2 Wool Market Report March 13th 2017 AUSTRALIA Demand pushes market to new heights to just above 75 US cents. The shift was driven by a strengthening of the US dollar caused by the news that the US Federal Reserve is set to raise interest rates next week. However, the Australian dollar remains higher against the US dollar than it was at the end of December. Sales were held this week in Melbourne only on Tuesday March 7, and at all three selling centres on Wednesday March 8 and Thursday March 9. On Tuesday the EMI was up 7 cents to 1,507 n cents, but in US dollar terms was down 2 cents to 1,146 US cents. On Wednesday the EMI climbed by 8 cents to 1,515 cents, and in US dollar terms lifted by 5 cents to 1,151 US cents. On Thursday the EMI was up 7 cents to 1,522 cents but in US dollar terms dropped back by 6 cents to 1,145 US cents. After rises across all wool types last week, it was the Merino wool fleeces at the finer end that drove the market this week. Generally speaking, the finer the micron, the bigger the rise microns rose by 3.7%, 17 microns lifted 2.8%, 17.5 microns climbed 2.9%, and microns were up 2%. The average Micron Price Guides (MPG)s for Merino wools between 18.5 and 20 microns all reached their highest levels under the current selling system. However, there were falls of 0.3% for 21 microns and 0.6% for 22 microns. The Australian wool market continued to move into uncharted territory this week despite a higher national offering. The Australian Wool Exchange (AWEX) Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) lifted by 22 cents (1.5%) for the week to close on 1,522 cents per kilo clean on Thursday March 9. In US dollar terms, the market fell marginally, losing 3 cents (0.3%) to close on 1,145 US cents. The increase in prices for superfine wool and the decline in the broader types saw the difference between the average MPG for 16.5 and 22 microns reach 808 cents in the North and 817 cents in the South. Crossbreds continued their recent resurgence, with a fourth successive week of increases. The rises ranged between 1.7% and 4.8%, with the coarsest types seeing the biggest lifts. The EMI and all three regional indicators reached new all-time highs. The AWEX Merino Cardings Index was up 19 cents (1.7%) to 1,235 cents another new all-time high. The market was assisted somewhat by a decline in the Australian dollar against the US dollar, as it fell by 1.3% Skirtings also followed the fleece wools upwards, and oddments performed strongly overall. 2
3 Wool Market Report March 13th 2017 This week s offering was 45,999 bales, significantly higher than last week s 40,626 bales. The clearance rate this week was 94%, down from 97% last week. China was the dominant presence in the auction room, with competition from Europe and India. Analysts said that the market continues to be driven by strong demand throughout the pipeline, together with an anticipated shortage of supply. In addition, some Chinese buyers who had held off making purchases over recent weeks, in the anticipation that the market would fall back, were more active this week, helping push the market up further. Looking ahead, observers said that few in the trade are expecting the increase in the EMI to stop soon, with demand remaining high. Next week s offering is forecast to be 43,731 bales, with 42,400 bales the following week and 41,116 bales the week after that. NEW ZEALAND All types up with 88% clearance A weakening New Zealand dollar and steady off-shore buying interest saw all wool types improve for the South Island offering of 5,300 bales, with 88% selling. SOUTH AFRICA Market 0.5% lower The weighted indicator for the main trading currency came down 3.08% compared to the last sale on March 3. Compared to the last time sold on March 3, fine crossbred full fleece was 4-6% dearer with early shorn and second shears 10-12% stronger. Good colour coarse crossbred full fleece was 5% stronger with poorer styles improving by 10-12%. Longer shears were 3-7% dearer and shorter shears increased by 5%. Combing oddments were 3-9% firmer with clothing oddments increasing by 7-12%. There was strong competition with China principal, supported by Western Europe, Australasia, the Middle East and India. Source: Wool Services International The wool market was unchanged at this week s auction and the Cape Wools Merino Indicator decreased slightly by 0.5% and by 84 points to close at a value of R (Clean). The Cape Wools All Wool Indicator lost 0.9%. The wool market maintained its good performance to end unchanged. The finer wool is still in high demand and good prices were achieved. In the mid micron groups demand was muted and prices fluctuated more readily. There was good competition between buyers mainly as a result of the smaller offering. Modiano impressed by again purchasing substantially more wool compared to its closest rival for the second week running. 3
4 Wool Market Report March 13th 2017 some excellent individual clips. Despite pressure from a consistently stronger currency, the market held up well, with the average market indicator closing marginally down by 1% on R All buying houses participated actively in the sale, with both kids and young goats remaining stable, although comparison with the previous sale was not possible due to there being no summer market indicator on the first sale. This week saw the Rand at R12.99 to the US Dollar. The Rand was 0.6% stronger against the US Dollar compared with the average rate at the previous sale. The Rand was 2% weaker against the Euro, trading at R The strong adult market closed 1% higher, even under difficult trading conditions and taking into account the stronger rand. A highest price of R per kg was paid for a bale of super style 26 micron kid hair. The offering comprised 8,210 bales of which 98.1% was sold. Major traders were Modiano (2,643 bales), Lempriere SA (1,903), Standard Wool SA (1,772) and Stucken & Co (1,009). The average clean prices for the selection within the different micron categories for good topmaking (MF5), long fleeces were as follows: 18 microns gained 1.7% to close at R201.04/kg; 18.5 microns decreased 0.3% to close at R197.09/ kg; 19 microns gained 0.6% to close at R184.79/ kg; 19.5 microns decreased 1.8% to close at R170.00/kg; 20 microns decreased 0.9% to close at R156.80/kg; 20.5 microns moved down 1.2% to close at R147.79/kg; 21 microns weakened 0.2% to close at R145.83/kg; 21.5 microns decreased 0.1% to close at R143.27/kg; 22 microns lost 1% to close at R141.50/kg; and 22.5 microns increased 0.1% to close at R143.03/kg. Source: Cape Wools Mohair Market holds up despite stronger Rand The second sale of the 2017 summer season took place on March 7, with 141,012 kg on offer. The offering consisted of good quality mohair with Compared to the previous sale, prices were as follows: Kids (summer) not quoted; Young Goats (summer) not quoted; Fine Adults down 1%; Strong Adults up 1%; Average down 1%. Source: Mohair SA UNITED KINGDOM Prices increase amid strong competition The fourteenth sale of the 2016/17 season was held on March 7 and offered 2,281,263 kg. A large offering comprising a wider selection of grades produced strong competition, resulting in prices increasing. There was a 98% clearance. Compared to the last time sold: Fine types: 7-15% dearer. Medium types: 6-12% dearer. Mule types: Hogs 5-11% dearer. Ewes & Cotts: % dearer. Cheviot types: 3-6% dearer. Radnor types: Fully firm.
