4 SBARC KEY- KLIX June 2014 Prez Sez Field Day was my introduction to a ham radio event. When I was first licensed as a Technician back in the 1960s I had set up a home station with a Heathkit Two-er and made a few contacts, very nervous and new to the whole world of Amateur Radio. As a tech, the HF bands weren t available to me. The local club in Riverside was putting on a Field Day station in the mountains and I was invited along. It was quite exciting, a large group of hams putting up antennas, assembling gear, and then 24 hours of non-stop rapid-fire QSOs. There was teletype, slowscan TV, traffic handling, a little bit of everything and a lot of fun. It was quite a different experience from operating at home as well as my first real exposure to the HF bands and worldwide communication. SBARC has a long history of Field Day operation. We ve gone the mountaintop route but recently it s been a more urban setting. This year we will be at the Camino Real Marketplace near Costco. Please plan on coming by. We d love to get you on the air for a few contacts, but just seeing the SBARC vehicles, saying hello to old friends, and sharing a cup of coffee is fine as well. Sunday morning you can also hit the Farmers Market right next door. You can be of great help starting Friday afternoon, June 27, all night Saturday the 28th and on Sunday the 29th when we take it all down. Contact Tom, N6YX, at or tsaun@cox.net, our Field Day chairman. SBARC won t go dark this summer in terms of meetings! The June meeting is on the 20th, same place, 401 N. Fairview Avenue, Goleta (across from Goleta Library). We have brought back the meeting raffles, and this month the top prize will be a brand new dual-band hand-held radio! Be sure to stop by and test your luck. Also reserve a time to work Field Day if you haven t already. 73 Jay Hennigan, WB6RDV (and you re not!)

5 SBARC KEY- KLIX June 2014 Club Station News by Shackmaster Dave, K6HWN BRICOLEUR, c est un mot que, traduit, en anglais est: A bricoleur is a master repairman of anything, using only the tools and materials at hand. This is a trade in France, but here such people are referred to as handymen or itinerant tinkers. In centuries past in America, these guys would show up at a farm and fix things using just what the farmer had, and they may have brought. But now in this country, things are so cheap and plentiful that we usually buy a new part, or a whole new item. We hams are supposed to be good at this, or some of us actually are. We re supposed to get a station on the air quickly and suddenly without going to buy anything. Your Shackmaster specializes in being a bricoleur. In fact, he collects all kinds of miscellaneous stuff, such as bent pieces of metal that aren t too specialized, and all sorts of other materials, in four drawers in the workbench at the club station. For example, when an antenna switch needs to be mounted, he goes to the drawers, eyeballs the various metal objects, picks one that will do the job, C-clamps it into place, and it s all done in a few minutes without having to buy or fabricate anything. His most recent such job was when a recently purchased IRLP radio s DTMF microphone didn t work with audio, he paralleled the mic element with the original mic that did work, using two properly bent paper clips to connect the microphones connectors. Finally, the DTMF mic was duct-taped to the nearby panel. This all took just a few minutes instead of taking time he didn t have, or costing the club more money, by either purchasing a new microphone or actually wiring them together with one connector. People sometimes badmouth the club station and say, why do you have all this junk? and why don t you make things look perfect? Now you know the reasons. Incidentally, this new IRLP radio frees up a YAESU 7800 radio, which Levi, K6LCM, will reprogram for more challenging uses. The station is in the Santa Barbara Red Cross chapter headquarters, at 2707 State, at Alamar Street. Go down Alamar to the parking lot, and we are the door to the left before the stairs. Open every Saturday morning 9-12, and every Tuesday night, from 7:30-on. Listen for us or call us on our intercom repeater (but we monitor all channels, or call us at the new, direct, club statiophone number, ). 73, come visit!!~ Dave

6 SBARC KEY- KLIX June 2014 Update on Rochlitzer Mike Jogoleff, WA6MBZ Recently, I had contact with Joe Heumphreus, K6DXW, and he said that he found in his paperwork that Catherine Rochlitzer s California, or W6-land, call sign could have been W6DTH. I put in a phone call to the ARRL HQ and they said that they would look that call sign up in the archives and get back to me shortly. I had told them to look in the 1930 s..i also just checked with showed that no one currently holds those call signs, ie, w6dth or w6dtg. A young lady named Amanda from the ARRL HQ called me back and said that W6DTH was assigned as the portable call sign of W6DTG, i.e., the previous call in the sequence. This would have been in 1933 under the rules of the Federal Radio Commission. This commission was terminated and replaced by the new Federal Communications Commission, as of July 1st, This new commission had more powers, and it even took over powers that had been previously assigned to the Interstate Commerce Commission. She went on to say that she had never heard of the portable call sign concept, and that this made the effort worthwhile. W6DTG as a primary call sign, in 1933, was assigned to someone named Jan von Thiel of Jackson, CA. I could not wait to call Tim Rochlitzer, her son, but I did not retain his phone number, and so I went down to his shop off of Milpas Street. Luckily some of his associates were there. They gave me Tim s home phone number without issue. I put in a call to Tim and reminded him of who I was and all, and then I asked him about the call sign, W6DTH. His answer was as follows: Oh wow, I do recall that call sign and that she kept saying W6 Dog Terr Howe, over and over again on the radio. My spelling of the phonetics could be a little off, HI HI. Tim said that he was at school at the time. He also said that the time frame for her getting the license could have been in the 1940s, i.e., just prior to the outbreak of WWII. I phoned Amanda again at the ARRL who gave me a web site, com. The owner, Steve, is a guy who has a good collection of old callbooks and he says on his site that he is willing to help you out with info from these old callbooks if you will send him an and then be patient for the response.

7 SBARC KEY- KLIX June 2014 But, by the May 23rd, I have not heard anything from operator W3HF or his website, and so I can guess that he is not performing the callsign look up service any more. So, it is time to submit this article and let it go at that. 73 de Jug, WA6MBZ Key-Klix is published monthly by the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club, P.O. Tommy Tompkins, K6ATX, created this publication in January Tommy said that key clicks were a headache for any ham and publishing a newsletter for SBARC was a headache for any editor! In June 1954 the spelling was changed from Key-Klicks to Key-Klix. By the third issue, Van Shannon s, W6DJS, Channel Radio Supply was advertising. Tommy drew a comic strip at the bottom of the front page about Amateur Radio or SBARC members. Photographs of the 1978 Hamfest appeared in the Ocober issue of Key-Klix marking the first time photos appeared in our journal. In February 1979 Key-Klix went from a typewritten format to one set by linotype, giving the publication a professional appearance. Dave Smallwood, a linotype operator at the News- Press, was paid a small fee each month by the Club to set the type on Lorin McRae s, WA6ISS, linotype machine. [This device uses molten lead to create each line of type (hence the name.)] Lorin said he never had to proofread Key- Klix when Dave set the type! Lorin then printed the publication on his press, which he has done almost continuously since 1979, at about his cost to do so. [Ed. Note: this was written in 1995, and Key-Klix has been composed and printed on a computer for many years since the writing of this article.] Read more about the history of Key-Klix and SBARC in the August 1995, 75th- Anniversary issue of Key-Klix, in which the above article was first printed.

8 SBARC KEY- KLIX June 2014 Rachael Cline, DPM, Red Cross SBARC Meeting - Friday, June 20, 2014 Darryl Widman, KF6DI It s 5:46 PM and you re a few miles from your home when a fast-moving flat bed truck carrying high pressure corrosive gas cylinders suddenly weaves into your lane in front of you. That sudden move knocked over some cylinders aboard that truck and loosened a valve on one of them. The next cylinder to fall over caused an explosion that started a chain reaction that ended up as a Hazmat Highway to Hell of corrosive gas. You did happen to bring your gas mask, didn t you? FG1LGKieTxY?rel=0 What would you do if a real disaster struck Santa Barbara, Carpinteria or Goleta today or tonight? Would you be prepared? Find out how you can better plan for potential disasters by attending this Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club special presentation by Rachael Cline. Rachael, who hails from New York City, earned her Masters Degree from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and is the Disaster Program Manager at The American Red Cross, Santa Barbara County Chapter. Rachael says that she has asked one or two of her Red Cross preparedness volunteers to give us a presentation on How to Prepare your Families for Disaster. They will bring you a presentation that covers the basics of how to create a personalized disaster plan and how to build your own disaster kit. This is something that you don t want to miss! Rachael is looking forward to introducing herself to the group and will also explain how club members can become volunteers with the Red Cross. By the way, a few weeks ago we gave Rachael and David a tour of the SBARC Club Station. She had not seen it before and was very impressed. Also on the agenda for the evening will be a brief discussion about this year s ARRL-sponsored Field Day, which starts on Friday, June 27, for the setup and goes on the air for 24 hours straight beginning at 11:00 AM Saturday, June 28. Tom, N6YX, is da man in charge. He invites you all to come out to the Camino Real Shopping Center at Storke Rd. and Hollister Ave. and see what you can do to help us to get on the air and make those contacts and to show the public what Amateur Radio is all about. What an opportunity that will be! There is some talk about a BBQ afterwards. Come find out. As you know, we meet at the Goleta Union School District, 401 No. Fairview Ave. across the street from the Goleta Library. The doors should open around 6:45 PM so come early and shake some hands, especially those of Rachael

9 SBARC KEY- KLIX June 2014 and her volunteers. Don t forget to peruse the junque on the Free-to-Good-Home table. Take home what you want. Bring your junque for others to take home. Remember, please take back your junque if no one takes it home. We leave a clean room. Please bring along some cookies or other goodies for the coffee table. We will all appreciate that! Bring along some extra money just in case we have another one of our fun raffles. President Jay, WB6RDV (and you re not), reminds those who want to try their luck/skill at finding the hidden-t to bring whatever they have to do that. Again, the frequency is MHz. See you Friday, June , Darryl, KF6DI 06/02/2014 FCC Takes Action The FCC Enforcement Bureau has made public several warning notices issued over the past few months to radio amateurs. A couple of the letters from Special Counsel Laura Smith involved alleged infractions on 20 meters. On April 15, the FCC wrote Larry S. King, KI8NGS, of Owosso, Michigan, regarding failure to properly follow station identification rules on March 21. Smith told King that he was monitored by staffers at the FCC High Frequency Direction Finding Center (HFDFC) operating your Amateur Radio on MHz for 20 minutes without identifying in a timely manner. Smith said the HFDFC used direction-finding equipment to confirm that the transmissions were coming from his location. She said the Center recorded the transmissions. This incident constitutes a failure to properly transmit your assigned call sign, in violation of the Comission s rules, Smith wrote. Your operation as described is contrary to the basis and purpose of the Amateur Radio Service, as set out in Section 97.1 and is a violation of Section 97.11(a) of the Commission s rules.

10 SBARC KEY- KLIX June 2014 On March 31, Smith sent a warning notice to Daniel G.Churovich, N9RSY, of Ripley, Tennessee, alleging that Churovich engaged in an extended communication on MHz with a station that may not have been operating in the Amateur Service. On Friday, March 28, 2014, you were heard by staff at the Commission s High Frequency Direction Finding (HFDF) Center communicating repeatedly on MHz with an individual who you identify only as cowboy, Smith wrote. This individual failed to provide his call sign during your conversation, a fact that you were aware of as you repeatedly demanded that he provide his name, call sign, and location. Despite being aware of the rule violation on the part of this other individual, you continued communicating with him for an extended period of time. Smith told Churovich that the incident constituted unauthorized transmissions in violation of Commission rules that permit radio amateurs to engage in twoway communications with other stations in the Amateur Service. There is no evidence that the individual with whom you were communicating with on March 28 was an Amateur Radio operator, as he failed to provide his call sign as required by Commission rules, Smith pointed out. Smith also wrote to Amateur Radio licensees in Tennessee, Michigan, and Wisconsin, to note that they all had failed to comply with formal written requests not to use local repeater systems. Smith advised four licensees that the FCC expected them to abide by the request of the trustee and/or control operator that you stay off [the repeater] and any other similar requests to cease operations on any other repeaters by any other repeater licensees, control operators or trustees. The warnings went out on March 31 to Robert J. Doll, WQ4E, and Todd W. Phillips, N4QWZ, both of Greenbrier, Tennessee; Bryan K. Waddell, W9MUP, of Monroe, Wisconsin, and Stacy Hunt, KB8RNN, of Yale, Michigan. Smith advised all recipients that any recurrence of the alleged violation after receipt of the warning letter could subject them to severe penalties, including license revocation, monetary forfeiture (fines), or a modification proceeding to restrict the frequencies upon which you may operate. Fines normally range from $7500 to $10,000, she concluded. Read the full ARRL story

11 SBARC KEY- KLIX June 2014 Read the warning notices Please remember to identify with your Ham call every 10 minutes. Sometimes Hams, especially when working events and using tactical callsigns, forget to use their Ham call as required. The FCC is enforcing the rules Station identification. (a) Each amateur station, except a space station or telecommand station, must transmit its assigned call sign on its transmitting channel at the end of each communication, and at least every 10 minutes during a communication, for the purpose of clearly making the source of the transmissions from the station known to those receiving the transmissions VE Sessions Darryl Widman, KF6DI The next VE Testing Session will be July 12, Whenever you feel you are ready to become an Amateur Radio operator or take an exam to upgrade your present class of license, please give me a phone call during the week just prior to the exam date. The number to call in Santa Barbara is (805) Test Dates: - Saturday, July 12, Call for location - Saturday, August 10, 2014 (Hamfest) - Call for location - Saturday, September 13, Saturday, November 8, 2014 Register: Candidates should pre-register at least three days in advance of the session with the VE Contact. (Pre-registered candidates will have first preference.) Bring: If a candidate has a license or a still-valid Certificate of Successful Completion of Examination (CSCE), the original and a copy of each must be brought to the session. The examiners on the VE team also need to see two forms of identification, at least one with your photo ID such as a driver license. A fee of $15.00 is charged to cover out-of-pocket expenses of the SBARC VE team and the VE Coordinator at ARRL headquarters in Newington, CT.

12 SBARC KEY- KLIX June 2014 Hans passed through Santa Barbara a couple of years ago and one evening tuned in to our QRP Net on K6TZ. At that time I was wanting a schematic diagram for a Heathkit model HW-8, which he could send me. I found out that Hans was in need of tips for his big Wen soldering gun, which I had. We worked out a swap. Just recently I heard from Hans by letter. Here it is for all to read. Hi Darryl, I guess I am behind the times as far as soldering equipment goes. I haven t been doing much and so between the Wen gun and an old Radio shack 30-Watt iron, I m well equipped. And for that reason also, I am sure (and thankful) that with the tips from you I will never run out. I recently (partly stimulated by a fellow-faulty member (also retired) to try JT65, [ the mode that sounds like doodly-doodly-doo on the air. Perhaps you are familiar with it I had an amazing experience with it yesterday. I am not yet set up to transmit, but I tuned in one of the frequencies. I have the software loaded and what I had was just noise ((10138 khz) and when I looked at my screen later there was the call sign (AA9L) of a colleague who likes to play with JT65. What had happened was that the microphone in my laptop on the other side of my little room heard the noise and out of it decoded the totally inaudible signal. This mode is certainly an extreme stretch of what can be done with low power if there is very slow information rate. I used to illustrate to students what a noisy environment does by saying what one would do in a boiler room: simple commands, slowly pronounced. If you want more information content you have to add more power talk louder. I have a stealth setup either indoor antennas or 30 ft. of wire along the brick outside, which I will hopefully be able to reinstall this week. I could use the W9HHX station, but that is mostly used by students (Milwaukee School of Engineering ARC). I can tell that soon I will be 85 and travel isn t quite as exciting any more as it once was. --- Ok, Darryl, it was nice chatting with you. The best wishes and may electrons always treat you kindly! 73, Hans, AE9G My reply to Hans Hi Hans, Letter from Hans, AE9G Darryl Widman, KF6DI Thank you for your kind letter. I did receive it a few weeks ago and am finally getting back to you!

13 SBARC KEY- KLIX June 2014 It s a funny thing about those soldering iron tips. In this day and age we all use these 30 watt soldering pencils or soldering station irons. However, once in a while we still need to do some heavy-duty soldering where the heat from the fine-point irons just is inadequate for the job. That s when the power of a soldering gun is needed. In my opinion, the Wen soldering guns were far superior to the Weller units. I still have 2 of them here. I m talking about the big 200-watt guns. They re heavy but sure do the job when a lot of heat is required. Hans, should you happen to go through those 2 tips I sent you, let me know if you need more. Believe it or not, I still have a supply of them here in the shack. Sorry to say that in Santa Barbara the QRP net has gone by the wayside as hardly any is interested in operating low power modes except, perhaps, for the PSK operators. It s not like the good old days. But, what is? Anyway, it was very nice hearing from you and I wish you 73. Darryl Widman, KF6DI Santa Barbara, CA FIELD DAY 2014 JUNE SBARC Needs Ops! 15 15 SBARC KEY- KLIX June 2014 Newbies on 2-m Possibly the silliest situation we have in Amateur Radio is that nearly all newcomers buy 2m handhelds only to find that they can t hit that many repeaters, there aren t that many guys on 2m anymore, and the old men that are on 2-m won t talk to them, anyway. We should all try to do something about this. If you have a 2-m radio in the shack, turn it on while you re there. If you hear a guy give his call sign, return the call, even if you don t recognize the callsign. You could be missing an interesting conversation, and you re certainly missing a chance to improve amateur radio in your area. Last night, I did just that. Shortly after turning on the rig, I heard KD8YQZ listening. I was fooling around with something and thought about not calling him back, but then decided that whatever it was I was doing, was certainly not important enough to not talk to this guy. As it turned out, Tom had just passed the test at Dayton last Saturday, and his callsign appeared in the FCC database on Tuesday. How cool is that? Shortly after we started talking Todd, KD8WPX, broke in and we started a round-robin QSO. These were two younger guys, and not only were they interested in Amateur Radio, but also in the local maker groups. I was able to point them in the right direction on both counts. It was also an Elmer moment. I taught the younger guys about the courtesy tone and about round-robin QSOs. I hope that it was as positive an experience for both of those guys as it was for me. What I want you to take away from this is that you should turn the radio on when you re in your shack or out in the garage, and monitor the repeaters. Not only that, return the call when you hear someone come on. If you don t, I don t want to hear any complaints from you about how there s no 2-m activity anymore or how ham radio is getting to be just a bunch of old guys.
