I will have details of our Christmas Celebrations in next month s article. Armistice This year we are celebrating 100 years since the end of World War 1 and we will be marking this occasion with a Remembrance Service in the village followed by an event for all ages to attend. Immediately after the service there will be a street party. Wartime Fancy Dress is encouraged and we ask people to bring something for the street party which can be shared. Charity Night at the Golf Club I would like to congratulate the Llantrisant and Pontyclun Golf Club Captain, Ian Kemp for the charity night at the club which raised over 1,500 for the Bro Morgannwg Baby loss support group. It was a well attended night with excellent food and entertainment all in aid of a good cause. Leekes I would just like to let residents know that preapplication consultation has been launched by Leekes which is looking to demolish their existing store and build a new smaller store in its place, along with another general retail Chris Elmore Says Thank You To First World War Generation The Royal British Legion has launched a movement to say Thank You to all who served, sacrificed, and changed our world during the First World War. This year is the centenary of the end of the First World War and the charity is calling on mass involvement from the public to recognise the legacy left to us by the entire First World War generation. Thank You honours not only the 1.1 million British and Commonwealth Armed Forces who lost their lives in the First World War, but also those who played their part on the home front, and those who returned to build a better life for the benefit of generations to come. Chris Elmore said I was pleased to visit the Royal British Legion s stand at Labour Party conference to hear about their work leading unit and a food unit for a supermarket such as Aldi. This is pre planning consultation and no planning application has currently been submitted, however you can see the proposal at www. geraintjohnplanning.co.uk and you have until the 12th November to express your opinions to them directly not the council at this stage. Get in touch: The council itself should be your first port of call to report issues on , or online at rctcbc.gov.uk/en/contactus/ Reportit.aspx. If you contact me by phone and there is no answer then please leave a message so I can get back to you or report the issue. My contact details are: Cllr. Stephen Powell 18 Talbot Close Talbot Green CF72 8AS up to the centenary of the end of the First World War. To the farmers who gave up their horses to the war effort; to the women who kept our home fires burning; to the Sassoons and the McCraes whose work has shaped our understanding of conflict; we should indeed say Thank You. I am saying Thank You to all those who have, and are, serving in our armed forces. Heroes one and all. Charles Byrne, Director General of The Royal British Legion, said: We all have a connection to the First World War, for me it is Private Ross Ryan, my grandfather, and we all have a reason to say Thank You to this special generation. Whether your personal Thank You is an event dedicated to those who made a difference in your community, a visit to a place of significance, or a simple tweet, there s no limit to the ways people can take part. We are making a plea to every single person across the UK to get involved and take a moment in this very significant year to say Thank You.

A huge thank you goes out to all those who were involved in making the Miskin Mill Grand Firework a tremendous success in previous years this was certainly one of my favourite displays to attend. Keeping Children Safe Please note that as of September there is now a camera van in operation and controlling the streets outside schools. At 6.30 I will give a short talk on 1918, with film exerts. I aim to provoke a discussion by arguing that the war and the peace treaty were avoidable disasters that shaped so many of the catastrophes of the following 100 years Hitler, Iraq, Syria, Palestine, the Balkans, the Irish Border, Brexit. It also heralded so many of our achievements including votes for women and working men. Come along and give your point of view. The event is free. Tickets are available at the Library but you are welcome without tickets. Sunday 11 November Remembrance Services am at the War Memorials in Pontyclun and Miskin with a service at St Paul s Church at 9.30 am. Monday 12 November Afternoon Tea At 2.30 pm in Café 50 there will be an afternoon tea. A few tickets are still available from Tara at the Community Centre Office. Monday 19 November U3A At 1 pm in the Community Centre Talygarn Resident, Peter Cox will give a talk on My Life as a Spy. He will trace the British Intelligence Service back to the First World War. Peter s talk will be preceded by a lunch prepared with recipes of The October U3A meeting was addressed by Dr Ritchie Wood who gave a brilliantly illustrated talk on the role of women in the First World War as they worked on the battlefield, in the police service, in the factories and on the farms. We learned how after the war women were told by the Government, the newspapers, the trade unions and even by aristocratic leadership of the suffragettes to get back into their homes and kitchens. Giles Gallery and Pontyclun Library From the end of October Giles Gallery is hosting an exhibition of lithographs commissioned by the British Government in 1917 to improve morale among the war weary. In Pontyclun Library there will lithographs showing the work of women and men at home and at war. Saturday 24 November Songs, Poems and Pints At 7.30 pm at the Athletic Club there will be an evening when all of Pontyclun s finest musicians, singers, choristers and poets are coming together to enjoy an evening of remembering Anyone who misses this evening will regret it! It will be great fun as well as poignant. Tickets, 5, are available from me, from the Community Council Offices and from community Cllr Mike Davies who is organising this event. Saturday 1 December Pontyclun Christmas Festival On 1 December, starting at 12 noon, there will be a Christmas Market inside the Pontyclun Athletic Club, organised by our wonderful local Macmillan Fund Raising Group. Local traders and crafters will be able to sell you every Christmas gift you can imagine. In the car park of the Athletic Club there will be fairground rides, provided by Tommy Smith, and every variety of food stall you could wish for. There will be an outdoor music stage, funded by the Community Council, with festive music from the choirs of Pontyclun Primary School and YGGG Llantrisant, Callenig folk band, the RCT woodwind band, the Ukeladies band, Cantorian Pontyclun and the pantomime cast of St Paul s Players. Pontyclun s Christmas lights will be turned on at 5.30, after which the music stage will rock! The lights are funded by the Community Council.. Trains Train users will have noticed that Transport for Wales, backed by Welsh Government and Keolis Amey, is now providing our trains. We wish them well and look forward to the promised newer and bigger trains arriving over the next few years as well as a more frequent Sunday service. I spoke at the Conference in Cardiff which launched the new service. I argued hard that it was not good enough to continue with just one train an hour at the Pontyclun, Llanharan and Pencoed stations when almost all other stations in South Wales would have two or four or six trains an hour. With this inadequate service Pontyclun residents often feel forced to add to the road congestion around Junction 34. Llanharan and Pontyclun Labour members have met to consider a joint way forward. We will be meeting with Assembly Members, MP s and Ministers. We will be asking for your support as we campaign for more trains. Walking Football / Rugby The Community Council is working with Cwm Taf Local Health Board and our local sporting clubs to bring funding into Pontyclun to support more active life styles. We are looking to see how many people in the area would be interested in taking part in Walking Football or Walking Rugby. These fast growing sports are ideal ways to improve your health and make friends. All ages, men and women, and all abilities can take part. If you are interested please contact Tara, the Café 50 Coordinator, who is organising this, on or by at clerk@pontyclun-cc. gov.wales Weekly Councillor Surgery Margaret Griffiths and Paul Griffiths hold a weekly surgery each Tuesday from 9 am to 9.45 at Pontyclun Library to cover all issues relating to RCT Council and Pontyclun Community Council. It has been a difficult time for us all, but with everyone pulling together we have managed to get though this disruption and many thanks to RCT school transportation, for maintaining a fluid service throughout. WAR MEMORIAL The war memorial will be unveiled on Remembrance Sunday which is a poignant time as it is the 100th anniversary of the end of The Great War. There will be a service to commemorate this momentous occasion. Please come and support this, and pay your respects to the families of those in the community, who made the ultimate sacrifice. BOUNDARY CHANGES Llanharry Community Council has a petition in Llanharry News concerning these changes. The proposed changes will take Tyla Garw into Pontyclun and make Tea & Cakes at the Senedd for Macmillan s Coffee Morning Macmillan Cancer Support were at the Senedd to promote their flagship fundraising event, the World s Biggest Coffee Morning. Ogmore Assembly Member Huw Irranca-Davies was one of the many supporters who attended the event to help promote and highlight that the Macmillan Coffee Mornings are upon us and being held throughout many towns and communities over the next few days. It s the 28th year of Coffee Morning and the Ogmore AM enjoyed a cuppa and a cupcake at the awareness event. Bronwen, Macmillan s cancer information and Pontyclun a three councillor ward. Our proposal, which we have sent to the boundary commission of Wales, is that Brynsadler with Tylagarn should be incorporated into Llanharry Community Council, thus enabling Tyla Garw to remain part of the Llanharry ward. Should our proposal be ratified, Llanharry would become a two councillor ward. support bus which was designed especially for Wales was also parked near the iconic building. Following the event, Mr Irranca-Davies said: The Macmillan Coffee Mornings are a firm favourite event for many offering a warm welcome and friendship via a cup of tea and tasty cakes, all whilst raising money for a worthy cause. We are told that one in three people will get cancer, and this hateful disease can affect every aspect of a person s life, from their day-to-day living and relationships to their finances and mental health. Well done to Macmillan for the work they do in helping people during these difficult circumstances and I m always happy to support and promote the World s Biggest Coffee Morning and Macmillan Cancer Support. Look out for a coffee morning near you LLANHARRY COMMUNITY CENTRE The recent proposal of transferring Llanharry Community Centre from RCT Council, has been placed on hold, pending the outcome of the boundary changes. If these changes take place, Llanharry Community Council will lose between 25-30% of their budget every year. This is a decision that we feel Richard Pugh, Head of Services for Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales, commented: It s great to see Assembly Members supporting Macmillan in Wales and we d like to thank Huw for his support. With the number of people living with cancer in Wales expected to reach around 240,000 by 2030, demand for Macmillan s services is constantly growing, but we rely on the generosity of the public to provide this support. Last year in Wales, we raised just over 1.2 million pounds which just shows what a wonderful, generous nation we are in Wales. We re hoping to equal if not beat that fabulous total this year. We re really must wait until we have more clarification on the issue. LLANHARRY AND TYLA GARW FIREWORK DISPLAY The Llanharry and Tyla Garw firework display will be held on Saturday 3rd November at 5.30 pm at Llanharry Park. This event has been organised by Llanharry and Tyla Garw Community association. Wayne Owen County Borough Councillor pleased that Bronwen our information and support bus was parked outside the Pierhead Building. It was a great opportunity for AMs to explore the bus which has been designed specifically for Wales. Bronwen makes such a positive impact on the communities she visits. We re immensely proud of Bronwen and her team and look forward to continuing to build on her success.

The lounge was comfortably full when I, as chair of the Watch, got to my feet to welcome everyone. The focal point, of course, was the superb Harvest table which had an abundance of fruit, vegetables, flowers, cakes, wines and spirits on display. My thanks to all those members who donated so generously. As is customary the evening started with the singing of the Harvest hymn We plough the fields and scatter. This was followed by a general knowledge quiz and picture quiz which was well received by everyone present. After a close contest the eventual winners by one point were the Eaglets whose team included Martin, John, Kevin, Helen and Caroline. Congratulations! [see photograph] There were joint winners of Guess The Weight of the Marrow Competition who were Amanda Nealon and Dennis Cracknell. They both guessed that the weight of the marrow was 46lb compared to the actual weight of 45.98lb. They couldn t have been closer if they had brought their own weighing scales. Normally the winner would receive the giant marrow however thanks to the generosity of our donor Bernard Vowles an extra marrow was provided so that both the winners went away happy. A chicken dinner was the first prize in the raffle and the happy winner was Paul Sayer. Then it was time for the auction of all the produce on display. There was standing room only in the lounge when the first bunch of flowers went up for auction. As the auctioneer can I thank everyone for their participation as the bidding was brisk throughout which made my life much easier. Taking everything into account the total monies raised on the night was Absolutely Winning Quiz team with their Bar Voucher first prize. Tremendous! My thanks go out to everyone for making the evening such a special one. Next up for the watch will be their AGM which will be sometime in November. Members will be notified of the date in the next week or so. Please make every effort to attend. RECYCLING Since the introduction of the council s new recycling strategy in June, whereby no black bag side waste is permitted for those households with the smaller 120 wheelie bin, there are positive signs that recycling is on the increase. The percentage rate for recycling by RCT council in June this year stood at 64.1% and the Welsh Government Target for 2024/25 is 70% so we have some way to go. Generally speaking my ward is playing its part with the vast majority of households recycling conscientiously. However there is one area where I would like to see a better participation and that is the recycling of food waste. Let me be clear, I am only concerned with those households who at present are disposing of their food waste via their wheelie bins. I am pleased to say that within the next week or so the Council s Awareness team will be in the area to offer assistance and encourage households to recycle their food waste. Also, if I can be of any help to you please feel free to contact me my or telephone both of which are included within. By working together we can achieve so much. Remember of course food waste recycling is collected weekly whereas food waste deposited into your wheelie bin could be there for a fortnight before it is picked up. It was way back in 2008 when the Brynna Ward was asked by RCT council to pioneer food waste recycling in the borough. Needless to say that exercise, thanks to you the residents, turned out to be a huge success which convinced the council to introduce the service to all 100,000 households in RCT. My wish now is for all households in Brynna, Bryncae and Llanilid to lead the way once again by ensuring none of our food waste goes into our wheelie bins but instead is recycled. Just as a recap here are the items which can be recycled through the council s food waste initiative: Fruit, vegetables, meat, fish cooked and uncooked food, leftover food, egg shells, bread, pasta, cereal, rice, tea bags, bones, coffee grounds, chip paper, cream cake boxes, pizza boxes and pet food. In anticipation of your support, Happy recycling! SCHOOL NEWS BRYNNAU PRIMARY SCHOOL DOSBARTH AUR & ARIAN The children in Dosbarth Arian are currently enjoying working with local artist Cheryl Beer on a Young Promoters project. Both classes have been bringing in WW2 artefacts as part of their topic and are thoroughly enjoying extending their knowledge. DOSBARTH EFYDD & GLAS The children love the topic Blue Abyss. So far the children have gathered lots of shells and have created 3D sea life artwork and created bookmarks to show the different layers of the ocean and sea life. They have also been working hard on their personification poems and are about to start investigating how to keep the teachers tea warm during the cold winter months. DOSBARTH GWYRDD & MELYN The children have enjoyed learning about the planets in our solar system and have created rhymes to help them remember the order in which the planets are located from the sun. As part of their investigations they have researched spaceships and astronauts in order to design efficient travel and space clothing. So far they have tested materials to see which are waterproof and which would keep an astronaut warm. PSCO Lauren and PCSO Sam came into class and shared the results of the forensic report on the alien discovery in the woods. Whilst PCSO Lauren and Sam were in the class they showed the children how to take fingerprints. Thank you PCSO Lauren, the children had a wonderful time. DOSBARTH ENFYS The children have been very busy helping Plaps the star find all his star friends. They have played star hide and seek in Brynnau woods and have helped Plaps rescue his friends from the sticky space dust and slime. Plaps has challenged the children to twinkle and glow just like little stars so we are currently planning a glowtastic glow party before half term. The children have written invitations and investigated which drinks glow the brightest in preparation for the party. The children have had lots of fun creating dark dens, exploring with UV torches and making edible neon stars! Now the children are excited to discover Plap s next challenge and there are rumours that it could involve flying up to space.. The school was well represented with a lot of children turning up to run who have competed before and new faces joining this year. The Year 6 girls did amazingly well with a 3rd place and a 5th place. The new Year 3 children also ran well and it is hoped to see more of them at the other events. Next race is on the 20th October at Brynteg Comprehensive. LLANGRANNOG During the last weekend in September, the year 5 and 6 pupils in the Welsh department were lucky enough to go on a trip to Llangrannog. The trip was a great opportunity for them to socialise with other children from the locality and to challenge themselves in comfortable and slightly less comfortable scenarios. They enjoyed skiing, horse riding, high ropes and many other fun activities! The pupils had a great time, but there were some very heavy eyes in school on Monday especially the teachers! MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING On Friday 28th September Dolau Primary held a coffee morning for the pupils to raise money for Macmillan. The charity raises money to support individuals and their families living with cancer. The staff kindly donated delicious cupcakes for the pupils to enjoy. A total of 256 was raised and everyone enjoyed a chat and a slice of cake! Thank you to everyone who supported the coffee morning. NURSERY WELCOME MEETING During one lovely evening in October, the children of Dosbarth 1, Class 1 and Class 2 were invited to a fun evening provided by the PTA. It was so lovely to meet our super new pupils and parents of Dolau. A rather yummy buffet was also enjoyed. We are hoping that you all enjoyed and will continue to provide support to our hard working PTA. Diolch APPOINTMENT OF NEW CHAIRPERSONS At the Autumn Governing Body Meetings of Brynnau Primary and Ysgol Dolau Councillor Chris Parker and Simon Poole respectively were nominated and appointed as the new chairs for the academic year 2018/19. My very best wishes go to them both. As a fellow governor at both schools I can assure them of my full support. PLAY AREA UPGRADE Its good to report that the works at the play area situated at Brynna Recreational Fields are now complete. The first reactions from children and adults alike are that they are more than happy with the upgrade. On reflection, I am glad that I listened to parents who advised me to have a Zip Wire ride installed there as this facility is, without a doubt, one of the children s favourites. 9 Llanharan Community Council Hi All Remembrance Day: The large poppies have been purchased and are currently being inscribed with individual names and details. They will then be add to lampposts throughout the community. My thanks to Joanne Miller of Brynna for undertaking this wonderful task. War Memorial: The work on replacing the grass verge to the side of the War Memorial on Hillside Ave. is now complete. It certainly adds to the dignity of the War Memorial site. Christmas Lights: The Christmas Lights will be erected during November ready to be switched-on on the 1st December. The 3 community Christmas trees will be erected during the week commencing the 19th November, giving anyone the opportunity to hang a decoration in memory of a loved one before the lights are fitted the following week ready for the switch-on on the 1st December. Christmas Dinners: The Community Council s Annual Christmas Dinners for our senior citizens will be held on 5th December for those citizens who reside in Llanharan and Ynysmaerdy and 12th December for those citizens who reside in Brynna. Bookings can be made in the Corner Shop on the Square, Bryncae Stores and McColls in Brynna. Please make sure that if you want to attend the Llanharan Dinner, but live in Brynna or vice versa, you indicate that on the booking form. The forms will require your name, address and whether you require transport. Grants: I was recently privileged to present a cheque for to South & West Wales Wildlife Trust to enable them to continue their work in managing Brynna Woods and Llanharan Marshes. The money will go towards a wildlife audit in which the Trust will be looking at the population of otters that could be occupying the Ewenni River, the population and species type of adders that can be found within the woods and the differing species of bats. All this information will feed into a management plan that will cover the next 5 years. The trust will also be buying specialist equipment to help in this process, the more notable one being a piece of equipment that will identify the species of bat whilst it is in flight purely by analyzing the frequency of the noise the bat emits. Part of the grant will also cover the cost of the educational talks and walks that the trust put on throughout the year for the benefit of the community. My thanks also to the volunteers who regular turn up on a Wednesday morning (10am if anyone is interested) to help maintain this wonderful facility. It was also a privilege to be able to present a cheque for 499 to Bryncae Football Club. Llanharan OAP Association celebrated the Golden Wedding Anniversary of Mick and Viv Boyce. I was honoured to be present at their celebration and congratulated them on behalf of the Community Council. In return, Mick and Viv accepted on behalf of the OAP Association, a grant from the Community Council for Trains It is pleasing to note that new train franchise Transport for Wales in partnership with Kelios Amey and backed by Welsh Government came into operation on the 14 October. Whilst wishing the whole project well, it was noted that it is the intention to provide 4 nonstop trains per hour between Bridgend and Cardiff but there has been no mention of any increase in frequency of trains stopping at Pencoed, Llanharan or Pontyclun and therefore one must assume that we will be stuck with a one train per hour service. This is unacceptable and discriminates against a large and rapidly growing population that requires a frequent and timely access to the capital and beyond through Intercity and other regional connections. Cllr. Paul Griffiths of Pontyclun Community Council attended the conference in Cardiff which launched the new all-wales service and he forcibly argued that it was not good enough to continue with just one train an hour at the Pontyclun, Llanharan and Pencoed stations when almost all other stations in South Wales would have at least two or four trains an hour. Therefore, Llanharan and Pontyclun Labour Party members have met to consider a joint way forward and will be meeting with Assembly Members, MP s and Ministers. A resolution to this issue is of vital importance to the future prosperity of the communities involved and we will be asking for your support as we press for more trains to stop at our stations. At its October meeting the Community Council decided/ noted the following: Open Spaces:- Benches and picnic tables have now been purchased for installation at Oakbrook park and Harold Street play area. It is hoped that these can put in place by the end of November. Tenders are to be sought for laying out and planting works at the Meadow Rise open spaces and the frontage of the Bridgend Road Allotment Site. A community group have applied to RCT to have a pathway that runs along the old railway line from Brynna to Wern Tarw designated as a Bridle Way. This path is used extensively by horse riders and walkers. The land had been put up for sale by the Administrators of Cofton Wales and was recently bought through an auction process. The new land owner is currently unknown to the Community Council. Footpaths:- All the foot paths through the community are to be identified as to what work is required to maintain the right of way. This survey will feed into a 3 year rolling plan of action. It is envisaged that a plan of local walks of varying degrees of difficulty can be produced to enhance the wellbeing of the community. Consultations about bridleway 44 are to continue with all interested parties in the hope to find a satisfactory Continued overleaf...

11 Llantrisant GUILDHALL Llantrisant Town Trust is delighted to announce that the completion of the Guildhall is in sight. As the local centre of power for almost 700 years which governed the ancient borough, the Grade II Listed Guildhall has the opportunity to become central to the community of Llantrisant once again as a heritage and visitors centre. Due to support from HLF Cymru, Cadw, Garfield Weston Foundation and the Trust s own fundraising efforts, funding is now available to complete the interior of the building. Throughout 2017 large-scale restoration work took place to the exterior of the Guildhall. A large extension was built for the installation of a lift to ensure full disability access to both floors, together with a toilet suitable for disabled use, and a boiler room. The entire building has been restored to the very highest conservation standards as befits a listed building. The main floor has been rebuilt, and extensive timber repairs carried out to the roof structure. New and refurbished windows and doors have been installed, and the exterior walls and porch have been completely repaired and renovated. The large medieval chimney has been rebuilt to its original height, and the roof completed in new Welsh slate. The final phase will allow contractors to fit ceilings, plaster and paint all the internal walls, fit the kitchen and toilets, complete the electrical, plumbing and drainage work, and install the lift, stairs and final floor finishes. Further fundraising is still taking place for the exhibition fit out which will allow the installation of high specification security cabinets and a full exhibition display will be installed on both floors. The Trust has commissioned a full-size mannequin of a Welsh longbowman dressed in the uniform worn at the Battle of Crecy. A longcase clock made by a Llantrisant clockmaker in 1780 has been traced and will go on display along with a showcase of Dr William Price items and a large oil painting of Sir David Evans, the Llantrisant-born Lord Mayor of London which is on loan from Cardiff Council. To ensure its long-term sustainability, the Guildhall will also become a wedding venue and offer a widerange of activities including workshops, rolling exhibitions, intimate dining experiences, concerts, evening lectures and even outdoor cinema. To become a Friend of the Guildhall and learn more about volunteering opportunities in the building once its opened, visit www. llantrisant.net TREVOR EVANS Hundreds of people turned out to bid a final farewell to one of Llantrisant s most loved and respected sons, Trevor Evans who died at the age of 84. Born in 1933 on Yr Allt to Charles and Eiddwen Evans (formerly John), Trevor later moved to Dan Caerlan. He was a Freeman of Llantrisant. On 7 February 1952 he joined the Welch Regiment and Private Evans found himself on a six-week boat trip to Hong Kong to serve in the Forgotten War of Korea. His regiment was dispatched to South Korea and on May 28, the Chinese launched a vicious attack that lasted four hours and would become one of the last major conflicts of the war - Hook Hill. A shell exploded near Private Evans, killing two friends and injuring his legs, later causing gangrene. Missing in action and believed dead, the town celebrated when the news arrived on August 31 that he was alive and following surgery by a French Canadian medical team, his legs were saved. Trevor was a hard working man. Cwm Colliery and Purolite being two of the places he worked. He was a keen footballer in his youth and an avid follower of Llantrisant RFC and loved the old town. Trevor married Diane and the couple settled on Heol Gwynno, Llantrisant with their five sons. Our deepest condolences go to the whole of the Evans family. REMEMBRANCE DAY The Freemen of Llantrisant will join the congregation at Llantrisant Parish Church at 9am on Sunday November 11 to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. The service will commemorate the centenary of the end of World War I and residents and visitors alike are invited to attend. Following the service they will also participate in a further act of remembrance at the War Memorial on the Bull Ring at 11am. COMMON BRIDGE Residents and visitors are indebted to the Cardiff Conversation Volunteers for building a new walkway and bridge on Llantrisant Common. The existing bridge was too short the surrounding ground was too boggy to navigate for many of our visitors. Llantrisant Community Council funded the materials and with the support of Cardiff Conservation Volunteers, we now have a brand new walkway and bridge to help walkers enjoy the Common safely and provide further protection for our rare flora and fauna. GHOST WALK Join an enthralling Ghost Walk around old Llantrisant on Saturday November 17 and learn more about the grisly past of this ancient hilltop town. From witches and spirits to murders and plagues, the journey will bewilder and terrify.! Two walks will take place on November 17 at 7pm and 8.30pm, starting on the Castle Green. For further details contact CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL The annual Llantrisant Parish Church Christmas Tree Festival is only a few weeks away. This year it will take place on December 7th, 8th and 9th with a wonderful selection of decorated Christmas trees on show throughout the weekend and of course the opportunity to meet Santa in his grotto. For further details parishsecretary@ parishofllantrisant.org.uk DR WILLIAM PRICE STATUE An iconic statue erected in Llantrisant to commemorate pioneer Dr William Price has been listed by Cadw for its historic and architectural interest. Situated on the Bull Ring in the centre of town in 1982, the statue celebrates an important historical figure who was central to the legalisation of the practice of cremation in Britain. It is also recognised for its special architectural interest as a good example of the work of Peter Nicholas, one of the more prominent creators of public sculpture in Wales in the late 20th century. CAROLS ON THE HILL The annual Carols on the Hill which includes the lighting of the Christmas Tree - will be held on the Bull Ring on Wednesday December 5 at 7pm. Llantrisant Male Choir and Ladies Choir will join in the festivities which also includes a special visit from Santa! Cancer is a foe that we will all have experience of. It could be a parent, an aunt, an uncle, a friend or even just someone we happen to know in passing. There is never a good time to get cancer, but, it is particularly life-changing to live through a child suffering with the condition let alone your child. Something Richard and Lorraine, Cian s parents, have had to live with. Unlike many debates, I didn t bring the topic up to swipe at the Government or condemn someone for not doing x or y, in fact quite the opposite. I brought the debate to the chamber to tell Cian s story in the hope that all political parties can work together and get all governments, Welsh and UK, to work together to help ensure that no family has to go through what Cian s have. I was privileged to attend the memorial event they held shortly after Cian died. Being part of this outpouring of love in the most tragic of circumstances truly was a privilege. I want to thank Cian s Head Teacher, Mrs Price, all the staff team; all of his school friends and the wider school community for the support and generosity they have shown Cian and his family. Cian suffered from an atypical rhabdoid (often called AT/RT) which sadly does not typically have good survival rates. The key to fighting this disease is simple: medical research. The key point I stressed in the House of Commons was not a party-political one. It is that we must continue to advance our knowledge base across Quiz Answers Our October quiz was won by one of our regular entrants, Ross Allen of Talbot Green who will receive a M&S voucher for 20. The sad reality is, whilst we seek to meet some of these challenges, other families like Cian s may sadly suffer the same anguish in the future. This isn t something that we can simply throw money at and it will be solved overnight. But, by steadfastly supporting the Eliminate Cancer Initiative and redoubling our efforts to find new treatments and, hopefully one day, a cure for cancers of the central nervous system, we can ensure that Cian s legacy lives on. 12 Can You Help Llanharan Primary with information on the names on Llanharan War Memorial In Llanharan Primary School's Year 5/6 class, we are learning about World War One as part of the festivities marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the conflict. For this topic, we are trying to find out as much information as possible about the 19 names on the war memorial who died in World War One. We have come up with a set of questions we want to try to answer through research and help. They are: How did they die? What was their service number? When were they born? When did they die? Where in Llanharan did they live? How old were they when they died? Does anyone in Llanharan have any connections or information about these men? Where are they buried? Please help us, as we think they should be celebrated. Thank you Diolch Mr Roberts & Year 5/6 RobertsR85@hwbmail.net Lieut. James Griffith Williams 17th Bn. An Officer report to Cabinet Members, at their meeting on Tuesday, October 16, contained an update on the condition of the road network in Rhondda Cynon Taf, and the Council s wider Highways Asset Investment Strategy. It put forward options for future maintenance of roads and footways. The report indicated the condition of the County Borough s road and footways has significantly improved since 2011/12 when the Council s Highway Investment Scheme (HIS) began and re-iterated that continued investment is required to sustain this improvement and further reduce maintenance costs. More than 28m has been invested by the Council to maintain County Borough roads over seven years. In 2011/12, before the HIS began, 10,142 defects were found on local roads, compared to 4,962 in 2017/18 following seven years of investment. The percentage of all classified A, B and C Roads requiring maintenance also dropped in this period, from 15.7% to 5.7%. The report put forward an option to invest 23.5m over three years, to continue the Council s accelerated funding approach. This would require in addition to core Council funding and Welsh Government announcements for road maintenance funding over the next three years an additional 12m investment. This option has a number of advantages, including improving the road network, reduced maintenance costs and reduced insurance claims. A separate report to Cabinet, also on October 16, included the proposed Highway investment of 12m outlined as part of wider 23.55m proposals across the Council s priority areas. This one-off investment, funded through earmarked reserves and prudential borrowing opportunities, will be considered by Full Council on October 24 following approval from Cabinet. Cabinet agreed to the 12m Highways investment, outlined in the separate Highways report, for road network maintenance over the next three years. MP Answers Questions at Pencoed Primary School Chris Elmore MP, was grilled by pupils of Pencoed Primary on Thursday October 4th. The MP was questioned by pupils of year 5 and 6 on topics ranging from Brexit to how many pets he has. The MP joined the pupils last year as a part of their Parliament week studies, so was asked to return for the Q&A this year. He said: It was fantastic to be invited back to have a Q&A with the young people. I ll be honest, I was more nervous than I am for most Parliamentary meetings, as you never know what you ll be asked! The pupils were so enthusiastic, it is such a fun part of the my role. The questions were challenging and some just brilliantly funny. Thanks to all the pupils and staff who welcomed me. There was chocolate cake, carrot cake, fruit cake, custard slices, cup-cakes, delicious freshly cooked welsh cakes- all donated. A truly marvellous display of both generosity and Bake Off! Cakes, tea/coffee, friends to chat with, a perfect recipe for a very successful Big Coffee Morning. As always we had our therapists, who this year were Tracy, Jazz, Bernadette and Susanne all of whom donated both their time, and treatment donations to Macmillan. Then there was our popular tombola our generous raffle and along with the craft stalls, all contributed to our amazing total of We must say a huge thank you to The Athletic Club who gave us the free use of their premises again and of course to all of you without whose generosity the occasion would not have been the co-ordinate a team of young volunteers. 14 Royal British Legion Llanharan Branch PREPARATIONS AND POPPIES GALORE A lengthy, well-attended poppy distribution programme was conducted during our last meeting, whereby members and loyal volunteers were allotted their attendance patterns at major stores during the Poppy Appeal campaign. There are three selling stints; 9-1, 1-5 and 5-9 commencing on 29th October and ending on 10th November. Once again, we look to kindly consenting members of the public to offer their invaluable willingness to participate by contacting David Jenkins on Our main aim is to better last year s excellent figure raised for the Poppy Appeal. It is pleasing to announce that the Branch has two new members, they are Hugh and Kay Roberts, former long serving military personnel, now retired, following lengthy Royal Military Police service behind them. Members present were allowed to introduce themselves individually to the couple, who dutifully responded admirably. They look to be worthy future members, whose value will be fully appreciated in times ahead. They reside in Ynysmaerdy. Plans for our anniversary concert on the 9th November were also unveiled. Mike Hughes has been assigned to coordinate the event. Children from Llanharan, Bynna and Dolau primary schools will help us commemorate the 100 years armistice of WW1 with songs and recitals in memory of the fallen. The Corps of Drums of the 3rd Welsh will display their skills alongside them. Admission is free, there will be a service at 6:30pm; so come along and support the Branch in what looks like to be a most splendid occasion. The Llanharan Community Council have ordered 70 of the largest replica poppies (15 dia.) from us. These will be fixed to lighting standards in Llanharan and Brynna. Each will bear the name of one of the fallen of WW1 as depicted on the Llanharan War Memorial. The idea is that of Mrs Joanne Miller, who has a son serving in the armed forces. Well done Joanne! Our local schools, too, have requested a supply of medium sized poppies in order to adorn school railings during this poignant period. Mr Jeremy Steed, son-in-law of Branch President, Kenwyn Bailey has big-heartedly presented us with 30 brilliantly crafted stained glass poppies for distribution. We shall offer them at 5 each, all proceeds going to the Poppy Appeal. Many thanks Jeremy, for such benevolence and act of altruism. Major Tony Rogers, C.O. of the Army Cadet Force in this area presented himself to provide a lengthy, but lucid account of how he was arranging the dedication of the new standard acquired by the Talbot Green Cadets. A military parade has been nominated for the ceremony, which will take place in a local church sometime in February Our own precious Llanharan Branch Standard is due to have the honour Ypres 2018 emblazoned on its surface. This stems from the time that Standard Bearer David Jenkins proudly paraded it among 1,500 others in the GP90 Ypres Menin Gate march during August. Former Welsh Guards bandsman Clayton McCann has provided a Christmas menu from The Boars Head, Coedcae Lane. Members and volunteers will dine together on the 7th December. Finally, the Poppy Count will take place at the Llanharan RFC clubhouse on the 14th November, - the count starts at 9:30am. Again, we ask for those willing volunteers for their help. Refreshments will be provided. 15 Miskin & Mwyndy WI Storm Callum brought wind, rain and floods but didn t stop us having our monthly WI meeting because it was Harvest Supper evening. The ladies excelled themselves with so much home made produce, apple pie, bara brith, trifles, spicy sausages, corn beef pies and so much more. The table was fit for a King!!! It was also Halloween, the competition was to dress up in a Halloween costume and some very scary witches appeared. Our trip to Hotter Shoes in Cardiff was a great evening out. The company provided drinks and snacks whilst we listened to the history of the shoe company. Everyone had their feet measured and given individual advice about shoes.anything we Strictly Charity This year's Strictly Charity Event, based on the TV show 'Strictly Come Dancing' was held at Llanharan Rugby on Friday 19th October with all monies raised going to Ty Hafan. After some general dancing, members who attend dance classes at Llanharan Rugby Club performed a group dance. It was then down to business as eight couples, one dancer and one non dancer, entertained an enthusiastic audience with a variety of dances in front of three judges. The non dancers had only been learning their routines for five weeks. The judges were Helen Young, Phillip Evans and Head Judge Len Duncan Smart. Taking the place of Tess and Claudia were Cllr Geraint Hopkins and Sharon Ashton. After impressive performances from all eight couples in the first round, three couples went through to the final. It was so close that Head Judge Len Duncan had to decide between three couples tied for third place. The finalists were Rod Jenkins and Diane Pring performing a Waltz, Nadine purchased in the shop that evening was reduced by 30% so bargains galore!!! We also all had a goody bag with lovely gifts inside and lucky lady Gwyneth won the raffle prize of 65 off any purchase in the shop, great evening. We are planning another trip there in the spring next year. Next month our talk is going to be given by one of our creative members who will be showing us how to make our own Christmas Cards. The calendar is starting to fill up for next year already we have booked a trip to see Calendar Girls in May at Millennium Centre, looking forward to that. Please join us as new members always welcome. We meet the 2nd Thursday of every month 7pm at The Pavillion, Lanlay Rd, Talbot Green, next meeting November 8th. Denise Imperato Norris and Haydn Norris performing a Charleston and Kath Underwood and John Griffiths performing a Tango. After an audience vote the winners were Kath Underwood and John Griffiths, their tango was performed to the song 'Never Tango With An Eskimo' whilst dressed as Eskimos. Head judge Len Duncan was particularly impressed with John's technical skills. This was the second year in a row for Kath Underwood to pick up the winner's trophy, last year she won whilst partnered to Cllr Geraint Hopkins. Kath Underwood with John (Nanook) Griffiths and their trophy Pontyclun WI We now know what a personal shopper does! Two ladies from John Lewis arrived carrying a large number of clothes travel bags. Our three plucky volunteer ladies disappeared into another room. The main room was arranged like a fashion catwalk, and the compere for the evening ( ie. a personal shopper ) emerged from the secret room. With baited breathe we awaited the first model! Down the catwalk she sashayed, looking every inch the catwalk model. Then all the other models came out in turn. Each were enthusiastically greeted and all looked stunning. Each model had an individual look which suited them, personally I lost count of the number of outfits worn by each mode. The turn around between outfits was swift. In true style the three of them came out at the end in seasonal party outfits. A very enjoyable evening for our first meeting back after the summer break. Huge thanks to the volunteer members, who I am sure were tired at the end. Then a week later it was the annual Harvest Supper Over 40 members came and enjoyed a very appetising supper. Stuffed turkey, boiled ham, corned beef pie and quiche were on offer plus salad and new potatoes. Dessert was a choice of Trifle or apple pie and custard or cream. A glass of wine or juice completed the feast. Jan a committee member gave us some fascinating facts about customs and rituals around the Harvest season and pointed out the Harvest Moon just outside. For once it was not raining and we could see this special moon! We finished with a laughter filled round of Bingo!! In October our speaker is David Maddox on Local History and in November it is Howard Rowe regaling us about his Cycling Across America adventure. Hope to see you soon at Pontyclun Community Centre on the third Tuesday of the month at 7pm. 19 A STEP BACK IN TIME Some notes on Llanharan Church It is sad that, unlike the other churches of The Border Vale of Glamorgan, little is known about the Church of St. Julius and Aaron before The church is situated in the oldest part of Llanharan, which for several hundred years has been a ribbon village stretched out along the Ewenny Fach brook. Llanharan can also be classified as an Estate Village, much dependent on the nearby Ty Mawr, namely Llanharan House. So one would expect the Powells and Jenkins families to have taken great interest in the church since the middle of the 18th century. The church is obviously much older than 1563 when it was declared a chapel annexed to Llanilid and to have in it christening and burying as a parish church. I am certain that it is much older than the Tudor Age, but as is often the case with church dedication that to St. Julius and Aaron does not help the Local Historian too much. l ve just looked up the two saints in The Oxford Book of Saints and the brief account adds only a little to our knowledge. It seems they were a couple of British saints martyred at Caerleon about the year 304 A.D. possibly during the persecution of Christians by the Roman Emperor Diocletian ( ). The two saints were mentioned by the historians Gildas (b500a.d.) and the Venerable Bede (b672 A.D.). Sadly, apart from the Caerleon connection, little is known about them. That is why in the summer of 1987 on a Pilgrimage to Brittany I was astonished to walk into a little hamlet of 7 or 8 houses called Lanharan and a little chapel dedicated to St. Haran. If you would like to see a photograph of the chapel you can see one Available to hire for private functions, groups and meetings KYOKUSHIN KARATE Sunday EXERCISE CIRCUIT CLASS Thursdays TAE KWON DO Tues, Fri & Sat PLAYTOTS run during term time Facilities include: ALL WEATHER 3G TRAINING SURFACE, PLAY AREA, CHANGING ROOMS, KITCHEN, HALL AND ROOM For more information and for booking availability please contact To hire the 3G surface contact Mike on Llanharry Community Centre Monday Nights BOXERCISE WALES Monday to Friday PLAYBOX Child Care Friday evenings JU-JITSU Thursday SLIMMING WORLD The Community Centre is available for Parties and Private Functions Contact Sue on The Centre caters for residents of Llanharry and there are spaces for new groups to utilize this important facility. in T.J. Witts Forgotten Years, Volume 3. What pleased me was the fact that some of the inhabitants were quite aware of our church and were even able to tell me that a St. Haran came from Wales to Brittany about 470 A.D. with a better known Irish Saint called Efflam. I cannot prove this fact, of course, but certainly the name of the saint, Haran, fits the place name better than the two Caerleon saints! Perhaps the dedication to them was a much later one and it is at least worth speculating that the original St. Haran had his origins here. The whole topic of dedication to early Celtic saints in Wales is indeed a thorny one, confused even more when I found near Treguier an isolated dedication to a St. Aaron (with no Julius). Brittany is indeed a land of Welsh saints! We are on slightly sounder ground when we come to the Norman advance into the Border Vale in the 12th century. It is now believed that the Welsh defended this locality much more strongly than once thought. At first the Normans established a lordship called Cherleton in the Ystradowen area and Earl Robert of Gloucester granted the church of Ystradowen and its possessions in Llanharry, Llanilid and Llanharan to Tewkesbury Abbey about This possibly suggests that Ystradowen was a sort of mother church of an extensive parochia with Llanharan one of its dependent churches. However, it did not stay with the great abbey for long for the Welsh recovered their territory soon afterwards, roughly in the 1130s. Later, Llanharan became a chapel annexed to Llanilid, which it remained to modern times. In 1835 it was still described as a curacy to Llanilid. Were it possible to be transported back to the Middle Ages we would be surprised at what most of our parish churches and dependent chapels looked like. They would have had thatched roofs, a niche for the local saint, stone The centre caters for the whole community with a number of local groups and classes already making use of it s excellent facilities. The great changes came, of course, with the arrival of Henry V111 on the throne in the 16th century. One of the many innovations of the Reformation was the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s to raise much needed revenues and destroy an important symbol of traditional religion. Prior to dissolving the monasteries Henry s government valued all churches in the land in (The Valor Ecclesiasticus). The Mother Church of Llanilid with Llanharan was valued at 8. This was not surprisingly 3 more than Llanharry. The stream of reform became a flood with the accession of Henry s son Edward VI in His was a short reign. Yet it witnessed the imposition of new Protestant doctrine by means of the 1549 and 1552 Prayer Books and the looting of many church treasures. This looting would have happened at Llanilid and Llanharan as it did throughout the Border Vale and especially at Cowbridge, where about 15 church items were confiscated by Edward s commissioners. At Llanilid with Llanharan the parson Thomas David testified that in the year 1552 a crosse of tinn covered with coper, a chasuble of olive satten biges, bras Candlesticks and altere clothes were removed. Any wall paintings in the churches were probably covered with whitewash at this time. One of the best changes that occurred during the Reformation and the more moderate Elizabethan Settlement was the placing of the William Morgan Bible in all churches in There is quite a bit of evidence that the Old Faith lingered on in the Llanharan area as it certainly did in Penlline, Llanharry and parts of the Vale of Glamorgan. Those who refused to attend Services of the Church of England were called recusants and were heavily fined or worse. As late as 1661, the first year of Charlesl 1 s reign, some 18 Catholics, including some from the parishes of Llanharan and Llanharry were presented at the Great Sessions at Cardiff for absenting themselves from their parish churches or chapels upon Sundays. A few years later the Compton Report of 1676 stated that at Llanharan there were 34 conformists, 4 nonconformists but significantly no papists Was the old faith dying out here by the final years of Charles 11 s reign? By this time we have a hint of the size of Llanharan village. The Hearth Tax Returns record some 40 houses suggesting that Llanharan was growing into a proper village, but there are only hints as to whether it had a Ty Mawr or a recognised Squire. A will of 1679 and a monument behind the church altar stalls yield some tantalising clues. Evan Rees will gives two shillings to repair the church of Llanharan, where he wishes to be buried as well as a shilling to repair Llandaff Cathedral and 10 bushels of oats to the poor of the parish. Significantly, part of his property, Ton Y Gof is the area surrounding what is now Llanharan House. Terry Witts and I often wondered whether on this evidence alone, we could elevate Evan Rees from beyond that of a member of a rising yeoman family. The above mentioned monument to the Mathew family of Meiros is perhaps better evidence of a family of lesser gentry living in Llanharan well before the arrival of the Powell family from Maesteg in the early 18th century. The monument is a memorial to Morris Mathew of Meiros, who died in November 1663, aged 82, his son William Mathew, who died in 1713 aged 71 and his grandson, who died in 1764 aged 92. What remarkable longevity! This John of Brynchwith, (Llandyfodwg) I believe, became High Sheriff in 1748-a good example, I expect, PLANS Plans drawn for Building Regulations & Planning Permission Telephone Marc Anthony on or for a FREE CONSULTATION of judicious marriage and advantageous purchase. The burial of the High Sheriff was said to have been in Llanharry by William Thomas in his famous Diary- a good example of how the two villages have been so often confused over the centuries! We know for certain that late 17th century Meiros was not a large house compared with other mansions in the Vale for it possessed only 5 hearths in the 1670s. Sadly, very little is known about the 17th century church at Llanharan, where the Mathews of Meiros and others had worshipped, apart from snippets such as the church acquiring a new chalice in 1691 and the Sexton in 1700 receiving sixpence for every grave dug in the church yard. For those who wish to study the history of the church in more detail I m pleased to tell them that the Burial and Baptism Registers date back to the early 17th century (1641 and 1615). The Marriage Registers begin in As Llanharan was said in Elizabeth s reign to have in it christening and burying as a parish church one wonders whether couples had for centuries to be married in the mother church across the fields in Llanilid. If so, I can t think of a more idyllic setting! Just for interest the earliest burial record I can find at Llanharan is that of James Mathew, buried May 9th 1646, who was probably related to those on the Meiros monument. As regards Baptism the earliest I ve come across is that of Jennet, the daughter of David Bevan, who was christened on the 16th of July 1615 (James l s reign). Finally, the first marriage I ve discovered in the records was that of Thomas Evan and Margaret Thomas that took place on May 6th 1721 (George l s reign). Bride and groom were both from the same parish as were many other couples at this period. Let us turn to the role of the church in the 18th century. Celtic Dove Release Ideal for Weddings Civil Ceremonies Christenings Funerals prydferth@yahoo.co.uk This period, also known as The Age of Reason, has been much maligned for nepotism, pluralism, absenteeism and general slumber in the Church of England. These criticisms seem to apply to Llanilid with Llanharan as they do at Llanharry. Take the Rev. William Church, ( ), for example. He was the incumbent for Llanilid and Llanharan and for 2 other livings in the Vale of Glamorgan, yet he lived away from his Welsh churches at Bamford in Oxfordshire. Church, readers may recall, was the husband of Kitty Deere, of Ash Hall, Ystradowen, one of Iolo Morganwg s first loves and inspirer of his verse. Whilst Church was, away his curate David Griffith lived in the Parsonage House in Llanilid. He was in charge of the three parishes of Llanilid, Llanharan and Llanharry for a mere 32 a year. Yet this possibly threadbare curate would ride to each of his churches and preach a sermon every Sunday, which is quite exceptional for the times. The services were in Welsh and the children were catechised during Lent and Summer. In 1771 there were 24 communicants, twice that of Llanilid, which suggests that Llanharan may have been starting to grow as a village. Holy Communion was only taken four times a year, which was quite normal. Sadly, I do not know much about the earlier clergy at Llanharan, apart from their names and dates. They were Rowland Davies, David Williams and James Morgan. We do know that the Terrier was written in 1705 when Rowland Davies was Rector. It lists the tithes payable on eggs, cheese, lambs, hay, wool, corn, calves, pigs, honey, apples, hemp, colts and geese. When David Williams was Rector, Llanharan got its first school partly due to the S.P.C.K. (Society for Promotion of Christian Knowledge) and partly due to support from the local clergyman. The school catered for 20 boys. Some 40 years Continued Overleaf... 20 later another school was set up that had support from the local church. This was one of the well known Griffith Jones Circulating Schools and this time boys and girls attended it. After 1770 sadly there were no more schools in the parish until well into the 19th century. One of the aspects of this 18th century church that would shock us today was the churchyard activity. At nearby Peterston the churchyard was used as a sort of regular market and the ale drapers from Cowbridge were fined in 1731 for selling beer, gingerbread and cakes there on a Sunday. We also know that the young men of Llanharan enjoyed playing outdoor games like skittles and bowls in God s, little acre and especially hand tennis against the north wall that is the less holy part of the church! Before moving on to the age of Squirearchy it is worth trying to explain why the Crown always held the patronage of Llanilid with Llanharan. I have been told that this goes back to the time from Richard 111 to Edward V1 s reign when the king was lord of Ruthin, in which Llanilid and Llanharan were situated. The lordship was granted to William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke about 1550 but the advowson, that is the right of presentation to a benefice, was kept by the Crown. Although, in effect the rectors of Llanilid with Llanharan were appointed by the government, the appointees, it seems, to have been mostly local men. It worked out like this. The Lord Chancellor would take advice from the leading government supporters in the county where the living was situated. Whether the Powells of Llanharan House in the 18th century were important enough to influence the appointments is uncertain, but that may well have changed in the 19th century when the clergy were mostly resident. The arrival of the Powells from near Maesteg in the early 18th century certainly marked a distinct watershed in the history of Llanharan in other ways. Rees Powell, the founder of the Llanharan branch of the family, had acquired a foothold in the village by 1700 for we find him leasing The Corner House pub to Gwenllian Griffith for 99 years. Here again we have an inn in close proximity to a church! By the 1740s Rees had acquired ownership of much of the parish and built himself a country mansion now known as Llanharan House. The plaque in Llanharan Church shows Rees and his successors, including two of his children William and Gervase, who were to have some impact on the spiritual as well as the material lives of Llanharan people. The Powells, like the later Jenkins and Blandy Jenkinses, were supporters of the established church, but Rees son William had a surprisingly tolerant attitude to Nonconformity that in the later years of the 18th century was posing a threat to the church here and elsewhere. The Congregational cause had begun sometime between 1730 and 1760 and met in the local farms, but by 1770 Powell went so far as to grant the dissenters a public house, probably The High Corner that they converted into a chapel. On the death of William a hardening of attitude occurred under the Rev. Gervase Powell and he turned out the Independents unceremoniously forcing them to build Bethlehem Chapel in the neighbouring parish in This chapel was to extend a far stronger influence than the church over the spiritual life of the village into the next century and beyond. Gervase Powell, although in true Powell fashion spent time extending his estate in Llanharan and elsewhere, did not spend all his life in Llanharan House. For one thing he was Rector of Merthyr and Llanfigan and later became a noted figure in the social life of Bath. He even took some important manuscripts and books from Llanharan to his English home. But when he died on July 8th 1795 it was to Llanharan Church that he was brought back to be buried aged 72. His descent from the Welsh princes is proudly displayed on the marble wall tablet, but the most interesting person on the plaque is that of Margaret, his wife, who may have been the original of the immortal Mrs. Malaprop of Sheridan s play The Rivals. To think that Margaret, the daughter of Charles Vaughan of Skethrog, Breconshire may have been uttering amusing malapropisms not only in Bath but in Llanharan Church that, apart from one, have not been recorded, is an intriguing thought! It is said that his daughter suffered from singular linguistic shortcomings telling her friend that her husband had added a crocodile to his will! By the way, the Powells were not the only gentry family to associate themselves with Llanharan Church. The Bassetts of Lanelay, although residing nearer to Llantrisant, were christened, married and buried at the church, including the last of the line, the spinsters Eleanor, Joan and Anne, who had lived out their lives in great seclusion at Lanelay. David Jones of Wallington s father once caught a glimpse of them and said they were the oddest little women he d ever seen and he didn t wonder at their being so shy at being seen. Of all the marriages solemnised in Llanharan Church none was more important than that of Anne Jenkins of Llanharan and the Rev. Nathaniel Poyntz of Odell in Bedfordshire in September Richard Hoare Jenkins, the successor as Squire to the Powells, was a confirmed bachelor, so his sister s marriage was essential to furthering the Jenkins line. It was through the marriage of Nathaniel Poyntz s daughter Caroline Anne to John Blandy of Kingston Bagpuize that the Blandy Jenkins came to rule the roost in Llanharan in the second half of the 19th century. Relations between the church and R.H. Jenkins remained strong as it did with his successors and the old Squire s funeral in April 1856 must have been one of the last important services held in the old church. Richard Hoare Jenkins had sat in the Squire s pew for half a century. I have described him elsewhere as a Homo Rusticus to whom hunting, shooting and fishing was as important as public affairs. As regards seating in the old church, it is worth pointing out that the pews immediately behind the old Squire traditionally belonged to the Richards of Hendreowen, who unlike many in the farming community, had remained loyal to the Church and had provided Churchwardens for over a hundred years! It would be nice to tell readers more about the old church, but all I ve discovered apart from its size, 34 feet long and 15 feet wide is that most of its seats were free by 1850 and that the present pathway through the churchyard was the aisle of the old building. We are left with the intriguing question of why a new church needed to be built in The numbers attending were relatively low, there was space for only 60, about 20 attended Morning Service on average, whereas 120 attended Bethlehem chapel in Significantly, there were no more than 330 residents in the parish and little prospect of a rise in population. So one can only speculate that like the surrounding village churches of Llanharry, Llanilid and Ystradowen Llanharan Church was in a state of dilapidation. The new church was designed by John Prichard ( ) and is a splendid example of early Decorated Victorian Gothic architecture. It was built in the various colours of local Pennant sandstone and it had a much larger chancel arch than the old church. The builder was John Rees of Bridgend, the cost was 1,058 and it was dedicated on 16th of September It wasn t many years later that Llanharan got its first school for a hundred years and its construction was an example of The National Society working in harmony with the Church and the Big House. The school was aptly situated near the village church and its first headmaster was Mr. John Smith. To bring the story of Llanharan Church up to 1900, I consulted the church registers and noticed the names of worshippers changed dramatically between 1871 and 1891 when the population doubled. No longer were those baptised, married and buried exclusively Welsh in origin and speech. After the new church was built and especially after 1871, one finds English names appearing. One of the first was George Perkins the village policeman in Once the collieries opened we find a glut of English families mentioned with names like Hole, Parker, Nash, Trotman, Pyne, Kinsey, Shillibeer, Riddler and Hutchings. These families and later ones merged successfully with the older Welsh population to enable the village to enjoy a rich cultural heritage in the Age of Coal. The downside was the decline of Welsh spoken in the Church, Sunday School and the Village. However, these changes gave St. Julius and Aaron the shot in the arm the new church needed as it entered the 20th century. But that story is for someone else to tell!
