Inquiry Responses (See Document in MRB Folder to Cut/Paste Text) Updated 04/05/2006 Accommodations For detailed information on accommodations, you should contact the Wyoming Business Council Travel and Tourism for their travel guide. You can do this through their website or by calling Alcova Reservoir With regard to Alcova Reservoir, this area is managed by Natrona County--it is not a state park. You may visit the Natrona County Travel & Tourism Council website at or telephone From the website there is a link to the Bureau of Land Management site for further information at (area 15). For information about the water level, it may be best to call Natrona County Travel. Arts in the Parks Per Wendy Bredehoft 6/28/ This was a one time event that occurred a couple of years ago in conjunction with a calendar design and Art in the Parks exhibition that we held. Unless Pat and Phil want to reinstate the project, it currently no longer exists. Phil s response to a related inquiry: As to your inquiry about a program for artists to stay in State Parks to paint pictures of the park and animals, the latter half of that was once true. In other words, we had for I believe a couple of years before I came to the department a program where artists painted or otherwise depicted animals or objects or scenery, etc. in our state parks. A contest was then held to determine what art would go into a calendar of State Parks art. We discontinued that program for lack of funding last year, I regret to say. If there is sufficient interest and now that we are (or will be in a couple of days) in a new funding cycle, there could be a renewal of that program. I hope this helps, and please feel free to ask any question at all concerning Wyoming's Arts, Parks or History. Back Packing/Hiking Who you need to contact in the Cody area depends on the specific area you plan to hike in. The following website provides information for the National Park Service, Shoshone National Forest, and Bureau of Land Management including contact information. 1

In addition, you can contact the State Lands office at Forestry at Something you are most likely aware of as experienced back packers, are the wildlife issues. Please keep in mind that there are bear in the Cody area--we have grizzly bear in the western part of the state as well as black bear in various locations throughout the state. You may want to visit the Wyoming Game and Fish Department webpage for more information at The webpage includes information and links for safely visiting bear and mountain lion country. Bears/Mountain Lions We do have grizzly bear in the western part of the state as well as black bear in various locations throughout the state. You may want to visit the Wyoming Game and Fish Department webpage for more information at The webpage includes information and links for safely visiting bear and mountain lion country. There are no bear-related restrictions at Curt Gowdy State Park or any of our other state parks. You may want to visit the National Park Service's website for information on Yellowstone at Biking in Parks In general, biking is allowed in our state parks on designated roads and trails. Buffalo Bill State Park has 2 trails, Trout Creek Nature Trail and Eagle Point Trail. You should contact the park superintendent, Ron Livesay, to verify whether biking is allowed off-trail--the superintendent determines this based on the specific site conditions. Ron's phone number is Birth Certificates Vital Records Service at (307) (If older than 50 years, Archives might have it.) BLM Land We have an overall map which depicts the state parks only. We do have individual maps for each park which provide BLM information only if there is BLM land surrounding the park/site. You may wish to contact the BLM Wyoming State Office at or 6256 for the BLM information. Boat Clubs/Marinas: Boysen Marina and Campground 827 Brannon Rd. Shoshoni, WY Tel: Glendo Marina 383 Glendo Park Rd. 2

Glendo, WY Tel: Keyhole Marina P.O. Box 617 Moorcroft, WY Tel: Boating There is no cost at our State Parks to put your boat in the water. If you tow it in with your RV/camping unit you would purchase a permit for that unit only. Second vehicle permits are available for $5 each Daily Use and Camping (so $10 if your second vehicle is in the park overnight). You would need a second vehicle permit if, for example, you drive your RV and a separate truck towing your boat. You may want to visit the Wyoming Game and Fish website for information on what boat registrations are needed at The regulations are established by the Wyoming Game and Fish. You may visit the Wyoming Game and Fish Department's website at or call for detailed information. Boat Rentals Glendo There is nothing through the State Park system, but there is a marina at Glendo which may offer boat rentals. I would suggest you contact the Wheatland-Platte County Chamber of Commerce as they would have information on any boat rental companies in the area. They have a website at or phone Bookstore/Gift Shop The following sites have gift shops. Please keep in mind that they may or may not offer books--each site is unique. Wyoming State Museum, Beth Miller, BMILLE1@state.wy.us Trail End State Historic Site, Cynde Georgen, CGEORG@state.wy.us South Pass City State Historic Site, Joe Ellis, JELLIS@state.wy.us Ft. Bridger State Historic Site, Linda Newman Byers, LNEWMA@state.wy.us Ft. Fetterman State Historic Site AND Ft. Phil Kearny State Historic Site, Bob Wilson, RWILSO@state.wy.us Wyoming Territorial Prison, Tom Lindmier, TLINDM@state.wy.us Buffalo Bill State Park Per Ron Livesay 3/12/2004 We have to wait until there's no longer any threat of floating ice sheets drifting into the bays where the ramps are located (my Asst. told me that was the case just yesterday morning at North Shore). 3

Our new docks cost $20,000 each and the plastic floats under each section can be damaged by the ice. We're trying to be responsible with public funds. Other docks will go in as conditions allow; at Bartlett Lane (where there is still ice in that bay) and at South Shore (when the reservoir level rises enough to use that particular ramp). As for the fish cleaning station; it will be readied for use when there's no longer a threat of freezing the above-ground water hose (used for clean-up) at the station. Buffalo Herds Per Todd Stevenson, Hot Springs State Park Superintendent, 1/9/2004. While the overall program is managed from here at Hot Springs State Park (HSSP) we do have two separate herds at two different parks in our system. The main herd is located here at HSSP and at this time consists of twelve adult animals, four yearlings and up to eight calves during the summer months. Bear River State Park is our other park that does have bison on display. Their herd has eight adult animals and can have as many as seven calves on a given summer. In addition, we do have approximately six "state" cows being managed at a private bison ranch in the Devil's Tower area. Per John Bruner, Principle Engineer, 1/16/2004: At HSSP, we have just under 800 acres of pasture for the bison. Brand ID#A , Location LHB is assigned to Cabins for Rent We do not have cabins for rent/lease through the park system, only campsites at specific parks that take reservations. You may wish to access the Wyoming Business Council Travel and Tourism website at to request their travel guide which lists accommodations. Camping 14-day Limit The 14-day limit stated in Section 7 means that you can stay a maximum of 14 consecutive days during any 30-day period at that state park. You can move to another state park and stay for 14 consecutive days following this same rule--you do not have to leave the state park system entirely. Campsites Limits Per Bill Westerfield 1/2004: For our reservable campsites we limit each site to not more than 8 occupants. The reservable sites make up about 10% of our total designated sites. 4

In all of our other designated sites and anywhere else where camping is allowed (we have some free form areas without designated sites) there is not any limit to the number of occupants allowed. Campsites Sharing Camping sites can be shared; however, each unit (powered vehicle, motor home, camping bus, trailer, tent, etc.) must pay the camping fee (resident $6.00, non-resident $12.00 per night). Campsites Reserved Site Area Yes, you can camp in the "reserved site area" prior to May 15th when the reservation center begins taking reservations. Camping is on a first-come, first-served basis in the reserved site area until May 14th and then again after September 30th (reservations are taken May 15th - September 30th yearly). There is no additional fee to use the reserved area outside the time-frame when reservations are taken--your annual daily use and camping permit will suffice. Cemeteries/Family History Search For a listing of cemeteries, you can contact Scott Harrington at He works for the Cheyenne City Parks and Recreation Department (this falls under city government) and should have a listing for the state as a whole. You might need to contact each cemetery individually for a listing of grave sites, but I'm not certain about this. Scott will know. Crazy Woman Creek The following websites provide information on Crazy Woman Creek and Battlefield located in Johnson County, Wyoming: The Wyoming Game and Fish Department also has a publication available entitled "Wyoming Stream Names" that you can purchase by visiting This covers not only Crazy Woman Creek but other interesting streams in Wyoming. CURT GOWDY Shooting west of Curt Gowdy (in Medicine Bow Nat l Forest) is allowed October 1 March 31 annually. Within the Wyoming State Park system we have Hynds Lodge located at Curt Gowdy State Park which is available for reservation. Facilities include a gas range with oven, refrigerator, 4 folding tables, folding chairs, beds for 20 people, restrooms and a fireplace (you supply the wood). There is also a small stream and nature trail, horseshoe pits, 5

basket ball and volleyball. Use of the lodge is $75 per day plus a $150 damage deposit that will be refunded if the lodge is left clean and without damage. Daksoft / Spherix as of 2004 You can purchase the annual daily use and camping permits online at or call However, the permits themselves cannot be issued until January 1 st either on-line or at headquarters in Cheyenne.. As an alternative, Gift Certificates for the upcoming year are available prior to January 1 st. Dogs/Pets With regard to your dogs, they are welcome in the parks, but we ask that they be kept on a leash no longer than 10 feet or within your camper/vehicle at all times. In addition, we also appreciate pet owners who "leave no trace" and pick up after their pets. Dry Creek Reservoir Located in Johnson County, Wyoming, at N. latitude; W. longitude. Off of Hwy. 196 west of the city of Kaycee. Complaints I have forwarded your concern to Pat Green, Division Director for State Parks and Historic Sites. Pat has requested that he be made aware of all input from our visitors, both positive and negative, so he can personally look into any concerns that arise. I'm sorry to hear that you did not have an enjoyable experience. Thank you for bringing this to our attention and for your frankness. 6

Fees 2007 The annual resident fee for overnight camping is $55 as you do need both the annual day use and annual camping permits. However, there are exceptions. If you plan to camp at Connor Battlefield Historic Site, Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site or Sinks Canyon State Park there is no Daily Use fee charged. Therefore, you only need a camping permit--so your cost for the annual permit would be $30. If you only intend to camp at these three sites, please stop by the State Museum Store with your purchase documents and you can return the Daily Use permit. Following is the complete fee structure for 2007: With regard to camping fees, for non-residents the fee is $40 for the annual Daily Use and $60 for the annual Camping ($25 and $30 for residents). If you plan to visit for only the day, you will need the Daily Use permit. If you plan to camp you will need both the Daily Use and Camping permits. You can also "pay as you go." The non-resident fees are as follows: $4 Daily Use (parks); $2 Daily Use (historic site); $12 Overnight Camping (single night, includes daily use fee). Resident fees are: $2 Daily Use (parks); $1 Daily Use (historic site); $6 Overnight Camping (single night, includes daily use fee). When you purchase the annual permits you do not pay additional Day Use or Camping fees through December 31 of the year of issue at any of our State Parks and Historic Sites. Your fees are covered no matter which park or historic site you visit. The only exception is when there is a special event being held at the park/site, such as the Ft. Bridger Rendezvous or Ft. Fetterman Days. There is a nominal fee charged for entrance during these types of events because the fees go back to support the event in the future. The Daily Use fee for State Parks is per car. However, the Daily Use fee for historic sites is per person. I know this is a lot of information, but I hope it is helpful. Our fee structure is established by State Statute ( ) and through much detail establishes our guidelines. Fire Bans 2006 Tiki torches are considered an open flame and are typically not allowed when fire restrictions are in-place. As of 4/5/2006 no fire bans are currently in place. Flaming Gorge Flaming Gorge is a National Recreation Area within Ashley National Forest. You can visit and choose the link for Ashley National Forest for camping areas and to make a reservation. The reservation center phone number is

I hope this is helpful. Enjoy your visit! Sincerely, Monica Bovis Float Plane/Sea Plane Operating floatplanes on Wyoming's bodies of water does not fall under Wyoming State Parks specifically. We manage the land surrounding the water; however, the water itself is managed by the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR), which is a federal agency. I suggest you contact the Wyoming Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division (website ) They are well versed in the Federal Aviation Administration regulations. The Wyoming Game and Fish is also a good source of information for waterrelated issues. Their website is If after speaking to these 2 entities you have questions about the Special Use Permit, each Park Superintendent would need to be contacted as it relates to their park. Seminoe Glendo Boysen Pathfinder Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Federal Agency Cheyenne Office Fort Bridger Hours Winter Hours - Fort Bridger site grounds are open year-round 8:00 a.m. to sunset daily, weather permitting. The Museum is open 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m weekends. The Bridger/Vasquez Trading Co. is in fact closed until April 30th. If you can arrange it with your travel schedule, the best time to visit Fort Bridger would be on the weekend while the Museum is open. The grounds themselves are very interesting, but the Museum does add a lot to the visit. Fort Bridger/Morman Purchase The following websites provide more information about Fort Bridger and the Morman purchase. 8

Fort Bridger Rendezvous The Rendezvous will take place again this Labor Day weekend. At this time, we don't have the specific event information and suggest that you contact the Fort Bridger Rendezvous Association, Traci Hardy, at or You may access the following website for information on the Rendezvous The fee for visiting historic sites is $1.00 for residents and $2.00 for non-residents (per person). There is no charge for persons 17 years or under at historic sites. If you are visiting during the Rendezvous, the fee is $2.00 per person for 12 and older, but if you arrive in full mountain man/woman dress you get in free. Fort Fetterman/Photo in Tom Lindmier Book Per Arlene Ekland-Earnst, Wyoming Pioneer Memorial Museum, 10/24/ I'm sorry to tell you that our image is merely an 8x10 copy and not the original. We don't know from who or when it came to us. It almost looks as though it were part of a panorama shot to me. It shows about half of the fort. I will zerox a copy and get it in the mail for your examination. Per Tom Lindmier 10/20/ The photograph in question is at the Pioneer Museum in Douglas, Wyoming. I found the image over 20 years ago behind an exhibit case. They didn't know the photo was of Fetterman or that it existed. I brought it to the attention of the curator at that time and she allowed me to copy the image using a large format camera. The image in the museum was an 8 x 10 glossy print as I remember, not the original. As I recall there was no donor information but I would recommend that you contact Arlene Ekland-Earnst for that information. Fort Fetterman/Hog Ranch For information on Hog Ranch, a saloon-type establishment, you can visit the following websites: Test that is available: Fort Fetterman and the Old Hog Ranch by Claude McDermott 36:1:44 In addition, there are two books that were written about The Ranch. They are "Hog Ranches of Wyoming" by Larry K. Brown and "Drybone: A History of Ft. Fetterman" by Tom Lindmier, who happens to be one of our Superintendents and our historical expert. I haven't had the opportunity to read the book by Mr. Brown, but "Drybone" does contain 9

detailed information about the happenings at Hog Ranch as well as factual information such as who owned it during what period of time. Fort Fred Steele There is also a book written by Dr. Mark Miller, Wyoming State Archeologist entitled, "Hollow Victory: The White River Expedition of 1879 and the Battle of Milk Creek." It was published in 1997 by the University Press of Colorado, P.O. Box 849, Niwot, CO 80544, Ph. (303) We have two copies of this book in our Museum Store. The cost is $29.95 if you are interested. Dr. Miller also mentioned that there was an article from the Annals of Wyoming in 1972 by Robert Murray you might be interested in. You can go to the following website to contact the Wyoming State Historical Society I also found the following on this website: Annals of Wyoming: The Wyoming History Journal Spring 2002, Volume 74, Number 2 Editor: Phil Roberts Target Practice and Firing Ranges at Fort Fred Steele" by Mark D. Hanson Soldiers during the frontier period were required to practice marksmanship. Hanson reveals the possible locations of firing ranges at one of Wyoming's frontier military posts, Fort Fred Steele. He argues that target practice on the frontier required similar materials and facilities as practice elsewhere in the 19th century military. Gas Hills Trap, Wyoming The Gas Hills Trap area doesn't fall within the areas that we manage under the Trails Program. Therefore, I suggest that you contact the BLM Wyoming State Office at or 6256 for the BLM information land information. In addition, I can provide you with contact information for Lee Yake. He is on our Trails advisory board and is very equine knowledgeable. Lee Yake P.O. Box 3194 Gillette, WY yake@intrig.com Phone: work home Genealogy/Family Research I have done some additional inquiring about which entity might be able to assist you with your request. I will be forwarding your letter to Wyoming State Archives and Historical Research, 2301 Central Avenue, Barrett Bldg. 1 st Floor, Cheyenne, WY NOTE: THIS INCLUDES OLD COURT DOCUMENTS 10

Generators Yes, we will waive this rule for support systems needed for medical conditions. You will just need to notify the Park Superintendent of the site you will visit. If you know this please advise me and I can provide you with the direct phone number(s) and (s). You might want to advise the Superintendent of your expected arrival. We realize the need for electric hookups particularly for individuals with medical conditions. We are currently pursuing this, but it may be some time before you see the results. Ghost Towns Kirwin The following are websites that you might find helpful in your research. In addition, there is a book entitled, "Ghost Towns of Wyoming" by Bruce A. Raisch that has a good number of Wyoming ghost towns listed. From the text it appears to be a duplicate of what you will find at the website (State Historic Preservation Office). If you need further information, you can contact the State Historic Preservation Office at , or me your questions and I can forward them to the SHPO staff Gift Certificates As an alternative, we do have a gift certificate available. Many people use this method as then you have something in-hand at Christmas. You can stop by headquarters to purchase the gift certificate or we can do this by mail. The cost for both the resident annual daily use and camping permit until February 15, is $50 (there is a $5 "early bird" discount). Along with your payment you will need to provide the specific "to" and "from" information so we can note this on the certificate. Please keep in mind that the recipient of the gift certificate must redeem them through headquarters again, this can be done by mail when necessary. Glendo Many improvements are currently taking place at Glendo State Park, with the plan for completion by Memorial Day weekend. You can visit the following website for more detailed information about the changes and to help in your planning, particularly as it relates to docking your boat. If you have questions regarding the changes at Glendo, please contact Gary Schoene, Public Information Officer, at as he is the most knowledgeable about them. 11

It is difficult to gauge what the upcoming season will be like as we still need to see what the spring snow melt and additional moisture will be. I would suggest that if you are planning a visit you contact the park directly to verify the water level for that time. The number for Glendo is /4/2004 per Allen Cowardin - Fires on the beach areas of Sandy Beach have been banned no matter what type of container. Gas grills are all that is allowed on the beach. This was done due to the environmental damage that these cause as well as the public safety aspects as bottles are burned and the nails in the wood that is burned are left behind. These are building in the sand and we have no way to clean this material. To make this a little more to the point, no we do not allow portable fire pits. We do provide our fire rings in the campgrounds in the tree line. If you feel this is a very necessary event then please choose one of these sites. 4/26/2005 per Allen Cowardin - The Glendo Superintendent advised me that the 4 th of July fireworks display is sponsored by the local fireworks sales retailer and he doesn't usually set the date this early--it is not a function of State Parks. You may wish to call Howard's General Store on the fireworks issue at when the date gets a little closer. HUNTING The primary hunting areas at Glendo State Park are Goose Bay and Muddy Bay, these are relatively free of park development and facilities. Our state park rules and regulations read as follows: Park lands or portions thereof are open to hunting unless otherwise posted subject to general hunting regulations prescribed by the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission. Unless otherwise posted, the use of firearms or other projectile devices are prohibited within 400 yards of any public use facility or activity area, including picnic areas, campgrounds, private cabin and concession areas, boat ramps, hard surfaced roads, designated trails, and parking lots. 12

Goathead/Boysen I have contacted the Boysen Park Superintendent with your concern. He advises me that he has been talking with the Fremont County Weed and Pest and they are going to work with us on the problem. This spring they will map the areas and start a spraying program. It will take at least 4 years to eradicate the puncture vines or goatheads. Unfortunately, this seems to be one of those plants that thrives during drought conditions. We appreciate your patience as we try to address this problem. Grand Tetons National Park Camping - Grand Teton is a national park governed by the National Park Service. Therefore, you can visit the NPS website at for information. Our office only has information about Wyoming State Parks. You can visit for information on Yellowstone National Park and to request a packet with visitor guide. The visitor guide has a wealth of information about Wyoming overall including Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. Gray Rocks Reservoir This area is managed by the Wheatland-Platte County Chamber of Commerce--it is not a state park. You may visit their website at or call Hazards of Recreation Per Paul Gritten 1/31/2005: The forest manages that area ( ) and more than likely will not trim trees for that area. If they do it once, they need to do it always and opens a liability situation. For snowmobiles, we do not sign lake as "possible thin ice" because we would have do it on all lakes and specific intervals around the hazard. They do not manage that as a "sledding area" but a recreation area. Recreation, in general, is a hazard and there is a huge disclaimer at the bottom. It would be like moving rocks from a hiking trail due to a tripping hazard. People recreate at their own risk. Horseback Riding/Equestrian In general, we do allow riding within the State Parks on the designated roads and trails; however, we do not have facilities/corrals except at Curt Gowdy ( ), Medicine Lodge ( ) and Buffalo Bill State Park ( ). You may contact the parks directly if you have specific questions. If you are traveling with your horse please check with the park staff upon entering for any specific guidelines. If you have questions about what travel papers are needed to bring your horses into Wyoming you can visit the Livestock Board's webpage at or call them at

I also suggest you visit the Wyoming State Trails website at or call for information. Many equestrians visiting our state make use of the network of trails we have through this program. Horseback Riding/Wyoming Dude Rancher s Association As an aside, the Wyoming Dude Rancher's Association might be able to make some suggestions. Their website is or phone Hours - General Our Wyoming State Parks are open year-round weather permitting. Please keep in mind that the water systems are not turned on until sometime in May--the exact date is determined when the risk of a freeze has passed. Therefore, drinking water and sewer dump stations will not be operational during your visit. Since you didn't mention a specific park, please keep in mind that we only oversee those sites listed at Sites such as Alcova or Ayers Natural Bridge as well as Game & Fish and National Forest sites within the state are not included. I simply want to clarify this as many people assume that all of the parks within the state fall under Wyoming State Parks--I would hate to have you plan your trip and find out when you arrive that the site you chose is not open. Hunting/Turkey at Keyhole The area below the dam is open to turkey hunting and if you stop in at headquarters you will be given a map of the area open to hunting on the park. Please be reminded that while hunting on State Park land you will need to acquire a license through the Game & Fish Department. Independence Rock The following websites include information on the list of names found on Independence Rock: The following is the information about Independence Rock taken from our website. If you are interested in additional facts about this site, or others, you can visit the site at Independence Rock stands 6,028 feet (1,808.3m) above sea level. The tallest point of the rock is 136 feet (40.8m) above the surrounding terrain. If one were to walk around the base of this rock, the distance covered would be more than a mile, or 5,900 feet (1.8km). The mass of Independence Rock is equal to an area of acres (9.924 ha). 14

Many people believe that the shape of this highly polished, round outcropping was created by the glaciers. Not so. A process known to geologists as "exfoliation" is how the rock came to have its sleek and round form. As Independence Rock was slowly uncovered by erosion, the immense pressures of the weight of overlying rock were gradually lessened. The rock then expanded outwardly shedding its surface layers like an onion. Layers of granite broke off, one after the other and formed the rounded shape you see here today. Windblown sand and silt have grooved the rock and polished it to a high gloss in a process called "windfaceting." It is because of this smoother surface that the pioneers were able to easily carve their names into the rock. I have verified with our Archives and Research department and it is a commonly understood fact that emigrants crossing Wyoming wanted to be to Independence Rock by July 4th, so they could avoid running into mountain snow storms further up the trail. For more information on Independence Rock you can visit the following websites: Indian Tribes/Bureau of Indian Affairs For the most accurate information, I would suggest you contact the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The following website has contact information not only for the BIA but for the Business Councils in Wyoming that can help you: Information Line The line is staffed Monday through Friday, 8:00-5:00 even during the 12:00-1:00 lunch time and rolls through the "phone tree" if someone on the tree is on another call or away from their desk. In the future, please feel free to leave a message as we are happy to return your call to provide the information you need. Interpretive/Historical Markers You can visit or call to speak to the State Historic Preservation Office. They are responsible for overseeing the historical markers and should be able to help you. Jet Skis Generally, jet skis are permitted where boats are permitted. You may wish to visit the Wyoming Game and Fish Department website for information on watercraft regulations at 15

Lapel Pins Currently, (10/2003) we do not have lapel pins to give to the public. Legend Rock We do check out keys to our Legend Rock gate to those wishing to visit that site. Keys may be picked up at either the Park Headquarters or the State Bath House. There will be no offices or Bath House open on Christmas day. However if they wish they may stop by the Bath House before 5:00 on the 24th and pick up a key. Lusk/Spanish Diggings South of Lusk between highway 85 and highway 270 lays the Spanish Diggings, Aboriginal stone quarries of the pre-historic age, which cover an area of 10 by 40 miles. I assume the boulders you are referring to are part of these quarries. The following websites give you a little more information about the Spanish Diggings, however, you may also contact the Lusk-Niobrara Chamber of Commerce at luskwy@coffey.com or phone If you are interested in learning more about the Spanish Diggings they should be able to send you in the right direction for reference material. Marriage Records For marriage records (if they exist in this instance Fort Bridger pioneer times), you can contact the county clerks office. Even if they have no record of "casual" marriages, they might be able to provide suggestions for researching this further. If you provide the names of the counties I can give you the phone numbers and addresses for them. Merchandise Boysen does not have merchandise available--only parks with Friends Groups have merchandise and it is not site specific. Those would be South Pass City, Sinks Canyon and Fort Bridger. We may have some merchandise in our Museum Store. You can contact the Museum at Medicine Wheel National Historic Landmark We don't have a brochure available on Medicine Wheel National Historic Landmark; however, I can direct you to the following website for information: Military Records, Including Forts I have contacted our State Archives Department to see if they could assist with your request. Unfortunately, they cannot. You will need to contact the U.S. National Archives 16

at with your inquiry as they handle all military records. There is a link for "military service records" on the home page under "most requested". Miracle Mile Miracle Mile is managed by the BOR in Mills, Wyoming. You can visit the following website for information on contacting them and what the area has for facilities Bureau of Reclamation Wyoming Area Office P.O. Box 1630 Mills, WY Phone: (307) Located on the North Platte River (north of Seminoe Reservoir) 54 miles southwest of Casper, and 34 miles northeast of Rawlins, and in Carbon County. Access from I-80 via Carbon County Rd Access from U.S. 220 via Natrona County Hwy. 407 and Carbon County roads 291 and 351. Mother Featherlegs Monument I've checked with our Archives and Research staff and they are not aware of such a monument or what trail it would be located on. There is a website you can visit which has details on the Cheyenne Deadwood Stage and the monument by Lusk, Wyoming. I'm sorry we can't be of more assistance, but hope the website provides what you need. Names Hill State Historic Site You can visit the following websites for further information on Names Hill: While Names Hill is one of three locations along the Oregon Trail where emigrants registered their presence, it is the only one that is made of limestone. Register Cliff is sandstone and Independence Rock granite worn away to a smooth surface. Names Hill is located 6 miles south of La Barge, 43 miles north of Kemmerer, and 27 miles south of Big Piney, Wyoming. You can visit the following websites for further information on Names Hill: National Park Service 17

Oldest State Parks Boysen State Park and Keyhole State Park both entered the park system in 1956, followed by Buffalo Bill State Park and Guernsey State Park in On-Line Reservations The parks that do take reservations are: Boysen, Buffalo Bill, Curt Gowdy, Glendo, Guernsey, Keyhole and Medicine Lodge Archaeological Site. Reservations at these sites can be made by calling or going on-line to (reservations made for arrival dates though Sept. 30). ORVs/ATVs/Snowmobiles Motorized vehicles can be operated only on roads, trails or areas designated for such use. A valid driver's license or learner's permit is required. Permits currently sell for $15 each ATV and $25 Snow. The individual requesting the permit needs to have the make, model year, and vehicle identification number (VIN) in order to purchase a permit. When selling a permit, ask if they would like to donate $1 to the Search and Rescue. ATV/ORV permits are displayed on the left side of the vehicle (as you are sitting in the vehicle just like park permits). They do not have to be affixed to the windshield. For snowmobile permits, they must have documentation to verify that sales tax has been paid OR they can bring along the prior year s permit certificate as proof. As of 4/6/2006 Paul Gritten handles the tax exempt snowmobile permits/registration. Per Paul 2/23/2007: Idaho Trails into Alpine, Wyoming A snowmobile permit is not needed for Idaho residents Deadwood into Wyoming/Black Hills A snowmobile permit is not needed for South Dakota residents The reason for this is how the trails are groomed--idaho and South Dakota handle the grooming. Patch SPHS Upon request, we will provide at no charge the Wyoming State Parks & Historic Sites iron-on patch to patch collectors. Request these from Bill Westerfield (as of 1/12/2004). Parks with No Day Use Fee Charged Sinks Canyon, Connor Battlefield, and Medicine Lodge. 19

Payment Options At the Park: As of 6/2004 we can only accept cash and checks for payment of fees at the parks/sites except Glendo, Guernsey, Curt Gowdy which accept credit cards. Permits Wyoming has an annual pass for both daily use and camping. For non-residents the fee is $40.00 for the annual Daily Use and $60.00 for the annual Camping. If you plan to visit for only the day, you will need the Daily Use permit. If you plan to camp you will need both the Daily Use and Camping permits. You can also "pay as you go." The nonresident fees are as follows: $4.00 Daily Use (parks); $2.00 Daily Use (historic site); $12.00 Overnight Camping (single night, includes daily use fee). Posters Check with the following SPCR individuals if someone has inquired about purchasing a poster: Holly Allen-SHPO, Evangeline Bratton. Register Cliff RV Hook-Ups The availability of water hookups varies by park. We do not currently offer electricity, although this is something we are considering. We do not currently offer hookups at our campsites, although drinking water and restrooms are available--our restrooms do not have showers. Some sites do have trailer dump stations. Please keep in mind that the water systems are shut off from 10/1 - early May to avoid frozen/broken water lines. We are pursuing offering hookups and showers at our sites, but this is still in the planning stages. You might want to visit our website to view the specific information for each site. Typically, when there are changes at any of our sites, we will post a press release on the web--so you can find out what type of amenities we offer in the future. RV Rentals Another option might be renting an RV through Cruise America (they are one of the largest RV rental companies). You might check them out on-line to see where their closest dealer is and what they offer. Schools Requests for Information Send information specific to what they ask. If nothing specified send general packet plus historic site brochures and general state information. SCORP Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan You can download a copy of the SCORP from our website under the "Master Plans" link. Of course, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. 20

Senior Discounts We currently (as of 10/2003) do NOT offer senior discounts on park passes. We do not currently offer a senior discount for park passes, however, I will forward your to the Director of State Parks and Historic Sites for consideration. Silt Run Guernsey/Glendo The Silt Run typically takes place immediately following the July 4th holiday. Because of the drought conditions last year a second run was done. DIRECTLY FROM THE BOR Subject:Glendo and Guernsey Operating Levels for Remainder of Water Year 2004 Beginning on July 6, 2004, the level of Guernsey Reservoir will rapidly decline in preparation for the annual Guernsey Silt Run. By July 7, the boat ramps on Guernsey Reservoir will be no longer usable due to the low reservoir level. The silt run is expected to begin on July 11 and continue for a period of 20 days. The reservoir will begin to fill following the conclusion of the silt run and is expected to rise to a level suitable for boating recreation by August 4. We expect the reservoir to remain usable for boating recreation during the weekend of August 7-8 and will make every effort to maintain the level through the weekend of August 14-15, provided the irrigation districts continue to call for delivery of storage water through mid-august. Unfortunately, due to the severe drought conditions that we all are dealing with, the best scenario we can expect at this time for Guernsey Reservoir following the silt run, would be to operate the reservoir at a level suitable for boating recreation from August 4 through August 15. Since the Bureau of Reclamation must operate Guernsey Reservoir to be essentially empty by the end of irrigation deliveries, we anticipate that the reservoir level will no longer be suitable for boating by August 16. With regard to Glendo Reservoir, Reclamation operating plans based on most probable inflows indicate Glendo Reservoir will be at elevation 4624 (397,000 AF) at the commencement of the silt run and decline approximately 16 feet to elevation 4608 (258,000 AF) by the conclusion of the silt run on July 31. The reservoir is expected to be at or near elevation 4580 (98,000 AF) by August 15, and will reach its lowest level of 4572 (71,000 AF) on or around August 22. Following that date, the reservoir will begin to rise and is expected to be at elevation 4576 (83,000 AF) by the Labor Day weekend and elevation 4583 (112,000 AF by the end of September. The reservoir will continue to rise throughout the winter months as water released at Gray Reef Dam is restored downstream in Glendo Reservoir. Snowmobile 21

Your Colorado snowmobile permit is not reciprocal. Resident registrations and nonresident snowmobile user fees are required by Wyoming State Law. These annual fee revenues are used by the Snowmobile Trails Fund for trail grooming and maintenance. Proof of payment is in the form of a decal which must be displayed on the exterior of the snow machine. Resident and nonresident decals are available from licensed permit selling agents across the state, Wyoming State Parks & Historic Sites headquarters and local snowmobile clubs. You can visit the following Trails website for a list Permits may also be ordered by calling, Decals are $ Snowshoeing You can visit for information on our trails system. For specific questions, you can also call to speak to our trails staff. South Pass City Gold Panning Yes, you can pan for gold in the waters of Willow Creek, however, I don't know if there are restrictions on times (or others). You may want to contact the site directly at to acquire specific information. I'm sorry I can't provide better information, but this is something that the site handles solely. State Lands I would suggest you contact the State Lands office slfmail@state.wy.us for the most current regulations. The State Lands Office may be able to help with regard to border changes in the 1800's, or be able to send you in the right direction. The phone number is State Library for Reference Material Lesley Boughton, State Librarian State Library Division Supreme Court and State Library Building Cheyenne, WY Phone: Fax: lbough@state.wy.us Swimming With regard to swimming at Seminoe, Sunshine Beach is the designated area. You can also swim at non-designated areas. In both instances it is "swim at your own risk" as there are no lifeguards on duty. For designated areas no domestic animals are allowed on the beach, no glass containers, no fishing, and no fires (at this time I don't have information on whether there is a fire ban at Seminoe). Tow Vehicle Permit 22

With regard to your RV tow vehicle, if you detach and are driving within the park, you do not need a permit. However, if you take your tow vehicle out of the park, you will need a permit when you come back in. You can purchase a Second Vehicle Permit for $5 when you purchase your primary permit. Trails Program Many parks have trails specifically for hiking, biking and walking. For specific information about the Trails Program call or go to Veterans Museum - Casper Contact is Sam Christian. Veterans Park Pass Earlier this year (2003) we did institute the Wyoming Resident Veterans Lifetime Permit program. This program allows Wyoming Veterans with a 50% or more service-connected disability to acquire a permit for lifetime use of any Wyoming State Park at no charge. Per Bill Westerfield 5/10/2004: The Resident Veterans Lifetime Permit is only valid "for the applicant and for all occupants of applicant's vehicle" according to W.S (n). With regard to your second vehicle, you will need to purchase the regular daily use and camping permits. Your second vehicle Annual camping and daily use permits can be purchased for $10 ($5 for the camping and $5 for the daily use). We offer this to customers who purchase an annual permit for their primary vehicle, but felt it was appropriate to allow veterans with a Lifetime Permit to have this benefit as well. You can purchase your second vehicle permit right at the park. Per Bill Westerfield 6/29/2004: This is a program which the legislature brought from idea to statute on their own. It is not something we suggested, so it would be up to them to change if they wanted to do so. At this time Wyoming offers a free resident veterans lifetime park permit pursuant to Wyoming Statute W.S (n). You must be a Wyoming resident with 50% or more service connected disability compensation from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. I'm sorry we can't help you with a pass; however, I hope this information is helpful. Volunteer/Host Program It is best if you contact the specific park you are interested in and speak to the superintendent about the volunteer/host program they have. I will mail you general information for all of the parks which includes contact information (please note that the listed is this general mailbox, so you should call them if possible). 23

Water Level Information For up-to-date water level and temperature information you can visit and click on the boating/reservoir info link. You can also visit the Bureau of Reclamation website for detailed information at The BOR manages the water in the reservoirs. Yellowstone National Park Our office only has information about the Wyoming state parks. You can visit for information on Yellowstone National Park and to request a packet with visitor guide. The visitor guide has a wealth of information about Wyoming overall including Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. Yellowstone National Park is managed by the National Park Service--it is not a Wyoming State Park. Therefore, you will need to contact the NPS for information. You can visit their website at If you go to "activities" there is a section on fishing, including the regulations. You can also find contact information if you want to submit your specific question. 24
