Tonysguboriau It was a busy end of term at Tonysguboriau. I thoroughly enjoyed watching my son in his year 2 move-up assembly. Miss Lane has clearly worked hard with the class and their performance of When I Grow Up brought tears to the eyes! You can see it for yourself on their twitter page. Mr Hurford did not disappoint with the year 6 leavers assembly either, resulting in lots of wet eyes in the hall!! The year 6 parents also organised another glamorous prom, and I wish the year 6 pupils the best of luck in their new schools. Congratulations go to the Tonysguboriau Year 3 and 4 football team who won the RCT World Cup playing as England! They beat Gwaun Miskin 3-0 in the semi-final before winning 2-0 against Gwauncelyn in the final. The children return to school on Tuesday 4th September, and they have an additional training day planned for Monday 5th November following the half-term break. Y Pant It was a busy month of trips at Y Pant with visits to Spain, Paris and Krakow amongst others. These trips offer invaluable experiences to the students and also give them a chance to breathe after a few hard months preparing for and sitting exams. Y Pant s school uniform shop will be open from 5pm to 8pm from Tuesday 28th to Thursday 30th August. The new school logo is being introduced on uniform for year 7 pupils only, with further information available on the school website. Inset Days for have been confirmed as: Monday 3rd September, Monday 5th November, Friday 21st December and Monday 22nd July, with one further date to be confirmed. Ebenezer Church Ebenezer Church are very excited about Holiday Club It is for all children of primary school age (4-11) and runs from 9.30am to 12.00pm from Monday 6th to Friday 10th August. Each day there will be games, craft, stories, singing and much more. There is a cost of 1 per day. Simply turn up and complete a registration form on the morning. Magistrates Court As you will have seen, the site of land where the Magistrates Court is located and the adjoining land is up for sale. Bids for the site have been asked for by noon on the 5th September. Rest assured, this is not a highest bidder wins. I will be fighting for the best deal for the village, which in my eyes would see car parking remain a priority. Highway improvements The council has been successful in receiving funding of 150,000 to improve traffic flow at the main set of traffic lights by the retail park. The southbound right-turn lane into Talbot Green (alongside Danygraig Heights) is being lengthened, and works are due for completion by September. The lengthened lane will give vehicles turning right towards Talbot Green town centre and the Retail Park additional space to wait without obstructing traffic going straight ahead. The project will also alter the staging of the traffic signals at this junction, in order to improve the junction s capacity and traffic flow. Pedestrian Crossing The pedestrian crossing near Trustmark has undergone a complete refurbishment during July, resulting in a safer, more reliable crossing point in the centre of the village. Llantrisant Community Route Those of you who use the community route will have seen that the works to create a footpath from the path into the retail park has been completed improving pedestrian safety. The amount of litter along the path coming from McDonalds is not acceptable, and I have written to the restaurant about this and the council will consider enforcement action if it does not improve. I am aware of the problems with the chippings along the side of the route, and officers are looking into a long-term solution. Heol Johnson & Green Park I have had numerous reports from residents of Heol Johnson and Green Park of anti-social behaviour, thefts from vehicles and from front gardens over the last few weeks. Please remain vigilant especially in the hot weather when we all tend to keep windows and doors open. New Police Constable Following on from the above, we now have a new police constable for the ward. PC Jonathan Jones has been appointed and I will continue to raise any issues with him. However, please report anything of suspicion or any actual crimes via 101 so that they are recorded otherwise everything will look okay. Llantrisant Community Council The Community Councils funded hanging baskets and planters have held out well in the hot weather. We have had to instruct our contractors to water the flowers one extra day per week to ensure they remain in full bloom for as long as possible. They certainly look great as they are! We have also approved the replacement of the rotten wooden barrel planter at Lanelay Park. This is being replaced with a recycled plastic barrel planter which has water reservoirs. RCT Council will also be replacing the damaged grit bin at Bronhaul. The Community Council have extended the closing date for the post of Youth Participation and Development Officer to 31st August If you are looking for a part time role, and are interested in introducing and expanding activities for children and young people across our four wards then please visit the Llantrisant Community Council website for further details. Problems The council itself should be your first port of call to report issues on , or online at rctcbc.gov.uk/en/contactus/ Reportit.aspx. If you contact me by phone and there is no answer then please leave a message and I will report the issue and get back to you if needed. My contact details are: Cllr. 4 Pontyclun Time to move The time has come again for children in our community to move on. Children are moving on from babyhood to nursery, nursery to infant school, infant school to junior school etc. Paul and I wish them all well in the next part of their adventures. As school governors, and taking part in their activities we know how well our children blossom. At the end of the school term there were all sorts of ways that the schools were exhibiting the children s skills and talents. I hope some of you were able to appreciate the hard work of our teachers and the amazing talents of our children, either as parents, grandparents or friends. We thoroughly enjoy this part of our role as governors. Pontyclun Primary School Pontyclun Primary School are saying farewell to a longstanding and admired member of staff, Mr Williams who is moving on to become a deputy head of another school in Rhondda Cynon Taff. We wish him well. The children and parents have been saying fond farewells at school and events organised by the Parent Teacher Association, including the well attended quiz at the Athletic Club and the school fete, held at Pontyclun park. The money raised by the Parent and Teacher Associations of all schools is becoming essential to the finances of the school as budgets continue to be hit by austerity cuts by the UK Government. If there is anyone in the community who would like to be involved with the Pontyclun Primary School PTA, get in touch with me and I can put you in touch with the chair. Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Gymunedol Llantrisant YGGG Llantrisant has a very outward looking curriculum and have over the past few years gained flags for being a fair trade school and an Eco school. This year the school has being working towards achieving the platinum,( the highest) award as an Eco school. The Eco committee of children were very excited and looked forward to their fourth green flag assessment at the end of July. Much hard work went into preparing. This included working with RCT council to prepare information posters, to display locally, about the history of the haematite iron works and the local ecology. Tim Wort from Keep Wales Tidy worked with the Eco committee to do a litter pick around the vicinity of the school and to highlight the litter problems communities face. Nigel Little from Size of Wales visited the school to talk to year 5 and 6 pupils about deforestation and the floating gardens in Bangladesh. Pontyclun Environment Group Pontyclun Environment Group held its annual general meeting in June on the beach alongside the river Ely, accessed from the Brynsadller river bridge. It was a great success with new members keen to keep our community clean and free from litter but also interested in promoting and looking after the environment. We will be working with both Pontyclun Community Council and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to help manage our local environment. Since the meeting, members of the group have removed rubbish from the river, including shopping trolleys, carpets and tyres. Our next big clean will be in September when we will take part in a River and Beach clean organised by Keep Wales Tidy. If you are interested in getting involved contact me. Café 50 Afternoon Support Group Café 50 offers a small support group for people living with dementia and their friends and carers. As a friendly group we welcome anyone who would like to socialise in a smaller group. We provide activities and conversation to suit each individual. This includes large piece jigsaws, cards, dominoes, draughts, card making, knitting and anything else you can think of. I think the following words fit the way our group works. Do not ask me to remember Do not try to make me understand Let me rest and know you are with me Kiss my cheek and hold my hand Contact me and come along on the second and fourth Monday of each month from 1.30 to 3.30 p.m. Miskin Playing Field The Miskin playing field by the Welsh School, YGGG Llantrisant, is a community field for use by the children of the school and for informal games and play by members of the community. If a business, which charges participants, wants to hire the field, this is possible by contacting a Parks booking clerk on A fee will be charged and appropriate hours will be agreed. Miskin Village Green Residents of Miskin are working hard to get land near their homes designated as a Village Green which means land designated for recreational use. It is the land behind Oaklands, Dol y Llan, Maes y Wennol and St David s Heights. Residents of the area have used the fields over the last 20 years for all sorts of play including walking, running, flying kites, learning to ride a bike and star gazing and want to retain this right which has never been disputed. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council have agreed to hold an independent inquiry into the village green application. The residents committee are looking for people to provide evidence and photographs of their use of the fields. If you can help, please contact Sophie Seymour on Sepsis In June, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council passed a motion to support the Welsh Government undertake a public awareness campaign to make people aware of the dangers of Sepsis and to improve outcomes for survivors and those affected. Coronation Street is also taking up this need to improve awareness as Sepsis kills 44,000 people in the UK each year: and many of you will know of family and friends who have died from Sepsis. It is known as the silent killer and occurs when the body violently responds to the infection and attacks its own organs. Rhondda Cynon Taf will take steps to promote education and awareness of the symptoms. Weekly Councillor Surgery Margaret Griffiths and Paul Griffiths hold a weekly surgery each Tuesday from 9 am to 9.45 at Pontyclun Library to cover all issues relating to RCT Council and Pontyclun Community Council. Note: There are several grants to other community organisations yet to be determined, but the council is awaiting further documentation in support of their applications. Brynna Woods & Llanharan Marshes: Following on from the presentation made by the South & West Wales Wild Life Trust at its June meeting the Community Council awarded the Wild life trust a grant of to enable it to continue its work in management of the woods through the local volunteers. The grant will also enable the appropriate resources to enable a management and action plan to be drawn up that will cover the next 5 years. Within that plan will be the outcome of a study of reptiles in the area as it is possible that the wood is home to one of the largest numbers of adders in Wales and a separate study that will help identify the distinct species of bats that dwell in the woods. Llanharan Bypass: The Community Council received an update from the project manager assigned to this project by RCT. The position so far is that consultants have been appointed to bring the multi-million pound project to a pre planning application stage and to prepare a business report for the Welsh Government who are going to underwrite the funding for this project. He pointed that over the last month there have numerous cameras and other data gathering equipment placed on the roads throughout the community to determine traffic flows in, out and through the community and the type of vehicles that are used (ie cars, vans and the different lorry sizes). All this information will help inform the overall feasibility study that will determine the exact route of eastern part of the bypass. In the next few weeks, landowners that have land within a 1km wide corridor from the top of enterprise way in an arc to A473 as it exits the village to the east towards Talbot Green will be asked for permission to allow an ecological survey to be undertaken on their land. This survey will take 12 months to complete as it must cover the 4 seasons. In the meantime, work will progress in identifying the optimum route in terms of cost, environmental impact i.e.. minimal noise, dust and air pollution and many other factors including where to cross the railway. The outcome of all this work will be a report that identifies the optimum route and a in principle agreement with Network Rail as to where the bypass will cross the railway line, what land needs to be obtained either by agreement with the landowners or compulsory purchased and of course public consultation. All this is expected to be in place towards the end of It will then be a matter of seeking planning permission, and relating the progress of the actual construct to the progress of construction of the remaining western leg so that when the eastern leg is built the whole of the bypass will be available for use. Please note that this is a very broad outline of the ongoing work. The Community Council is still optimistic that the Bypass will be completed by 2021/22. War Memorial: The Community Council has decided to replace the rather dilapidated grass verge to the side of the memorial with lowmaintenance, artificial grass. An area will still be available to allow people to plant crosses in memory of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Election: There will be 3 candidates standing for election in the Brynna Ward on the 2nd August namely: Gareth Coombs (Welsh Conservative), Dan Morelli (Welsh Labour) and Barbara Stephens (Independent). Future Meetings: The next CIG meeting will be 10 September 2018 starting at 7:00pm and the next Ordinary Council meeting will be on Thursday 20 September 2018 at Llanharan Miner s Welfare Hall starting at 7:00pm. A reminder that the Minutes of the Community Council s and its committee s meetings can be found at the office in the Drop-in-Centre, at the local Post Offices and on the Community Council s web site Hard copies are available from the clerk upon request. Over the next few months officers of the council will concentrate their efforts on those householders who either recycle very little or in some cases nothing at all. Once this exercise has been completed attention will be turned those households who do not recycle their food waste as there is scope here to increase our recycling rate significantly and at the same time diverting food waste away from land fill. Let me point out at this stage that this will only affect households who dispose of their food waste by way of their wheelie bins and does not apply to those of you who do you own composting. It s in everyone s interest to protect our environment and by diverting more waste away from land fill will be another step in the right direction. Your cooperation would be greatly appreciated. BRYNNA CARNIVAL [sponsored by Llanharan Community Council] It s not on many occasions that can I say that the weather matched the occasion but this year s Brynna PTA Community Carnival certainly did - it was simply fantastic! My thanks go to the Brynna PTA and the many volunteers for making this a special community day. I could go on and on but there s more information on the carnival under the school news. SCHOOL NEWS BRYNNAU PRIMARY SCHOOL The year has come to an end and the children have worked hard throughout. The staff are extremely proud of everybody s achievements and everyone certainly deserve their summer holidays. DOSBARTH AUR & ARIAN The children have completed their Mexico Maya masks with Mrs Harris from Y Pant, which look fantastic. In preparation for the carnival the children took part in an African drumming workshop, from which they were able to lead the procession around the village on carnival day. This half term the Year five children have enjoyed interactive lessons about the Old Testament taken by Alan Davies. DOSBARTH EFYDD & GLAS The children thoroughly enjoyed their trip to the Egypt Centre in Swansea. They learnt about the Egyptian Mummies and even made their own. The children were complimented on their exceptional behaviour by the staff at the Centre. On their return to school the children made pyramids, sarcophagus, sphinx and chariots out of recycled materials and clay. This culminated in the children performing an Egyptian song and dance on the stage during the carnival. DOSBARTH GWYRDD & MELYN The children thoroughly enjoyed learning about India. They researched facts about animals, famous people, musical instruments, the weather and what they believe in. As part of our preparations for the carnival the children learnt how to create tie-dye t-shirts. The end results were amazing. Each design was an original; some had spirals, stripes and others had spots, along with a mixture of colours. On the day of the carnival the children wore their creations with pride whilst demonstrating their skills of Bhangra dancing. DOSBARTH ENFYS Scorch and Scorchette have tied the knot. The children planned the most wonderful wedding for the happy couple. The day began with the bride and groom arriving at the church in an opentop car. Reverend Rachel took the service and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Once the service was over the happy couple returned to school for the reception, with wonderful speeches from the Best Man and Father of the Bride. The cutting of the cake and the throwing of the bride s bouquet drew the event to a close. Scorch and Scorchette are looking forward to a very happy life together. BRYNNAU PTA COMMUNITY CARNIVAL Once again the school was extremely fortunate to host such a wonderful event, supported by so many members of the local community. When the children arrived on the field they entertained the crowds with songs they had written and dances. The weather was glorious and everyone had the opportunity to watch some of the local groups perform, a magician and a band that ended the days celebrations. As well as this, on the field there were local charities and businesses who set up stalls with a wide range of items for sale, an inflatable for the children, Brynnau FC penalty shoot-out and of course a never-ending queue for the food tent. All had a good time. CARDIFF CITY PENALTY SHOOT OUT Over the year we have been extremely fortunate to work closely with Cardiff City. Each week, Gaza, has taught children throughout the school basic football skills as well as the importance of teamwork. As part of this he has also run afterschool clubs, which was very well supported, from Year 2 to Year 6. To show our appreciation we held a sponsored penalty shoot-out to raise money for Cardiff City. A large inflatable goal was set up and the children tested their skills against the coach. It was a wonderful day. Thank you Gaza for you enthusiasm and commitment. YEAR SIX ABERNANT RESIDENTIAL Earlier this month year Six children headed off for three days of adventure in Abernant. They took part in a wide range of activities such as abseiling, rock climbing and paddle boarding to name but a few. The children also enjoyed the food! As always they were wonderful rolemodels for the school. DATES Monday 3rd September - Inset day Tuesday 4th September - Children return to school DOLAU PRIMARY SCHOOL PETER PAN With a colourful history of producing magnificent musical productions, this year s theatrical spectacular from Dolau was no exception. Year 5 and 6 pupils took the lead roles in their production of Peter Pan whilst the year 3 and 4 pupils provided the chorus songs. With three sellout shows, it really was a great week, with pupils enjoying a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of a professional show in the Sony Theatre, Bridgend. Some audience members commented that I had to remind myself that these were primary school children, whilst another member of the audience said, this was the best production I ve ever seen by a school.. CARDIFF CITY FOOTBALL CLUB Year 3 and 4 had a lovely day to celebrate the end of a busy year with a visit to the Cardiff City Football Stadium. A tour of the stadium was an opportunity to see behind the scenes of a Premiership football club, whilst the workshop taught them all Continued overleaf...

Dolau won all of their group games convincingly but lost narrowly by 3 runs in the semi-final. That s two years in a row losing in the semifinal! Hopefully next year, one better and reach the final! ATTENDANCE AWARD Dosbarth 7 were the proud winners of the 2017/18 class attendance award having had the best attendance for the academic year. They enjoyed an afternoon of cooking party food including pizza and cocktail sausages before going outside to relax on their picnic blankets with their freshly prepared food. Parents were invited to join in the celebration with their children. DOG POO Following the council s cabinet decision to introduce a Public Spaces Protection Order in October 2017 to counteract the growing problem of dog fouling in public places I was encouraged earlier on by the way dog owners were acting more responsibly and as a result this anti social behaviour seemed to be diminishing. Let s remind ourselves of the main conditions of the order: 1]A requirement for a person in charge of a dog to keep that dog on a lead at all times in cemeteries owned/maintained by the council. 2]A requirement for a person in charge of a dog at all times to carry bags or other suitable means for the disposal of dog faeces. 3]A prohibition excluding dogs from all schools, playgrounds and marked sports pitches owned/maintained by the council. If any of the above conditions are ignored the person in charge of the dog could be liable to a fixed penalty fine of 100. It s sad to say that this past month has seen a reversal in this positivity. Not only Under 10 team with their trophies Under 11s after their presentation The girls teams with their medals Andrew Neil welcoming the girls team coaches onto the stage have there been more reports of dog mess on our footpaths but when Brynna Junior Football Club went to train on the bottom pitch at Brynna Recreational Fields the other week the coaches found 5 separate lots of dog faeces spread across the pitch. Needless to say that the mess had to be cleared before the boys and girls could train. This, I am sure you will agree with me, is totally unacceptable. I know for a fact that the council enforcement officers have increased their patrols of the area since I have informed them of my concerns and some dog owners in the community have received fixed penalties, but I would ask you all to be vigilant and to report anything which could help our enforcement officers apprehend more of the perpetrators. Andrew Neil presenting a club tie to yours truly If you would like to ring me on the number below I can assure you that the information will be treated in the strictest confidence. BRYNNA JUNIOR [MINI SECTION] FOOTBALL CLUB ANNUAL PRESENTATIONS This year s presentations were held at Llanharan Rugby Club on Saturday 30th June. It was indeed an incredible evening with the largest audience I have ever witnessed at a presentation evening. The evening started with Andrew Neil, coach and committee member, taking to the stage to welcome everyone to the event. First up were the girls Under 12 and Under 13 teams whose coaches were Karan Edwards, ark Rees and Paul Bullock. The girls teams were newly formed this season and some 30 players had registered. Each player was presented with a medal. [see photograph] Following on it was my privilege to introduce the coaches onto the stage from Under 7 to Under 11. All in all over 142 boys and girls were registered with the club this season which is a record in itself but if you include the girls the total is a staggering 172. Absolutely superb! My first duty was to welcome on stage the coaches for the Under 7s who were: Scott Davies, Stuart Howells and Alex Lewis Next up were the Under 8s whose coaches were: Stuart Howells, Peter and Rolf Cools followed by the Under 9s who had enough players registered to field 3 teams. Their coaches were: Mathew Davey, Gareth Morgan, Tony Jones Gavin Wakeham and John Fletcher. Next were the under 10s whose coaches were: Taffy Ayoub and Danny Morris And last but no means least were the Under 11s who fielded two sides.their coaches were: Martin Chick, Lloyd Hyde and Robert Holbrook. All players were presented with their own trophies as a token of the club s appreciation for their endeavours over the season. As the honorary chairman of the club I wish to publicly thank all the coaches for their commitment and loyalty over the season which is greatly appreciated by everyone involved. Likewise I cannot finish without mentioning the loyal committee, who are the backbone of the club, whose guidance and stewardship are so invaluable to the club s success. The committee members are: Mike Hughes [president], Natalie Smith-Johns [secretary], Nigel Foster [treasurer], Jane Jenkins [welfare officer] and Andrew Neil [webmaster]. My grateful thanks to you all. Roger K Turner County Borough Councillor roger.k.turner@rctcbc. gov.uk

Wayne Owen County Borough councillor PENIEL CHAPEL, LLANHARRY Following the site meeting at the chapel on Tuesday, June 27th 2018 I was asked to provide a brief account of the history of Peniel. It is most unusual that the origin of the building arose from a game of football being played in a field in 1820 opposite today s Peniel. A notable non-conformist minister the Rev Shadrach Davies of Maendy Chapel near Cowbridge was so shocked to see such leisure pursuits taking place on a Sunday that he seized the ball and led the astonished lads across the road and founded a Sunday School in Riwpera Farm. Soon he found so many children and adults attending that he built Peniel Chapel with his own hands! Davies eventually left Wales to establish himself as a preacher in New York. Throughout the 19th century Peniel worshippers greatly outnumbered church members and became the spiritual home of the village for 150 years. The graves themselves still attract visitors from as far afield as Australia to witness their ancestors resting place. On July 15th 1856 a famous explosion occurred at Cymer, Porth and three brothers of the Hugh family of Llanharry were tragically killed, one in his early teens. Amongst the other graves one notices the frequency of Llanharry s oldest families the Rossers and the Yoraths. A number of Llanharry family residents still have family connections to those buried there and still tend their graves. A very famous journalist and radical thinker John Evans, (Silurian) died in 1939, wrote for the Glamorgan Gazette for 50 years and is buried there. His writings in English and Welsh have been a rich archive for numerous scholars and local historians. It is good that Silurian s name is remembered also in a local street name. We are proud of this history and want the best future for a building, where thousands have worshipped over the years. David J. Francis B.A. Local Historian and Author. We are blessed to have truly excellent shows, performances and even a carnival and music festival in recent weeks to bring together people from across the age range, often organised by volunteers who focus all their energies to ensuring our diaries are full of Big Lottery Fund Helping Our Communities Members of the Swansea based Down to Earth project and Big Lottery Fund met up with Ogmore Assembly Member and Welsh Government Minister Huw Irranca-Davies to highlight where Lottery funding is helping community groups, not only here in Ogmore but across Wales. Down to Earth is one of six organisations and charities, brought to the Senedd by the Big Lottery Fund who shared their stories and pride with AMs about how they have taken control of their lives and wellbeing. Down to Earth is using its 423, Big Lottery Fund grant to work around Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Carmarthenshire. They are building an electric vehicle transport pool for refugees fun occasions for all to enjoy. I want to pay tribute to all the volunteers, young and slightly older for their continuing dedication throughout the year, no matter how small their contribution, from hosting to organising or supporting events, I know very many people appreciate it. So it never hurts to say thank you. Throughout recent months I ve been delighted to take part in many of these occasions, including the annual Brynnau PTA carnival which really does get better year on year. A performance of FAME by the superbly talented students of Pencoed Comprehensive school and even got my water proofs on to help clear a section of the river in Llanharan with the dedicated team from Llanharan and Brynna Wimbles. This year has seen a first in our area, in the shape of a musical festival, LLAN ROCKS, organised locally, I was thrilled to see Llanharan, Brynna and Bryncae residents (and from further afield) coming together to enjoy wall-to-wall and asylum seekers. The Big Lottery Fund has announced 34 million funding raised through the National Lottery, which will be available as grants to communities across Wales up to the end of March Recently the Big Lottery Fund re-organised into three regional teams to cover North Wales; Mid and West Wales and South East and Central Wales. This will enable the Big Lottery Fund to be more accessible and better connected to the people and communities of Wales, which in turn will help maximise the impact of National Lottery funding. The Ogmore AM said: It was great meeting with members of the Down to Earth project and Big Lottery Fund to hear about the group and how funding has helped this project and others throughout Wales succeed and thrive. sunshine, live music along with things to do for the kids too. I hope that this new idea can grow and grow in the coming years. Sometimes residents will raise with me that nothing or little happens in our local area, village or town. Or indeed that they feel that more should be done in their local community. Of course we can always provide more events, but on the whole, I believe we are very lucky to have so much going on in our community, be it in our local schools, our church and community halls or in wonderful organisations like the OAP associations, the social clubs, the rugby clubs or indeed in local libraries like Pencoed. There is always the suggestion that a recess from Parliament, is a holiday for MPs, now it is true, I will take a holiday with many family, like many do over the summer months, but I can assure residents that the recess also means a chance to spend more time during the week in the constituency, holding advice surgeries and generally trying to meet with and work for residents on Community groups are the lifeblood and back-bone of our communities and here in Ogmore alone, we have seen some of these successes firsthand. The House Martin s (Men s Shed Cymru) based in Coytrahen, Bridgend Valleys Railway Company Ltd, Tondu Primary School, Bryncethin Tang Soo Do (martial arts group), Special Families Maesteg, Brynawel House issues, that you can t often do when Parliament is sitting. Throughout August I am especially looking forward to the Annual Horticultural Show, as fetes and events right across the constituency. A special good luck to those young people who will be receiving their GCSE and A Level results in August I remember all too well the nervousness of that time (although admittedly now a long time ago!), my only advice would be remember there is a huge amount of support out their, especially if your results aren t quite what you expected them to be and that people will always be there to help. I wish everyone a restful summer, in what I hope will be continued good weather and as ever I m available for constituents via my constituency office, , Chris.Elmore.MP@ Parliament.uk or you can contact me via Facebook at Chris Elmore MP or attend one of my four advice surgeries held across the area every month. Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre, Cylch Meithrin Pencoed (children s playgroup), Ysgol Bryn Castell School. Apart from the dedication and long hours of un-paid work from their volunteers, these groups also need funding to survive and I m sure the financial assistance from the Big Lottery Fund has in some instances provided a life-line to many of these groups.

10 Royal British Legion Llanharan Branch THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION S GREAT PILGRIMAGE 90 WE LL BE THERE! Be assured that the Llanharan Branch of the Royal British Legion will be proudly represented at the Pilgrimage of Remembrance to World War One battlefields. The event culminates in a parade and ceremony in Ypres this August, as part of the centenary commemorations of the end of the First World War. The Royal British Legion event, known as the Great Pilgrimage 90 (GP90), takes place between the 5th and 9th of August, and will be one of the largest in the charity s history. GP90 will mark 90 years since the original Royal British Legion Pilgrimage in 1928, which saw 11,000 World War One veterans and war widows visit the battlefields of the Somme in France and Ypres in Belgium, a decade after the conflict ended. David Jenkins and the writer will represent the Llanharan Branch and the local community at the event, as Standard Bearer and wreath layer respectively. They will tour some of the same battlefields and cemeteries visited by those on the 1928 Pilgrimage, before marching along the original route Quiz Answers Our July quiz was won by Martin Hitchcock of Miskin who will receive a M&S voucher to the value of 20. Thank you to everyone that entered, it was a popular quiz, the answers are as below: 1. Herman s Hermits 2. Rolling Stones 3. Ken Dodd 4. Lulu 5. A Hard Day s Night, Help, Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine and Let It Be 6. Sandie Shaw 7. The Beatles 8. Uriah Heep 9. Bill Haley 10. Madonna 11. Rod Stewart through Ypres to the Menin Gate on the 8th August, bearing the Llanharan Branch Standard and a wreath. They will join more than 2,200 other Legion representatives and dignitaries, including Civic and Military guests from the UK, Commonwealth and Northern Europe who are taking part. Once at the Menin Gate, the writer will lay a wreath on behalf of the Llanharan and Brynna community. David Jenkins, Standard Bearer and Poppy Appeal organiser, proudly proclaims; The Great Pilgrimage 90 is a perfect opportunity for the Legion community to unite together, bearing our standards along the same route in Ypres taken 90 years earlier by veterans and widows of the First World War. The Llanharan Branch is working in partnership with the community to carry a unique Remembrance message to the Menin Gate on their wreath for viewing by the general public until the end of August. On the home front, the July AGM showed no changes in the election of Branch officers and committee. Although, despite a membership of 40 plus, the attendance was disappointingly low, illustrating the drive and good work undertaken by loyal committee stalwarts. Sid Robling 12. Mickey Mouse Club 13. 11 A Talbot Boy Continuing the modest memoir of a period of the life of John Lobb. PART THREE: MY RAF AND COURTING YEARS Act Three Mozart and the Mouse, Barbara and my Bosom Buddy I had a date with Barbara that evening in Cardiff. It was her evening off and she had picked the New Theatre, where Mozart s Marriage of Figaro was playing. I wasn t very interested in classical music, yet I am eternally indebted to her for awakening in me the love of classical music, ballet and opera and, as I subsequently shared my love of painting, art and photography, we mutually enjoyed the music and arts together for 54 years, which was quite wonderful. During my time in college, boys in general would come to lectures with various pets hidden in their pockets or boxes such as rats and non venomous snakes. One particular period of time was a mouse period, when these little fellows would provide hours of entertainment, climbing ladders, spinning wheels and other mouse-related athletics. My cousin John Willy was fascinated by these tiny creatures and constantly pestered his mother, my Aunt Mabel, to allow him to keep a pair. She eventually relented and John asked me to select a good white specimen from the Cardiff market. The purchase of this mouse coincided with my date with Barbara and our evening visit to the New Theatre to see Mozart s Marriage of Figaro. Barbara had assured me it was alight classical opera full of beautiful action and music. We agreed to meet in the New Theatre queue for the gods bench seats at the very top, virtually in the ceiling, but very cheap. We had obviously selected them for their price, not being very flush with cash. In fact, Barbara was probably earning much more in her job in the Capital than me working for the family business. Joining the queue and in the first flush of love, I noted how lovely, sophisticated and grown up she looked. And, of course, so was I, in the capital city at night on a date, queuing to see an opera. It was at this point in my sophisticated stint that I told her about the white rodent I had purchased for John Willy. Her reaction informed me she was not best pleased. is it safe in there, in the box? Can it breathe? I reassured her all was well. I had given it some cereal for supper and it was quite secure, the box all tied down with string. We entered the theatre and made our way up several staircases to the very top tier of the gods to take our seat on the long, secured benches, accommodating maximum bums on seats. In this friendly, close atmosphere, I noted that the person next to me was a very large, jolly, pink-cheeked PHIL BLOSS electrical ALL ASPECTS OF ELECTRICAL WORK INCLUDING INTRUDER ALARMS Part P Approved No job too big or small FREE ESTIMATES with no obligation Telephone Mobile university graduate. Barbara leans over and quietly asks, Have you checked if mousey is okay? I say, All is well. He s probably sleeping. The opera commences. And, yes, the music was -wonderful and the sets on stage simply fascinating! At the interval I purchase Thayers ice creams for us before the curtain rises on the second half. I suppose 25 minutes into the second half I m disorientated by a primeval scream from the pink-cheeked, large lady by my side, who is not only screaming at full volume, but by this time, standing on the bench and yelling blue murder. The emergency lights come on and I look at this large girl in full yell, noting that my white mouse is running across her ample breasts. By this time, as the orchestra continues to play a quiet section, all eyes are transfixed on this screaming young woman. Not having time to think through my next actions, I chase the mouse over her chest, eventually grabbing its tail on her right bosom. Approaching from the sides are two burley attendants who arrive to remove the young woman, who by this time, has collapsed and fainted. Nevertheless, they carried the prostrate young woman off with her companion, the emergency lights are switched off and the opera continues as if nothing had happened. I wait approximately another 15 minutes and advise my date, Barbara, that it possibly might be a good idea to leave ten minutes or so before the end. This we do, making our way down the stairs. On one of the landings, surrounded by her companion, who is giving her sips of water, and the two attendants who carried her out, she thanks me for my swift action and asks me what it was running across her chest. Big mistake! I produce the mouse and once more she screamed like a banshee! Barbara and I ran for the exit, thus ending Mozart and the Mouse. 13 Pontyclun WI Our speaker in June was Audrey Griffiths who took the title Keep The Home Fires Burning for her talk. Audrey asked us to imagine a family from the Valleys reactions when the First World War broke out. Audrey wove a charming story about how the family made it through those difficult times. There were letters home from brothers and sisters who had moved away for war work, as well as from the front. It gave a more personal feel to that dreadful war. Then our intrepid travellers, fifteen in all, headed for Yorkshire. This has become a much loved item in our calendar. We have travelled far and wide over the years but Jan still finds interesting places for us to visit. We arrived mid afternoon, a nice journey up to York where we were based for the few days. A cup of tea, unpacked, changed and it was time for some good food. Of course we then had to walk it off, so some ventured across the bridge into York itself. The following day we headed for Castle Howard, very historic, very beautiful, with a huge garden with all sorts of features. These were explained to us on a short tour with the head gardener. A bonus was the flower festival, where the flowers and plants were spread around the house rather than stuck in a Tent! Weather lovely but hot! The next day across the famous Yorkshire Moors, what absolutely stunning scenery. We stopped at Goathland, of Heartbeat and Harry Potter fame for refreshments, some at the local church with another flower festival, still hot! We carried on to Whitby on the coast. It was Forces Day and absolutely heaving, but a hop on hop off bus took us away from the crowds. We did see the plane that flew over and saluted the forces. A chance to sample the Whitby fish which was so fresh and tasty, and of course an ice cream. Still hot! Then our day in York where we all spread out to go and see what we most wanted to see, some on the tour bus, some on the river, etc. In the late afternoon some went to the Minster for a service, which was very uplifting. What a magnificent place it is, so awe inspiring. Still hot. Every evening we ended up in the bar to chat about our day. Many a funny story emerged! Sadly we had to return on Monday, but a pleasant journey home, mulling over our new memories. Now we get ready for our strawberries and bubbles night with a cellist to entertain us, very Glynbourne. No meeting in August though we do have a trip planned. Sept 18th is the date for your diary 7pm Pontyclun Community (Hope it will still be hot!) Formerly, it was a chapelry belonging to the parish of Coychurch. Its church, St. Peter s has been a forlorn ruin on Mynydd Portref for nearly 200 years and was technically a chapel served by the Rectors of Coychurch from the earliest times. Desolate and forlorn as it may be today, it is still a place I shall never forget seeing for the first time, when with my wife s cousin, I first made the strenuous but bracing climb up the hillsides above Brynna in the late 1960s. I shall never forget the views of the silver ribbon of the Bristol Channel and Exmoor beyond or the rugged heights of the Blaenau to the north. But I was puzzled by the lonely isolation of the church so far removed from the madding crowd! PLANS drawings for Planning & Building Regulations Extensions - Conversions mjdarch575@gmail.com When Stewart Williams of Barry asked me contribute to an article on the Llanharan District to his Glamorgan Historian in 1971 I devoted several pages to Peterston and its ancient church. Later, I included a chapter on the church in my book The Border Vale of Glamorgan, but I soon realised that the place belonged more to the Blaenau than the area I was dealing with! The following notes are based on what I wrote then and also on what my friend Terry Witts told me later on when he was preparing his Forgotten Years series of books. In medieval times, the boundaries of Peterston more or less coincided with those of the manor of Newland, which was an early acquisition by the Turberville Lords of Coity. Later, of course, Newland belonged to the Gamages and the more famous Sidney family of Coity and Penshurst Place in Kent. The old church of St. Peter s was puzzling in that it stood for centuries in lonely isolation well away from any form of settlement, although Llanharan author Sarah Holland Miles says in her book that there were a Buffets for all occasions OLD FARM SHOP, LLANTRISANT COOKED FRESH TO ORDER Weddings, Anniversaries, Birthdays, Christenings, Functions, Funerals, Business Lunches, Christmas Parties etc / Mobile: couple of ruined cottages nearby. The dedication to St. Peter- a popular saint with the Normans- suggests a later dedication than the Celtic ones so common in the Vale of Glamorgan, and it may be that the Norman piecemeal encroachment from Coity saw a rebuilding of the church in the 13th century when they added a new chancel and south porch to the nave. The Turbervilles acquired Llanharry at the same time as Newland, but they did not give the church here a Norman dedication. Incidentally, there are only two further dedications to St. Peter in the Vale, namely at Peterston-super- Ely and Cogan old Church. So we can assume there was an earlier Celtic church on the site and modern archaeological investigation appear to confirm this. In Terry Witts Forgotten Years Volume 3 he stated that the recent finds revealed a beehive shaped Celtic Hermitage of the era and a later rectangular building above it. As I said earlier both Newland and Llanharry were for centuries part of the Coity possessions in Glamorgan. By the 16th century coal mining on a limited scale was carried on in Llanharry (on the FOOD BANK at Carmel Baptist Church, Bridgend Road, Llanharan (Opposite the Drop In Centre) EVERY FRIDAY 10.30am noon Llanharry Meadow) and, of course, iron mining too. But there is no evidence of any in Newland. Probably the coal seams in Peterston parish were too deep to be exploited at this early date. Also, unlike Llanharry, there was no copyhold land or common and wastes. There is no doubt that a pastoral economy was practised, though the 1631 survey of Newland does tell us that there was a Corn Mill. This is not Brynna Mill, but the one in Llanharan. What is puzzling about the parish church is the seeming paucity of people who worshipped or got baptised, married and buried there over the centuries. Before the growth of Brynna in the last couple of decades of the Victorian Age there was, as far as I am aware, no village at all in the parish. In this respect it s a bit like Llanilid. In 1811 there were only 19 houses in Peterston and, apart from a modest mansion and a watermill, the rest of the dwellings were farms and cottages. Thirty years later there were only 27 houses there! As to the distant past I have little information about the church and the pattern of settlement in the parish, but I do know that Edward Lhuyd ( ) the famous Continued overleaf... 16 philologist and antiquarian writing in the late 17th century described St. Peter s Church as a ruinous thing till of late years. It was not quite as isolated as one imagines though for it had stood for centuries on the old ridge way road that ran from Llantrisant to Margam. The unfortunate fugitive King Edward 11 ( ) must have passed close by in his abortive attempt to escape his enemies in 1327 en route to Ireland. He may even have sought refuge in the church! Again the bards of Glamorgan certainly knew about St. Peter s and mentioned it in their poems. In fact, one of the most famous of them Lewis Hopkin ( ) was a native of the parish. The church set amid such splendid mountain scenery was still in regular use, especially for marriages, throughout the 18th century. During the years 1736 to 1740 fourteen marriages were performed there- one more than at the mother church in Coychurch. One of the last brides to be married up at the old church was Gemima Gibbon, of Llanharan, who was wed in 1829 to William Thomas of Peterston. The weather on the hilltop in the winter months was bleak and unpredictable, yet this wedding took place on the 8th of February! For the record the last person to be buried there was 68 years old William Williams, whose body was carried by a sequence of bearers all across the mountains from Aberdare on the 6th of February In the 18th century the church was the meeting place for people other than for worship. It appears from the following extract from the Quarter Sessions held in Neath in July 1731 that certain ale drapers from Cowbridge were fined 6d each for selling ale, ginger bread and cakes in the Churchyard of Peterston-super-Montem on the Lord s Day. Was this a regular market or part of the festival of Gwylmabsant? The Mabsant was a revel often in riotous form and associated loosely with the patron saint of the parish church. In Peterston naturally it was held on St. Peter s Day namely June 29th. There is a full account in Terry Witts third volume of how the Mabsant was suppressed by the fiery eloquence of David Jones of Llangan ( ), the great Methodist preacher. To be fair, the Mabsant festivities in most parishes were far more secular than religious with dancing, sporting activities, drinking to excess and even fighting. Such was the eloquence of Jones when he visited the Peterston revels Ynysmaerdy Community Centre The Centre has a stage for performances, a generous size hall, soft play for children and access to kitchen facilities. There are small break out rooms and plenty of storage making a venue perfect for groups, activities and meetings of all sizes. Hire of the hall is from as little as 5 per hour, therefore if you are interested please visit our Facebook page or contact our booking team on to check availability. So the great man was forced to preach outside on a slip of rock that came to be known to later generations as David Jones Pulpit. It seems the Mabsant ceased being held after this. By 1830 the Coychurch curate, who looked after Peterston, began to look for a patron sufficiently rich to enable him to dismantle the old church and build a new one near to where Brynna village later developed. He could hardly point to a rise in the number of new houses being built or to an expanding population in Peterston. There were still only about 27 properties in the parish. But he nevertheless had cause to complain about the strenuous climb up to the old church, where he often found no one waiting for him! Add to that it seems that the old church was becoming more and more dilapidated. It is fortunate that the enthusiastic curate got a sympathetic hearing from Mrs. Elizabeth Davies of Tregroes. With the support of Edward Copleston, Bishop of Llandaff she promised that she would pay for a new church to be built in Peterston. No one in the parish was opposed to the idea and the church was consecrated in The cost of the new building was only 250 and by 1851 the average attendance was 40 adults with 25 children going to the Sunday School. These are surprisingly high figures! I think I ve discovered who Mrs. Elizabeth Davies was. She was the daughter of Morgan Thomas Squire of Tregroes House and she had married Joseph Davies, about whom I know nothing. A great benefactor to the Pencoed locality she left moneys to help the poor of Coychurch and Pencoed and to maintain a school for the children of Penprisk. She lived just long enough to see the new St. Peter s completed and then duly consecrated by the Bishop. Mrs. Davies was buried at Coychurch on May 25th 1835 aged 86. During the year of dismantling of the old church in 1830 several items were brought down to the new St. Peter s, the most important of which were the Elizabethan Chalice and Paten, the bells and the old registers. New though the church was, it never became the spiritual home of Peterston worshippers in the way that Bethlehem Chapel did in those heady days of Nonconformity. Even after the influx of newcomers at the end of the 19th century that caused Brynna to mushroom into a thriving mining community most people still went to chapel. How St. Peter s survived during those difficult times is a story waiting to be written. In concluding this article I would like to say how pleased I was to hear from Coun. Roger Turner that today s church was successful in obtaining a grant from the Community Facilities and Activities Programme- a Welsh Assembly initiativefor major refurbishing. It included a new roof, kitchen, floor levelling, new seating, disabled toilet, lighting and heating. I hope that St. Peter s proud history of more than 1,500 years will help everyone to continue a Christian witness there and be part of an active community life in Brynna.
