Prairie Capital Corvair Association P.O. Box 954 Springfield, Illinois The Flat Six June Officers President -Lyle Rigdon (217) Vice-President Garry Biggs (217) Secretary-TimMahler (217) Treasurer-Rhona Hall (217) Membership-Chris Hall (217) Historian/Inventory Garry Biggs (217) FlatSix Editor Tim Mahler (217) Board of Directors Jerry McKenzie (2016) (217) Allen Monts (2016) (309) Bev Buck (2016) (217) Mike Hall (2017) (217) From the President Greetings Everyone! The May meeting had great turn out! We had 30 people who signed in, more than we have had in quite some time. Several folks drove their cars to the meeting in order to participate in the morning photo shoot at the Crowne Plaza and/or the after the meeting photo shoot at Cardinal Hill. What a great opportunity for everyone to knock off the winter storage dust and get their vehicles out in the sunlight. The eleven vehicles in the Crowne Plaza Shoot included: Sue and Garry Biggs brought their awesome early gold coupe, Jim and Bernie Allen drove down in their blue wagon, Ruth and Richard Boxdorfer drove up in their FC tow truck - which was spotlessly prepped, Billie and Mike Kelly cruised over in their lovely late model Blue Angel, Rhona, Mike and Chris Hall brought three vehicles (a wagon, van, and rampside, respectively) with the Great Pumpkin van being the hardest to miss in the group, Neta and Dick Moon drove down from Pekin in their perfect early black four door, Sue and Brian Seyller brought their neat green late model convertible, Kay and Bud Laubach trailered their very original early wagon down, and finally Lonny and I drove down the day before in our burgundy late model convert in order to attend a conference on campus at UIS. Rhona and Mike s grouping included a freshly completed wagon added to the road worthy portion of their collection. Rhona had a huge smile on her face the entire time she was driving it. Something tells me Mike is going to have a hard time getting the keys back from her. Unfortunately, Lonny and I had a family gathering to attend in Danville later that day, so we had to hit the road just as the meeting ended - thus missing the Biggs toy tour and the post-meeting photo shoot at Cardinal Hill. I am hoping that Tim will have an update for both in his minutes/comments. Sue and Garry Biggs, assisted by Shelby and Bill Berta, hosted both the early convention prep meeting and

the regular meeting in the Bigg s awesome garage-mahal. What a fantastic place!! I m sure a number of us were drooling over the square footage, the more than ample lighting, the artwork/memorabilia, their awesome cars and (my personal favorite) the heated floors. We certainly want to thank the Bigg s and Berta s for allowing us to meet in their home and for the toy tour. The meeting went off smoothly with the Secretary, Treasurer, and Membership reports being approved on a motion by Brian Seller and second by Billie Kelly. Bill Berta gave us a history of Cardinal Hill and we learned that includes a link to Bob Waldmire, a local historian/artist a title that does not nearly cover Bob s incredible genius. [Side note: the Route 66 museum in Pontiac houses Bob s VW bus and his converted school bus camper along with some of his artwork. The museum simply refers to it as the Bob Waldmire Experience which is a very fitting title. Lonny and I have toured this museum and the military museum next door and highly recommend both - along with just wandering around Pontiac. It s a great place to spend a day.] Turning to the calendar, Bev and Rick Buck suggested that we move the September meeting to the Chatham Railroad museum. A tour of the museum would be the program for the month as well. That suggestion was approved on a motion from Chris Hall and a second from Mike Hall. We also agreed to move the November meeting from the 12th to the 19th. We briefly talked about the June trip to Pekin for the annual picnic. Everyone is to bring a side dish/dessert and table service. The Moon s and the Allen s will furnish the main course. After some prodding, pleading and outright begging, Dick said that there is a possibility that the Moon s world famous ice-cream might also be available. Yum!!! Frankly, had Dick held out a bit longer, someone in the group might have offered corporate incentives what we call bribes in Illinois to see if that might persuade Dick to crank out some of Dick and Neta s homemade frozen delicacy. The group also approved the amended bylaws on a motion from Mike Hall and a second from Garry Biggs. I do want to thank the members of the bylaw committee for their work. Being tagged to work on these types of things is a thankless task, but one that has to be done. The tech tip of the month brought out quite a few comments including that it is possible to clear carb jets with a fine wire or by putting your hand over the carb throat while the engine is running (Tim Mahler). We also had an interesting debate over which octane of fuel we should use. I had asked if anyone has found a higher rating than 93, which most Shell stations will have. This touched off a discussion over whether or not we need to run such a high number and that running whatever number you need to prevent pinging would suffice. I always put the 93 stuff in our car, just to avoid the problem. Besides, it s a small tank so the extra $$ it takes is cheap insurance. Finally, I believe it is fair to say that the club is, and has always been, about getting together to enjoy one another s company through the ownership of these rather odd little cars, whose preservation binds us together and gives us a common ground for great conversation and comradery. See you in Pekin in June friends! Lyle and Lonny Rigdon

May PCCA Meeting see the President s Column for more details!! WOW. Garry and Sue Biggs offered to host the May meeting in their new Garage Mahal. What started as just holding an open house/garage program evolved into hosting the entire meeting for the afternoon. Thank you very much Garry and Sue. The garage is fantastic as were all the nice cars inside (and out) of the garage. The garage decor, from various purchases and gifts were also very interesting. Those who ventured into the house were met with another wonderful experience. The house decor is great very nicely done. Then you could venture downstairs to the toy room to see the very well organized, date I say museum like? - display of Garry s toy collection. Garry and Sue also provided refreshments for the meeting with a great assist from Shelby and Bill Berta the cookies Shelby baked were delicious especially those mint chocolate chip ones. I got on the scale the next day and it just said Go Run. I ll let the photo s do the talking. The Biggs had two Corvairs, and a Chevelle, I believe, in this garage. A red 64 convertible was in the corner while the great 61 Coupe was parked out front ready to venture out to the Photo shoot after the meeting. In the driveway next to the Coupe, were Jim and Bernies Allen s 61 Lakewood wagon and Richard and Ruth Boxdorfer s Corvair FC Towtruck. Further afield, parked along the street were ten more Corvairs from the four corners of Illinois - North, South, East and West. The Hall s each drove their own Corvair this month Rhona in a wagon, Chris drove the Rampside and Mike the 8 door Greenbrier. There were all looking sharp ready for the next fun cruise-in or car show. Across the street was Tim 66 red coupe. Also, Bud and Kay Laubach had their red wagon parked ready to for the next tour to where ever it was pointed. Back on the Biggs side of the street will find Dick and Neta s 63 black sedan parked behind Bob Gwins other brand classic. The other brand is a Ford but it is a nice car. Lyle and Lonnie Rigdon arrived after my walk down the street in their maroon convertible. Jim and Beulah Collier also were at the meeting arriving intheir maroon coupe. I missed both the maroon cars before the meeting but they both appear in Shelby s wonderful photos at the Cardinal Hill Candle Shop. I did managed to spot Brian and Sue Seyller s green convertible parked behind the Moon s sedan. And the other Corvair that caught my eye because I did not recognize it. It belonged to Billie Kelley (and Mike), a nice Blue coupe with Corvair proudly shown on the door panel. 14 Corvairs in total. 3 wagons, 3 Fcs. Convertibles, 4 doors, Coupes. A very nice collection of Corvairs being driven on a very nice Spring day. Photo Shoots Crowne Plaza and Cardinal Hill Candles and Crafts Two photo shoots were held on meeting day one before the meeting which was followed by Lunch at the nearby Bob Evans. The second was after the meeting at the Cardinal Hill Candles and Crafts shop a short drive down the road from the Biggs. Shelby Berta conduction the post meeting photo shoot. The Candle shop is in a converted Corn crib with old wood planks from way back when. It was a very interesting place to visit and lacked the usual strong candle scent other candle shops have or at least my nose thought the aroma was mild to almost non-existent important for those with allergies. The crafts included pen drawings of route 66 to rock fountains. If you missed this meeting and photo shoot, I encourage you to stop by after a PCCA meeting or during the convention (it is a short drive from the Crowne Plaza). The RT66 connection is great and the shop just interesting.

June Picnic Morrissey Park in North Pekin New Location same great fun Corvair Display, PCCA picnic. Morrissey Park North Pekin PCCA will be meeting at the Morrissey Park in North Pekin. Parking for Corvair Display starts at 11:30am. Lunch at 12:00pm. Sandwich makin's and drinks will be provided. Potluck dishes will be welcomed. There is a rumor of ice cream. Potluck dishes will be welcomed. If anyone needs help along the way, call Jim Allen at (309) or Dick Moon at (309) We will help you find your way. Caravan from Springfield Sherman rest stop, just north of exit 100 on I-55 leaving for Pekin at 10:25am. It s about an hour drive from the rest area to the park on a good day. DIRECTIONS TO MORRISSEY PARK IN NORTH PEKIN If coming from the South or East, generally: - Take whatever route you need to get to Morton, Il. - From Morton, take I-74 toward Peoria for about two miles until I-474 separates to the left, heading for Pekin. - Take I-474 about four miles to an exit for Pekin and East Peoria. You should see Illinois River bridge in the valley below. Get off at this exit. - Turn left toward Pekin at end of ramp. - Go through three signal lights, keeping in right hand lane. - Morrissey Park is on the right, directly across from a Chrysler-Jeep dealer. We will park along street, and have our fun at the shelter nearby. If coming from the North or Northwest: - Find a way to get onto I-474 (separates from I-74 just west of Peoria) heading toward Bloomington. If coming from due north (Chillicothe?) on Il. Rt. 29, the Il. Rt. 6 exit just south of the Catepillar plant is what you want. Il. Rt. 6 circles around Peoria and magically becomes I-474 at the I-74 interchange west of Peoria. - Take I-474 to cross Illinois River (about six miles) and take Pekin exit immediately at end of bridge. - Turn right at end of ramp onto Il. Rt Go through two signal lights, keeping in right hand lane. - Morrissey Park is on the right, directly across from a Chrysler-Jeep dealer. Look for Corvairs and unhinged Corvair lovers waving at you. Coming down I-55 from the Chicago area? : - It's a little farther, but a cleaner route to go via the Bloomington interchange with I-74 toward Peoria. - Take I-74 around Morton, then veer left where I-474 heads toward Pekin. - In about four miles take the exit pointing to Pekin. - Turn left at end of ramp, toward Pekin. - Pass three signal lights, keep in right hand lane. - Morrissey Park is directly across from Chrysler-Jeep dealer. Turn in. You'll know us.

AUCTIONS AMERICA/AACA MEET IN MAY Bill Berta The Auburn Spring Collector Auction and Swap Meet along with the Antique Auto Club of America Show at Auburn, Indiana in early May has historically been a fun event for old car enthusiasts was no exception as Shelby and I enjoyed both events. There were plenty of collector cars to view and admire. Also available in Auburn are several special interest museums particularly for old car enthusiasts. Among the approximately 400 cars for sale were four late model Corvairs. As a special guest this year master car restorer and TV personality Wayne Carini made an appearance signing autographs and mixing with the auction attendees. He stars in two one-hour TV specials on the Discovery Velocity channel and is the host of Chasing Classic Cars in its eighth season, also on Velocity. When meeting him at his table for an autograph, his response was like that of seeing an old friend after a long absence. He was very friendly and gracious. Of course, this was a chance for a photo op and everyone upon their turn would hand their camera (or phone) to his assistant for a picture. This May weekend at Auburn is one to consider doing as it has something for everyone interested in old cars. There s plenty to do. We re definitely putting it on our list for SpringFest in Helen Georgia was as enjoyable as usual except for a downpour on Thursday night that caused the autocross scheduled for Friday to be canceled. Those of you who have been to SpringFest know how small the parking lot used for autocross is, and in addition, there are several low spots that were quickly converted to shallow ponds by the Thursday rains. No autocross. The excess water did not seem to damage the Clark's Corvair endeavor, however, or the other indoor vendors. PCCA was represented in Helen this year by a small group: Bill and Thelma Pierson, Jim and Bernie Allen, Dick and Neta Moon. The ladies boosted the village's financial picture somewhat (I exaggerate) for two days while Bill and Jim were very helpful to the SpringFest itself: judging cars and generally doing what might be needed by the organizers. Dick mostly just wandered around and as expected, counted vehicles. Without canvassing the entire community, he came up with 88 Corvairs that were staged in the three categories (Concours, People's Choice, and Display) Saturday. As usual, there were several Corvairs in People's Choice and Display that probably should have been judged, but that is another matter. Helen had a beautiful sunny, warm Saturday, and the village was crowded, not only with Corvair folks, but with many visitors who must have wondered what those nutty Corvair people were up to. Anyway, there was a good turnout and at least some of the visitors were amazed that there are indeed, after 50 or so years, Corvairs actually being driven around the country and looking good while doing it. The Pierson black early Turbo Coupe garnered a 95+ score as judged, and Jim Allen claimed 720 miles driven to SpringFest (in the '61 Lakewood) to win the Long Distance Driven award. On both Friday and Saturday evenings there were bountiful meals provided for those registered at the event, and eventually the usual numerous drawings provided take-home items for a large number of attendees. We will not count how many times Bill and Thelma carted away gifts, but there were several. Sunday morning it was time to check-out and head on down (or up) the road for home. After yet another enjoyable two days and three evenings in Helen, we would encourage more folks who want to see some beautiful North Georgia scenery, warm weather, and very accommodating and friendly Corvair folks all around Helen to think about going to SpringFest You will remember it and see lots of Corvairs there, maybe even your own. OK, that's all. See you soon. Dick Moon

2016 Springfield Convention Meeting Notes June 2016 Just 1 ½ months away! The suspense is mind boggling! Prior to the general PCCA meeting, a photo shoot was held at the Crowne Plaza Springield at roughly 11:00 am. The editor missed the photo shoot as he was cleaning up a fallen tree from the storm at his dad s house. But Tim did make the 1:00pm meeting. After the photo shoot, the group headed over to Bob Evans for some wonderful food I listened to several conversations indicating the food was good and too much. The Bob Evans is about 2 blocks south of the Convention Hotel next to the new Shell gas station that will be utilized for the economy rally. Convenient and reasonably priced. Tim counted12 Corvairs at the meeting location 9 would have been at the morning photo shoot. The monthly convention meeting started at roughly 1:00 pm in the new garage of Garry and Sue Biggs. The meeting did not cover a lot of details because most have been handled prior to the meeting via and phone conversation. I suspect that that will be the mode for most decisions going forward. An overall status will be given at the next PCCA general meeting in Pekin in June. The main convention events were briefly discussed The Rally, Economy Rally, Concours and Autocross. The basic items for these events have been gathered, routes planned. The Gas Station for the Economy Rally was also approached to verify that we could indeed utilize that station. The manager was quite receptive. Dick Moon mentioned that one Rally checkpoint was being shifted per the recommendation of the area s coordinator. Dick indicated the new location was indeed better. Contact with the CCC group indicates the items needed for the autocross have been gathered, or at least plans to obtain the last few items are in place. Finally, Concours is ready as always with new LED flashlights for us undercarriage judges. Yeah. Sign up sheets for Convention volunteers (aka workers) were on the workbench. Those volunteering to work whenever, whereever are greatly appreciated to allow gaps to be filled. The registration desk will probably the focal point for the final drafts of who is expected to where during the convention. It is centrally located and the Chairs should check there frequently for updates. The Hospitality room may get a copy for that room mainly because if its somewhat remote location. Door prizes are still needed several have been received, thank you. Requests to various local companies are being made now, as well. Mike Hall reported that the Trophies and Dash Plaques are done. Volunteer vests have been ordered. The vests may be kept all week by the volunteer, with the request that they be turned-in after the convention so the next convention may utilize them. Roughly 168 cases of bottled water has been obtained for the hospitality room, Concours judges. The hospitality room is allowed to serve anything without much limit on what. Illinois and Springfield Health codes are such that homemade items are basically not allowed. That is OK as the plan is to offer packaged snacks from chips to cooies as well as freshly popped popcorn and maybe another bulk saly snack. Beverages will be mostly water coffee and sodas a prepackaged mix was discussed and may be an option. Mike also mentioned that over 1300 room nights have been booked at hotels that have offered convention attendee a special rate. This does not count all the other rooms that may also be booked. NOTE: Packet Stuffing and Goodie bag stuffing will be at Mike and Rhona Hall s new residence outside of Rochester just down the road from the Community building. July 2, July 9 is the PCCA meeting at the Crowne Plaza Springfield final walk thru of the facilities. Next Meeting June 11, 2016 at 1:00 pm prior to the regularly scheduled PCCA meeting at the Rochester Community Building. This allows for a single trip for the many members who are further afield. All are welcome to listen to the conversation, ask questions or offer suggestions.

Prairie Capital Corvair Association General Membership Meeting May 14, 2016 Minutes The May meeting of Prairie Capital Corvair Association was called to order on Saturday, May 14, 2016, by President Lyle Rigdon with the Pledge of Allegiance. The location was the work shop portion of the Biggs Garage. Those who drove their Corvairs to the meeting were recognized. There were fourteen Corvairs at the meeting. Mike Hall 8 door Greenbrier, Rhona Hall, 61 Wagon, Chris Hall, Rampside. Jim and Bernie Allen 61 Lakewood Wagon, Garry and Sue Biggs 61 Coupe, Billie and Mike Kelly Blue Coupe, Tim Mahler 66 red Coupe, Bud and Kay Laubach s red wagon, Brian and Sue Seyller green Convertible, Dick and Neta Moon s 63 four door sedan, Lyle and Lonnie Rigdon s maroon convertible, and Ruth and Richard Boxdorfer s Corvair Tow truck. Jim and Beulah Collier 65 coupe was also spotted. And Inside the garage was the Biggs 64 convertible and some other very nice automobiles, all with a sporty attitude. The secretary report was printed in the Flat Six. Rhona Hall provided the treasurer s report indicating a final balance of $4, with 528 in dues deposits. Rhona also shared with the membership two letters received thanking PCCA for the memorial donation - Notably for Hal Turngren and the Wounded Warrious charity. Chris Hall gave a bried membership report. The concent agenda was moved for approval by Brian Seyller and seconded by Billie Kelley. Approved. Lyle congratulated Shelby Berta for the excellent photo on the cover of the Communique which featured the SMCC and PCCA Corvairs on the Rock Of Chains Bridge. This led to the second photo shoot opportunity of day at the Cardinal Hill Candle shop. The shop is located in a converted Corn crib and is an interesting place. The target time was 4:30 with Shelby being the photographer for this shoot. The June Picnic, next PCCA Meeting, will be at a new location this year but will still feature a potluck style lunch with the main meat and soft drinks provided by the Moons and Allens. With the SOS Auto show cancelled for 2016, The Chatham Train depot museum, represented by PCCA members Bev And Rick Buck, has moved their annual cruise in and fund raiser to September10 to fill the void. PCCA was invited to join the event and use the depot for the PCCA meeting. A motion to have the PCCA September meeting at the Chatham depot was made by Chris Hall and seconded by Mike Kelley. The motion was approved. Garry Biggs mentioned that the November meeting at the Rochester Community building has been moved to November 19 th instead of the 12 th because the room was already booked for the 12 th. The next item on the agenda was the bi-annual bylaw review. Lyle mentioned that the latest revisions of the by-laws have been available on the PCCA website and a paper copy sent to those requesting one. Lyle asked if there were any questions, concerns or comments on the revisions. None were fielded. A motion was made to approve the by-law revisiosn as presented was made by Mike Hall and seconded by Garry Biggs. All present approved the motion. Lyle asked if there are any tech tips today. Carb Tip discussion on the idle circuit of the Corvair Carburetors and methods used to clear the circuit was held. Details are in the CORSA tech guide. A followup discussion on octane ratings and their meaning was also held in relation to the highest available octane in central Illinois (93) for most road use stations. Good of the Cause comments. Garry Biggs reminded everyone that January 2017 is PCCA s 40 th anniversary. Charter members include Bob Nicholson, Garry and Sue Biggs and Bill and Shelby Berta. June 2016 will also be the Biggs 50 th wedding anniversary. Congratulations. And finally, May 14, today, is Jim and Bernie Allens 56 th wedding anniversary. Congratulations. A motion to adjoin was made by Dick Moon seconded by Mike Hall. Motion carried. Respectfully submitted, Tim Mahler, Secretary
