In 1846, when Elizabeth Bickell was dismissed for entertaining friends in the Duke's private rooms, Mary Hastie (then working at Devonshire House) was brought in to replace Bickell as housekeeper. Mary asked the Duke if Phoebe could join her as assistant housekeeper for 20 a year. The Duke allowed Phoebe to move back to Chatsworth but refused to pay her a housekeeper's salary- therefore, the two women shared a housekeeper's salary until the Duke's death in 1858, when they moved together to Denbigh Street in Pimlico. Dined in Steward's Room during Duke's visit, 1852 and called 'Mrs Radley'. He travelled abroad with both the 6th Duke and with Louisa Cavendish. Santi had a weakness for gambling, and in 1836 he wrote to the Duke admitting to having stolen some of the housekeeping money to feed his habit. He told the Duke he intended to commit suicide, and that it was the fault of Meynell (the valet) and Ridgway (the steward). The Duke paid off Santi's gambling debts but was forced to dismiss him two years later, in 1838, probably again for gambling. Despite his dismissal, Paul Santi and his daughter Louise were paid generous pensions for many years after his employment.
