1 5 th Perth Albany Perth Mon 6 th Thur 9 th ober, 2014 Western Australia s classic 1200km Randonnée Ride guide WELCOME TO PAP2014 The following information gives an overview of event requirements and advice that will help you to plan your part in PAP2014. It is important that riders realise that an Audax Brevet of such duration requires them to be reasonably self-sufficient. Riders will traverse areas that are in the most part unpopulated. While this is one of the special features of this event and will provide riders with many highlights, it will also present some challenges for riders. Fortunately we have a very competent (and obliging) support crew operating at the controls and the riders will access various town sites along the route, however there may be long periods where no supplies are available and riders must provide for themselves. The necessity to carry your own emergency food supplies and possibly a space blanket should be considered. COMMUNICATIONS The following mobile numbers will be listed on your brevet card which you must carry at all times however riders are advised to enter the numbers into their own mobile phones prior to the event. RIDE ORGANISERS Tony Gillespie Mob: Alison McLernon Mob: Wayne Hickman Mob: REMOTE MOBILE SUPPORT Perry Raison Mob: PERTH BASE SUPPORT Carol Dooley Mob: In all emergency situations you should dial Emergency Services 000 first, then contact one of the Ride Organisers listed above. During the event mobile phone reception cannot be guaranteed. The support crew will endeavour to maintain contact with each other and riders as appropriate. Refer to the following pages for useful information about safety hazards, what is on offer at the various event control points and other advice about various sections of the route. The final page provides important information about safety and wildlife. Page 1

Known as Velocio's Seven Commandments it is as sound today as it was then. 1. Take light, frequent meals; eat before you are hungry and drink before you are thirsty. 2. Stop rarely and briefly so as not to lose your drive. 3. Cut out, at least when on the road, wine, meat and tobacco. (remember this was written by a Frenchman some 90 years ago) 4. Put on extra clothes before you get cold and take clothes off before you get hot; don't be afraid to expose your skin to sun, air and water. 5. Don't force your pace, ride within your capabilities, especially in the first few hours when you feel strong. 6. Never ride until so fatigued that you cannot eat or sleep. 7. Never pedal to show off. Page 5
6 Other important information SAFETY All PAP2014 participants are to be conversant with the Audax Australia Cycling Club Ride Rules and the Terms and Conditions of Entry for PAP2014. This information can be accessed via A high visibility fluoro/reflective vest is advisable even during the day as you will be riding in forested terrain with varying light conditions. An approved helmet is mandatory and a rear view mirror is also advisable. Some roads will have road trains on them (trucks with up to three trailers). If you are uncomfortable with large vehicles, pull over. If you see an oncoming truck, check behind you. If there is traffic coming up from your rear you may find it safer to pull over. Make the decision quickly and decisively ensuring that you do not slip on any loose materials on the road shoulder. Be aware of the wind blast from trucks as they overtake. If a pilot vehicle in front of a wide load comes up behind you, pull over until the load is passed. Trucks may not always be able to give you a wide berth so be aware of the truck's inability to move into the opposite lane. WILDLIFE You may encounter various forms of wildlife including, but not limited to, Kangaroos, Emus, Rabbits, Possums, Bandicoots (Quenda) and various night birds. You are most likely to encounter wildlife during the hours from dusk through to dawn. i.e. the hours of low light or darkness. Kangaroos are the most common danger. If you have not had first-hand experience with wild ranging kangaroos then the word 'unpredictable' is the most pertinent. High speeds on a bicycle (downhill) in low light present the highest risk to the rider. Even multiple high mounted lights may not be enough to prevent collision, depending on the proximity and direction of travel of the approaching 'roo. It is advisable to limit speeds in these situations especially in areas of forest and more particularly, well vegetated areas adjacent to open grassy areas such as farms which also provide reliable water sources. If you see a 'roo in close proximity do not attempt to predict its transit and realise that there will almost always be at least one more 'roo that you can't see at that moment. If the 'roo is on the road don't attempt to ride around it. You may encounter Emu or Possum in southern areas, though Possums are not commonly seen on WA roads. You may encounter a Bandicoot (Quenda) if riding on the Freeway Principle Shared Path. These are quite small (rabbit size or smaller) and like rabbits can be very unpredictable. FATIGUE If you need to sleep, pull over and do it! Carrying a space blanket is advisable if you judge that you may require a sleep between official sleep stations. Members of the event support crew may, at their discretion, remove you from the event and transport you to the next control if they assess that you are a danger to yourself and/or other road users.
