Text for Cook Historical Marker Benajah Cook Sawmill and Farmstead The Benajah Cook family arrived in this area when the land was totally forested. Benajah purchased 4000 acres at a sheriff s auction on June 12, 1807 and selected 500 acres along Duncan Run Creek for his family farm and the location of his sawmill. These early settlers transformed the dense forest into farmland and created a life of sustainable living through hard work, dedication and a clear vision of the future. The mill race visible along the north side of Duncan Run near the Gorsuch Road bridge is the last vestige of the sawmill operated by Benajah on his farmstead. Upstream from the millrace there are traces of the foundation for a dam, most likely a wooden weir, constructed across Duncan Run. Logs were floated down Duncan Run at times of high water to be stored in the mill pond, sorted, and moved single file along the mill race. The water flowing along the mill race facilitated the orderly movement of the logs and powered the mill wheel that drove the vertical up and down motion of the saw. Benajah Cook and other families who settled in the newly formed Harlem Township in the early 19 th century are remembered and recognized for the hard work and dedication that created productive farmland. The pioneering spirit of these early farming families of Harlem Township is embodied in the traces they left behind and celebrated by today township s residents.

Funding for Marker Current balance in Savings Account $1, Cost of Ohio Historical Marker $2, Funds Needed $1,065.52

Military Flagholders for Veteran Graves Diana R. and Judy K. place a War of 1812 marker on the grave of John Searfoss in Fancher Cemetery. Mr. Searfoss s descendant, Jo Barginear in Houston, Texas was so thrilled to discover we had placed a marker on his grave that she donated $ to our Harlem Township fund. Mr. Searfoss actually lived in Plain Township, near Harlem Road and Walnut Street, but was buried in Harlem Township.

CIVIL WAR MEMORIES This 98 page booklet came about because a former resident of this area had seventy-three letters written home to Center Village by boys fighting for the Union. The booklet also contains excerpts from the diary of Sgt. Charles W. Durling who was in the group that chased Morgan, a write up on the Fighting Chaplain of the 32 nd OVI (from Center Village), and pages on those we lost and the involvement of local families in the war plus more. Cost $10.00

Harlem Cemetery Clean Up - James Betty working on two different stones

Eliza Budd Joni spent a lot of time working on the Eliza Budd stone. It was amazing how beautiful and colorful it was when clean.

George W. Budd Civil War Veteran George W. Budd s stone. Working on the stone spread the lichen yellow color. Bottom, Vicki working with soft brush.

Center Village Cemetery Renovation Work When the WPA mapped Center Village Cemetery in 1935, they recorded 173 graves. When we read the cemetery in 2010, we found only about 100 graves and many empty pediments, downed stones, and broken stones and footstones placed in piles under trees and around the cemetery edges.

Peter C. Carr There was no intention to begin work on Center Village Cemetery this year, but internet contacts made for the Civil War Memories book led to contact by Patti Stafford in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, whose 3 rd Great-Grandfather, Peter C. Carr, and wife Pelia Ann Hartrum Carr were buried in Center Village Cemetery in now lost graves. Patti donated $ to help with our projects with a request that we try to find her grandparents. So far, we ve been unsuccessful. Peter & Pelia Carr s son Asa s stone left; their nephew Will Hartrum s flag right

War of 1812 Veteran Adam Piper War of 1812 veteran, Adam Piper s stone is missing a critical piece. In trying to find it, we unearthed the original stone for Civil War veteran David Clark, in two pieces, buried several inches down.

Hannah Roberts Hannah Roberts was the wife of Beers Roberts who donated Center Village Cemetery to the township. At first glance it appeared there were two stones mixed together at her burial site. It turned out to be one large one very repairable. The bottom of her stone is signed by D. Bennet

Obelisk The obelisk monument was in three pieces in three different places in the cemetery and unreadable even using various computer techniques like a negative image. But, by using flour to fill the letters in the stone it was possible to read: Hannah E.; dau of WT & LE; SMETHERS; DIED APR; 25, The marble obelisk had been mounted to a pediment with an iron spike. Location of the pediment is not yet certain.

Dora Marriott Someone paid extra to have a decorative edging made for the grave of Dora Marriott, but over the years it disappeared into the ground. Even worse, her stone was misplaced on the granite pediment for her Mother s stone which had fallen off. Her unusual grave is now almost back the way it originally was.

Omer Simpson Poor little Omer Simpson died in 1857 at the age of 2 months. Then his stone was broken and the top part with his name put under the tree fifty feet away from the broken off base and pediment of his stone. The pediment and broken base were dug up and the top part placed with them. His stone is now waiting repair over the winter.

To Do Center Village so much more to do! The two large pieces go together. They re broken through the eagle design and the top is missing. No name. Military? Or? Where are the missing graves? Figuring out how they go together Large pediment buried behind two stones. Why? The unmatched broken pieces.

Cemetery Entrance Markers Proof for Harlem Donated stones with mounted bronze plaques to be mounted at the entrance to each cemetery. Cost app. $1,650, $850 donated.

Historic Homes Inventory In the mid-1990 s, a survey was made of the old homes and buildings in Delaware County, but all the local information is contained in one book. The objective of this project is to develop more historical information on the houses and other structures existing in Harlem Township for a permanent record and so residents know more about the township origins.

Historic Homes Inventory For the house pictured on the prior page 6. When was the building first constructed, year? Possibly 1815, definitely by 1836 based on the selling prices 7. Who was the original builder or owner? Mann, June 24, 1905; to the Federal Land Bank of Louisville, Oct. 9, 1923; to Anna M. Droke, June 30, 1931; to Marguerite C. Redfern, June 3, 1932: to Clinton H. Dell, 1992 (estate).

Who s Who in Harlem Township, 20th century The Delaware County History published in 1880 contained stories and biographical sketches of the settlers and those who came shortly after. In 1910 a county directory was published with additional sketches of 19th century residents Nothing has been done since 1910, which means we ve missed recording information about people in the community in the 20th century those we knew and who were instrumental in the development of our community when we were kids.
