The truck show season has begun and there are many great events coming up to attend. It seems of late that fuel prices have declined a bit and I hope that is a sign of lower prices in the future so that we can afford to get out and participate in some of the shows and get-togethers. On the last Sunday in April, our chapter held a spring meeting at John Vannatta s garage in Leonardtown, MD. If you have , you probably received Carolyn Vannatta s message about the wonderful turnout of members. This is a great sign and as always, I encourage all of our members to come out and participate and get involved in our chapter. One of the ongoing subjects that we discuss at each meeting lately is the issue of our chapter hosting our own truck show. To be able to do this it will take a lot of effort and a full contingent of members. As of this meeting, we have one possible location that we are exploring to put on a show. Our next scheduled meeting will be hosted by my wife Jennifer and I at our home in Dayton, Maryland in August. Hopefully by that time we will have more positive information on this possible site, so come spend the day at our home and attend the meeting. With my 1959 GMC road tractor to register with the MVA (hopefully) in the near future, I would be remiss in not taking the opportunity to thank again all those involved in getting the changes made in regards to antique truck tags in Maryland. A very grateful thank you to Louis Campion, Mel Fair, John Vannatta, Dick Schafer, Dale Croston and all of our Maryland Representatives. This was a tremendous undertaking and we are very thankful for all your efforts on our behalf. The National Convention and Show is just around the corner and there is added excitement this year as John Vannatta will become our ATHS National President. I don t know anyone more worthy and qualified to hold this title. Congratulations John, we are proud of you. I hope to see you all at one of the events coming up so get your rigs polished up and come on out! Hope to see you soon, Bill

The car show benefits the Hospice of Southern Maryland, and has raised quite a bit of money. Minutes...The minutes of the January 15, 2012 meeting were approved as printed in the January-April DRIVELINE. Motion by Henry Fowler, Second Kathy Reeder. Treasurer s Report...Kathy Reeder presented the Treasurer s report to the members. A motion to accept by Mike Boteler, Second by Bruce Geil. Membership Report... Carolyn Vannatta reported that we currently have 91 members in the B-W Chapter. She reminded those present that to belong to the B-W Chapter, you must also be a current member of ATHS National. She handed out a membership roster for B-W Chapter members and asked for approval or corrections. The column on the left side of the roster indicates the ending year when a current members dues expire. Motion to approve, Mike Boteler, Second by Mel Thomas. ATHS National Neon Sign News from the National office, John Vannatta reported that the Consolidated Freightways neon sign from theyork, PA site is now in a Kansas City neon restoration shop. ATHS will be soliciting contributions to go toward the restoration of the sign. An artists concept of what the sign will look like when erected at National headquarters, was passed around to the members at the chapter meeting. Forums and new Website... The forums have been revised and moved onto the ATHS server. As the archives become available, the ability to search the forum postings and the archives will be quite helpful. All the Show Times and some of the Wheels of Time have been digitized and are available on the ATHS web. There is also a planned auction site. Right now it is quite difficult to find items for sale on ebay as there is no specific Antique Truck category. Convention Travel John Vannatta reported on the route that we probably will follow to West Springfield, MA. There will be a group of chapter members leaving on Sunday, May 27th and another group plans to leave early on Monday morning, May 28th. Convention Volunteers Carolyn Vannatta is collecting names of volunteers to staff positions at the Convention. Many of us have helped by registering trucks, parking trucks, assisted at the truck photo area, and directed traffic at past National shows. More Convention...Our Chapter will have a table at the convention to sell our ATHS truck mud flaps. Please make sure to help relieve our sales people on a regular basis so that everyone can enjoy the show. There will be other events taking place at the same time as our convention and show. A gun show and a rubber stamp show. More info is available at: Historic Highway Convoy...The Rt. 66 tour is set for Sept. 6-15, Information can be found on the ATHS website and details have been printed in the current Wheels of Time. The convoy/cruise will last 10 days with a show stop at 4 pm every evening. Other B-W Chapter Business Cruis in Southern Maryland... John Parlett, Jr. made a presentation regarding the first Southern Maryland Cruise, May 12, It is about a 100 mile cruise through Southern Maryland with four stops along the way. It provides a chance to drive those old cars with others, a change from the normal truck show. The cruise benefits and ends at the Maryland Veterans Home in Charlotte Hall, MD. Registration is $20.00 per vehicle. The website is at

3 PAGE 3 BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON DRIVELINE VOLUME 29 ISSUE 2 Club News continued Macungie ATCA Truck Show...B-W Chapter members who plan to attend the National ATCA show in Macungie, PA will convoy up on Thursday, June 14, Hotel info is the same as last year at Comfort Inn. Once again our Chapter is not doing a flea market this year. We will try and get our same parking area on the show grounds as last year. There is a new crew of ATCA folks running the show so there will be some changes made. BMI...A small group of B-W members arrived at the Baltimore Museum of Industry this past March 3rd to help clean and polish some of the antique trucks displayed there. They also placed the Electric Car on wheel stands. The Museum was holding their annual Bull & Oyster Roast fundraiser on this Saturday evening. (see photos below) Future Activities at BMI...Some discussion followed on when we might want to do something at the museum, perhaps as a replacement for the discontinued Parlett show in the Fall. We settled on an October date that will fit with everyone s schedule as a date to meet at BMI with our trucks (not a show). Mike Boteler will follow up with the BMI contact. Future B-W Chapter Truck Show...We will continue to explore locations and places where we can link up with another group to have a truck show. Chapter member George Hamlin had suggested the Professional Car Society meeting sometime in the summer. There is also a Howard County Farm Museum across the road from the Howard County Fairgrounds where we could have a show in conjunction with other activities. Antique Truck Legislation in Maryland...John Vannatta stated that Mel Fair is a past President of the Maryland Motor Truck Association (MMTA) and that Lou Campion, the MMTA representative are familiar with the halls of the Annapolis statehouse. Lou was instrumental in helping members of our hobby to draft the legislation that eventually passed. Dale Croston enlisted his legislative representative, Senator Nancy Jacobs and John Vannatta solicited the assistance of Delegate Johnny Woods from Southern Maryland as a co-sponsor. The antique truck legislation is passed and received the signature of the Governor. All trucks can be registered, how- ever the biggest provision is that all antique trucks must be insured as antiques and at least 25 years old. Cars and trucks up to 10,000 lbs. Remain at 20 years old. Governor Martin O Malley makes his signature on the Bill Summer Picnic... President Billy Marlow has again offered to host the Club s summer picnic at his home. Bring your trucks, but please no tractor trailer rigs. He claims we won t have rain this year!! John Milliman made a motion to hold the picnic at the Marlow s, seconded by Bruce Geil, motion approved. Sunday, August 19, 2012 with details to follow. Thanking our Legislators... Mel Thomas made a motion to provide an appropriate recognition to our legislators, Nancy Jacobs, Johnny Woods and Kelly Schulz who sponsored our Antique Truck Bill in the Maryland legislature. Motion seconded by John Milliman. Funding not to exceed $ John Milliman motioned to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Mike Boteler. Meeting adjourned at 2:10 pm.

4 PAGE 4 BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON DRIVELINE VOLUME 29 ISSUE 2 Regional Chapter News Bruce Geil ATHS Regional Vice President Ph or bruce_virginia@verizon.net Commentary on ATHS Chapters is from Dane Badman, editor of Baltimore-Washington DRIVELINE. Susquehanna Valley Chapter ATHS chapter member Carl Ellerman will be leading the Mother s Day parade convoy for the 4th year in a row. Carl earned this honor by raising $21, for the Make-a-Wish Foundation in Lancaster, PA. Carl is dedicated to raising money for the purpose of making wishes come true for children with life threatening illness. In the past 10 years he has raised over $120, Another chapter member, Paul Reinbold, will also be in the front row, starting in 21st position. Way to go guys!! The Chapter s 20th Annual truck show date has been set for August 25, 2012 at Kenworth of Pennsylvania in Carlisle. Marlin Ruhl will be heading the show committee. The late Bob Stimely s 1934 Ford Stake truck will be featured on this years dash plaque. Mason-Dixon Chapter ATHS held their 19th Annual Truck Show on Saturday, May 5, They sponsored a canned food drive for the Frederick Food Bank by requesting attendees to bring two or more canned food goods to the show. The partly sunny day drew over 90 registered trucks to the parking lot at Central Maryland International Truck. Food concession for breakfast and lunch was provided by members of the Central Maryland Tractor Club. Attendees of the 19th Annual Mason-Dixon Antique Truck show enjoyed a wide variety of old and new trucks on display. Shenandoah Valley ATHS...will be holding their Annual Truck and Antique Tractor show from 9 AM-4 PM on May 19, 2012 at the Bridgewater Lawn Party grounds in Bridgewater, VA. BBQ chicken will be available. The club is asking members to contact new or past supporters of the show who may be willing to supply door prizes or donations for the show. Also, remember to patronize the supporters of the show. The chapter is looking for an individual to relieve Glenn Martin in the position of Treasurer. If interested, please contact Scott Shifflett. The Tri-State committee is also seeking persons interested in taking the position of President & Treasurer for a two year term beginning after this years show in September. Please contact Scott Shifflett for either of these offices. Missing Maryland State Flag...Baltimore-Washington ATHS Chapter is looking for information on the whereabouts of the chapter s Maryland State Flag. If you have borrowed it for an event, parade or other function, please contact President Bill Marlow or John Vannatta. We would like to have it for the trip to the National Convention & Show. Thank You

5 PAGE 5 BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON DRIVELINE VOLUME 29 ISSUE 2 News from National Headquarters John Vannatta ATHS National President (301) or vannatta@md.metrocast.net The annual Spring Board of Directors Meeting was held in Kansas City on March 3, The biggest change to report on was that this was the first time that all of the meetings for the entire weekend were held within the Headquarters building. Meetings in the past have been held in a hotel nearby. Recent reorganization of the building makes this possible and saves the society money on meeting room rental. Probably the biggest news at the moment is the new website for the Society. Although it looks like a simple change of face, it is actually much more capable and has the ability to be maintained and updated in house saving significant money and time. This is the tip of the iceberg with more changes incorporated as we go forward. Check it out and see what you think. It has a clean, fresh and simplified look. The other news is the progress on the C-F Sign Project. If you have received a renewal notice lately, you will see an opportunity to contribute to the project. The sign is presently located at a sign shop in KC which specializes in the lost art of neon signs. With a resident glass blower they are busy restoring the old sign to its former glory. With the progress they are making, it could be erected by late summer. The only other significant event was the briefing by KC architect Mike Jantsch as to the concept plan for the HQ renovation project. Plans are in the early stages and on hold while we determine feasibility and funding possibilities. Committee reports included a report on Society Awards. There is a move afoot to change the awards forms to make it easier to submit someone for an award. At present, it is left up to the person submitting the award to amass the necessary information in essay format. We are looking at a form where you could fill in the blanks to answer the questions. The Financial report was positive and it looks as though the loss of members due to economic situations may be slowing or even slightly reversed. The Archives Project, in its initial stages attempting to digitize a portion of the library, is having difficulty. A decision was made to solicit outside help in advising us as to cataloging and associating data to the photographs and drawings. Headquarters will approach a local university with a Library Science degree program to see if there is assistance available to help us determine priorities. The IT committee discussed the new website, forum and the upcoming auction portal which will greatly expand the auction capability of the society online. Standby for more information on this project. It was reported that the first electronic edition of the WOT was made available on February 1, 2012 and will continue to be available one month after the issue is mailed. HQ is also busy scanning all back issues of Showtime and Wheels of Time to be available on the website as well. As part of the society s long range planning, we have hired a Strategic Planner, also an ATHS member from North Carolina to provide us with planning assistance. He is an expert on fund raising, grants and such which promises to be an asset to us. All future conventions are on track and the Massachusetts event this year looks like a good one. Registrations are on track and the Convention/Show is coming up quickly. Planning for the Route 66 Old Truck Convoy is also moving along. T/A Truck Stops has appropriated $30,000 towards the event. The 10 day trip will begin in Morris, IL on September 6th and proceed to San Bernadino, CA to arrive on September 15th. This is a huge undertaking but should prove to be a once in a lifetime event. The next BOD meeting will occur in West Springfield in May.
