Austwick Hall Sculpture Trail, Applicant: M Pearson and E Culley SDF grant: 1,820 Total project cost: 3,640 Austwick Hall is a privately owned historic house which offers visitor accommodation. It is set in 13 hectares of gardens and includes a woodland trail. The aim of this project is to create a woodland sculpture trail to promote art within the Yorkshire Dales. This will involve an archaeological survey of the garden in order to locate the original late Georgian/early Victorian paths and record other features of historic interest such as a sundial, fountain and plinth. The SDF grant will be used to survey and record the paths and features, clearance of shrubs, coppicing of trees around a viewing platform and renovation of the paths. The Dales Hub, Applicant: Hannah Wallington SDF grant: 11,830 Total project cost: 22,808 Hannah Wallington is a freelance marketer based in Swaledale. She plans to set up The Dales Hub which will aim to provide a marketing and web-based booking system for activity providers in the Yorkshire Dales. The website will showcase all the activities, services and accommodation that the Yorkshire Dales National Park has to offer in one central point. It will also offer a central reservation point and online booking system which will offer bundled activities from different providers to create a packaged holiday service. 2 Photo: Passengers joining the bus service in Dent Village, Western Dales Community Bus Service Ltd Western Dales Community Bus: Western Dales Bus Service Ltd SDF grant: 15,000 Total project cost: 65,000 The Western Dales Community Bus project is a new service designed to meet the particular public transport needs of the Dent area of the National Park. The service will be run by local volunteers, and will provide a scheduled private bus service to Sedbergh, Kirkby Lonsdale and neighbouring parishes. It will also link in with Kendal and other centres as it develops. The bus service will serve residents and visitors by offering a connection service with trains at Dent Station on the Settle-Carlisle line on Saturdays throughout the year and on Sundays in the summer. This will allow visitors from West Yorkshire and Lancashire to access the National Park by public transport. Photo: Promotional logo, Soil Association School Farmers Markets, Applicant: Soil Association SDF grant: 15,395 Total project cost: 20,527 The Soil Association is a charity organisation which campaigns for healthy, humane and sustainable food, farming and land use. They have developed a project which will lead to farmers markets operating from school halls and playgrounds at 6 schools within the National Park. Schoolchildren and staff will research and promote local producers to exhibit their goods. The project aims to celebrate and promote local produce from the National Park whilst supporting local food producers. In the long-term the project will enable schools to continue holding 2-3 markets a year, raising funds in the process. It promotes good management of trees and woodlands so that they are better protected, improved and expanded. This project will enable 4 educational visits for primary schools to Strid Wood, a 145 acre ancient wood set beside the river Wharfe on the Bolton Abbey Estate. During the visits children will take part in a range of practical activities that are designed to be fun, such as adventure trails and shelter building to help them engage with the woodland environment. Costs include a part time project manager, use of Strid Wood, educational visits and travel costs. You can find out more by visiting Photo: The Wensleydale Creamery s Visitor Centre in Hawes, YDNPA Refrigeration Heat Recovery, Applicant: Wensleydale Creamery SDF grant: 7,500 Total project cost: 15,000 Wensleydale Creamery is a manufacturer of cheese based in Hawes. The Creamery has a busy visitor centre, museum, restaurant, café and retail facilities. The project will lead to the installation of a heat recovery system that recycles waste heat from the air conditioning refrigeration plant at the Visitor Centre. It is hoped that the energy recovered will be used to heat hot water systems in the visitor facilities and restaurant and will reduce on-site energy CO2 emissions by 15 tonnes a year. 4 Photo: Promotional logo, Fibregarden Garsdale and Dent Broadband Project Applicant: Fibre Garden CIC SDF grant: 50,000 Total project cost: 700,000 Fibre Garden Community Interest Company was originally set up by Dent and Garsdale Parish Councils in Their aim was to deliver affordable superfast broadband to the two dales. This project aims to assist with the delivery of a fully inclusive, future-proofed fibre to the home superfast broadband network to every household in Garsdale and Dentdale. It is envisaged that this community-led scheme will offer service speeds of 40 Mbps and 100 Mbps enabling businesses, education, media healthcare, tourism and agricultural usage. 60 km of network will connect the two dales and 500-plus premises will have the opportunity of connection. It is also planned to develop a community dig to involve local people in the practical task of installing underground cables. Photo: A participant showing her artwork creation, Purple Patch Arts We Love Beamsley 2014, Applicant: Purple Patch Arts SDF grant: 1,388 Total project cost: 4,138 Purple Patch Arts are an organisation which exists to improve the lives and life chances of people with learning disabilities. They have developed a project that will enable a group of young adults with learning disabilities to stay for a weekend in holiday accommodation that is fully accessible. The participants will have the opportunity of taking part in art activities and learning about the National Park s special qualities. Participants will also be able to interact with the landscape and environment of the Dales where they might otherwise be excluded because of their access needs. 5 Photo: Participants on Lovely Seat in Wensleydale, Mark Reid Yorkshire Dales Outdoor Festival, Applicant: Team Walking SDF grant: 1,300 Total project cost: 2,250 Team Walking is owned and operated by Mark Reid who is an acclaimed writer and experienced mountain leader. In 2013 Mark ran a pilot project exploring the idea of a Yorkshire Dales Outdoors Festival. This took place over 2 days in September The festival included various guided walks, outdoor skills and mountain biking. The Festival attracted around 100 people to the Hawes area for the weekend. The participants benefitted from the skills of 6 mountain leaders and the knowledge of Dales Volunteers who were able to advise on the history, wildlife and culture of the area. Susan Allison Grinton Churchyard Environment Project, Applicant: St Andrew s Church, Grinton SDF grant: 2,000 Total project cost: 3,720 St Andrews Church serves the parish of Grinton in Swaledale and is a Grade I Listed Building. The church is also home to several bat species. In 2012 the SDF was used to develop a successful bat project which included a display panel within the church, seasonal bat walks and a bat detector. This new project is an extension of this work and aims to introduce bees into the churchyard through the provision of several hives. The project aims to increase awareness of bees, to encourage young bee keepers and to educate the general public on the importance of bees for the environment. It is hoped that a thriving colony of bees will encourage pollination of flowers nearby. Malham Tarn Tramper Project, Applicant: The National Trust SDF grant: 6,000 Total project cost: 8,000 The Malham Tarn Tramper project is managed by the National Trust. The project aims to support people with mobility difficulties to enable them to have the opportunity to enjoy a ramble in the Dales by using a specially designed all terrain wheelchair called a tramper. The tramper will open up a completely new experience for disabled people as it will give them independence to explore areas of the Dales that would otherwise be inaccessible. The tramper will be used on risk assessed routes around Malham Tarn and will be available to hire from the National Trust from April You can find out more by visiting The SDF grant paid for the cost of the tramper, a transportation trailer, promotional material and route improvements. Photo: Flags flying high at the village fete in Hudswell, George & Dragon Inn Hudswell Village Fete and Music Festival, Applicant: Hudswell Volunteer Committee for the Village Fete SDF grant: 1,490 Total project cost: 2,440 The residents of Hudswell village held a new village fete and musical festival in September 2013 to celebrate the benefits of Hudswell village as a sustainable community. The last time the festival ran was more than 20 years ago. The event raised awareness of local charities as well as raising funds. The Fete also incorporated a wild flower stand which promoted the use of wild flower seeds that are suitable for gardens. The funds raised in 2013 will now be used to assist in enabling the village fete to become an annual event. The SDF grant paid for native wild flower seed, promotional materials and a reuse and recycle puppet show. 6
7 Photo: Promotional logo, The Dales Farmers Network The Low Row Grassland Project, Applicant: The Dales Farmers Network SDF grant: 998 Total project cost: 1,995 The Yorkshire Dales Farmer Network was established in It was set up for farmers by farmers to enable them to share knowledge and experiences relating to upland farming. This project aims to improve the sustainable management of grassland in Swaledale by supporting a small group of farmers to purchase a soil aerator for use on their farms. The purchase of the soil aerator will enable farmers to improve soil conditions and reduce soil compaction, surface water run off and will assist with diffusing pollution. The project will help to reduce the need for fertilisers and should result in a better understanding of soil management. Chimney Balloons Project, Applicant: Diane Hubbard SDF grant: 5,000 Total project cost: 10,650 Diane Hubbard is a mechanical engineer specialising in addressing energy efficiency in the home and has founded Green Footsteps which offers a range of services to help reduce domestic energy usage. Her project aims to tackle an area of energy loss from chimney flues when they are not in use and aims to tackle rural fuel poverty in traditional homes. The grant will be used to carry out research over a 3 year period into energy loss from chimney flues in hard to treat homes. 3 community events will raise awareness of the energy loss through chimney flues and 50 chimney balloons will be distributed at the events so that householders can fit them in their own properties. A thermal imaging workshop will also take place at 6 homes. Long Preston Wet Grassland Project, Applicant: RSPB Bowland Wader Project SDF grant: 12,500 Total project cost: 19,416 The Long Preston Wet Grassland Project has been developed through a partnership between the RSPB, Natural England, The Environment Agency, The Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, North Yorkshire County Council, local landowners and the National Park Authority. The area is a unique floodplain that is abundant with wildlife and an important area for migrant and breeding birds. Two walking trails have been developed to enable people to enjoy and learn about the area. The Long Preston Trail is 14 km and starts in Settle. This project aims to improve and expand the access opportunities that the area offers and to engage local interest groups in raising awareness of the new facilities. To find out more visit The SDF grant will contribute towards the construction costs of a bird hide and the creation of a wader scrape, interpretation, revised trails map and the production of a bird report. Photo: Promotional logo, The Deer Initiative Thermal Imaging Deer in Yorkshire, Applicant: The Deer Initiative SDF grant: 1,950 Total project cost: 4,630 The Deer Initiative is an organisation which works in partnership to ensure the delivery of sustainable, well managed wild deer populations in England. The effective management of woodland can be difficult without proper protection from deer. Therefore the monitoring of deer populations in the National Park will enable landowners to manage them more effectively. This will have long term conservation benefits for woodlands and their associated flora and fauna. This project aims to monitor deer populations using thermal imaging to enable sustainable management of deer in over 10,000 hectares of identified woodland within the National Park. The project will run for 10 months and will raise public awareness of wild deer in the Yorkshire Dales. 9 Photo: A gathering of Dalesbred sheep on Penyghent Wayne Hutchinson Dalesbred Sheep Promotion, Applicant: Dalesbred Sheep Breeders Association Ltd Total project cost: 4,261 SDF grant: 2,520 Dalesbred sheep are native to the National Park and are naturally suited to the harsh landscape. They cover a similar area to Swaledale sheep however they are less well known despite the breed being commercially viable. The breed is considered to be vital in maintaining the landscape as it is naturally suited to the often harsh dales landscape where it thrives. The Dalesbred Sheep Breeders Association has therefore developed a project which aims to promote the Dalesbred sheep to new breeders. To find out more visit The SDF grant will contribute towards the creation of a website, photography, merchandise, publicity material and some staff time to co-ordinate the project. Photo: Relay mast located at Foxup, David Hood Upper Wharfedale Fast Broadband Electrification, Applicant: Upper Wharfedale Fast Broadband Project SDF grant: 14,712 Total project cost: 21,882 The Upper Wharfedale Fast Broadband Project is a community group which has been set up to deliver a high speed broadband service to people who live in Upper Wharfedale. The project has already enabled more than 70 properties in Kettlewell, Conistone, Kilnsey and Buckden to become connected. This service is already delivering up to 30 Mb/s of broadband speed to homes and businesses in these areas. This project focuses on enabling the community group to extend the provision of mains power to three remote relay masts in Littondale and one in Langstrothdale. It will also provide a two day battery backup for the broadband source at Kettlewell School and 10 local repeaters. This will make the service more resilient. SDF grant: 18,000 Total project cost: 46,200 The Ingleborough Pony Bus Service will provide a summer Sunday/bank holiday bus service to the Dales focused around the Ingleborough Nature Reserve. It will be operated by the Dales and Bowland Community Interest Company. Services will originate in a number of nearby towns and cities. Services and routes form part of the Dalesbus package service which will operate on 28 Sundays and Bank Holidays from Easter until October. The project will promote the use of alternative transport to the private car and will offer further opportunities for people without their own transport to experience and enjoy the special qualities of the National Park. Judy Rogers Dales Farmers in Education, Applicant: The Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust SDF grant: 15,262 Total project cost: 20,350 The Dales Farmers in Education Project aims to offer practical support to Dales Farmers in providing access to farm and financial support to schools visiting farms in the National Park over a 1 year period. The project includes a series of taster events which will involve teachers, schools and farmers. A mapping exercise will also be undertaken that will identify what opportunities there are for more visits and what support farmers need in running school visits. The project will offer one to one support to farmers before, during and after running education visits.
