Sicily and its Many Cultures The rugged island of Sicily was once considered the jewel of the Western world. Three indigenous groups were living on the island when the Greeks arrived in the eighth century.c. The Greeks ushered in an era of prosperity and intellectual progress, building great temples, crafting fine coins and perfecting the art of public speaking. Five centuries later, Syracuse was the most populous of all Greek cities. The Roman Republic later acquired the island.
