Dear friends from home and abroad, I m very pleased to invite you to join us in the 2013 International Highway Technology Summit which will be held from April 16th to 18th, 2013 in Beijing, China. Since the 1st China Highway Technology Summit held in May 2002, the summit has been successfully held for five times domestically so far biennially and proved to be the largest, highest and most influential academic exchange activity in Chinese highway transportation field. In order to promote international exchange of highway and transportation technology, China Highway & Transportation Society is honored to have TRB and IRF as co-sponsor organizations, to co-organize the 6th China Highway Technology Summit in Beijing in April 2013, which is also announced as 2013 International Highway Technology Summit (IHTS) in international scale. In order to provide more convenient and fruitful exchange, all presentations and communications of the Summit will be translated simultaneously or consecutively. The Summit will be very integrated covering almost all aspects of highway technology, and focus on innovative approaches and best practices in highway engineering, bridge and tunnel structures, traffic safety, maintenance and operation, informationization as well as environment and sustainability. All papers and presentations related to every part of highway & transportation, especially the innovative solutions and new technology are welcome for the Summit. Joining in the Summit, you will discover innovative solutions that work for you and your organization, meet and greet new and old friends, and broaden your connection especially with China. Industry leaders, practitioners, and researchers will get together to talk about their experiences in technology, materials, practices and solutions across the globe. This summit will offer many opportunities to exchange creative ideas and solutions among the colleagues from China and all over the world. We will offer various events including technical tours, guest tours, study tours and social events that will allow you to explore other facets of the ancient but inspirational country, China. 6 Call for Abstracts Theme: innovative approaches and best practices. The SUMMIT proceedings will be published before its open. We sincerely calling for the papers especially the innovative applications in the past two years will be considered. Only the papers that have not been released before will be accepted. The papers will be welcome to cover all innovative solutions and practice in every aspect of highway, including but not limited to the following topics of comprehensive topics, Highway design and construction, Bridge and Tunnel Structure Engineering, Machinery and equipments for highway construction and maintenance, Transport informationization, Highway finance, operation and management, Environment and Sustainability, etc. The conference is currently accepting abstracts for consideration of papers to be submitted for inclusion in the SUMMIT. If the abstract is accepted, the author will be invited to prepare a paper that will be subsequently reviewed, and if accepted, will be included in the conference proceedings. Abstract deadline: Sep.15, 2012, no more than 500 words in English which is the official language for the conference. 7 Technical Tour 1) Beijing Badaling (G6) Expressway to Great Wall: Beijing Badaling (G6) expressway is a high speed channel from Beijing to Badaling scenery area, Hebei, Shanxi and inner Mongolia provinces, it s the longest and most efficient travelling route of Beijing. The road is a part of expressway of G6 from Beijing to Tibet, and has been renamed to Jing-Zang Expressway. 2) Testing Facility of Research Institute of Highway, MOT To explore various demo roads, equipments, expressway toll and operation system, vehicle lab, traffic safety lab, bridge structure lab and crash demo test of Research Institute of Resarch,MOT. 3) Beijing Highway Development Corporation Beijing Highway Development Corporation was established in September It takes charge of expressway construction, operation, investment and finance and related industry of Beijing. 8 Guest Tour * The Imperial Palace The Imperial Palace in the center of Beijing is historically and artistically one of the most comprehensive museums in China, and used as its foundation of the Forbidden City, a palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties ( ), and their collection of treasures. * the Great Wall The Great Wall is a symbol of Chinese civilization, and one of the wonders that the Chinese people have created. Badaling Great Wall, the most representative part, was promoted as a key national cultural relic, protected under the approval of the State Council in In 1988, it was enlisted in the World Cultural Heritage Directory by UNESCO. * Temple of Heaven The Temple of Heaven is a worthwhile visiting place in Beijing. It is much bigger than the Forbidden City and smaller than the Summer Palace with an area of about 2,700,000 square meters. The Temple was built in 1420 A.D. during the Ming Dynasty to offer sacrifice to Heaven. *Bird s nest Located in the Olympic Green, the US$423 million stadium is the world s largest steel structure. The design was awarded to a submission from the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron in April 2003, after a bidding process that included 13 final submissions. *The Water Cube The National Aquatics Centre, also known as The Water Cube is one of the most dramatic and exciting venues to host sporting events for the Beijing Olympics in

10 Study Tour 1 The Hangzhou Bay Bridge The Hangzhou Bay Bridge is locatied in East China s Zhejiang province,and connects the two cities of Jiaxing and Ningbo.Its 36km total length makes in the longest sea-crossing bridge in the world After its completion in May 2008,it reduced the distance between Shanghai Ningbo 120km. 2 The Xihoumen Bridge 2010 IBC Award Winners The Xihoumen Bridge is a major part of the Zhoushan Mainland and Islands Connection Project.which connects the city of Ningbo and Zhoushan Archipelago.The main bridge is a steel box-girder suspension bridge with a world-record span of 1,650m.It will be completed by October Taizhou Yangtze River Bridge Taizhou Yangtze River Bridge kilometers in length, across the board with two-way six-lane expresswaystandard. The total investment of the project reaches 9.37 billion yuan, with theconstruction period of five years. Crossing the river, the main span is 2 x1080 m. It was also the first suspension bridge to have three towers and twospans in the world. 4 Sutong Bridge 2008 IBC Award Winners Sutong Bridge is located between the eastern Jiangsu Province, Nantong and Suzhou City, 82 kilometers east of Jiangyin Bridge, 108 km east of the estuary of the Yangtze River, the route length of 32.4 km, mainly by the Cross River Bridge and South, three parts of the north shore of wiring. Cross River Bridge is 8146 meters long and about 15.1 kilometers of the North terminal, south terminal is about 9.2 km. Nanjing is a city with a prominent place in Chinese history and culture As a popular tourist destination the city is often cited as having a unique charm. It offers a number of cultural sites and pleasant natural surroundings,such as the Chaotian Palace Fuzi Miao Qinhuai River and the Sun Yat-Sen Mauso-leum and its surrounding area. 10
