later, I pulled up next to him as we sailed down the hill. I think he was shocked to see me next to him, as I nearly got by him before he could recover. Next corner, same thing. I'd manage to pull up next to him as we started to enter the corners but when we came out he'd get on the throttle and out-power me. His horsepower was almost too much to overcome, but this only made me more determined than ever. My only hope was to out-brake him. I held off squeezing the lever until the last instant. I kept my nerve while he lost his. In an instant I was by him. Corner after corner, I could hear the roar of his engine as he struggled to keep up. Three more miles to go before the road straightens out and he would pass me for good. But now I was in the lead and he would no longer hold me back. I stretched out my lead and by the time we reached Waroona, he was more than a full corner behind. I could no longer see him in my rear-view mirror. Once the road did straighten out, it seemed like it took miles before he passed me, but it was probably just a few hundred metres. I was no match for that kind of horsepower, but it was done. In the tightest section of road, where bravery and skill count for more than horsepower and deep pockets, I had passed him. Though it was not easy, I had won the race to the bottom of the hill and I had preserved the proud tradition of one of the best bits of British iron. I will always remember that moment. I don't think I've ever pedalled so hard in my life. And, some of the credit must go to Raleigh cycles, as well. They really make a great bicycle... 15 JIMS JOKES No fury like. A married couple were driving along the motorway at 50kmh when the husband turned to his wife in the driver s seat and said I want a divorce. The wife said nothing but put her foot down and accelerated to 75kmh. I know we ve been married for 20 years, he continued, but it s time to call it quits. I ve been having an affair with your best friend, and she s prettier and a much better in bed than you. Again, the woman said nothing but accelerated to 100kmh. I ve hired a great lawyer and he assures me I ll get to keep the house, the boat and this car, he said with a smile. But I m a fair man. So.what do you want? The woman accelerated to 120kmh and replied, Oh no darling, I ve got everything I need already. Really? asked her husband. And what would that be? She veered toward a bridge pylon and snarled, An airbag! Truck wreck The driver of a huge trailer lost control of his rig, crashed into an empty tollbooth and smashed it to pieces. He climbed out of the wreckage and within a matter of minutes a truck pulled up and discharged a crew of workers. The men picked up each broken piece of the former tollbooth and spread some kind of creamy substance on it, then fitted the pieces together. In less than 30 minutes, they had the entire tollbooth reconstructed and looking good as new. Astonishing! the truck driver said to the crew chief. But what was the white stuff you used to put all the pieces together? Oh, the crew chief said, That was tollgate booth paste. First day at the new job A country lad moved to Sydney and went to a big department store looking for a job. After the usual grilling from the HR manager he got it. His first day was rough but he struggled through. After the store closed, the manager asked, How many sales did you make? One, answered the kid. Just one? the manager groaned. Our sales people average sales a day. How much was the sale for? $101,237.64, the lad replied. stuff me drunk! the manager exclaimed. What the hell did you sell? Well, the young fella explained, first I sold this fella a small fishing hook, then a new fishing rod. I asked him where he was going fishing and he said at a beach down the coast. I told him if he wanted to go down the coast he d need a boat, so I took him to the boating department and sold him a twin-engine pleasure cruiser. That s amazing! said the manager. What happened next? The fella told me he didn t think his car could pull the boat, so I took him to the vehicle department and convinced him to buy a Commodore V8. You mean a guy came in here to buy a fishing hook and you sold him a boat and car? the manager exclaimed. Nah, the kid drawled. He came in here to buy a box of tampons for his wife and I said, Well, since your weekend s stuffed, you might as well go fishing. DEATH BED Ken was on his death bed when he gasped to his wife, Promise to fulfil my last request. Well, that depends, Ken, she replied in usual rude fashion. Six months after I die, Ken continued, I want you to marry Tim. I thought you hated Tim, she frowned. With his last breath, Ken said, I do. Page 15

JIMS JOKES Moon A teacher was talking to her class about marriage. She asked, What kind of wife would you like, Johnny? The little fella said, I want a wife who s like the moon. So you want her to be beautiful and mysterious? the teacher asked. Johnny said No, I want her to arrive at night and piss off in the morning. Cyber bullying Research shows Amish people have much lower rates of cyber bullying. Potatoes Two Amish women were digging up potatoes. One pulled up two huge spuds and said to her mate, These remind me of my husband s balls. Really? said the other one. Your husband s balls are that big? No, the first one replied, they re that dirty. Education I think the education system is great just the way it is. There s kids in my neighbourhood in Los Angeles, seven years old, that can already speak fluent Spanish. Kiwi Bro What do you say to a Kiwi bloke with a beautiful woman on his arm? Hey, nice tattoo! Greek & Italian A Greek and an Italian were arguing passionately about which culture had contributed more to the world. The Greek boasted, We have the Parthenon. Well we have the Colosseum, retorted the Italian. We we created mathematics, sneered the Greek. And we built the Roman Empire, replied the Italian angrily. Ha! We invented sex, announced the Greek triumphantly. That s true, agreed the Italian, but we introduced it to women. Marathon man I was asked to run a marathon and I said, No way. But when they said it was for handicapped kids, I thought, Hey, I could actually win that. Pray What s the difference between praying in church and praying in a casino? When you re in a casino, you really mean it. Taxi! My husband and i were dressed and ready to go out for a lovely evening of dinner and theatre. Having been burgled in the past, we turned on a 'night light' and the answering machine, then put the cat in the backyard. When our cab arrived, we walked out our front door and our rather tubby cat scooted between our legs inside, then ran up the stairs. Because our cat likes to chase our budgie we really didn't want to leave them unchaperoned so my husband ran inside to retrieve her and put her in the back yard again. Because i didn't want the taxi driver to know our house was going to be empty all evening, i explained to him that my husband would be out momentarily as he was just bidding goodnight to my mother. A few minutes later he got into the cab all hot and bothered, and said (to my growing horror and amusement) as the cab pulled away. "Sorry it took so long but the stupid bitch was hiding under the bed and i had to poke her arse with a coat hanger to get her to come out! She tried to take off so i grabbed her by the neck and wrapped her in a blanket so she wouldn't scratch me like she did last time. But it worked! I hauled her fat arse down the stairs and threw her into the backyard...she had better not shit in the vegetable garden again." The silence in the taxi was deafening... Page 16
