This year s event will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2010 from 2:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the 2000 Avenue of the Stars, in Century City. There will be wines available for the tasting from various regions of the state. Chairman s Note: Jerry Day, Tuolumne County er Chairman, FLICS The New Year is upon us, and with it comes new opportunities-- to film in California! FLICS was formed to work together to promote filming in our great state and provide better service to our clients. It is that service that I wish to focus on today. The FLICS education program begins with a manual originally created by the California. This document is chock full of information, including tips on how to handle a scouting trip, how to prepare a community for a filming event, the responsibilities of a FLICS member, and all the rules and regulations for filming in our state. Originally distributed as a fiveinch-thick, three-ring binder, the FLICS Manual is now distributed via CD-ROM. The manual is a great primer for the beginning film liaison and continues to be a useful reference. Continued, Page 5...

We re south of San Francisco And we are East of Eden. That James Dean film highlights our Steinbeck Country with its rural feel and agricultural fields. But Monterey County continues to be the chosen location for more than 200 other films, many taking advantage of the rugged coastline and dramatic vistas along the Monterey Peninsula. Film productions have ranged from Clint Eastwood s directorial debut with Play Misty for Me to Basic Instinct, We Were Soldiers, and classics like Rebecca, A Summer Place, Marilyn Monroe s Clash by Night, and even Roger Corman s The Terror, set in Big Sur. Nearly every make of car has been shot on this beautiful, coastal road that perches above the crashing waves. Commercials, fashion shoots, documentaries, travelogues, and independent films take advantage of great weather yearround. State parks and beaches are plentiful. Quaint village looks like Carmel and Pacific Grove. Private properties from mansions to ranches are available through the Monterey County. If you re looking for places like Monterey, Carmel, Salinas, Pacific Grove, Sand City, Marina, Seaside, Pebble Beach, Pt. Lobos, Big Sur or Cannery Row, you ll be looking in Monterey County! 3 Ridgecrest Doug Lueck, er Ridgecrest, California is a beautiful oasis in the middle of the Mojave High Desert. Be prepared for sunny days, multi-colored sunsets, clear starry nights, and at the same time receive metropolitan amenities with small town affordability. The Ridgecrest Regional (RRFC) serves the 10,000 square mile area in and around Ridgecrest, California, and is located just 2 ½ hours northeast of Los Angeles. Nearby Inyokern Airport (IYK) offers daily non-stop service from L.A. The RRFC was created in 1992, became a member of FLICS in 1993, and has hosted features including Jurassic Park, Dinosaur, Planet of the Apes, Holes, Hidalgo, Hulk, Iron Man and Land of the Lost, as well as dozens of television shows, music videos and well over 1,000 commercials. Ridgecrest takes pride in being a film friendly community! The Ridgecrest region has had a motion picture history almost as old as the movies themselves. Red Rock Canyon State Park was a primary location for westerns as early as the 1920 s. The Inyokern Airport with its Runway 28 trailing off into the majestic Sierra Nevadas hosts many commercials each year. Our most unique filming location is without a doubt the Trona Pinnacles; the 500 strange tufa towers have been the backdrop for that other worldly effect. Along with the Trona Pinnacles, Poison Canyon, Robber s Roost and Olancha Sand Dunes premiere as top movie locations. Another popular filming location, Cuddeback Dry Lake Bed, a 2 mile by 4 mile piece of dirt that hosts numerous TV commercials and music videos each year. The RRFC offers immediate response to the needs of all types of film production, from still photography to feature films and everything in between, and can typically process a City of Ridgecrest or Bureau of Land Management film permit in 3-5 business days. Within just a few hundred square miles live majestic redwood forests, winding country roads, an historic narrowgauge railroad, colorful seaside villages, a beachside amusement park, agricultural fields, scenic lighthouses, dramatic coastal bluffs, and 29 miles of sunny beaches. On Main Beach, adjacent to the wharf, the century-old Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is home to the Giant Dipper, a vintage wooden roller coaster, and the Looff Carousel, built in The Beach Boardwalk has hosted many productions, including Sudden Impact, The Lost Boys, and others. Capitola Village radiates the charm of a vintage beach town. Nearby, Soquel Village s two-lane roads winding up through mountain wineries. The streets of downtown Watsonville are lined with Victorian buildings, 1880s storefronts, and the Watsonville Plaza. Agricultural fields carpet the landscape of this scenic destination. The region s 14 state parks include California s oldest, Big Basin Redwoods State Park, encompassing 18,000 acres of forest, creeks, and waterfalls. On picturesque Natural Bridges State Beach, a sandstone arch rises from the sea. The coastline includes many other similarly scenic spots. The charming mountain towns of the Santa Cruz Mountains, is where you ll find Roaring Camp Railroads vintage steam locomotives set against an old growth redwood forest. The town of Davenport is where legendary Highway 1 hugs the rustic California ledge, overlooking windswept, solitary beaches. Santa Cruz County is 35 miles south of San Jose, 65 miles south of San Francisco, 40 miles north of Monterey and 375 miles north of Los Angeles. Nearly every session includes a guest speaker on to discuss an issue or a part of the business we as film liaisons need to know more about. This is especially evident at our summer meeting, which we ve dubbed our education summit. Topics have included issues relating to aviation, insurance, social media marketing, and fire safety. Perhaps our greatest strength is the collective knowledge of our members. All FLICS members have access via , and can ask any question of the membership at any time. It is often this forum that provides the most timely and useful information. Our network and our training-- along with guidance from the California Film Commission-- means our clients can expect quality, timely service in both small towns and big cities. We hope that you will continue to look to California first for all your filming needs.
