Some of the things reported this month include a broken bin on the community route, a missing street sign at Cherry Tree Walk, trees overgrowing onto footpaths at Green Park, fly tipping near Danygraig Crescent and numerous other issues. If you see something that needs reporting then please use the contact details for the council at the end of the article and let s make Talbot Green an even better place to live. Please remember that I can only include in my article what I know about, so if you are doing something in the village that you would like to shout about, or would like me to get involved in then please do get in touch. Bronhaul / Heol-y-Gyfraith Residents Association A big thank you to Paul, Leighton and the rest of the team for an invite to their Royal Wedding Street Party. It was a great event enjoyed by all the residents who attended. I was asked to be the quizmaster for the evening and produced a Royal themed quiz which ended in a draw and a much drawn out tiebreaker question! The annual trip to Brean Sands is taking place on the 2nd June and I am looking forward to a day out at the seaside! Tonysguboriau Year 5 and 6 had a great time on their school trips to Llangrannog and Morfa Bay respectively Above is a picture of year 5 before heading to their disco at Llangrannog. To see more pictures of what the children are up to you can check out the school twitter pages. The main school twitter handle and from there you can find details of each of the individual classes. One of my favourite pictures from twitter is this one of Miss Morris holding up a slightly overcooked flapjack!! I m not expecting to see her and Miss Lane on Masterchef any time soon. The school fete takes place on Saturday 23rd June from 11am until 2:30pm. It is free entry and there will be lots going on including the talent show and performances from the school choir. If you would like a stall at the event please contact the school office on Sports Days this year, weather allowing are on Monday 25th for the foundation phase and Tuesday 26th June for the juniors. Leekes Lights The contractors, Centre Great have now added Louvers to the left-hand turn lights from the Matalan direction. Council officers are hopeful that this will rectify the situation which had resulted in some drivers misinterpreting the signals since the new lights had been installed. We are all aware that this has been an accident blackspot, and officers will continue to monitor the data for this junction. Llantrisant Community Council Fellow Councillors elected me to the position of Vice Chair onto Llantrisant Community Council at the AGM. Cllr Allan Matheson takes up the role of Chair. I am delighted to have been voted into the role as it will result in me having an even greater involvement with all aspects of the running of the Community Council. Llantrisant Big Picnic Llantrisant s Big Picnic takes place on Saturday 9th June from 12pm until 6pm. There are around 28 stalls and there will be entertainment throughout the day. Bring your picnic, deck chairs and blankets and enjoy a community event. I will be there helping to run the Llantrisant Guildhall stall. Recycling The Choice is Clear was in Talbot Green recently to help make residents aware of the changes to the waste collection rules. For most people it should make no difference, however it basically boils down to you not being able to put any black bags out alongside your wheelie bin. Around 80% of household waste should be recycled either via the clear bags or your food waste caddy. These changes come into effect on the 4th June. Foster Carers Some of the RCT Foster Care team were in the area, at both Aldi s in Talbot Green and Llantrisant Leisure Centre towards the end of May. We are facing a shortage of foster carers within RCT and if you would be interested in finding out more about the opportunities you can contact the team on Bus Stops It was a little unfortunate that the bus shelters were temporarily removed a day before the only day of bad weather this month! Hopefully by the time the Diary is out they will all be back in place (like this one on Lanelay Road) following the improvements to the bus stops themselves. Problems The council itself should be your first port of call to report issues on , or online at rctcbc.gov.uk/en/contactus/ Reportit.aspx. If you contact me by phone and there is no answer then please leave a message so I can get back to you. My contact details are: Cllr. Stephen Powell 18 Talbot Close, Talbot Green, CF72 8AS stephen.m.powell@ rctcbc.gov.uk

4 Pontyclun Pontyclun Primary School During May I went on a walk around the Pontyclun Primary School as a governor and member of the health and safety committee. We do this every term to pick up any problems and make sure that we resolve them. On the walk last month we stopped to look at the wonderful display of wellington boots in the infant children s yard. Proposed changes to the Mobile Library Service RCT Council want to improve the mobile library service for residents but it does mean some major changes. The proposal aims to improve the services to a standard comparable with that of static libraries whilst ensuring that the Library service remains accessible to communities throughout Rhondda Cynon Taf. This will involve reducing the number of existing vehicles from three to two and investing in two new purpose built vehicles, which will have access to Wi-Fi so that librarians can link with the Council information services. Instead of calling every two weeks the mobile libraries will call every three weeks as you are allowed to borrow books for three weeks. However, the number of stops will be reduced from 393 very short stops to 48 longer stops. This will enable the service to expand the range of provision available on the vehicles. The housebound service will be expanded to allow more people to qualify for home delivery of books. You can respond to the consultation by taking part in a survey on board a Mobile Library Vehicle or Going online GetInvolved/Consultations/ CurrentConsultations/ CurrentConsultations.aspx and responding to the Mobile library consultation Cycle access around Pontyclun During May I met the officer, responsible for cycle paths, on the cycle path from Pontyclun to Cross Inn. If you are a walker or a cyclist you will know that there is a section missing. Money has been set aside this year to produce the design for the missing link. I have also asked for an access/ exit path to be built to allow walkers and cyclists easier access to Tesco. Whilst we wait for the missing link, blue and white arrows have been put on lampposts to direct you through the housing estate to link up with the community route to Pontypridd. Recycling During May, Rhondda Cynon Taf held a roadshow in Pontyclun encouraging more people to recycle. RCT residents and Council work together to recycle more rubbish than almost all other areas in Wales, however, we always need to improve. In Pontyclun we all have a weekly green waste and recycling bag collection and a fortnightly wheelie bin collection. In future we will not be allowed to add black bags of rubbish alongside as we have unlimited opportunities to recycle. Afternoon Social Group Café 50 in co-operation with the Memory Clinic at Royal Glamorgan hospital run a social club for people living with dementia and their families and carers and anyone else who wants to join a friendly group. We meet on the second and fourth Monday of the month from 1.30 p.m to 3.30 p.m. We play board games, do jigsaws, knit, do craft work or just chat and have a cup of tea and a biscuit. Advice is always available from Donna or Simon. Phone me on if you want to come along Yarnmongers and Welsh Ambulance Trust working together What a magnificent partnership we have between Yarnmongers and the Welsh Ambulance Trust. Yarnmongers is a knitting group that we set up when Café 50 first opened. It meets on Thursday every week between 10 and midday. Most members of the group knit for charity and over the last year, there has been a real effort to make twiddle muffs and twiddle blankets for people living with dementia and trauma teddies for people being taken by ambulance to hospital. The ambulance staff find that as well as the teddies, twiddle muffs are invaluable to help keep patients calm whilst the ambulance crew treat the patient. Welsh Ambulance Trust are rolling out teddies on ambulances across Wales. They have recruited knitters in north Wales and are now trying to recruit knitters in south east Wales. This is all thanks to our group of wonderful knitters in Pontyclun, led by Sheila Harris. Youth engagement Rhondda Cynon Taf is remodelling the services for youth engagement. The aim is to support young people aged between 11 and 25 to improve their resilience to deal with current and future challenges, and encouraging their positive engagement in and contribution to the communities in which they live. I invite all young people who want to be involved in community groups, environment groups or local politics to or telephone me and we can discuss the options. Welsh Water / Dwr Cymru Welsh Water are coming to the end of their work in Fairview Close and have turfed the green in Rhyd y Nant. The residents have been very patient whilst Dwr Cymru used their green as the site office and sewerage works were undertaken in Fairview Close, not Rhyd y Nant When I met with their customer liaison staff on site, she was keen that residents should know about the help available for some residents to pay the water and sewerage bills. For residents with only one or two members in the household it is often cheaper to have a water meter. If you have an income of less than and receive one of a number of benefits and credits you can apply for help to pay your water bill through Welsh Water HelpU. Weekly Councillor Surgery Margaret Griffiths and Paul Griffiths hold a weekly surgery each Tuesday from 9 am to 9.45 at Pontyclun Library to cover all issues relating to RCT Council and Pontyclun Community Council. 5 Pontyclun Community Council Picnic in the Park 23 June Everyone is invited to the Pontyclun Picnic on Saturday, 23 June, from 1 pm to 4 pm in our very own Pontyclun Park. Bring all your own family children, babies, third cousins, hen hen mamgu a thadcu. Bring a blanket and the best picnic in Pontyclun. You will meet friends for life. There will be traditional family games and races, and a fancy dress competition. The picnic is organised by the Community Council and coincides with similar events throughout the UK in the Great Get Together inspired by Joe Cox MP who was killed for proclaiming that there is always more that unites than divides us and that life is for fun. Pontyclun Park It is so good to see so many people using Pontyclun Park Want to learn a new skill? Want to keep busy? now that the Spring sunshine has arrived. The open space, the children s play area and the fenced ball games area are bringing young and less young together. It was only two years ago that Pontyclun Community Council finished its 200,000 investment in the Park, taking a 25-year lease on the old school field, replacing all the fencing around the football field and along the road side as well as installing the play areas. Our community council staff work most days on litter picks and doing safety checks. Community Garden in the Park Once the Community Council had created the Park it was able to provide land for volunteers and sponsors to provide a Community Garden where we can all enjoy growing plants. Many wonderful Pontyclun residents, led by Lisa Williams, have given their time to creating the garden. Many local businesses have provided their support: The Community Shop is providing a grant for lockable storage This is what Pontyclun is about people working together supported by local businesses and their local council. Concrete Canvass You may have seen that there is a new sign on the former Crabtree and Evelyn factory opposite Leekes Concrete Canvas. I have been in touch with the company to extend a warm welcome to Pontyclun. Concrete Canvas is a modern innovative manufacturer Want to make new friends? We are a social centre for any person over the age of 50 who would like the opportunity to socialise and meet new people. We offer a variety of activities as well as a lunch service, Monday to Friday. Our 2 course lunch includes a cup of tea or coffee and is served from 12noon to 1pm for Drop in as and when you like during our opening times. You don t need to book for lunch or activities. However, if you prefer one of us can meet you to show you around and introduce you to everyone. Cafe 50, Heol Yr Orsaf Pontyclun café Community Centre, Pontyclun CF72 9EE or cafe50@pontyclun-cc.gov.wales which produces a range of rapid construction concrete products which have been used in disaster areas as well as in construction and petrochemicals. It is named the 2nd fastest growing manufacturer in the UK. It has outgrown its current site in Treforest and chose Pontyclun for its relocation. We are close to the motorway and the railway. We have access to skilled labour and are close to high quality colleges and universities. We have previously written about Renishaw which is another advanced manufacturer located on Junction 34. These two firms show the potential of Pontyclun as a centre for advanced manufacturing. Peter Brewin, the Director of Concrete Canvas, has told me of his company s intention to be a good neighbour. They are already making good the hedged boundary around the site. If anyone has a question about future operations, let me know and I will pass it on. Manufacturing on the site should start early next year. History of the Pontyclun Tinplate Works Edgeley Thomas has continued his series of local histories with the publication of a paper on the tinplate works that occupied land alongside the railway line at the end of Station Terrace. You will find a copy in Pontyclun Library. Tinplate production started in 1872 when the market for products of iron and steel coated with tin was rapidly expanding; and South Wales was a global centre of production. This site was chosen because supplies and products could be transported by rail and there was a good supply of water from the Nant Melin where it meets the River Ely. In 1894 there were 106 workers. Thereafter the industry contracted due to the imposition of protective tariffs by the Government of the USA tragically history repeats itself. Defibrillator Thanks to the Llantrisant Rotary Club for funding the provision of a defibrillator which is now located on the external wall of the Community Council office. Any of us witnessing another person in the centre of Pontyclun suffering a heart attack can use this defibrillator can now help by following the instructions that come with this invaluable installation. Because of the help of the Rotary Club we can save lives. Rail Operator A new company will soon replace Arriva as our local train provider. It will form a partnership with the Welsh Government. I have written to the Minister, Ken Skates, asking for assurances that the new contract will include provision for more trains with more carriages at Pontyclun. AGM The Community Council has allocated council responsibilities for the coming year: Chair Paul Griffiths Vice Chair Anne Jackson Environment Karan Lane Economy Gwyn Jackson Social Margaret Griffiths Weekly Councillor Surgery Margaret Griffiths and Paul Griffiths hold a weekly surgery each Tuesday from 9 am to 9.45 at Pontyclun Library to cover all issues relating to RCT Council and Pontyclun Community Council. The event was a great success and I would like to thank everyone who took part to make it such a lovely day. Everyone I spoke to enjoyed their time and I m sure this is now an annual feature for the village. Thanks also to Llantrisant Folk Club for providing the music. Continuing the Summer theme, Tylagarw Village Hall sponsors their first family trip to Mumbles in a vintage double decker bus setting off from the pub on Saturday 30th June at 10am and returning back at 4pm for a social evening at the pub. Get in the spirit of yesteryear with 1950s fancy dress and make a real day of it. This looks like an amazing day out and lots of fun. Plus it s totally free for the residents of Tylagarw. Seats are limited, it s a vintage bus after all, so reserve your place by contacting Pat on Proposed Residential Development at Tylagarw I m getting many queries about this and I will keep everyone updated, but as of printing, there have been no detailed plans submitted to RCT. I know many of you have concerns and I will arrange a meeting for residents as soon as the detailed plans have been sent in to the Council s Planning Dept. Dog Bins I have ordered more dog fouling bins for the village and they will be installed soon. I will also be asking RCT s Streetcare dept if they can supply me with recycling bags and dog mess bags that residents can call in and collect at the pub. Village Spring Clean Thanks to all the volunteers that came out to support this on Saturday 19th May, it really showed that we are a community that cares about where we live. If you have any issues, please call in and see me at the pub for a cuppa. If you can t get to the pub, please ring me on , me at wayne_owen1971@hotmail. com. I m no longer part of Facebook. LLANHARRY Floral Display As Summer approaches, I for one can t wait to see the return of our fantastic floral display. It made a huge impression on the village last year and visitors were really impressed. Benches We ve had another addition to our beautiful benches with one now positioned at Elms Farm. I hope people get the opportunity to sit and enjoy the weather on these lovely seats. We ve added lots of these benches and dog waste bins throughout the village over the last year. It is by no means a job finished. If there are other parts of the village that you feel would benefit from these, please get in touch with me or speak to you Community Councillors who are working really hard for the village. Village Spring Clean We have a Spring Clean taking place on Saturday June 9th. We meet at 9:30am outside the shops and the more help we get from volunteers, the more we can achieve to tidy up the village. Thank you to Ffion Talbot for driving this forward and to Llanharry Community Council for backing it. Lets get the village looking at its best in time for the floral display. Youth Centre The Community Council has donated 500 to the youth centre for new resources and trips for the young people of the village. As we are aware, with RCT budget cuts, youth services are stretched and so this is a real help to the centre. They are an excellent, safe place for the children to meet up after school. BBQ There is a fundraising BBQ at The Boars Head on Saturday 9th June at 4pm to raise funds for Llanharry Primary School. Please come along to support the event and help our school. Village Clean Up volunteers get a free burger or hot dog. Pot Holes This is the unwelcome leftover from the winter months and with the severe winter we ve had, pot holes are cropping up all over the place. RCT have been busy making temporary repairs in fairmness. However, if you do notice any, please report them before they cause damage to cars. You can contact RCT direct via their website or contact me and I will pass the message on. Mobile Library I know people in the village use this valuable resource especially as we have no library in the village. I want to make residents aware that RCT is consulting with the public on proposals to reduce the service. They are talking about reducing the number of times the mobile library comes to the village but to extend the time period they stay for and to have free wifi access on the vans. There will also be a home delivery service for those residents that may have problems accessing the van. If you would like to see the proposals and make comment, please contact RCT via the website. Public Footpaths I ve had a few people speak to me with concern about what appears to be obstructions being put in place on some of our public footpaths. I will report any issues that arise from this to RCT on your behalf as I do not think this is acceptable. This part of the county borough is a fantastic place to live with fantastic new cycle paths to compliment the amazing network of footpaths and places to walk. Lets make sure we keep these paths open for all to enjoy. If you have any issues, please call in and see me at the pub for a cuppa. If you can t get to the pub, please ring me on , me at wayne_owen1971@hotmail. com. I m no longer part of Facebook. The reception lounge was full when Lee Stroud (Vice Chair) got up to welcome everyone and to thank them for their attendance. Lee was able to tell his audience that the season had been an outstanding success with over 50 boys and girls registering with the club in their first season which enabled teams to be fielded at under 7, 14 and 16. However, Lee was eager to point out that none of this would have been possible without the involvement of a team of dedicated volunteers whether that be as committee members or coaches. I therefore at this stage would like to thank these volunteers personally by naming them individually:- COMMITTEE Chair - Parmindra Sigh Pannu Vice Chair - Lee Stroud Secretary - Phil Kinnersley Media Officer - Mark Ballinger Safeguarding Officer [male] - Neil Thomas Safeguarding Officer [female] - Catherine Watkins Treasurer - Mark Holmes Committee members - Wayne Arnold and Simon Allen-Ridge COACHES Simon Allen-Ridge, Wayne Arnold, Mark Holmes, Phil Kinnersley, Presentation Setting Lee Stroud, Parmindra Singh Pannu and Leigh Hurrell My grateful thanks to you all. The presentations started with me being invited to the stage to present a club trophy to all registered players in recognition of their endeavours over the season. Then it was over to the Coaches to announce the individual winners under the different categories. UNDER 14 Top Goal Scorer - Nick Fernley Yours truly addressing the audience before the presentations Club and Individual Trophies Clubman - Mattia Mormile Player of the Year - Jacob Perkins Players Player of the year - Mahaveer Pannu Most Improved - Thomas Skelly Captain s Award - Mahaveer Pannu and Charlie Coles UNDER 16 Top Goal Scorer - Govind Pannu Players player of the year - Joe Preece Most Improved - Joe Preece Player of the year - Cole Dyckhoff Congratulations to you all. Looking forward to next season the club hope to expand their mini section which will include age groups from 6 to 11. Any parent interested in registering their child should ring Phil the Club Secretary on Similarly, if there are any budding coaches out there who would like to volunteer their services please contact the secretary. Training is on a Wednesday evening at the Llanilid fields and pre season training will start in late July at the commencement of the school holidays. [Mini Section-5pm to 6pm and Juniors pm] Bryncae Village s population is growing year on year so hopefully the club will go from strength to strength. My very best wishes go out to everyone involved. LLANHARAN CEMETERY It is pleasing to report that the roster system of opening and closing the cemetery gates on a Saturday and Sunday by volunteers from the Community Council is working very well. Many residents have contacted me to say how grateful they are and wish to express their thanks to all the volunteers. Unfortunately, there is a downside as the problem with fly tipping has returned on site. Just recently, I was at the cemetery attending to the family grave when I noticed a number of car seats and coverings had been dumped in the skip at the top of the cemetery. I, therefore, ask you all to be vigilant and to report anything suspicious. I would love to be in a position to name and shame those responsible for this unscrupulous behaviour. NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH CELEBRATE THE ROYAL WEDDING The Mountain Hare Neighbourhood Watch s Committee organised a Party in the Park on Saturday 19th May, to celebrate the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markel. The party started at 2pm at the Mountain Hare play area whose perimeter had been suitably decorated beforehand with bunting depicting the Union Jack. The event was well attended with dozens of children who were keen to take part in the organised events. [see photograph] First up was the Royal Egg Hunt where children had to collect eggs which had been scattered all over the field. Although recognition was given to those children who had collected the most eggs every participant was a winner as they were all presented with a Royal Chocolate Egg for their enjoyment. Next up was the Fancy Dress Competition where some of the entrants were dressed up as Bridesmaids [very appropriate]. The overall winner was Isabella Jones whose red dress won the day with the judges. The children were then invited to show off their skills in the Talent Competition. The winner was Erin Harris who impressed the judges with her beautiful singing. Second was George [singer] and third was Mason [comedian]. Congratulations to you all. The Picture Competition which of course had a Royal Theme was won by Finlay Kemp, Second was Felicity and Penelope and Third was Holly Nealon. Again congratulations to everyone. SCHOOL NEWS BRYNNAU PRIMARY SCHOOL It has been a busy few weeks with the children undertaking the National Test, the school is extremely proud of the way the children have stepped up to the challenge. DOSBARTH AUR & ARIAN The children are currently researching their new topic Hola Mexico where they will be learning about key geographical features and places of interest along with sampling traditional Mexican food. Both classes have also enjoyed working with CCFC over the past six weeks. DOSBARTH EFYDD & GLAS The children are busy making plans for their latest topic where they will be learning about the history of the local area. They will be visiting key areas around the village and woods to further their understanding of how things have changed over the years. The classes are also enjoying more football sessions with CCFC to develop their teamwork and coordination skills. DOSBARTH GWYRDD & MELYN The children had a wonderful time exploring Cardiff Castle, despite the rain! There was a guided tour of the Castle followed by a story Neat Feet Cymru telling workshop. During the workshop the storyteller used puppets to make the children s story ideas come to life. All the children used their voices to create a class story that was recorded and a digital copy sent to school, all enjoyed it. DOSBARTH ENFYS The adventures of Scorch the dragon continue whilst in the woods the children rescued Scorchette (a female dragon) from the oldest tree. Since then the children have been busy planning a tea party for the dragons first date. The children have made invites, place name cards as well as making delicious sandwiches for the tea party. We shall look forward to the next instalment. ROYAL WEDDING CELEBRATIONS The whole school joined together to celebrate the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle with a special wedding tea party outside in the sunshine. It was lovely to see everyone dressed up in red, white and blue to enjoy the festivities. BIG PEDAL SUPERHERO DAY As per usual the Bike It Day was a great success. Everyone dressed up as their favourite Superhero and three quarters of the school came to school on bikes or scooters for the day. All the children enjoyed watching the procession of decorated bikes and scooters, from which worthy winners Mobile Foot Clinic Sharon Neal SAC Dip Fhp Registered Foot Health Practitioner Telephone for an appointment Weekends and evenings available Treatments offered in your own home Nail Trimming, Corns, Callus, Cracked Heels, Verrucae, Fungal infections, Diabetic Foot Care Healthy Feet are Happy Feet were chosen and this was not an easy decision. Dolau Blues played some excellent football throughout the tournament and were the dominant team in most games. However, playing on such small pitches didn t allow the team to express their football skills fully! Dolau finished 2nd in their group which unfortunately wasn t enough to reach the semi-finals. Some great performances and goals were scored by Ioan, Elis and Steffan. CROSS COUNTRY On Saturday 21st April the cross country team were at Coleg Cymeunedol Y Dderwen for the final scoring Bridgend Schools event. Mental Health Awareness Month now occurs once a year and is an essential reminder that we Chris Elmore Shows His Support For Helen s Law Ogmore MP, Chris Elmore, has demonstrated his support for Helen s Law at an event in Parliament. Following Helen McCourt s murder, her killer was imprisoned but never revealed where her body was disposed of. Since then, Helen s mother, Marie McCourt has campaigned for the law to be changed to prevent criminals who do not show remorse from being released from prison. Mr Elmore commented: No parent should ever have to go must always do more to raise awareness of mental health issues and encourage people to speak out. 1 in 4 of us will suffer from a mental health condition within any given year. This shocking statistic shows that this issue affects us all. We will all know somebody who is suffering, or has previously suffered from, a form of mental health condition, whether or not they have made us aware of it. Suicide is the biggest killer of men in the UK under the age of 45 and, across the UK, female suicides are at their highest for a decade. For me, these alarming trends are a stark reminder that we must redouble our efforts to tackle mental health and the stigma which too often surrounds these issues. These trends are through what Marie has had to go through. I fully support the introduction of this law. There is a fine balance in our justice system between protecting the rights of victims and promoting rehabilitation but there must be give and take: criminals who do not show remorse for such heinous crimes should not be released. Helen McCourt was only 22 when she was murdered in 1988 and the bill has received the backing of over 340,000 people online. Mr Elmore continued: Taking a life is one of the most unspeakable crimes possible. To then not show remorse or have the dignity to disclose to the family what happened to their loved one is simply evil. WATCH BATTERIES Come to us for.. Behind every number is a person s life: their past, present and future. When you add to this the network of people who love and care for this individual, each case really is a tragedy beyond all proportion. There are no easy answers to this problem. A great deal of progress has been made in recent years to begin to break down the stigma which surrounds mental health problems to allow people to feel more able to discuss any problems that they may be suffering with in silence. This work has largely been undertaken by a charities who are highly committed to tackling the root causes of these problems as well as their effects. 10 Llanharan Community Council Hi All My last act as Chair for 2017/2018 was to present a bouquet of flowers and a card signed by all the members of the Council to Iris Smith, an exresident of Llanharan who was celebrating her 100th birthday on the 17 May. It was a humbling experience to meet Iris and I thank her family for making me so welcome to their celebrations. Iris had lived in Llanharan for 96 years in Pendre Crescent. What a remarkable lady she proved to be. Prior to that I was privileged to attend the 40th anniversary celebrations of the opening of Llanharan OAP Hall. It was a magnificent event, in which I along with Cllr. Geraint Hopkins and others started off the celebrations by dancing (if you could call it that!) around a Maypole to the tune of the Floral Dance. An experience not to be forgotten! My thanks to the Association s Secretary, Gill Richards for the invitation. Annual General Meeting: I was honoured to have been elected to continue as Chair of the Council for 2018/19. Cllr Sarah Liney was elected as Vice Chair and may I take this opportunity on behalf of the Council to thank Cllr Roger Turner for his work as Vice Chair during the last year. Committees for 2018/19 1. Allotments, Footpaths and Open Spaces Cllrs M Thomas (Chairman), J Williams (Vice Chairman), D Evans, C Parker, W Thomas and R Turner plus 4 co-opted members (1 representative from each of the three allotment sites) and Mr M Steer (representing footpath issues) 2. Llanharan Community Development Project Councillors Aksin and Geraint Hopkins 2. One Voice Wales Local and Larger Councils Committees Councillor Parker The other decisions taken at the AGM were: 1. Youth Representatives Scot Russell was elected. (There is a vacancy for another Youth Representative. Anyone between the ages of 16 to 25 may apply please contact the Clerk for details) 2. School Governing Bodies The following were nominated to continue has the Minor Authority Governors: Cllr G Hopkins Llanharan Primary School; Cllr Chris Parker - Brynnau Primary School; Cllr Maria Thomas Dolau Primary School 3. Remuneration to Members: It was decided to follow the recommendations of the Independent Remuneration Panel in respect of: making a payment of 1500 to the Chair to cover the additional expenditure incurred carrying out the extra duties expected of the Chair and making payments where necessary to members to cover the cost of child/dependent care costs whilst attending Council business. 4. Renew its Membership of One Voice Wales: and cover the cost of the Clerk s membership of the Society of Local Council Clerks at a cost of 1081 and 170, respectively. 5. Location of Meetings: to continue with its current pattern of holding the ordinary/special and committee meetings in Llanharan Miners Welfare Hall except for one ordinary meeting per year that will be held at Ynysmaerdy Community Centre. Other Business: Development of the Innovation House Site: At a special meeting held on the 10 May the council responded to the developer s proposals that consideration should be given to the following: (a) The provision of a Puffin Crossing the lack of play facilities on the proposed development would mean that children would have to cross the very busy Bridgend Road the nearest play facility is directly across the road. The local children also would have to catch buses to secondary schools and again this means crossing a busy road as well as local residents using public transport. A crossing would help to facilitate this and assist children attending the school and residents who must cross the road to go to the local shop, where at present, the shop keeper has to stop the traffic flow to assist customers across the road. (b) Height of the Flats It is considered that the height of the flats should be restricted to 2 storeys rather than 3. (c) The lack of green space and improved landscaping for the whole site, including substantial hedging, trees and larger trees. (d) Parking provision within the development there is an assumption that social housing requires less parking provision. The adjoining development clearly indicates that this is not the case and the Council urges that the normal standards of car parking provision should be applied. (e) The Boundary Adjoining residents have concerns that the retaining wall at the rear of their properties might be compromised by the new residential development this must be considered and addressed. Also, the Council asks that a secure boundary fence is constructed along the boundary with the allotments (f) Capacity for Schools and Local Surgery a new development will have an impact on this provision (g) Noise and construction dust these must be addressed in any planning approval, to ensure that there is not a repeat of the last development (h) Construction Traffic restrictions need to be applied regarding weekend working and restricted access to the site particularly at school attendance and home times we would suggest no construction traffic between the hours of 8am to 9.30am and 3pm and 4pm. British Legion Llanharan Branch: It was a privilege to attend the Royal British Legion s Area awards event which was hosted by the Llanharan Branch at the Rugby Club. The event was attend by members from branches from as far as Maesteg and Penarth. The Llanharan Branch came 2nd in the award for the most increase in Poppy Collection and two stalwarts of the branch received recognition of their service to the branch, namely Leighton Harris and Kenwyn Bailey. Medical Facilities in Llanharan: The Community Council has received a report from the joint working group of Cwm Taf Health Board and AMBU Health Board. They have in, with input from the respective Community Health Councils arrived at the conclusion that there are enough resources between Pencoed Medical Centre and the New Surgery to meet current and the expected increase in demand that the Llanilid development will bring. However, the report recognizes that those resources are current not being exploited to their full potential. Incentives have been offered (in particular to Pencoed Medical Centre) to realign those resources to meet that demand but such offers have not yet been taken up at the time of writing this article. The Community Council is not content with this position and will continue to press for a better solution that will meet the ever-expanding needs of the community. Memorial Garden: This area has now been tidied up by the Council s handyman. My thanks to Mark for the excellent job he has done. The clerk is still pursuing BT to remove the unsightly disused telephone box as well. The council has plans renovate the area to make a more please feature which will incorporate some off-street parking facility. Outline plans are currently being drawn up and consultation will take place with neighbouring residents before any permanent works take place. Bus Shelters: Repairs have been carried out to the bus shelter at the bottom of Llanharry Road. The shelter opposite Brynnau Primary School will be replaced shortly, the new one has been ordered and the Council is awaiting delivery. Meadow Rise open spaces: A plan has been drawn up of the propose layout of the spaces which will involve hedge Council Tax Support Do You Qualify? Ogmore Assembly Member and Welsh Government Minister Huw Irranca-Davies is urging Ogmore residents to check if they may be entitled to any possible Council Tax discounts and reductions. As Council Tax demands drop through the letterboxes of homes across the county boroughs of Bridgend and Rhondda Cynon Taf, households could be missing out on reductions. Our Welsh Labour Government and a host of charities have joined together to make people more aware of the range of support available to help them pay their Council Tax bills. You may be entitled to pay less council tax if: you believe you live on a low-income you live alone, or with people / children who do not pay council tax planting and the creation of an orchard. The change from winter to summer is anticipated to take place towards the end of June. Annual Accounts: The Council s External Auditor had appointed the 9 July for interested parties to make any representations or ask questions about the Council s 2017/18 accounts. There are many discounts, reductions and exemptions available and these are all listed on the Welsh Government s new website. A few minutes of your time, could mean significant savings to your outgoings. I would encourage everyone to check the website to see whether they could be paying less council tax. 12 Royal British Legion Llanharan Branch Branch members are heavily committed in the long term planning and preparation of events well into the future. Foremost is the hosting of the prestigious District Presentation evening, which was held on Friday 18th May, preparations for which went well, and details of which will be published in the next issue of this journal. Arrangements for a bumper double occurrence for the 9th November too, are already being discussed. The Branch will be displaying it s banner at The Royal Mint that morning alongside the Goat Major of the Royal Welsh and his newly trained goat mascot. It is hoped we will be joined by a military presence in similar fashion to the Gurkhas on parade last year. On that evening at our Llanharan base we shall present a super concert to mark the 100 year anniversary of the ending of WW1. After a dignified service, local children will show their talents with relevant wartime items. Following this, there will be live entertainment and a surprise presentation, if all goes well. During 5th 9th August, Branch Standard Bearer, David Jenkins, and I are to be present at the Menin Gate Great Pilgrimage. The march past will be observed by civic and military guests from the UK, Commonwealth and countries of Northern Europe. Wreath laying by VIPs will take place on Wednesday 8th August. Nigel Ferris will take a small party to Sandhurst (date to be announced) to witness a Full Dress Rehearsal of the Sovereign s Parade. Cadets from all over the world, many of them sons of princes and Arab States dignitaries will rehearse for the passing out parade. Onlookers will enjoy the established traditional sight of the adjutant, seated on a white horse, mounting the steps of the academy to the building entrance. They will also enjoy a refreshing libation in the Sergeant s Mess at the end of formalities. Long serving stalwarts Kenwyn Bailey and Leighton Harries were unable to attend our last meeting and we missed their company. It was good to see Councillor Jeff Williams in our midst. His testing contributions and questioning with Llanharan events foremost are always direct and searching in substance. The talk for May s meeting was given by our guest speaker Janet Young on Anne Boleyn.Everyone really enjoyed the talk and how much we learned about her very short life with only 3 years of that on the throne but with a very key role in the political and religious upheaval that was the start of English reformation. Janet was an excellent story teller and kept us all enthralled about Anne Boleyn life. Our competition was all about jewellery, some beautiful pieces were entered, all hoping to win for those extra points towards a prize at the end of the year. Next month s competition is a photo of your garden which should be beautiful at this time of year. This all ties in nicely with our guest speaker Kevin Thomas talk on The Summer Garden. 13 A Talbot Boy Continuing the modest memoir of a period of the life of John Lobb. PART THREE: MY RAF AND COURTING YEARS Chapter 16: Mozart and the Mouse a Transatlantic Tail! Act One: Barbara, the Love of my Life Barbara, in this story, was destined to be my wife. We first met when she came for an interview with my father for a job, having applied for a temporary position as a shop assistant in our delicatessen. I believe she was working at the time for a very old Cardiff department store called Marments and had applied for the position as a confectionery manager at the Capital Theatre, Cardiff. She had been offered this job for double her present salary, but the position would not start for some five or six weeks. My father, on seeing this attractive, smartly dressed young woman, agreed to take her on for the short period whilst awaiting the Capital Theatre job. Naturally I was very interested to see this temporary addition to our staff and was somewhat bowled over when we met. She was very good at any job presented to her and the period of time working in our deli flew by. I had moved on girlfriends-wise and I never took the opportunity to go out with Barbara. As the boss s son, it should have been a walk in the park, maybe or perhaps not! Many months later, myself and a close friend of mine, Jeff Retter, went to the Capital Theatre to see the popular film of the time. I can t recall the film, but I do recall meeting up with Barbara once more. She was managing the confectionery kiosks, usherettes and the ice cream and drink girls who stood at the front of the theatre during the intervals. This meeting in the Cap that evening was the starting point of a wonderful life together, courting, engagement and subsequently a wonderful, happy marriage that lasted over 54 years. As I have said, Barbara was the love of my life. Act Two: Phoenix Bob, the American Millionaire Before we get to the heart of this tale, the Mozart and Mouse, I must tell another related story which, even now, I have difficulty in believing INDOOR GARAGE SALE The Eagle Pub, Brynna CF72 9QH Saturday 9th June 10am - 4pm Sunday 10th June 10am - 4pm EVERYTHING MUST GO Tel: Your Furniture Recovered......for less than you think Choice of fabrics, FREE Estimates Also a Mobile Upholstery Repair Service Broken Springs, Broken Rails, Replacement Seat & Back Cushions Malcolm Bird Tel: or C&L Garden & Tree Services passionate about beautiful gardens All aspects of garden work undertaken Trees Felled & Lopped Garden Fencing & Decking Hedges Trimmed Overgrown Gardens Cleared Drives & Patios Cleaned Fascia Cleaning Quality Work Guaranteed Jobs Big or Small Fully qualified Call Chris on / really happened. Barbara and I had been married some 20 years or so and were taking a holiday in one of our favourite hotels in Majorca in the small, exclusive beach resort of Illetas, half way between Palma and Palma Nova. The hotel was the De Mar, managed by Sefior Sanchez. It was our third visit and, as usual, the room he gave us was superb, overlooking a small estuary with the King of Spain s gunboat at anchor, ostensibly to protect the royal family who were enjoying their summer holidays in residence in their white, Majorcan vacation palace, situated on the opposite bank of the inlet. The crew of the gunboat were keeping a constant watch with binoculars for anything out of the ordinary in their protection duties. Naturally, this was too good a photo opportunity for me to miss. I therefore put the longest telephoto lens on my Leica camera and proceeded to film the summer palace, the crew of the gunboat and the odd members of the family that would appear on the balconies. That was until I noticed that the Spanish marines had manned an anti aircraft gun and were pointing the barrel at my telephoto lens. I immediately put the camera down and called down to them from our balcony, Sorry, it s only a camera! Nevertheless, l had my scoop! During our very pleasant stay at the De Mar, an exclusive coach tour of some 30 or so well-heeled, voluble Americans arrived, like a millionaires bus trip. They were doing Europe three days in France, three days in Spain, three days in Italy and three days in Majorca and were an extremely jolly crowd. Each evening at dinner in the hotel we were pleasantly railroaded as guests to their private dining room to partake of the gourmet spread which each five-star hotel on this five-star luxury plane, boat, train and bus bonanza put on, inclusive of wines with each course, of course. Barbara was somewhat reluctant at first to attend all of the three gourmet dinners, yet she got into the swing of it, helped by the superb food and wonderful wines on offer. On the second evening, each guest was asked if they had had any amusing or embarrassing encounters. My turn came to stand and relate my story. Liberally lubricated with fine wine, I commenced to relate the story of Mozart and Mouse. Needless to say, it was a riotous success, ensuring we were féted as guests of honour at the last and final American gourmet dinner. The next day, waving good day to this boisterous group as they proceeded on their European extravaganza, we were mightily relieved to be able to relax for the rest of our holiday, thinking we would never meet up again with such a happy, noisy, jolly crowd. I usually have to spend a lot of time researching musty old manuscripts and dusty documents for these articles, but this time it was a lot easier doing straight forward interviews and looking up what has already been written about Llanharry Mine by others over the past sixty years. One of the best articles I re-discovered was the one entitled Mine without Malice by the late Mr. Harry Lewis, the old Llantrisant Observer local correspondent. It was reproduced in my book The Border Vale of Glamorgan by kind permission of the newspaper. It was a well written account that coincided with the closing of the mine in the summer of a sad blow to Llanharry village that had possessed iron in its soul for centuries. I used this article as a starting point, followed this up with four interviews and then returned to my own archives to see what I myself had found. It then struck me that before dealing with the 20th century mine that had begun production some time between 1901 and 1910 I should devote a short paragraph to the earlier mining ventures in the parish that included the Romans, the Elizabethans and the Victorians. In 1859 a writer claimed to have found some old workings near Llechau Farm that he claimed were Roman in origin. Not far away in 1967 a shard from the rim of a Roman cooking pot was found at Redlands in the garden of Mr. Edgar Maggs the then agent of the Llanharry Haematite Mine. Finally, some pieces of coarse Roman pottery was found at the bottom of an ancient stall working at Ty Isaf Farm. The Elizabethan Iron Master Robert Sidney was the next industrialist to be lured by the rich red rocks of the neighbourhood. Sidney had acquired the manor of Llanharry by marriage and was able to exploit the deposits of ore by digging shallow shafts of a mere 30 feet and then smelting it on the spot. Sidney also mined the coal deposits on Llanharry Meadow at the same time. Finally, there was a dramatic growth in the production of iron in the second half of the 19th century. After a number of trial shafts being sunk at the Patch Mine some 6,000 tons were raised partly by open cast methods. At the same time there was a tramline linking the iron mine to the railway and to a Coal Mine on Llanharry Meadow, which may have been run by the same company. Mining fizzled out at the Patch by the 1870s, but, the name, a Cornish one, still survives today. By far the greatest production of iron at Llanharry occurred in the late 1870s when a large pocket of ore amounting to 120,000 tons was discovered at Trecastle. I am not absolutely sure whether this Trecastle Mine was linked to the Ty dy Mine nearby. The Trecastle Mine outlasted even the important Mwyndy operations and lasted until 1891, when it was forced to close mainly due to competition from Spanish ores. There was no further production in the parish until operations began in 1901 at the mine near Llechau Farm that is the subject of this article. Not too much is known about the opening of the 20th century mine, but from what I ve been able to discover the early operations were very much of an exploratory nature with instant success at finding the iron not guaranteed and the Cardiff Haematite Iron Ore Company at the time under funded. According to Harry Lewis article there was an abortive effort to locate the iron a few years before But the above named company called in a Captain William Dingle, a Cornishman with experience of gold mining in Africa, to assist in locating the vast iron deposits and following his advice a 300 feet shaft was sunk 300 yards north of that of the former group. I cannot prove this story, but I do know that a William Dingle was made the first Manager of the Mine. I think I have discovered who Captain Dingle was.the term Captain is a Cornish term for a mining boss and William Dingle was indeed a Cornish man, being a native of St. Austell. He and his wife Jane came to South Wales about continued overleaf... 18 1860 and by the 1880s they were living in Mwyndy, near Pontyclun. He is likely to be the Mr. Dingle, who narrowly escaped death or serious injury at the Mwyndy Iron Mine, where he was employed as an Iron Mine Agent. There is a photograph of Captain Dingle in Mr. Harry Lewis article and he was also present at the cutting of the first sod at the 1901 mine as shown in the photograph of the ceremony published in my Border Vale of Glamorgan on page 47. The lady with the spade in this photograph is likely to have been Miss Elizabeth Griffiths, a member of the Coed Park family who were then the Lords of Llanharry Manor. Readers may like to know that two more members of Captain Dingle s family were closely connected with the Llanharry Mine. Dingle s son William and grandson Howard were both winding engine men there for many years. As regards the Cardiff Haematite Iron Ore Company I was interested to find that as well as the local directors, two iron masters Illtyd Williams of Middlesbrough and James Campbell of Durham are mentioned. In 1901 the first shaft was sunk to the depth of 120 feet, but by 1904 the mine was closed down probably because it was not deep enough. However, by 1910 when sufficient capital (always a problem in the early days of the mine) was raised Shaft 2 was sunk and the regular production of iron ore began. This continued apart from one small closure until The mine prospered greatly during the years of the First World War with new plant and equipment being installed to meet the greater demand for iron. About 54,000 tons of iron were brought to the surface by the end of the war, but then a post war slump set in and the company went into liquidation. Fortunately, a new company The Glamorgan Haematite Iron Ore Company was formed and was able to weather the storms of the General Strike in 1926 and the Wall Street Crash of 1929, although the pit did close briefly in Much of the credit for the mine s continuing success during the interwar years and later must belong to Mr. Stuart Martin of Pantaquesta near Miskin. His father Henry had probably been a member of William Dingle s original syndicate. Stuart took over the management of the mine on behalf of the Glamorgan Haematitie Company and when his father died he became its Chairman. Ynysmaerdy Community Centre The Centre has a stage for performances, a generous size hall, soft play for children and access to kitchen facilities. Older miners have told me that Mr. Stuart Martin was an accomplished horseman, took part in local race meetings and thought nothing of riding over to Llanharry Mine on horseback. His optimism was certainly justified just before the war started because the mine had become a hive of activity by 1938 with some 400 men being employed there. Production naturally soared during the war and its aftermath. The mine was able to assist the village in other ways during hostilities for the Patch Drift near the centre of Llanharry was utilised by the public as its major air raid shelter. Not everyone however chose to use it on account of it being so cold and damp! It is hard to believe that immediately after the War there was an acute labour shortage, so between 1948 and 1952 foreign labour was employed with first Poles and then Italians finding work there. Soon names like Janda, Olkovic. Alzetta, Coco and Morelli appeared in the village, some like Massemo Alzetta were to settle in Llanharry for good. I used to meet the Alzetta brothers regularly in Prospect House (Maggie s Shop) when I was a Sixth Form student. Here we played darts, sipped pop and exchanged information about our respective countries. I picked up a smattering of Italian and was flattered to be asked to the Junior School by Head Teacher Mr. Glyn Morgan to show a little Italian boy, who spoke no English, around the premises on his first day. By the mid 1960s the mine was producing 2,600 tons of ore a week and sending the high quality iron to the East Moors Furnaces in Cardiff. A small amount of yellow ochre was also dispatched to the paint industry. There was an ancient ochre quarry in Llanharrry situated in the lane to Llwyn Barcud that coincidently was also used as an air raid shelter! The Llanharry Mine s prospect in the 60s looked good, but it was beginning to be rumoured that it was no longer viable. This was partly due to limited reserves that were becoming more inaccessible. By the early 1970s the writing was on the wall, but it was still a time of great sadness when the mine eventually closed in the summer of Llanharry had lost its biggest claim to fame as having the only iron mine in Wales, and its closure dealt a near mortal blow to the economy of the village that was to last for years. Mr. Harry Lewis in his literary epitaph encapsulated the mood of regret and nostalgia for the passing of the old mine and for the men whose destinies were entwined with it for most of their lives. He missed the banter in the bath house, the chaffing in the changing rooms, the rattle of locomotives, trams and boring machines as well as the relaxed atmosphere between the men and the bosses and amongst the men themselves.
