3 HOURGLASS NEWS Page 3 of 12 Greetings, Many of our members have said they are joining to take part in the field trips. Just want to let everyone know that the last two have been GREAT! Dodrill's Museum in Cushing was filled with so many different specimen's of rocks, fossils, and minerals. Each one had its own character. Hours and hours could be spent studying and learning. I asked John Worden to plan for our club to have a field trip later this year. Hope to see YOU there. Tulsa club annual Swap, Dinner, and Auction at the Hick's Rock Farm (Warehouse) was AMAZING. I've been there many times before but learned more this time than ever before. At our meeting on April 3rd we will be showing some of our "rock finds" and pictures of the Swap. There are drawers and drawers of slabs, boxes and boxes of specimens, all available for sale from.25 a pound to $40 a pound. Many are very rare and not available any longer. Do you want to plan another field trip opportunity to this location? It's up to you! Let us know what you think! It's your club. Without asking questions there are no answers. When you get to know me, I always ask questions. I'm always trying to lead you to think. 9 HOURGLASS NEWS Page 9 of 12 Who s Doing What - When and Where! We had a very special guest with un in March, Cathy Miller who is Gordon McDowell s daughter. It was nice visiting with her and learning a bit about Gordon s estate sale in May. Among those missing in March, we know that John Worden was at a church retreat, Debbie McGill had knee replacement surgery the evening before, Bobett Larkey was visiting her daughter in Texas and Valera Sheets is still gone for the winter. Possibly the Woodward folks were staying in off roads that I ve heard were pretty bad. Don t know what happened to everyone else but we missed all of you! Debbie is back home recuperating from her surgery. We all want to say thanks to Teresa for some wonderful veggie refreshments and some of the best chocolate chip cookies I ve had in years! She brought a really awesome dip - I hope to purchase some myself one of these days. She says she orders the mix online! We had a really good business meeting accomplished quite a bit. Contracts are nearly ready for our November show. Flyers are now out for the April 12th swap. We discussed the Shawnee club s trip to Salt Plains on April 5 & 6. A few of us are planning to go for the day on April 5. There s a potluck that evening somewhere in the campground - I m trying to find out where and will send out an when I do. Mary Walters brought some really neat rocks that she got from the Washington Irving Trail Museum that was the 2nd part of the trip to Dodrill s Museum of Rocks, Minerals & Fossils on March 8. She had a very nice piece of turitella and bivalve conglomerate, a couple of oval slabs of what looked like blood sausage but were pumice, two pieces of dino bone, a piece of palm wood and a gorgeous hunk of petrified wood. Prez Leon Walters brought up the idea of getting together once a month in addition to our meeting just for coffee or brunch in Dinosaur Bone Cab order to get to know each other a little better. A volunteer committee was formed. Since I do some of the booking for my Red Hat chapter, I volunteered to find out what restaurants here in Enid have rooms available just for a visit - not really a meeting - and when. I ll bring that information to our April meeting. Teresa Rogge is hard at work building a web site for the EGMS. She has sent out an to those of us online asking about a name for our site - I hope you all took the time to reply to her. It is so wonderful to see so many of our new members taking an active part in our club. That s what makes us grow and what makes us great! Prez Leon s pep talk must have helped. I know that some of us are young enough (wow, that sounds great to me!) to still be working but once we set up our monthly get acquainted times, I hope that even those of you who are working will try to come as often as your work schedule permits. Please remember to contact me (your Editor, Sue at 242*7288) with any doings, happenings, sickness or wellness that you would like to report. Remember, we can t call and congratulate you or commiserate with you unless we know what s going on.

11 Variscite A cousin of Turquoise By Teresa Rogge HOURGLASS NEWS Page 11 of 12 Variscite is a relatively rare phosphate mineral. Its name is derived from the word, Variscia, the historical name of Vogtland in Germany, where it was first found in Variscite is sometimes referred to as Utahlite and Lucinite. Variscite is often confused with turquoise, though variscite tends to be greener in color rather than having the blue hues typical of turquoise. The Variscite from Nevada usually contains This Variscite is from Lucin, Utah. black spider-webbing in the matrix and can easily be confused with greenish turquoise. Turquoise contains traces of copper whereas Variscite does not. Variscite is colored by traces of chromium rather than copper. Variscite is softer than turquoise, having a Moh s hardness of 3.5 to 4.5, whereas turquoise has a hardness of 5 to 6. Variscite often contains white veins of the calcium aluminum phosphate mineral crandalite. Variscite is relatively porous and has a vitreous waxy luster. Variscite s color is predominantly a shade of green ranging from pale green to emerald green. Not all Variscite is green. The white Variscite cabochons to the left came from the White Angel Mine near Cerillos, New Mexico. Variscite is also found in Bolivia, Austria, the Czech Republic, Australia, Venezuela, North Carolina, Arkansas, Nevada and Utah. Variscite is prized by collectors and is also used for cabochon gemstones in jewelry. References: White Angel Mine Variscite, Cerillos, NM Editor s Note: Great article, Teresa! If anyone wants to see more pretty pieces of variscite, just do a google image search with variscite as the subject. There are some really pretty pieces!
