They distributed leaflets around the town throughout the day.
2 What has Conservation done for you? In 50 years of Conservation rules, this is the first opportunity for Shrewsbury to celebrate how the town has retained so much of its unique heritage. the opening by the Mayor with short introductory messages from Shropshire Wildlife Trust and Shrewsbury Civic Society. Mayor Jane Mackenzie opens the day with an insightful speech on Conservation in our newly refurbished meeting room. Shropshire Council Surgery about Listed Buildings and those in Conservation Areas, includes the Design and Conservation Awards Scheme. Karen Rolfe ran a Conservation clinic throughout the day with other members of her department. A rarely shown exhibitions by: Shropshire Historic Environment Record Archive Giles Carey from Shropshire Council Archives with members of his team were on duty to talk about their extensive
3 The planned events that happened during the day at The Bear Steps, St Alkmund s Place: The opening by the Mayor with short introductory messages from Shropshire Wildlife Trust and Shrewsbury Civic Society. An exhibition by: The Shropshire Historic Environment Record Archive. The Renovation of Bear Steps Civic Society (presented a video and exhibition about renovating the medieval Bear Steps in the 1968/1973). A guided Walking Tour around the historic heart of town (Town Crier Martin Wood) Ask Shropshire Council Surgery about Listed Buildings and those in Conservation Areas. This includes the Design and Conservation Awards Scheme. Take the quiz/questionnaire to raise public understanding and gain views about heritage and conservation (UCS university students) and THE CONSERVATION TABLE at The Bear Steps. See the Civic Day ambassadors distributing leaflets around the town A walk from the Lord Hill Column to the central Bear Steps, linked with Waterloo Day and Lord Hill.
4 The Renovation of Bear Steps Exhibition was well attended with a few visitors who were involved with the original project. Mr Brian Edwards who was the site foreman for the renovation and sadly died one year after completion at age 41 was represented by his surviving family who attended and were delighted to see The Book of Donors which they had presented to the Society in 1974 in memory of Mr Edwards. 5 Outside the building Mary de Saulles (the author of The Book of Shrewsbury) was on hand to sign her book seen talking with the Mayor. 7 Mike Southern with his Photographic exhibition in The Great Hall featuring many photos of Shrewsbury. The half-hour talks in the early evening. 4.30pm Lord Hill and the Column A talk by Richard Hayes about the significance of Lord Hill and the Column s history to the Abbey Foregate Area. 5.30pm The Shrewsbury Wayfinding Project. Aleks Vladimirov of the Shrewsbury BID will give the first talk and unveiling the first of what is coming for the town s signposting. 6.30pm Conservation in Shrewsbury Dr Andy Wigley of Shropshire Council will discuss issues about the Special Character of areas in Shrewsbury s Conservation Area. 7.30pm Civic Pride and Conservation David Evans (National Civic Voice Trustee) will give the national picture and the work of Civic Voice in battling for good stewardship of the nation s built environment.
