1 The Dunolly and District Community News The Volume 33 Welcome Record Issue 46 Wednesday 5th December 2018 Donation: 50c Music in Dunolly We are so lucky in our town to have such a plethora of events. There always seems to be something happening in our community, whether it be art or music based. This time around we had a number of bands perform at the Dunolly Golf Club on 24th November. The place literally shook with the sound of not only the bands, but the great number in the audience. The place was full to capacity, with some people even sitting outside. The highlight was the Jane Saw band who had the crowd roaring, especially with their terrific trumpeter, but great showings were by Bryce Rawlings, and also our own Groove Dudes who reprised their talent the following week at the Railway Hotel. What a great afternoon. Susan Anderson

The reader declared solemnly that there was still no result in the seat of Ripoff in the State election. Some person in America (where else?) called their child Abcde! Don t know how it is pronounced. Wonder how many others will follow suit anything to be different. My lap-top and my printer have had a serious falling out, no longer talking to each other. The worst bit is they didn t tell me about it I only found out when no story emerged from the printer. I may yet sack both of them. Did you know that earwigs have wings? Me neither- but it must be true- it s on Google. I rescued a little tree from Mortuary Row in the big green shed shop some years ago. It took a while for it to get to any size, but this year it has bloomed. The flowers are the same as those on those huge trees on Broadway that make such a mess on the roofs of the town. It is definitely in the wrong place in my garden. The little yellow spider on the daisy bush has gone. The last time I saw it, it was consuming a moth sort of insect which was as big as it was. Maybe it was biting off more than it could chew. Did you know that all salt is the same just different colours and size? Rosie DUMB FENG SHUI A picture of a bear inside the front door will protect against burglars. If it is a picture of a koala, thieves will come to your house, get stoned and wee on you. 3 5th December 2018 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 33 Issue 46 Page 3 LETTERS TO EDITOR Monday Meeting in Gardens A good number of Dunolly people attended the Central Goldfields Council meeting in Gordon Gardens on Monday evening. Council representatives were on hand cooking the BBQ and listening carefully to residents ideas for redeveloping the gardens. Primary school pupils arrived, armed with some seriously good ideas and were keenly listened to. Older community members had some great ideas too. Things like shade sails for the playground area, more seating for grandparents watching children, and water fountains. Perhaps some of the currently-unused tennis courts could be removed and the area utilised for something else older children might prefer. There was no shortage of positive input. It is obvious that locals see Gordon Gardens as a great asset to Dunolly and were happy to have their say in its future. Now Council has the job of collating all the ideas, seeing what is feasible and what isn't and then seeing if funding can be found for the works. Vicky Frizzell Holes in the Road! It was surprising to find freshly-dug holes in the middle of the gravel section of Alice St (behind Andy Walker s shed) last Saturday. Not only were there two holes in the road itself, but another eight had been dug in the shoulder of the road. Some were about 30cm deep. They were in the perfect position for someone to drive into if they had to swerve to miss a kangaroo. The site is a popular one for kangaroos to emerge from the trees unexpectedly. No attempt had been made to fill in any of these holes. That really surprised me. As a regular bush walker for the past 30 years, I have seen the evidence of prospectors digging holes in all sorts of places, but all of them have been filled in, to varying degrees sometimes, but still filled a bit. Not these. It made me think that the person who did it is not a local or an experienced prospector. It is really disturbing to think that somebody who was in Dunolly last weekend thought it was OK to dig holes in what is obviously a well-maintained public gravel road. Many people tow heavy loads of water down that road and potholes grow quickly under that sort of traffic. When I reported the matter to the Central Goldfields Shire, staff were just as annoyed as I was and were concerned for the safety issues and the logistics of getting a crew out to repair it. Vicky Frizzell. The staged redevelopment of the Lions Park in Pyramid Hill was allocated $32,000 while $25,000 was provided to support redevelopment works at the Wedderburn Caravan Park. Other projects allocated funding include the Rheola Hall verandah and flood lighting, installation of a barbecue and shade structure in Newbridge and repairs at the Newbridge Public Hall, solar panels at Dingee Hall and outdoor exercise equipment at Wedderburn s Soldiers Memorial Park. In total $255,908 was allocated by Council to the community. Dingee CWA 90th anniversary celebrations Congratulations to the Dingee and District branch of the Country Women s Association (CWA) on their wonderful 90th birthday celebrations. To celebrate this significant milestone, the CWA organised a Mystery History Country Train Trip which saw 65 members from various CWA branches in Melbourne travel via V/Line from Southern Cross Station to Dingee. Upon arrival at Dingee Station, guests were greeted by CWA Dingee members and library volunteers, and enjoyed a wonderful morning tea (complete with a cake to celebrate the anniversary). Guests then enjoyed a tour of the region s sights, including the Dingee Bush Nursing Centre, East Loddon P-12 College (and the World War One Memorial site), Terrick Terrick National Park, Mitiamo Golf Club and the historic Prairie Park homestead. The day ended with a dust storm to help send off the visitors as they boarded the train to return to Melbourne. The day, which was supported by V/Line, Loddon Transit and Bendigo Bank Inglewood and Districts Community Bank Branch, saw plenty of positive feedback. Many of the visitors taking part in the tour are now looking forward to returning to our region to explore it further. Regional Roads Victoria This year saw a change by the State Government in how the Victorian road network is managed with the introduction of Regional Roads Victoria (RRV). According to RRV, the organisation will provide a coordinated, consistent and integrated approach to improving the regional road network. It has also set up a dedicated hotline for regional Victorians to ask questions about the network, report hazards, enquire about works and provide feedback. To contact the RRV hotline call (133 RRV) you can also visit the RRV website at regionalroads.vic.gov.au where you can also submit an enquiry. Did you know? Since Council s Community Planning Program was introduced 16 years ago, Council and Loddon communities continue to attract significant external funding through the community planning process. Significant funding include the Wedderburn Streetscape Improvement Project, Serpentine Janiember Park upgrade, Pyramid Hill Memorial Hall Precinct, Boort Park upgrade, Tarnagulla Community Centre and Inglewood Town Hall Hub development. 13 5th December 2018 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 33 Issue 46 Page 13 RHEOLA - A TOWN OF MANY NAMES The first white settlement in the area was in 1843 when the squatter William Morrison Hunter built his homestead alongside where the Rheola township is now. He called it Kingower after the Aboriginal name of the hills overlooking his homestead. In 1853 gold was discovered near the northern boundary of the station so it was called Kingower. Soon after gold was discovered near the southern boundary. It was named McIntyres after the manager of Kingower Station. This left the area in between without a name. It was misleading to still call it Kingower when it was so far from the town of Kingower. William Tyler built his Halfway Hotel near where the Rheola Recreation Reserve is now. He gave his address as McIntyres Road but most people called it Tylers or Tylers Flat. After gold was found there in 1869 it became Tylers Rush. In 1868 a Scotsman, Alexander Clelland found gold 2km north of Tyler s hotel. For a short time it was known as Clellands. He named it Byr Lyn or Burr Lyn after a place near Glasgow. This was mistakenly corrupted to Berlin and the name adopted for the whole goldfield. As the rush at Clellands expanded it was traced down to John s private land. The settlement that was established there became Johns Town. It was not insignificant and had a large Chinese population. At its peak Johns Town had three gambling houses. A school was started here. But instead of calling it Johns Town it was named Kangderaar Common School after the Aboriginal name of the creek. A few months later gold was found right at the current site of Rheola. The town that grew up here became Berlin. As the population grew to 4,000 the northern suburb became View Point and the southern suburb Christmas Flat. All this multiple name confusion changed when it 1876 Berlin was officially renamed after a large forest in Wales called Rheola. Central Goldfields Shire Chief Administrator Noel Harvey said residents were frustrated at not having an Early Voting Centre located in the Shire in the lead up to last month s (24/11) Victorian State Election. We ve received a significant amount of feedback from residents about how difficult it was to access an Early Voting Centre with the only Early Voting Centre for Ripon located in Stawell. In this election many volunteers at the Energy Breakthrough were seriously inconvenienced. It s no surprise that the Central Goldfields Shire had one of the lowest early voting statistics in the State, and I believe both commissions have a duty to make it as easy as possible for residents to exercise their democratic right. Council also received considerable feedback from participants in the Energy Breakthrough event indicating that they wished to vote in Maryborough prior to Election Day. The Victorian State Election clashes with the Energy Breakthrough event every fourth year. We re hopeful that the AEC and VEC will respond by guaranteeing an Early Voting Centre for our community, which will make voting much easier and more convenient in the future for both residents and visitors to Maryborough. We live in a diverse community and local residents have differing levels of capacity to travel. Having access to an Early Voting Centre in the Central Goldfields Shire is a must have.
