1 The Tattler Central Coast California Unit Region 12 Welcome to Central Coast California 2014 Officers President John Thornton (#2011) Vice President Roger Siminoff (#2945 ) Secretary Carol Cunningham (#4895) Treasurer Paula Poll (#8252 ) Past President Mike Gross (#1469) One Year Directors Walt Bremer (#3884) Keith Valley (#3012) Two Year Directors Karen Jones (#1647) Pam Lindsay (#4585) The Tattler is published monthly except summer months. For more information about our organization, please check out our website at: Or contact our Membership Chairman: Gary Mellinger Send new postings to: Web Master: Walt Bremer Send your articles & photos to the Tattler Editor: Roxy Gross Airstream owners of Central Coast California San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura Counties Greetings from John Thornton, President We had an enjoyable rally at the Wine Country RV Resort a couple of weeks ago. Thanks to Erlend & Ruth and Cal & Peggy for planning and hosting this event. We received worthwhile CPR training from the Paso Robles Fire Department. Our hosts also arranged for a tour of the Firestone Brewery, and breakfast at the Paso Robles Culinary Institute followed by a private tour from the head chef. Planned group activities provide more opportunity for visiting and fun together. We held the annual meeting and election of officers, and I am pleased to announce that our members unanimously elected Roger as President, Pam as VP, Carol as Secretary, Paula as Treasurer, Bruce and Joe as 2 year Directors, and Karen and Mark as one year Directors. Gary has agreed to continue to serve as Membership Chairman, and Walt as Web Master. We still need an editor for the Tattler. Roxy has done a great job for the past 5 years and has asked that someone take over the task. At the meeting, we also voted on the motion to allow the Board to approve of a delegate to the International meeting that may be any member of WBCCI. This new flexibility will ensure that if no regular member of CCC is attending, the Board may delegate any member of WBCCI as delegate. Our December rally is at the Channel Islands Yacht Harbor in Ventura where we will enjoy a buffet dinner and viewing of the Parade of Lights from the deck of the yacht club. We will hold the installation of officers and thank those who served our club during this year. Even if you aren't planning on camping with us in December, please join us for the buffet dinner ($25/person) and viewing if you can. There may still be room if you make the reservation soon (send me an and mail the coupon in this issue). That brings me to another thought. As we hold our rallies all over the Central Coast, sometimes you may find that it doesn't make sense for you to pull out your rig and drive 10 minutes to a rally. Please join us for happy hour, a meal, or just to say "hello", even if you aren't camping with the group. Best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving, John Page 1 November 2014

2 Annual Meeting & Rally in Paso Submitted by Gary Our November Rally at Wine Country RV in Paso Robles was graciously hosted by Peggy & Cal, Ruth & Erlend. What great weather! Christa and I arrived Thursday afternoon and found it to be gorgeous, with days in the 80 s and lows hovering in the mid 40 s. When we pulled in, we soon realized that over half of our attendees had already arrived and set up for the long weekend. Thursday evening our early arrivals were on their own for dinner. However, some of us gathered at Peggy and Cal s for some impromptu chips and salsa. Friday, we were out of bed early, and headed off for the Culinary Arts Academy a few blocks from our resort, for breakfast and a tour of the kitchen by Chef Phillip. The Academy is a training program for the local high school students, and part of their duties are to prepare the lunch meals for the local school district as well as breakfast and lunch for the academy guests. They also cater for events, weddings and parties. Prices there are quite reasonable, and the meals are very good. What s not to love! The tour was fascinating, and my eggs Benedict meal was delicious. Back in the trailer hood, Carol had an issue with her galley cabinet which had come loose. Rick and Gary headed off to the home improvement store to buy fasteners to reattach it. Carol generously traded Tobin James Cab for the favor. Thank you Carol, you have great taste. The remainder of the day we chose to chill. The balance of our rally folks arrived, and Melissa s husband Wayne drove over from Modesto to join her and her puppy in their beautiful vintage rig. Soon it was Happy Hour and time for dinner with our hosts providing a tasty taco bar with 3 choices of meats, rice and beans. Dessert was a decadent chocolate cake made by Peggy and we celebrated the birthdays of Pam and Gary. After dinner, we stayed at the clubhouse for a CPR demonstration by San Luis Obispo s finest firefighters. They pulled several practice dummies off their engine and most campers used the opportunity to brush up on their resuscitation skills. Many folks wanted to hang around longer to catch up on recent happenings with their friends. Also driving in for dinner tonight was our President John and his wife Jane, and our webmaster Walt and his wife Judy stopped by. Lucky for them they both live close by. Saturday our hosts served breakfast at the clubhouse, with choices of oatmeal, bagels, fruit and juice. Our morning was accented with low fly-overs by the local aviators from Paso Robles Municipal Airport, built in 1942 as Estrella Army Airfield. We even saw low-flying fire bombers making loaded practice runs. Some of our friends drove the couple of miles to visit this historic field and see the Estrella Air Museum. Page 2 November 2014

3 Most everyone was excited to head off to Firestone Walker Brewing for the tour of the plant with our two scheduled visits around noon. Our tour was amazing. What fun it was seeing and hearing the history of the brewery and the 3 young men who built it. And if you were wondering, yes, one of the men is the son of the Firestone Vineyard family. Aside from the fact that they produce some of the most delicious beer around, this brewery has set the standard for cleanliness, which other breweries strive to achieve. Firestone Walker is famous for their 805 Beer which is sold all over the Western States. On our visit, we were served two distinctly different brews, and the tour ends in the mini taproom where some of their various beers can be sampled. Some of our group chose to go across the street to visit Firestone Walker s Restaurant, The Taproom. Here you can dine on some of the most delicious entrees and enjoy a tap beer. Our favorite is Velvet Merkin. If you d like to know more about this crazily-named, goldmedal beer, ask me the story next time you see me. Saturday evening, we were back for Thanksgiving Dinner at the clubhouse. Our hosts provided turkey, gravy and ham and our generous guests provided the sides which were over the top, delicious! Tender turkey breast and praline honey ham with cinnamon applesauce. I forgot to mention Thanksgiving dinner s treat, dressing with gravy. Oh, and about 4 or 5 homemade cranberry delights! The desserts were so yummy with pies, cakes, cheesecakes, and other delicious offerings. No one left that night, hungry. Also attending the dinner were noncampers Mark & Glenda, Dan & Karen and Meghan, and Roger. Our Annual Business Meeting was held after dinner, presided over by our President John T. and V.P. Roger. We took a vote to confirm our slate of Officers and Board Directors for next year. Reports were also given by our Treasurer Paula, and Membership Chair Gary. A plea was made for someone to step up and become the new Tattler Newsletter Editor, to carry on in Roxy s able footsteps. We need someone to volunteer, or you won t be reading future rally recaps and stories, among other things. Sunday morning started off with Cal & Ruth flipping the most delicious blueberry pancakes. I tried to pull it off at home and came nowhere near their culinary achievement. Topped off with real butter and maple syrup, mmmmmm! I discovered from Cal that the secret is to place the blueberries in after you pour the batter on the griddle. This keeps the blueberries from being diluted and becoming mushy. The sausage was yummy too. Realizing that this was our last day to have the clubhouse, several members chose to stay a bit longer after breakfast and chat. There s never enough time to hear of everyone s travel adventures. Line-up of CCC Airstreams at Wine Country RV Page 3 November 2014

8 April (Thursday-Sunday): Camatta Ranch, Santa Margarita Hosts: Although a Region 12 Rally, a CCC host would be helpful. This 35,000 acre working ranch is an incredible place to camp and features a secluded campsite with lots of wildlife, aquatic fossils, and more. This year, Region 12 selected the Camatta Ranch to replace the Hobo Rally. Hiking, western barbeque, and lots of time to connect. May (Thursday-Sunday): Hosts: Bob & Linda Minder and Steve & Tammy Wark. Moss Landing KOA, Moss Landing. Now we re heading north to this great little campground on the inland-side of Moss Landing harbor, just a stone s throw from the ocean (about 20 miles south of Santa Cruz). Great exploring, walks around the harbor, beach walks, visits to the nearby estuary, and more. June (Friday-Sunday): Refugio State Beach, Goleta (No-Host). Here s another oceanside opportunity for a great summer weekend break. This no-host rally is a pretty much doyour-own-thing event along with fellow CCC members. (Make your own reservations.) July 9-13 (Thursday-Monday): 49er Village RV, Plymouth (No Host, Buddy Rally). Our extended rally takes us to the Gold Country for our first return trip since A wonderful RV site with nearby wineries, cavern and gold mine tours, and the old town of Jackson with a lot of interesting shops. It s a buddy rally, so your non-airstream friends can camp with us. (Make your own reservations.) August (Thursday-Sunday): San Simeon State Park (No Host). This is a beautiful campground in a serene setting, with an underpass leading to the ocean. Since this is a nohost rally each member reserves their own site in the lower campground sites S43 to S115, which provides some tree cover and protection from the wind. It s fun to visit nearby Cambria. August 16 (Sunday): Roger & Rosemary s Backyard Bluegrass Jam, Atascadero. Each year, Roger and Rosemary host a backyard bluegrass jam for local musicians and those friends who enjoy music. The event features a band scramble (where musicians throw their name in a hat and bands are assembled ad hoc for a band contest). Good food. Good fun. Good music. And it s a great stopping place on your way back from San Simeon. September (Friday-Sunday): Star Farms, San Miguel. Hosts: Roger & Rosemary Siminoff and Mark & Glenda Kiger Here s a new location for the CCC. Star Farms is a private site open only to select groups. And we ll have it all to ourselves! October (Friday-Sunday): El Chorro County Regional Park, San Luis Obispo. Hosts: Needed. This park is a beautiful site just north of San Luis Obispo. A wooded setting, El Chorro offers a public campground with privacy and beautiful surroundings. November (Friday-Sunday): Ocean Mesa (Meeting). Hosts: Jim & Yvonne Savage and Mike & Nancy Jackson. Seeking Co-hosts We re back to Ocean Mesa for our last business meeting of the year. Just north of Santa Barbara, this campsite is rustic while neat and tidy, and offers a yurt meeting room. December (Friday-Sunday): Flying Flags (Installation dinner). Hosts: Bruce & Carol Yeoman and Jeanne & Jim Wade. Flying Flags received some of the highest votes in our member survey. A very well kept campground, with a clubhouse just 10 miles from Solvang a great Danish town to explore and the historic La Purisima Mission in Lompoc. If you are interested in attending one of the rallies, we encourage you to make your reservations as soon as you can once the coupons are available. We removed the front dinette and use two large wicker chairs with small tables. That has worked best for us for dinning and relaxing. It is set up for the two of us but have had 4 for dinner eating inside with additional chairs. The double bed in the middle can be enlarged to king size at night with our additional foam and support. Asking $9500. Page 13 November 2014

14 From Paula & Ed: Look Familiar? Looks like we made the LA Magazine again this October; the original run date was July Although a new article entitled Hit the Water, the picture is the same one. The photo was taken on the beach at Thornhill Broome. With Ed & Paula are grandkids Adam, Lucas, Katie, and Colten. Recipe for Thanksgiving Found this in a pamphlet sent to the house taken from A little bit different than the norm but it sounded good. Butternut Squash, Cranberry and Apple Gratin Submitted by Roxy Ingredients 8 teaspoons unsalted butter, plus 1 tablespoon at room temperature 3 pounds butternut squash, peeled, halved, seeded and diced into 1 inch cubes 3 sweet, tart apples that will keep their shape after baking; peeled, cored and diced into ½ inch cubes. 1 1/3 cups dried cranberries 1/4 cup finely chopped flat-leaf parsley 1/2 teaspoon finely chopped fresh thyme 1 tablespoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 heaping cup plain flour Directions Preheat oven to 350. Grease a 9 x 11 baking dish with the 1 tablespoon of butter and set aside. In a large bowl, toss together the squash, apples, cranberries, parsley, thyme, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Drizzle in the melted butter and stir to combine. Then add flour and mix to evenly coat the mixture. Turn the mixture into the prepared baking dish and bake until the top is golden brown and the squash is tender but not mushy. A paring knife should easily slip into the center of a piece of squash. Roughly 45 to 50 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool 5 minutes before serving. One of the best jobs is still open for 2015 Help keep the membership informed Editor for the Tattler Contact Roxy or Roger for more information Page 14 November 2014
