The crew gathered at Burradoo, and yet again there was a new car to capture everyone s attention a Lotus Excel. Glenn and Millie Atkinson s Lotus Excel SE.
Page 2 of 22 A mix of ages and types to inspect. From woodies to German sports cars. Three British classics and a reproduction of a fourth. Quintessentially British.
Page 3 of 22 Run regulars. At this point, I wondered whether somehow I was having an influence on the new machines we see coming into the club. Some time ago in the BEACon I opined that the club should have more Italian cars in the mix, and lo and behold, a couple promptly turned up, with a couple more promised. Then in February this year I noted that one marque missing from our line-up was Lotus (though I thought then that the Elan was the most likely possibility), and now there was this Excel with its wing and wheels making it look more exotic than any other Excel I have ever seen. I m now pondering what I should wish for next in the way of club vehicles! MGB GT and Austin 1800 in McVitty Grove car park. Photos by Rob Turner Anyway, back to the acting (sorry, action)! After a nice drive through some of the best countryside in the Highlands, we duly arrived at McVitty Grove, where we occupied most of their restaurant and Lana and her crew could set about providing for us. A lovely view! And our lovely hostess Lana.
Page 4 of 22 Once again I immortalise the back of Peter Carpenter s head in a photograph! The food was of the expected quality and complimented by their range of beautiful local wines. The mains were great.....and so were the desserts. My green frog jelly and ice-cream.
Page 5 of 22 The only worry for me all day was to do with the dessert selection. I had my eye on the kid s dessert Green Frog Jelly and Ice-cream. As it happened, so did our Secretary Tom Currie (who we know is really a big kid). He ordered one and the surprised waitress said laughingly that it was something for 9 year olds, whereupon Tom says But I m only 8 (that sort of quick thinking is why he s Secretary). He got his, but it was the second last one they had. In a panic, I prevailed on Lana to get me one, which she did, bless her. As it was, Tom then noted in mock seriousness that the three jelly frogs around the edge of the plate were red ones, rather than green (another reason why he s Secretary). All in all, a most enjoyable day! Phil O Eling Forest Winery 16/04/2018 These days, it is with a certain sense of anticipation that I set off to Burradoo to commence another BEAC outing. Apart from the pleasure of good companions, there is also the pleasure of viewing the eclectic mix of vehicles that turn up. And this run to the ever popular Eling Forest Winery was no exception, as the following photos will attest. Newest attraction was a Lancia Gamma Coupe a rare beastie indeed in Australia. Also notable was the return of the Honda NSX, the German contingent of Porsches and Mercedes, the Georges Jaguar back again and the line-up of MGBs of all types and colours. Where else would you find a GTV6, and NSX and a Sunbeam Tiger rubbing shoulders?
Page 6 of 22 The Mini lurks behind MGB GTs. A potential member stopped to check us out nice one! During the morning two potential members stopped to check us out. The first was a young man in an impossible to miss Ferrari California (2010 model I think). We referred both enquirers to our website. A new attraction in the line-up a Lancia Gamma Coupe.
Page 7 of 22 Red rules! Always a pleasure to see the Georges Jag.
Page 8 of 22 Three fine British sporties in a row. Some German excellence Porsche and Mercedes. A gentleman s express Porsche 928.
Page 9 of 22 The wonderful simplicity of the bug-eye Sprite. Five MGs in a row! The MG ZT certainly looks the business!
Page 10 of 22 A nice drive though the countryside ensued, including an interesting tour of some Exeter back streets not so often seen. A short stint on the motorway brought us to the scenic grounds of the winery. A last minute hitch in the arrangements saw us unable to occupy the function centre seen in the photo below, but as it turned out, we fitted comfortably into the café. Food was quickly forthcoming, the pies proving very popular (at our table anyway). The buzz of conversation indicated that everyone was relaxed and happy, which is the aim that every BEAC outing seeks to achieve.
Page 11 of 22 Thanks to Tom and Joan Currie for organising the run for us. On the way home afterwards, Jenny and I stopped in Harby Street Bowral to take a photo of the most spectacular display of Southern Highlands autumn colour that we have seen so far. A fitting end to a great day! Phil O Mt Annan Botanic Gardens 30/05/2018 Rob and Fay McCarthy put a lot of planning into a long (2 hours) and complex, but very rewarding drive to get to Mt Annan, via Colo Vale, Thirlmere, Oakdale, The Oaks, Cobbity and Narellan. The roads often ran along the ridges south west of Sydney and afforded some great views along the way. The main attraction at Burradoo was the fabulous Mercedes 300SL of the young intending member who stopped his Ferrari to check us out at the start of our last run. But sadly the Merc has been sold, and was to be picked up later in the day. Ah well
Page 12 of 22 These two look great together. Old favourites! The classic Magnette.
Page 13 of 22 A timeless beauty Mercedes 300SL. Older and newer British sporty cars. Merc passes Merc. Liven up the Gardens car park! The Melaleuca House café/restaurant within the Gardens was somewhat of a (pleasant) surprise to me. In previous visits there, Jenny and I had always sat outside, and I didn t realise that they had enough space inside to accommodate our numbers. The menu offered some tempting choices and the food itself was very good indeed from what I saw and heard. The volume of conversation and laughter being heard all around indicated that our members were really enjoying themselves and the occasion. Thanks Rob and Fay good one! Phil O
Page 14 of 22 Noted Whilst Out and About On the 14 th of May, the BEAC Committee had a meeting at the Courtyard Café in Berrima. We found ourselves seated next to a large table for over 20 people. When those people came in, some of them were known to us, but I still thought it was a community group of some sort. When we finished our meeting and went back to the car park however, the penny dropped. In the car park (and as it turned out, in the main street) were some cars that would look at home in a BEAC line-up. Parked next to Bob Payne s Stag was a gorgeous little Morgan wearing a Vintage Sports Car Club badge. We guessed it was of 1930s origin, noting things like the two different sized spare wheels it carried at the back (front and rear wheel sizes are different). Research later at home indicated it was a Morgan 4-4, Morgan s first 4 wheeled car, manufactured from 1936 onward. Later still, I found out its restoration was completed only a month or two ago. What a little gem!
Page 15 of 22 Members Please Note If you have not yet got your BEAC membership card from our Treasurer Fred Edney, please remember to see him before the start of one of our runs to obtain it. Ken and Wendy s Big Lap Got the following message in from club member Ken Davis: Reporting from Albany WA on our big lap. Seen a few old VW s along the way, passed the Buick mob on their day out and spied quite a few Rollers and Bently s heading for a gathering but the treat yesterday was encountering a Dutch group with their T Model Ford and support Land Rover who are on a world tour. They already have toured the US, South America, Africa, Russia and Europe and are currently touring Australia. ( has their story - Ed.). GREETINGS FROM ALBANY 9 MAY 2018
Page 16 of 22 One month into our big lap and here we are at Albany WA. Only problem to date has been a flat battery that was quickly replaced in Ceduna SA. Lucky the battery did not expire one day later for we would have been stranded at a Nullarbor roadhouse. Coming into Albany we encountered a severe dust storm that reduced visibility to such an extent that we came to a stop on the highway for short periods of time until the visibility improved. It was the most challenging day of driving that I have ever experienced. Yesterday at our camp site in Albany was a T model Ford on a world tour, yes WORLD tour. The pictures tell the story. Regards Ken and Wendy Davis

The festival features 100 cars, 200 bikes and 9 bands and has themes of retro, custom and rockabilly running through it. It has an amazing atmosphere and draws huge crowds to the blocked off village streets. Photos: Jenny O Thank you to all contributors to this edition.
