He worked as a foreman in the gardens at Chatsworth, probably in the arboretum department. In 1838 when Paxton went on an extended journey abroad with the 6th Duke, and then Andrew Stewart left for Paris, he was temporarily put in charge of the gardens. A little is about Bailey from the letters written between Joseph and Sarah Paxton, who did not approve of his conduct. Bailey appears to suffered for several years from alcoholism. In 1839, Sarah wrote that she suspected Bailey was seeing one of the local girls, Hannah Milner, in the character of a lover. Sarah s suspicions were correct. In 1841 Thomas Bailey married Hannah Milner at Edensor, and the Paxtons were witnesses. Unfortunately, the marriage does not appear to have put an end to Bailey s drinking, which was worsened on the death of his mother. Thomas Bailey died, possibly as a result of complications from his alcoholism, in 1846 while only in Page 8 of 121
