Even though our operating season still has a ways to go, the Board and I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this year s accomplishments. The latest project has been to replace the roof. That is just about done and looks great. At a recent meeting, a member questioned whether we should have so much money in our account, since we are a non-profit organization. Many people are confused about what the term "non-profit" actually (or legally) means. Here are some items I found on the Internet to explain the term: Ownership is the quantitative difference between forand not-for-profit organizations. For-profit organizations can be privately owned and may re-distribute taxable wealth to employees and shareholders. By contrast, not-for-profit organizations do not have owners. They have controlling members or boards, but these people cannot sell their shares to others or personally benefit in any taxable way...while nonprofit organizations are able to earn a profit, more accurately called a surplus, such earnings must be retained by the organization for its self-preservation, expansion and future plans. Earnings may not benefit individuals or stake-holders In the United States, two of the wealthiest non-profit organizations are the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which has an endowment of $38 billion, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, which has an endowment of approximately $14.8 billion. Progress on the roof as of 8/24/2010 Don t forget that on Saturday of the Labor Day weekend we have a play day and a pass a dish picnic supper. One more reminder is that the fall open house will be coming up at the end of September and we will need your help. Al Francis let us know that Jim Stuart passed away Friday morning. Jim was one of Harold s friends that in the early days of the club used to attend So FLLS actually is an unusual non-profit in that we have so little money! Most non-profits have big money and big investments. Non-profits can also hire paid employees as long as those employees are not "members" of the organization. Many golf clubs are also 501(c)3 organizations, but will hire pros, greenskeepers, restaurant staff, etc. for the benefit of the actual "members" who pay hefty annual dues, but get no monetary benefit. (Continued) We do have a good surplus even after paying for a new roof. Here are some projects waiting for time and money: 1. The engine house needs new siding and a new roof. 2. The clubhouse is in serious need of remodeling! We need a place for our library with room for expansion (some of our library is currently housed in the engine house and storage boxes). 3. It has been suggested that we have a dedicated kitchen. 4. The shop is used more for storage than anything else. If you wanted to use the lathe, it would take you all day to clean up the mess. 5. Wouldn t it be nice to have a shower at the club? I suggest that the planning committee take a serious look at these and possibly other future needs. I would also suggest that we need a much larger surplus that what we currently have in the bank!

Electrical power system has been set up with a second location. Electrical problem was fixed. Frogs have returned. Treasurer: Tim Guenther: June beginning balances $8,631.71; total deposits $605; total checks $1,803.87, and ending balance $7, Some open house bills are still coming in but the profit should be around $3,000. NRG Energy made a $413 matching donation. Balance $12,128. Good & Welfare: Ivan Boeye: Dave Conroy s daughter is in hospice care. Roger Adriaansen was involved a traffic accident. Steve Pontarelli s father had a mild stroke last week. Jack Wylie strongly recommends that any questionable hoses on oxy acetylene torches are replaced based on personal experience Open House Review: Rotation of jobs worked pretty well Jack acknowledged the effort of everyone involved Conductor worked out well but use of the air horns need to be refined Conductor need to work with the engineer when ready to leave the station Engineers signaling when leaving the station are very useful to the crossing guards Suggestion to add seat with backs for engineers Jeff mentioned that more trains running turns over people more which could lead to more donations If you have any suggestions about the engines let Hank know Two car trains worked out well Kitchen support worked out well Our newest Gauge One operator tests his train. One-Inch: Guy Wicksall: Working on the signaling system and developing the circuit diagram. No expenses expected soon Inch & Half: Ted Taylor: Problem noted on the south loop Track at the car barn is installed Ballasted track going to the woods Dick Smock brought his tractor out to help with the ballast Loose tie rods on the bridge need to be fixed Hank is leading the turnout crew effort to complete the south end of the yard by the next open house Ed is working on guard rails while Skip and Dave are preparing points to use for the turnout project Dave Wierowski put together a weather proof operating system for the turnout leading into the station Al Francis and Don Jermyn painted the turnout targets such that yellow is the superior track and red is the inferior track

4 Library: Tim Guenther explained that public libraries are culling railroad books from their shelves which make our library more valuable. However we need a long term plan to provide adequate storage and organization. Ken Parkinson has offered to donate his book collection. Diesels: Hank: John Spencer commended Hank for the performance of the engines during the meet. Club House: Trim work is planned. Jack will set the date for the roof replacement. Tool shed: Dave Wierowski has found plans for maintenance of way structures that will likely be proposed. Transfer Table Storage: A new stub track is proposed on the west end of the steamup area of the transfer table to be used for short-term storage. Old Business Visiting Organizations: Sodus recreational program will visit on Wednesday July 28 9:00 to 11:00 with a rain date of August 18. Seneca Falls ARC will visit on Wednesday August 4 at 10:00. Coordinator is needed for show displays. The Board discussed getting a portable DVD player and using it for displays and safety training. New Business Replacement of water pump: Ed purchased a new pump for potable water supply. Reflective tape doesn t show up that well but the painted switch stands did show up Transfer table safety push don t pull Need volunteers for long-term planning and train show display committees. Display committee has to organize a show kit assembled. Next weekend is the Model railroader s run day. Ed asked people to come out to run trains and demonstrate equipment for visitors. Jack Wylie presented a plaque to Bob Moore for his support on the track. Jack is donating another gas grill F.L.L.S. Business Meeting August 14, 2010, Marengo, NY Secretary Note: My thanks to Sue Henrichs for taking notes in my absence. Good & Welfare: Ivan Boeye: Dave Conroy s daughter died from cancer. Bob Moore had an eye hemorrhage and surgery on 8/20. Dave Wierowski had a blood clot in his lung but is doing OK now. Tim went to the Pageant of Steam and saw Monte May and Bob Hoffman who was getting around in a golf cart. 7 ¼ Gauge: Ted Taylor thanked Ralph, Tom, Bill, Jeff and Randy for their help ballasting the main line and re-building the upper yard. The new stub siding at the transfer table is done and working well. The walkway for the high rail to the transfer table is being designed by Tim and Tim and Jack will build. Hank has completed one switch for the upper yard. 4 ¾ Gauge: The one inch track has some permanently wet areas, which make track detection difficult. Guy developed some mechanical switches that are activated by train wheels (treadles). He had one for show and tell. Gauge One: The electrical connections in the main yard have been re-worked. Jim Henrichs extended the wall on the inside of the upper loop where we

5 had a problem with erosion. The live steam elevated line was laid out and stone put down. It is not to be used as a go kart track. Workshop: Bob Moore purchased a dolly using club funds for the band saw. Dick Smock has a new engine Displays: Ralph Dressler has volunteered to chair the display committee. He is working with Roger to prepare for the Syracuse train show in November. Jack and Jerry finishing up the roof on 8/27/2010. Contrasts of Switzerland Tour Grounds: Dick Smock spent 8/6 loading stone and ballast for two different projects and it was much appreciated. He suggested that we rent a chipper in the fall to do clean up on the south end. Visiting Organizations: Visits by Sodus recreational program and the Seneca Falls ARC were successful. There also was a church group and colleagues of Roger Caiazza visited on 8/26. We need to figure out a subtle way to have a donation can out. Clubhouse: Jerry the roofer got the materials on 8/23 and work started later in the week. As of 8/26 most of the work is complete. Dave Wierowski has stained the window frames. Long-Term Planning Committee: Reggie and Hank have suggested that we schedule this committee to meet after the business meeting. The purpose of the committee is to plan any permanent changes to track, buildings or landscaping. The suggestion was made to set up three and five year projects so there is an end date to the work. Your Pop Valve editor went to Germany and Switzerland earlier in August on a Trafalgar Tours trip called the Contrasts of Switzerland. While the tour did visit many parts of the country the highlight for yours truly was that most of the travel was by train. While this tour was not specifically for rail fans, I was probably the only rail fan on the tour, there are pros and cons for that. On the one hand it was mildly annoying when someone grabbed a seat with a better view than mine and was not paying attention when we went over the Landwasser viaduct, but on the other hand there

6 was no one who knew, or at least thought he knew, every detail of every aspect of Swiss railroads and was willing to share that information for everyone. However, when you take over 1100 pictures it takes a while to get good ones uploaded and labeled. Of course if you want to see pictures of the great view before the tunnel, tree or catenary post that were blocked by same I could load everything. FLLS Visitors this Summer Balkenberg Dampfbahn cog engine in Interlaken The tour started in Zurich and went to St. Moritz the first day. That meant a trip over the Rhaetian Bahn and up to St. Moritz with tunnels, spiral tunnels and viaducts galore. The next day we travelled to Zermatt on the Glacier Express which meant going back down to Chur then east to Zermatt. The line to Zermatt includes spectacularly steep sections of rack railroad. Maranatha Baptist Church, Lyons NY on 8/4/2010 Sodus Recreational Program 7/28/2010 We spent two nights in Zermatt and then went down to Geneva. After a night there, we took the Golden Pass line eventually ending up in Luzern. Two nights there and it was back home from Zurich.
