4 SBARC KEY- KLIX Key-Klix for 2013 As your new editor and a new ham, I am looking forward to learning from all you experienced Hams by reading all the news items you send me for printing in Key-Klix. I continue to be amazed at the knowledge you all have concerning electronics, radio operation, and antennas and the generosity in which you are willing to share your knowledge. Please continue to share your knowledge, and when called upon, please write articles and reports of activities for printing in Key-Klix. Send them to me by at. Many of you have graciously sent articles to the editor in the past; please continue to do so. As a new ham, I would like to publicly thank my mentors who have helped me over the past two years. First is Mike Wapner K6QD, VP Education & Training, my instructor in both the technician and general classes. He is an excellent and dedicated instructor. After I bought my 2 meter Wouxun HT, Mike Jug Jogoleff WA6MBZ programmed it for me. Then Rick Whitaker KG6VLB, VP free BBQ afterwards at the Carriage Museum at Pershing Park. I must have done all right as he kept letting me volunteer for every event after that. And then my showed me how to operate it. I only need an antenna now to get on the air or Helping at the registration table at the SWHamcon in Buellton in September Ginger Snap and Santa Barbara as her home port. Since we were from Santa Barbara, my husband and I engaged her in conversation. We became friends and had lost touch when we moved back to convention in Buellton. We have since reconnected and have gone sailing on Sea Wind. Life is good. Dorothy KJ6UGL

6 SBARC KEY- KLIX SBARC August General Meeting at his business SIKAMA International where he manufactures and provides soldering equipment to international and domestic companies. Following is Darryl s thank you to Sig:and photos of the visit. On behalf of the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club, I want you to know how we all appreciated your congeniality and hospitality last Friday evening when you gave the members of our club a most interesting tour of your Sikama International business. To a man (or woman) we all enjoyed being with you at your place. Those of us who came gained a new appreciation of what you and your son have established in the manufacturing industry. It is obvious why your company is held in such high esteem. Again, thank you, Sig, for the wonderful evening. Your providing refreshments for us just topped off the good time! 14 DRTE 100 (Dirt-Road-Trail Endurance) Race and Santa Barbara Trail Run June 14-16, 2013 The SBARC Rover, parked next to our Net Control station (in the RV) on East Camino Cielo Rd. vide instant radio contact with all our Ham operators, from Rancho Oso out to Divide Peak. It was a great endurance event, one to separate the men from the evening and ending on Sunday. The endurance test was not only for the race participants but was also for the SBARC volunteer Hams whose participation was crucial to the success of the race. More volunteers are always needed. Contact Rick Whitaker KG6VLB at. It s a good way for new Hams to get involved and get experience talking on their HTs. Harry Rouse K6PDQ. 15 Last Code Test Given in the United States the FCC did away with the code test elements for a ham ticket, a chain of events started. We may not know the outcome of the changes, or their advantages or disadvantages, for many years to come. someone had to take the very last one. As it turns out, Will Campbell, a junior high school student at Dos Pueblos High School in Santa Barbara, California, became the last person in the United States to be tested on the Morse code. Will had become interested in telegraphy, and wanted to be tested. The last test was administered at the Santa Barbara County Health Auditorium by Volunteer Ex- The concept of putting on the very last Morse code exam in the United States was the brain child of Volunteer Examiner Team Contact Person Darryl Widman, KF6DI. At midnight, Eastern Standard Time, there would be no more code exams given in our country. The exact moment to begin the exam was carefully calculated so that no exam given by another VE Team in the country could possibly be squeezed in before that deadline thus taking the honor away for themselves. With the ticking sounds of WWV heard in the background at very low volume and everyone waiting for the play button to be pressed on the And yes, Will Campbell passed it.
