Investigative Report #2 Old Montauk Highway May 18, 1999 Our second trip to the Camp Hero Area took place on Saturday, May 18, 1999.

We would meet up with them in 2 hours at the lighthouse parking lot. We walked past the gate into the Camp Hero Fishing Area as pedestrian access is unrestricted.

Investigative Report #2 Old Montauk Highway May 18, 1999 Our second trip to the Camp Hero Area took place on Saturday, May 18, It was our intention on this day to just connect some of the dots on the map we were making. We had someone drive us to the Camp Hero Fishing Area. We would meet up with them in 2 hours at the lighthouse parking lot. We walked past the gate into the Camp Hero Fishing Area as pedestrian access is unrestricted. The road at this point heads in a southerly direction. After proceeding a short distance down the road, there are 3 dirt roads on the east side. Each road had a sign posted in the middle of it that read 'TRAIL CLOSED: ENVIRONMENTALLY FRAGILE AREA' (b). One must wonder if this area is actually environmentally fragile or someone just doesn't want anyone snooping around in this area. A short distance down one of these roads is a very tall utility pole (I would estimate it to be 90-foot) with a strange configuration at the top of it (c). This was especially curious to me because I work in the telecommunications field and on poles on a fairly regular basis. And this was unfamiliar to me. One must wonder if this is some sort of electromagnetic field generating antenna similar to a Delta-T antenna. I have talked to a lineman of an electric company and showed him the photo of the pole. He was unable to identify the device either. A barbed-wire fence with warnings of high-voltage surrounds the base of the pole. Very near the pole is a structure of some sort. We would get a closer look at this at a later time. (b) (c) Continuing south along the road (which is Old Montauk Highway by the way) we came across an asphalt road leading West. There was an old 'DO NOT ENTER' sign posted at this road. We 1

decided that we would continue along Old Montauk Highway at this time and check this road out later. A short distance from here, we came upon the parking lot for the Camp Hero Fishing Area.

Nothing seems strange about that considering that most of the roads in this area are bumpy dirt ones that you wouldn't want your car bottoming out on.

There were some people milling about by themselves in the lot. Some in groups of two and three. No one seemed particularly unusual except for one man.

2 decided that we would continue along Old Montauk Highway at this time and check this road out later. A short distance from here, we came upon the parking lot for the Camp Hero Fishing Area. The parking lot had several vehicles in it. Most of them were mobile homes and sport utility vehicles. Nothing seems strange about that considering that most of the roads in this area are bumpy dirt ones that you wouldn't want your car bottoming out on. I mention this because Peter Moon and Preston Nichols insist that there is something strange about the type of vehicles that are always in this parking lot. There were some people milling about by themselves in the lot. Some in groups of two and three. No one seemed particularly unusual except for one man. This one gentleman was standing alone near the front of a dark-colored Chevy Blazer and locked eyes on my companion and I as soon as we entered the lot. He was wearing dark glasses (again not unusual considering the beautiful sunny day) and stared at us for quite some time. He literally did not take his eyes off us for about 10 minutes. Just as his stare was getting uncomfortable, he turned his back and we snapped a photo of him. He was a strange presence. Looking West from the parking lot, you could see the massive SAGE radar dish in the distance. Even from here, it was quite impressive and quite spooky (b). actually easier to crawl under the growth. (b) We headed West out of the parking lot down Old Montauk Highway -- which becomes nothing more than a dirt road at this point. Along the road are signs posted with numbers on them obviously indicating the parking spots for the Camp Hero Fishing Area permit holders. Some of these spots were occupied by SUVs. A couple of young men walked past us carrying surfboards and seemed very friendly. A short walk and we came upon an asphalt road heading North. The road was obviously unused as it appeared decayed and quite overgrown. We proceeded up this road and found ourselves literally hacking our way through the brush at some points. In a couple of areas, it was Several places along the sides of the road was debris scattered including large drums and tanks of some sort. At one spot, there was a cable lying across the road. It was an old telephone cable that had been cut and was laying there still attached to it's supporting strand. It was obviously an aerial cable 2

at one time and -- judging from its appearance -- not very long ago. Further up the road on the left side was some sort of sewage/drainage system (b).

(b) We traveled further up the road until we came to the end. An East-West road met it. Just to the West was a locked gate that is an entrance to the inner parts of the base.

We decided to head down the road to the East and come back here some other time. Traveling East, we ended up back at Old Montauk Highway at the 'DO NOT ENTER' sign. We had connected some dots.

3 at one time and -- judging from its appearance -- not very long ago. Further up the road on the left side was some sort of sewage/drainage system (b). We were able to climb down into the wooden structure. But it was not possible to travel through it as it became too small in either direction. (b) We traveled further up the road until we came to the end. An East-West road met it. Just to the West was a locked gate that is an entrance to the inner parts of the base. The fence had the usual 'NO TRESPASSING, VIOLATORS WILL BE PROSECUTED' sign on it. It is possible to simply walk around this gate since there is no fence around it. We decided to head down the road to the East and come back here some other time. Traveling East, we ended up back at Old Montauk Highway at the 'DO NOT ENTER' sign. We had connected some dots. We traveled back to the parking lot where we found the man still near his SUV. He spied us again and would not remove his gaze from us the whole time we walked through the lot. Was this man a "lookout" of some sort? Was he making a mental picture of us for a later description to someone? Who knows? We again headed West out of the parking lot and past the overgrown asphalt road. A little further down Old Montauk Highway on the right side was an old decaying building. The structure -- which was not much more then a large shack -- was several feet off the road behind some growth. Pushing our way through the brush, we stepped into the structure. The inner walls were pretty well stripped away and covered with graffiti. In the southwest corner of the floor was a square hole in the floor. Looking down, one can see iron rungs embedded in the concrete wall to be used as a ladder going down. The room appeared to be about 10 feet deep with a couple of feet of stagnant water on the floor. We held the camera down the hole and took a picture (b). We will come back here at a later time to climb down and investigate more thoroughly because we are on a time limit this day. 3

Highway. Further down the road is a sign posted that reads 'NO VEHICLES BEYOND THIS POINT'. Past here there is an old pipe that cuts across the road.

The center of this circle may have been the location of one of the large 16-inch guns that were used for coastal defense in the past.

So we returned to Old Montauk A few more steps down the road revealed a collapsed fence on the right side that one could possibly walk over and into the base if one

A little further and we found a large old tank left on the right side of the road and perhaps what might have been a trail that is extremely overgrown.

Continuing along the road, we found another asphalt road on the left side that we decided not to follow because of the time constraint.

4 Highway. Further down the road is a sign posted that reads 'NO VEHICLES BEYOND THIS POINT'. Past here there is an old pipe that cuts across the road. A little further down on the left is an asphalt road. We followed this road which ended at a circular road. The center of this circle may have been the location of one of the large 16-inch guns that were used for coastal defense in the past. At one spot along this circle is a dirt trail that leads to the bluffs. Aside from the beautiful view from the bluff, there was nothing else of interest here. So we returned to Old Montauk A few more steps down the road revealed a collapsed fence on the right side that one could possibly walk over and into the base if one felt like fighting through the dense vegetation. On the left side of the road, we found an old boiler hatch cover. A little further and we found a large old tank left on the right side of the road and perhaps what might have been a trail that is extremely overgrown. On the left side of the road was a lot of old wood piled up. Continuing along the road, we found another asphalt road on the left side that we decided not to follow because of the time constraint. We traveled further down Old Montauk Highway and came to another gate into the base. The gate had a sign on it that read 'PARK CLOSED: NO TRESPASSING'. There was a hole cut in the gate that one could slip through. You could also simply walk around to a point where the fence has collapsed for access to the base. It was at this point that we decided to head back to the lighthouse parking lot to meet with our ride home. We would be returning the next day. Copyright Valentine's Designs 4
