DAYBORO TRAILRIDERS CLUB INC PO BOX128, DAYBORO QLD 4521 ABN: Vice President Secretary Treasurer Bob Ebert Lisa Schuhmann Julie Stephenson Newsletter June 2017 May Ride Report by Debra Shanahan On Sunday 21 st May the morning began with a thick fog enveloping Dayboro. With a chill in the air, one wonders why anyone would crawl from under a nice warm doona at daybreak to get a horse and gear ready for a Trail Ride. Given that only eight riders turned up for our ride, I m guessing a few had that very same thought. What a shame so many missed out on another amazing ride. By the time we signed on and saddled up, the blanket of grey had lifted and we rode out of the Showground under a perfect blue sky. Our Trail Ride took us up the Big Mountain in Hanson Quarry land. Thanks to the new property owner on Fingerboard Road (Alex Bell) we were still able to access one of our most scenic trails. After the recent rain the tall timber had an abundance of birds singing their bush songs. Twitchers would have been in their element, but on horseback there is no time for bird watching. The usual outcome from looking up into the trees trying to spot birds, is your head caught in a low hanging branch or collecting an eight legged hitchhiker on the brim of your hat. We had some newbies on the ride (horses not people). Janelle was riding a new horse that she had acquired only the week before and bravely took on the job of Tail Drover, closing all the gates and her young horse managed like a pro. As Lead Drover, Bob has the task of opening most of the gates and finding the best route to take, but was multi-tasking and leading his young horse alongside Rocky so he could show him how it s done. After our first big climb, and not the slightest breeze to cool them, steam was rising from all the horses. At the top of the ridge, where the ride usually becomes easier, the going got a bit harder for our buddies as their feet sunk into the mud on the newly dozed trail. Making our way down to the creek gave our mounts a bit of a rest before another big climb to reach Mountain View Road at Ocean View. We then had some easy riding to Grandview Drive and into Lyn Tait s property. The view from the Air Strip never ceases to amaze, prompting riders to pull out their cameras or phones to capture the scenery. In one direction, magnificent Moreton Bay glistened in the sun and in the other, with peaks in a shroud of mist, the D Aguilar Ranges in all their glory.

Entering the Quarry Land again for our homeward journey, we once again followed the track that we were bogging down in earlier, but a couple of hours of sunshine had dried it out considerably. We took the shorter route off the mountain to Rod Small s place. The steep and very rocky track that could be quite challenging for some, was negotiated with ease by our sure footed horses. After approximately four hours we were back at the Club house relaxing and enjoying lunch. And a few words from Mary Ann The May ride was done a week early due to the Dayboro Day Parade being on the fourth weekend. Eight of us did the May ride on a lovely sunny day, we left the showground, went under the bridge and along Fingerboard Road into a property. We then went up the mountain into Hanson s Quarry country, where spectacular views and beautiful cattle were highlights of the ride. On the way home, we came across a very attractive letter box see below. Having only a small group, possibly due to changing our ride date, we travelled well together. Only one mishap was Bob s lead horse breaking its halter, Bob was save by Debra who handed over her halter so he didn t have to make-do with a broken halter. Thanks to Lisa for supplying ham steaks & pineapple for lunch, a nice change from a sausage sizzle. Also, thanks to Bob for doing the cooking.

Bunnings Sausage Sizzles We have had a few questions lately as to why we need to keep doing Bunnings sausage sizzles. We have some annual bills to pay:- Monthly fee to Show Society to have shed on their grounds and power. Donation to show society as part of our annual fee. We also donate a percentage of any profit made on the showgrounds as part of our lease agreement. Shed & contents insurance. TRA affiliation fee. Post office box in Dayboro. Simple web hosting (for website). Domaine Name (for website). Christmas party prizes, decorations and snack food. Bottle of scotch for our books auditor. Mobile phone. Horse Home Show Tickets. Of the $65 adult membership fee that you pay, $50.00 goes to TRA for Public liability insurance so we only get to keep $15.00 We used to have other big fundraisers each year such as the Team Penning at the Dayboro Show but we no longer do this. The Big October Ride also used to raise us a reasonable amount of money but with the smaller numbers of riders we now get we still make a profit but not a huge amount. Our Bunnings sausage sizzles are what has replaced these fundraisers and are a reasonably easy way of making money. Most of the time we are allocated Friday sausage sizzles which raise $250 - $350. This is not a huge amount but if we do them regularly they do add up. We seem to only get one or two Saturdays per year if we are lucky which raise a much larger profit. We do also make a small amount of profit from the Rodeo sausage sizzle stand and this year for the first time have been asked to help with the gates at the July show. We also purchase new equipment every now and again and this year we purchased:- The new upright Freezer. Twenty new plastic chairs. Portable Gazebo. Small items cutting board, sharp knife, plastic containers etc We have ongoing maintenance, some being done at the moment:- Hinges for cupboards. Repair of dripping tap. Metal strips to stop flooding. Extra keys cut for post office box. Repair of our awning out the front. Gas for our BBQ. Mouse baits. Walkie talkie/radio repairs. Embroidery on saddle cloth covers for parades. Stationery. Printing costs for membership forms, waivers, Health Dec s etc.

In the recent past some things we have contributed to or bought:- Our new amenities block. The showgrounds fence. The rodeo arena. The big drinks fridge. Second hand filing cabinet. Paint for all the showground toilets. Saddle cloth covers and scarves. Sign at the Showgrounds entrance. Fluoro vests. We also need to keep money in reserve in case we are asked to contribute to things around the showgrounds. There will be major renovations happening at the showgrounds over the next five years which the Show Society has received a grant for but they may need us to contribute to some things. We only charge $8 per ride including lunch. Most rides this covers the cost of lunch with some profit but the May ride we only had 8 riders so the food cost much more than money taken. This is okay though as our club profit can cover this to allow members to enjoy a nice lunch. We also have non-food items to purchase for our lunches such as plates, cutlery, serviettes, washing up liquid, paper towels, gladwrap, alfoil, garbage bags, hand wash etc. I didn t apply for any sausage sizzles in April and May to give members a break but we have gone into the draw for another one in the next couple of months. We have to keep putting our name in the draw as we don t necessarily get allocated one each month. If we pick and choose when we do them too often they will stop allocating them to us. There are probably other things that I haven t thought of and I haven t included things that are not recent but I hope it gives you an idea about why we fundraise and need to do Bunnings regularly. It does take more money to run the club than what members quite often are aware of. Thanks, Lisa.

Gemma in Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, Iceland, Azerbaijan and Georgia The next part of Gem s travels started in Minsk, Belarus where she was really questioned by the airline flying her in as they don t have many western tourists going there. After a dodgy ride from the airport she made it to her cute little hostel. She really liked Minsk where she said the centre is very communist but once off the main street she felt like she was in Australia. She said it tripped her out and she has never had that feeling in any city before. It was a great city to walk around and next to no tourists. She was very lucky to see the Belarus performers from Eurovision walk past her and then also saw a Coca-Cola ad being filmed. Next she flew to Vilnius, Lithuania, did a walking tour and watched some fascinating drone races all day. After this was a bus to Riga, Latvia which she said was a very small city and did another walking tour and lots of sightseeing. She also managed to fit in three movies here which were in English with Latvian/Russian subtitles. She did have a good laugh when she saw some Latvians drinking a strange mix of ice tea and Jim Beam on their rooftops. A couple of flights later via Helsinki and she was in Iceland. She spent a night in a hostel where she did some sewing repairs to her faithful backpack which got ripped on the flight after doing many travels with her. Since her first trip to New Zealand it has never left her side apart from the one time it decided to take a week s holiday in Rome without her till they were happily reunited in Croatia. Anyway back to this trip she did a nice coast walk out to the lighthouse even though couldn t get right up to it as was the wrong time of year with birds nesting. Next day was the start of a ten day bus tour where she paired up with a girl from Perth of her age. She really loved Iceland and sent so many pictures home of waterfalls, canyons, volcanoes, rainbows and icebergs - amazing!!! She was very excited to go to the town where the SBS TV series Trapped was filmed. It would be very unusual for her to go on a holiday and not discover a film site somewhere. This time she flew to Baku, Azerbaijan via Berlin with one night to herself before a ten day tour of Azerbaijan and Georgia. She was very excited when her airport taxi driver took her along the road where the Formula 1 Grand Prix was being held the next weekend. They went up to the Caucasus Mountains and did some yoghurt tasting then stayed in a cute old village called Lahic with just one street. Then it was time for a border crossing into Georgia where they did a very long, steep walk up to a monastery with great views. Gem tasted what she described as trail mix on a string being walnuts covered in a grape syrup. She had a day to explore Tbilisi where she witnessed some crazy carpet buying skills. Then three flights later from Georgia to Turkey to Hong Kong where their plane got stuck on the tarmac for a couple of hours while engineers fixed their broken air conditioning, she finally arrived very tired in Brisbane with lots of stories to tell. Over the two months Gem was away she visited nine countries and had fourteen flights using nine different airlines being Qantas, Turkish Airlines, Air Moldova, Ukraine International Airlines, Belavia, Nordic Regional Airlines, Finnair, Air Berlin and Azerbaijan Airlines. Amazing!!! - By Lisa.

And some thoughts that Gemma posted on Facebook:- In May 2011, I watched the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time. Azerbaijan won. A country I had no idea how to pronounce, let alone know where it was. If I told my 17 year old self that in 6 years time I would be in that very country, I wouldn t have believed it. I clearly remember sitting in English class thinking to myself I have to go to Eurovision at some point in my life. Since I had that tiny little innocent thought, I have been to 4 Eurovision Contests and over 40 countries across 5 continents! Border between Azerbaijan and Georgia Gem s flight from Berlin into Baku. * * * * * *
