4 FROM THE DESK OF Fire Chief Paul Strelchuk. Come, Join Our Team! "Why would I want to do that?" you ask. Well there happen to be a lot of great reasons! At present, our members number 31, eight of which are full-time (six 24hr personnel, one EMS coordinator and our Fire Chief) and 23 part-time/paid-on-call. All of which are the first of the great reasons! Our Fire Department is an expertly functioning team that answers the call for help, whatever that may be, from a heart attack, or a car accident, or for a structure fire. It is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to be an active part of Oakland Township, while enjoying the camaraderie of our team. Another great reason is that there is no cost to you! We will provide all of the necessary equipment and training. You will learn valuable skills that may help save a life someday. So, come on in to the Township hall and fill out an application! We look forward to working with you! ACT OF KINDNESS COMMUNITY EFFORT The Act of Kindness program sponsored by the Older Persons Commission (OPC) extends to the senior citizen residents of Oakland Township. This program is designed to assist seniors who have limited incomes with specific home repair needs. The goal of the Act of Kindness program is to help seniors remain in their homes living independently and with dignity. To qualify a senior must be 60 or older, have their limited income verified, and live in Oakland Township, Rochester or Rochester Hills. A call to the Senior Resource Office begins the process. Eligibility is verified. A volunteer, skilled workman determines the extent and cost of the repair. Pledges are called in and repairs begin. Act of Kindness stories are varied. Replaced hot water tanks, a repaired porch, and several painting and plumbing issues have been taken care of in Call for more information. OPC Meet with the Supervisor Second Monday of each month, 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, in the OPC Main Cafeteria. This is an opportunity to discuss topics of interest in Oakland Township with the Supervisor. Issues are wide ranging and the discussion is completely open. Your participation is encouraged. Hope to see you there soon!

7 45th ANNUAL CLEAN SCENE Saturday, May 3rd It is time to hit the road again and collect the litter and debris that old man winter left behind on Oakland Township s roadsides. Each year dedicated volunteers become part of the solution in helping keep our township looking great! This year s event will be held on Saturday, May 3rd. Participants gather at 9:00am at the Township Hall for sign in, bag pick-up and refreshments. Volunteers choose the roads they intend to clean before hand or are assigned a road on Clean Scene Day. After checking in, volunteers head to their morning s trash collection location. Volunteers with pick-up trucks are also needed to patrol the township, collect the filled bags and bring them back to the compactor truck at Township Hall. When all the litter is in the bag, volunteers gather back at the Township Hall for lunch and camaraderie! Anyone can volunteer. Youth and scout groups are welcome and can earn community service credits. Please wear hard soled shoes, work gloves and clothes appropriate for the weather conditions. Clean Scene is a rain or shine event. Get involved, gather your groups, friends, and co-workers to improve the appearance of township roads, and get to know your neighbors. To volunteer contact Trustee Maureen Thalmann at or at mthalmann@oaklandtownship.org

9 SEPTIC SYSTEM INFORMATION Septic systems operate by separating solid and liquid wastes. The solids, called sludge, settle to the bottom of the septic tank. The sludge is covered by a layer of water, and anaerobic bacteria slowly breaks down the sludge. There is another layer on top of the water called scum. As the septic system breaks down the sludge, it disperses the liquid into a tile field. Approximately 10 percent of the liquid is evaporated and the remaining liquid is dispersed through the soil, which filters out any bacteria. The minimum required liquid capacity of a septic tank is 1,000 gallons. For residential use in Oakland County, the minimum size allowed increases by 250 gallons for each bedroom in excess of four. Septic systems can not be 2,500 gallons or greater without special approval from the county. Septic fields are not allowed to drain into any open ditch, highway, drain, any body of water or to the surface of the ground. A septic, or tile, field is comprised of a series of 4-inch perforated pipes covered by tiles. A minimum 6 inches of stone is required underneath the tile field and a minimum 2 inches is required above the field. The septic field must be constructed in a sandy area, as opposed to clay. The size of the tile field is determined by the anticipated water use and structure of the subsoil, with a minimum 190 to 250 square feet of absorption area per bedroom required, based on soil conditions. The septic field is required to be covered by 8 to 30 inches of soil. According to the Oakland County Health Division, maintenance of a septic system can lengthen its life expectancy. Pumping the septic tank regularly is a primary way to maintain a tank. This reduces the sludge available to move into the tile field. It's recommended that tanks be pumped every one to three years, preferably in the spring. Keeping tabs on the septic tank's condition is essential. By having a septic tank pumper check various parts of the system, individual parts can be replaced before an entirely new system is necessary. Placing chemicals into the septic system can destroy bacteria needed to digest sludge and may also pollute groundwater. Similarly, yeast and chemical additives may slow down the digestion process and cause sludge to empty into the tile field. Any material that can clog the septic system also needs to be avoided. Limiting the amount of water sent through a septic system is another way to maintain a septic field. Activities that utilize a large amount of water, like laundry, should be spread out over an extended period of time, instead of washing all of the laundry in one afternoon. When the septic system overflows, the soil becomes saturated and absorption stops and sewage backs up in pipes or flows out onto the ground. Maintaining the area above the septic field is vitally important. Heavy objects - like vehicles - should not be kept over the tile field. The soil must retain its natural makeup to effectively treat waste water. Planting grass or bushes above a septic field is recommended to help limit the moisture in the ground, but any plants with deep roots can damage a septic system. There are several signs that a septic system is failing: black water with a foul odor that backs up in drains or the toilet; toilets that flush slowly, even with the use of plungers or drain cleaners; and surface water ponds on top of the septic drain field. This is a sign that either the system is not able to "breathe" right or the system is overloaded with water and can not accept any more. Green grass over the drain field during dry weather is another sign of trouble. The grass may absorb excess water and nutrients which should be moving downward in the soil. Yet another clue that the septic system is flawed is weed or algae buildup in nearby lakes or ponds. The septic system may be discharging waste water and nutrients to this area rather than treating it underground.

18 Oakland Township Library Services - DO YOU KNOW THIS? Oakland Township contracts for full library services with the Rochester Hills Public Library thereby entitling all residents, plus those who work in Oakland Township, library cards from the RHPL. Since the Rochester Hills Public Library is a member of the Library Network, our Oakland Township cardholders have reciprocal rights to check out and return materials at numerous libraries throughout the Detroit area. Also, for those Oakland Township residents who may be planning to spend some vacation time in another part of beautiful Michigan this summer, the RHPL participates in the MI-LibraryCard program (formerly the MichiCard program), which allows our residents to borrow print materials at participating libraries throughout the state. To participate in this program, cardholders must bring their cards to the Rochester Hills Public Library information desk where it may be upgraded by means of an attached sticker. It is also important to call ahead to verify that the library you are interested in visiting is still participating in this program. Oakland Township Residents: If you do not yet have a library card for yourself or your children, NOW is a good time to get one at the Rochester Hills Public Library located in downtown Rochester. CHRISTMAS IN ACTION Christmas in Action of Oakland County, Inc., Northeast Council, is a 501(c)3 non-profit that uses volunteers to perform free home repairs for low income seniors in Addison, Oakland, Orion, and Oxford Townships. The goal is to enable our home owners to safely remain in their homes. Join us and experience the difference a day can make. The last Saturday of each April volunteers equipped with donated materials from area businesses spend the day improving our community one-house-at-a-time. This year we will be working on four homes, as well as doing Rake-N-Runs at several locations. There are no special skills required other than a servant s heart and a willing spirit. Our volunteer meeting will be held at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Orion on Tuesday, April 15 beginning at 6:30 pm. If you are unable to attend the meeting, you can still volunteer for the workday on Saturday, April 26. For more information please contact Larry Hice at or larryhttp@aol.com.
