Message From The Editor Dear Fellow CLC Members, I hope your are enjoying the Summer of 2011 as much as I am. Yes, I know the weather can t seem to make up its mind. First it s too wet and rainy, then it turns East Bay Hot, and then the marine layer is drawn in making us shiver in July. My convertible is supplied with sunscreen, hats, jackets, blankets, a cooler of water and soft drinks, and anything else I or my passengers might need as the weather changes on a whim. Only if all else fails do we deploy the top and windows and heater! I thoroughly enjoyed driving in the Novato Fourth of July Parade this year. I helped by recruiting friends Don Barnes and Ron Kane and getting them in contact with the organizers of the parade. I would be most interested in what you and your family did on the Fourth, especially if it involved the use of your vintage car. Send me photos and a brief paragraph of how you re enjoying the summer. If you haven t signed up for Portal Park, do so ASAP like right now. You may have missed the July 18 th deadline for reserving your BBQ, but there may still be time to register your car and bring your own picnic on Sunday, July 24 th. It s not too early to make your plans and reservations for the All State Meet (a.k.a. The North- South Meet) in Morro Bay. The dates are October 7 9, and the SoCal CLC is arranging the event. If you want to tour down from the Bay Area, let me know so we can make arrangements to meet and drive down together. Charles Thompson NorCal CLC Headliner Page 2 of 12 July 2011

Wineries & Wine Tasting Hearst Castle 48 th Annual All-State Meet (a.k.a. The North-South Meet) October 7-9, 2011 The Southern California CLC is arranging this event and has selected the Inn At Morro Bay as our headquarters. The application is on the next page. Please print, fill out and send along with your check as soon as you can. This spectacular part of the California coast has an amazing array of things to do and see. Attractions include. Pismo Monarch Butterfly Grove Golf Courses Nestled in the dramatic Pacific coastline, thriving under the watchful eye of ancient Morro Rock, you'll find the quaint town of Morro Bay, California. Close to San Luis Obispo, the Inn at Morro Bay offers a unique setting unrivaled by other San Luis Obispo hotels. You will enjoy a beautiful drive, whether you take Highway 101 or experience the breathtaking views of the Central Coast of California that scenic Highway 1 offers. San Luis Obispo Airport is within thirty minutes drive of the Inn at Morro Bay. If you would like to tour down as a group on Friday, October 7 th, please contact Charles Thompson at 415/ We would most likely meet somewhere near San Jose and drive down together. We ll find a place along the way to enjoy lunch together and then travel on to the hotel in time to relax and meet once again for cocktails and dinner. Note that the per-night rate quoted in the application is $129, and the rate shown for a single queen room on the Inn s website is $119. However, I know of two members who have gotten a $79 rate. Please make your plans and call the hotel for the best rates you can get. Ask about AAA discounts. NorCal CLC Headliner Page 5 of 12 July 2011

New Use for Favorite Old Car You won t find anything like this at your local Home Depot or hardware store. Just install your favorite propane gas grill into the engine bay, and remodel the interior of the car to look like the diner you used to visit when you were a teenager. Set up an umbrella and find yourself a colorful set of melamine dishes to go with it all. Maybe you could enhance these ideas with your own ingenuity. How about a Wurlitzer in the trunk?! Ever have an extra car you really like but don t have garage space for, or one that doesn t run but looks darn good? Well, this may be an idea for you. Dennis Coy submitted these photos of a 1956 Ford Sunliner transformed into a patio grill and 50 s diner car booth. NorCal CLC Headliner Page 7 of 12 July 2011
A Sonoma County Field Find While touring through the back roads of Sonoma County this week, I spotted this poor old 1949 Cadillac Series 62 Sedan. I made a U-turn and went back to see what was this all about. To me, the car was a disaster. While the exterior was scuffed, I saw no dents and it appeared very few parts were missing (the right side fender skirt was nowhere to be seen). But the interior was a travesty. The steering wheel only had one small piece of the original ivory plastic the rest was just a rusted circle of steel. The seats appeared to have gone back to nature. The sign on the windshield says $5,000 or make offer/trade. There was also a Studebaker dump truck for $1,000 and a very old rusty tractor for $600. It makes one wonder what sort of trade would be considered. Perhaps a rusty old vintage grape crusher or a broken down hay bailing machine? I m one of those guys who marvels at the before photos set up in front of a gleaming, near perfect restored car of one kind or another. So I know such basket cases can be brought back to life by a mechanic and a restoration artist with Doctor Frankenstein-like talents. If you are interested, the phone number provided was If you get the thing running and bring it to a NorCal CLC event, I will personally buy you a tank of brand new gasoline! 9 As has become the custom, the Novato Fourth of July Parade was smashing. While I missed seeing the vintage military vehicles usually in the parade, I thoroughly enjoyed the floats, music and marching units of all sorts. Driving some of the dignitaries are some old car types, some from our club. At left and below is Henry Hopkins driving Councilwoman Denise Athas his 1956 Chrysler 300B, a one-of-a-kind special car. At right below, is Don Barnes in his 1947 Chrysler Town N Country driving the Mayor, Madeline Kellner, who is speaking with Senator Mark Leno. At the bottom, we see Wiley Fox being driven in a vintage Ford, and Ron Kane preparing to drive City Council Candidate Eric Lucan in Ron s 1967 Barracuda convertible. NorCal CLC Headliner Page 9 of 12 July 2011
More photos from the Novato Parade include the 1976 Eldorado at left carrying Councilwoman Pat Eklund. Below clockwise is a motorized toilet a new way to commute that is fabulously convenient if you get caught in traffic. Continuing clockwise is Charles Thompson s 1949 Cadillac chauffeuring the Green Business of the Year Inn Marin. Another Eldorado was carrying a hardy soul dressed in a large Bassett hound costume followed by many of the dogs dressed up in patriotic garb. NorCal CLC Headliner Page 10 of 12 July 2011

DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO PORTAL PARK IN CUPERTINO From anywhere in the Bay Area Drive to 280 (between 85 and 880) in Cupertino. Turn west on WOLFE ROAD (toward the hills). Go past the Cupertino Square Shopping Center, to STEVENS CREEK BLVD. Turn right on Stevens Creek and go 1 long block (pass 1 stop light) to PORTAL AVE. Turn right on Portal Ave, go past the round-a-bout and you will soon see PORTAL PARK on the left. There are barriers at the first parking lot entrance, so go to the 2 nd entrance where you will see the CLC BBQ sign. Turn left into the lot, left again, and follow the signs and arrows back thru the parking lot and they will guide you into the park and BBQ area. (Turn right up a slight incline next to the debris bins) It s a piece of cake from there WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ALL THERE! Fred Bausch NorCal CLC Headliner Page 11 of 12 July 2011
