2 The Historic Espanola Schoolhouse is preparing a positive display on the African-American experience in Flagler County entitled Warmth From The Same Sun. The title is designed to capture not only the aspirations of AfricanAmericans but a central theme in Florida history- that of people from all over seeking a little elbow room in the sun. Picture David Noel Even the well-known Seminoles were originally Creeks from Georgia who broke away from difficult conditions to gain that elbow room with black allies. This theme tells a fuller, richer story of the total African-American experience, and shows it is not isolated from, but forms part of the great mosaic of Florida. Drawing heavily on the excellent work and archives of the Flagler County Historical Society (including taped oral histories), the display is divided into 5 parts: 1) The Plantation and Seminole War era 2) The Railroads and Agriculture era 3) The 1950s and 1960s: era of change 4) The sunbelt shift era- Palm Coast 5) Notable African-Americans from Flagler County Pioneer luncheon planned for Festival The pioneer families of Flagler County will gather to celebrate their rich history. A luncheon in the historic Black Cloud Restaurant The many cultures that make our community a vibrant one will be celebrated including White Farmers, African American Community, Menorcans, Spanish, and the many peoples that have added so much to our history. African American Cultural Society The 2012 Pioneer luncheon was a great success honoring the many cultures and families that worked to grow what is today s Flagler County Florida now rich in both agricultural and city growth.

3 Henry Flagler and Statuary Hall 2013 marks the 100 th anniversary of the death of Henry Flagler. Our County was named for Henry Flagler, but it was after his death in 1913, since Flagler County wasn t formed until Now William Greene, Ed. D is pushing to have Mr. Flagler as one of our two Florida statues represented in Statuary Hall in DC. The current representatives are: John Gorrie ( ) who is considered to be one of the fathers of refrigeration and air conditioning. The other is Edmund Kirby Smith ( ) Confederate General and educator. Many states are working to update the representatives from their states to bring the representatives up to date. Since Henry Flagler was instrumental in building the railroad from the north east down to Key West, he did more as an individual to develop Florida than anyone else in the late 1800 s. He was the founding partner with John D. Rockefeller for Standard Oil, which is where he made his money. No Internal Revenue and therefore no taxes back then so he got to keep his monies and helped develop our State. The statue that would be replaced would be brought to Tallahassee, not destroyed. Heritage Crossroads has voted to support this effort by Mr. Greene. The County Commissioners are also behind this project. We need Letters of Support for this project. A suggested letter is included. Please it back to me, Barb Kelly, at sweetie05@cfl.rr.com or to ajohnson@flaglercounty.org He is the Special Projects Coordinator for our county. Historian, author, actor will bring history alive at Heritage Festival James Bullock James Bullock of St. Augustine has ancestors that fought in the American Revolution. He is a history actor and story teller of long experience bringing our history alive. He has played many roles and has been a leading force at Fort Mose. James is typical of the dedication and devotion to accuracy the re-enactors bring to our Heritage Festival. James Bullock is the author of the play Freedom Road, a story about Fort Mose, the first free Black settlement in what is now the United States, established in 1738 and located in St. Augustine, Florida. He has also developed a one-man show entitled Many Flags, Many Colors, which takes the audience through a cast of little known unsung heroes. An entire encampment of history story tellers and re-enactors will be entertaining on the Thunder Gulch campground. Turtle Woman, the Ocala Seminoles, an 1800 s Surveyor and his family, the Blacksmith, all will be present to bring our rich past alive. James is the recipient of the 2006 Interpretive Guide Award from the Castillo de San Marcos, U.S. Park Service. He has been a speaker for the U.S. Army Reserve, Florida National Guard, Florida A&M University, the Duval County Magnet Program teachers and has led tours and presentations at Fort Mose for various Florida schools and St. Louis Urban League. Bullock is also a re-enactor in the Flight to Freedom Program for the National Park Service and presents a Black Seminole program at the Fountain of Youth Park in St. Augustine. He participates in other re-enactments and programs including the War Eagle Native American Festival at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama.

4 City of Bunnell is 100 years old! The 4th of July was extra fun in Flagler County as the Historic Roads committee helped to celebrate the city of Bunnell s 100th birthday. The cake float with images from The Flagler Historical Society was a hit in the Flagler Beach 4th of July parade. Heritage Crossroads Chairman Barb Kelly and members of the Bunnell Centennial group organized bus tours of historic Bunnell Florida. The Historic Roads group also has produced a walking tour of this Florida community featuring its homes and history. 100 years old! The Heritage Crossroads group is participating in the celebration of this Florida Community once known as The Bunnell Colony. This special cake of the Bunnell Centennial Committee offers photos from the Flagler County Historical Society Flagler County Corvette Club is actively supporting the Heritage Crossroads Festival. Dan Beyer, Chairman of the Long Range Cruise Committee and Heritage volunteer Cathy Cook drive in the Flagler Beach 4th of July parade. We are growing!.help is needed. Plan on attending the next Historic Cross Roads meeting, first Tuesday of every month AT 9 a.m. in the Flagler County Administration Building YOU WILL BE WELCOME HERITAGE CROSSROADS MILES OF HISTORY Mission Statement The mission of Heritage Crossroads is to highlight the historic resources of Florida s first Heritage Highway- ranging from the Florida Agricultural Museum to the Bulow Plantation Ruins - by promoting, enhancing and preserving the unique character of these resources and their place in Florida s history. Through education and interpretation we will enhance the experience of visitors, and the community s appreciation of the region s heritage. Heritage Crossroads Miles of History is a not-for-profit, all-volunteer group in Flagler County. We are not only a member of the Florida Scenic Highways program with the Florida Department of Transportation, but also have the distinction of being the first in the State of Florida to be awarded the Heritage designation from the FDOT. This means that our 92 miles of highways and byways are recognized for their scenery as well as their importance in history. Thanks to all the work and effort made by the volunteers during our designation phase, the history along those 92 miles was collected and submitted to the FDOT to enable the first ever historic designation. We have a number of projects in the works at the present time, including working toward building a Welcome Center at the north end of Flagler County on US 1 and Old Kings Road. Progress on this project is coming along and we have Joseph Pozzuloi s (local architect) drawings of the proposed building and layout. We also have the support of our Flagler County Commissioners for this project. We have also been trying to obtain a small pocket park in Bunnell at the crossroads of SR100 and US1. We have been working with the City of Bunnell toward this goal. We want to put up an historic kiosk, benches and landscaping so it will become an attractive little park for welcoming visitors into town. We held our first annual Flagler Heritage Festival in December of last year. It was at the Flagler County Fairgrounds and included a luncheon for Flagler s Pioneer family descendants. Sisco Deen (who is himself a Pioneer descendant) was a great help with research on the families, and also served as Master of Ceremonies at the luncheon. We had all of the Flagler County historical entities represented that day along with several re enactors. We are always looking for more people interested in the local or near history of our county to help us with promoting Flagler County and preserving and sharing our local history. Our dues are $10 a year for an individual; $30 for a business; $50 for a Patron; $100 for a Bronze; $200 for a Silver; and $500 for a Gold membership. Our regular monthly meetings are the first Tuesday of each month at 9:00 am at the Government Services Building (the Dome Building) on SR100 just outside of Bunnell. EVERYONE IS WELCOME!!!
