2 Library Books Below is a list of Goldfields Library Books that have failed to make their way back to base. Please check that they are not hiding in your unit, they have a habit of laying low on your bookshelf or hiding below eye level. If located please return to the community centre, the Goldfields (Bendigo) library is different to the village library. They require you to have a membership & sign books in and out and is located by the front door. The village books are at the rear of the community centre and work on a casual basis and are donated to us. If you would like to purchase one of these books you may leave a donation in the box otherwise just choose, read and return. The village may have to pay for the lost Goldfields books, so please have a look and return asap. Seniors Race Day - Wed Oct 10th Each year many Seniors from the surrounds of Bendigo and much further afield gather in the Silks Restaurant at the Bendigo Jockey Club for the annual Seniors Race Day. Thirteen B.R.V residents and three friends had a very pleasant day. The two course meal was tasty as usual with tea, coffee and bar drinks available all day. Some of us placed a few lucky bets and a couple of us had other wins. One of Joan's friends won a picnic hamper full of goodies for second prize, Best Outfit in the Fashion Parade while Glenda's friend Graeme won a lucky door prize of a travel rug. Our 'grumpy old men ' Len and Gerry decided not to socialize with us this year as in Gerry's words they wanted to "stay downstairs with the riffraff ". Words fail me and as I don't know what they got up to this year, I can't comment. However, on behalf of everyone, I will thank Len very much for arranging this day every year and for driving his car with Gerry and two residents as the bus was full. Also many thanks to Neil for our safe and pleasant drive to and from the course. See you all again next year. Sue Carolan.

4 TRAVEL TRAUMAS. On my recent break away I had some strange experiences. The first night we arrived in Dareton, near Mildura, there were emergency vehicles everywhere. The smell reminded me of when I lived in Koraleigh and the locals grew grapes. A large truck had rolled over turning a corner. Its load was 2 containers full of bladders filled with fermenting grapes. The crash had burst the bladders and the resulting mess and smell was permeating the whole area. In Broken Hill the drought had brought the wild life into town and emus and kangaroos were roaming the streets. Residents had special Kangaroo pellets they were feeding the kangaroos, hoping to deter them from eating the little grass there was in the gardens. Later on we came across a very eccentric man driving along the Barrier Highway. He had a load of very bleached cattle heads stacked on the back of his ute. Our coach driver said he just had to stop and take a photo and chat to the fellow. That was a strange encounter! In Quorn we stopped at the railway station to watch the steam engine firing up to head south. This is the Pichi Richi Tourist Railway and is run by volunteers. So if you can manage to go on a coach tour, even in Australia, you never know what unusual things you might see! Vel Newnham. Well done, Vel, Keep on travelling and telling us your travel tales. A bit of nonsense A farmer set out on his motor bike to check the fences on his extensive property. About 25 kilometres from home the bike ran out of oil. What to do? The farmer than spied a large goanna waddling in his direction. Quickly despatched, the goanna was drained of it s oil which was transferred to the fuel tank of the motor bike and away they went and were soon close to home. Hearing the sound of the bike, the farm dogs began barking loudly... and the bike ran up a tree! Shades of how excited Louise gets at this time of year! Must be her Birthday this month!

5 Another resident has a travel tale to tell. CAPE YORK WILDERNESS ADVENTURE. In 2014 my sister, Annie and I flew to Cairns and joined a small group with Outback Spirit. First day we travelled along the Captain Cook Highway one of Australia s most scenic drives, to Port Douglas. Next day we visited Mossman Gorge Centre and enjoyed the Mossman Gorge walk through rainforest with an indigenous guide who demonstrated traditional plants and food sources. We cruised along the Daintree River, with crocodiles lurking in the water, then crossed the river by ferry into the Daintree Rainforest. This is the oldest rainforest on earth and one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world. Later we enjoyed an exclusive tour at Cooper s Creek, another pristine rainforest. The fan palm galleries were a delight and the smell and stillness of the forest was a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. The next morning we headed to Cape Tribulation and on to the famous Bloomfield Track. This track is impassable in the wet season and there were numerous steep climbs and several creek crossings to negotiate. We enjoyed a bumpy ride and the driver did all the work. We were not to see sealed roads again until we were close or in towns and they were few and far between. We visited the Bloomfield Falls before heading to the Lion s Den Pub, an old bush pub, with shelves of pickled snakes in jars. They made my skin crawl! Then on to Cooktown, where Cpt. Cook Endeavour was beached after hitting the reef. Here we went to see the museum, the botanical gardens, and the historic cemetery with its Chinese shrine. The next day we left Cooktown along the Battle Camp Road to Laura known as Quinkan Country, famous for its rock art, over15,000 years old and among the top 10 art sites in the world. Then we trekked on the Peninsular road to Lotus Bird Lodge, located on the edge of a tranquil billabong. The abundance of wildlife here was incredible. Gary and Sue, our hosts provided excellent food that had to be brought in by helicopter weekly. Each couple had a small log cabin. When we returned there after dark there were dozens of baby frogs hopping around the bathroom and swimming in the toilet. One couple found a green tree snake in their toilet! Next day we cautiously walked around the billabong spotting birds. Sue breeds Gaudian Finches and releases them into the wild. Lotus Bird Lodge is inaccessible during the wet season so we were fortunate to have this really unique experience. We were sad to leave but it was time to continue our journey north. Rae Kemp.

Register your phone number(s) with the Australian Government s Do Not Call Register at It is a free service, which you will only need to complete once (per number). b. Telstra Call Guardian Handset. Telstra has developed a land line handset to help you block up to 1,000 numbers, while your saved contacts can call through. There is a quick access Call Block button right on the handset. Visit a Telstra shop or to learn more about it. Stay cyber safe! Rose s beautiful orchid Dendrobium, with 15 spikes. Apparently this has been a great year for orchids, Lawrie Green has a wonderful Cymbidium. We are blessed to have such lovely gardens and clever gardeners in our village. 7 Hi everyone, The 24 th November is turning out to be bigger than Ben Hur. The Victorian State Election is being held and the Polling Booth for this will be at the Spring Gully Tennis Club, however we are definitely having a pre-polling booth on site, I just don t have a firm date as yet watch this space. We are of course also holding the inaugural SPRING GULLY MARKET, on our front lawns. So far we have 25 confirmed stall holders, and we are pushing the shop locally motto. Local businesses, locally grown produce, locally sourced, locally made. Nothing imported and we are trying not to double up on similar items to offer a wide variety of options for your Christmas shopping experience. So far we have reached over 5700 people through Facebook and we are also advertising as a Community event elsewhere it should be an excellent day and we are all getting very excited about it. Please be sure to check the calendar for meeting dates and times, as we have had to move a couple around to suit other activities being held. Everyone seems to be very impressed with the new carpet in the Bamboo Room and now we need to start thinking about the Community Centre floor. I d love to hear your ideas, so if you can put something down on paper for me (get those crayons out) we will consider anything. We just need to take in to consideration everything that is held in this room. Sweepstakes are now open for Melbourne Cup, so be sure to drop in to the office and get involved. Please don t forget that while you are in the Office you can also drop in your Dry Cleaning, load your MYKI card, pay all of your bills and even withdraw cash from your bank. The more support we give these services, the more profit we make for the Village (100% of profits goes into the Village budget). You can of course always ask for copies of minutes from all meetings, grab an Activities calendar / birthday list and purchase anything from the Australia Post catalogues. If you would like to see us have more services available, just let us know and we ll try and arrange it. Our newly formed Environmental Impact Group is soon to have our 15 seconds of fame, with an article about Waste Warriors in the December edition of the GB Magazine this glossy magazine is put out by the City of Greater Bendigo. The article is already written and we are just waiting on photographers to finish it off. Well done to our Waste Warriors for being so pro-active and getting things off the ground.
