1 Editor: Pasture Patti Cajon Cowboy Monthly September 2007 Jackson Turner s Band to play at Legends Hi all first off, I want to apologize For not publishing a newsletter for awhile. Bojack has been sick and in the hospital which has kept me pretty busy. He is getting better and hopes to be out on the range very soon. This has been a long battle but I think he is winning. We are getting ready for our annual Legends of the West shoot at the end of September which will honor the great Jack Elam. Jackson Turner aka Mason Dixon came to the shoot on Sat. and confirmed that he will be our entertainment for Saturday night!!! He is going to bring his band and they will surely play some great music. Pasture Patti History of the Cajon Pass I am re-publishing the History of the Cajon Pass because it is not only interesting but we have many new members who may not have read it. Evidence exists that the Cajon Pass was inhabited for thousands of years by the early man and the Ute Indians. The earliest documented passage of the Pass was by a Catholic priest from a northern California mission, Farther Garces, who was taking an inland route on a trip to the south when he discovered the Pass as a viable route in March of Another priest Father Zalvidea followed the trail down through the Pass in 1806 on an exploration from Santa Barbara to San Gabriel, looking for inland mission sites. Then in 1827 Kit Carson scouted and mapped the Pass for use by Jedediah Smith the Trapper. Smith was on a mission in the West to map a route for the Mormons to follow in their movement into the San Bernardino valley area. For the first several decades of its use the Pass was known for the presence of marauding Ute s, under Chief Walkera, Hawk of the Mountains and for Anglo and Mexican horse thieves. The arrival of the Mormons and others helped stabilize the Cajon area which remained at the edge of civilization.

2 The Coming of the Railroad In 1879, there was fierce competition between railroads seeking access from the east to Southern California and its seaports. The Southern Pacific had maneuvered to buy up a proposed route through Cajon Pass to block competition with its monopoly on the line through San Grogonio Pass, but in by-passing San Bernardino aroused opposition there. When officials of the California Southern Pacific (now Santa Fe) appeared in the area looking for an alternate route to rival the Southern Pacific, a young San Bernardino engineer named Fred T. Perris showed them the route of the Old Spanish Trail. The account of this expedition sounds like detective fiction, the Perris party, aware of being followed by Southern Pacific spies started their survey in San Gorgonio and on to Morongo, this led the Southern Pacific followers to assume their quarry was headed towards Blythe, away from the Pass and they turned back. The clever Parris, however, led the officials around the north side of the San Bernardino Mountains and into Horse Thief Canyon, topping the ridge where the old road came through, and suggested a wide curve to ease the grade down into Cajon Canyon. The present tracks owned by Santa Fe still follow his suggestion to the railroad officials. Ironically, Southern Pacific built a line thru the Pass parallel to Santa Fe in At the entrance to Glen Helen Park there is California History Landmark #573, the Sycamore Grove Monument. In pioneer times, the sheltered coves were well known camp sites. The Mormon colonists camped at Sycamore Grove in1851 while their leaders negotiated with the Lugos, owners of a Spanish land grant for the purchase of Rancho San Bernardino. In the late 1800 s travelers headed for Cucamonga, Chino and the Los Angeles area camped there. In 1850 George Martin and his family established a way station there on what was called Cajon Pass Road, which at the time ran on the west side of the creek. The Martin s, a well know stop for some 30 years served as the first stop from Cucamonga or San Bernardino. There travelers could rest and water their horses before continuing up the rugged terrain of the Pass. Also, in 1858 a temporary military camp was set up by Col. William Hoffman while on a scouting mission for proposed fort sites along the government road across the Mojave Desert. In 1864 Nicholas Earp, a former Justice of the Peace, led a caravan of 40 wagons and 150 emigrants from Council Bluffs, Iowa down the Cajon Pass into Redlands after camping at Sycamore Grove for several days. Wyatt, then 16 years old, was in charge of the Earp wagons and stock. Virgil then 22 years old, was still enlisted in the 83rd Illinois Infantry, Morgan was not mentioned in this account. In 1880 the Earps moved to Colton where Nicholas carved out a living as a cattle rancher boasting approximately 500 hear of cattle. (continued next month)

5 The Chuck Wagon was invented in 1866 by Col. Charles Goodnight so that he could feed his cowboys on the long trail drives to the railheads. Temple But Not Shirley In the opening sequence of Once Upon a Time in the West, Jack Elam captures a fly in his gun barrel. The scene took two days to film and the fly only became cooperative after director Sergio Leone thought of smearing Elam s face with watermelon If you ve hot a recipe from Jack Elam, take my advice: Don t eat it. Gene Evans 3 parts Cutty Sark 1 part Water Ice Cubes Mix. If not satisfied, repeat the same, again and again. Add a few Salted peanuts for food value. Makes 1 serving. Jack Elam, actor

6 Pards, what s the most wonderful gift you ve ever been given? A silver-mounted saddle? A brace of ivory-gripped Colts? A 100X beaver hat? Those are mighty fine things, but Sin Killer knows of the greatest gift you ve ever been given life. That is our Bible word this month. Yeah, we re alive, up and walking around, but the Good Book also has other things in mind when speaking of life. It means the way you live your life. You have a choice. You can live in false pride, or you can live in honest humility. Some folks go around as full of wind as a bull in corn time. An that ain t life. The Bible says life is not our own, it belongs to God, and is not ours to dispose of. Some hombres think they can play God and pull just about anybody s picket pin, even their own. An that ain t life. God means this gift of life is to be enjoyed and our whole physical, emotional, and intellectual life comes from God. Some dull- Cajon Cowboys Shooting Association, Inc. Club Contacts President Bojack Cell Vice President Luke Warmwater Cell Secretary/Treasurer Pasture Patti Cell SASS Territorial Governor Asphalt Cowboy Cell Webmaster Calamity Candy ards think life is to be lived like tea time at the Methodist parsonage. An that ain t life. Life is so important that Jesus went about healing the sick, and the dying, or even bringing stone cold dead folks back to life! Some idjits put much store in walking around with their tongue hanging out a foot an forty inches and runnin from the sawbones. An that ain t life. Jesus even died on the cross to prove the power of his divine life over death. And life in Christ means putting on the white hat and fighting for the right, and helping out the helpless. That s about the whole shebang of life, except for the biggest part of life eternal life. This wonderful life that God has given us will if we accept the free gift from the hand of Jesus never ends. We will pick up life in the new heaven and the new earth. That life to come will be as clean and shiny as a new penny full of adventure and, well, life! Life is so wonderful and precious that you don t dare become a murderer and deprive the innocent of their life up to and including life in the womb, or elderly life that is past it s prime. God wants us to value life so much that if we catch a murderer God authorizes us to drag that miscreant to the tallest oak and hang im and watch him (or her) swing, and call in the whole county to observe same, so that the sin of murder will be eradicated from the land. And that s life. Now go careful.
