1 ISSUE: October 2018 COORDINATOR S REPORT Hi team and hello to October, a magic time of the year! It s impossible not to smile with these gorgeous spring blooms which surround us, not to mention the longer stretches of blue skies and daylight. Here at the Club, we re embracing the new season and doing our best to move forward after such a challenging few months I hope you are feeling a renewed sense of optimism too. Tennis is back, it s only days until the cricket kicks off and we re just loving using our new Rotary deck and garden. We re now officially welcoming new Southern members in to the fold too and it was my pleasure to be a part of our Open Day launch in Hobart at the end of last month. In next month s newsletter, we ll be introducing you to a refreshed New Horizons logo to reflect our state-wide status (don t worry, we ve kept the sun rays!) it s always exciting to debut a new look. We have so much work to do, to ensure that all Tasmanians with disability are offered great sport and rec opportunities now and in to the future. With this in mind, I encourage you to support our Gala this month, either by attending or donating a prize to help with our fundraising- no contribution is too small! Something we don t mention too often in our communications, but has loomed large this year, has been our preparation work for applying for NDIS ILC funding (our DHHS funding which has sustained NHC since 1986 will cease in June next year with the full NDIS rollout). As I type, we are not sure exactly when the grant application round will open, but expect that it will be before November. Rest assured that the NHC staff and Board are giving our all to ensure we are in with the very best chance to have NHC funding continue. 3 A letter from the Chair of the NHC Board, Andrew McCarthy Dear Members, On Saturday 22 nd September AFL Tasmania held its annual Tasmanian Football Awards at the Wrest Point Casino. I, along with my fellow board members were delighted to hear that Belinda Kitto received the 2018 AFL Tasmania Merit Award. As most of you are aware, Launceston hosted the AFL inclusion Carnival in June this year. The award recognises Belinda's effort in bringing together all the elements required in hosting a national sporting event. The AFL were thoroughly impressed by the level of detailed preparation and commented this year's carnival had taken the event to 'another level'. We are very lucky to have a leader that is so passionate and committed to providing amazing opportunities to our club and its members. Whilst it is fantastic to see Belinda receive recognition for the incredible job she does, the award also highlights the great contribution the many New Horizons members, volunteers and supporters made in preparing team lunch packs, helping with overnight accommodation, officiating on match days, cleaning guernsey's, hosting club dinners, and much, much more. On behalf of the Board, I congratulate Belinda on coordinating such a hugely successful event. We thank you for the work you do each and every day! 5 Open Day in Hobart New Horizons launch into the south of Tasmania geared into action on Saturday with an Open Day / Meet and Greet. We were lucky to have some great sports on offer on the day and many turned out to meet Stu and Belinda to showcase what we can offer - we even had some familiar faces from the North turn up to get amongst the action! We met some wonderful new people and some talented athletes who we look forward to`working with and being a part of the New Horizons team. Thanks to Josh from Little Athletics Tasmania, Baxter from AFL Tasmania, Shane and the Netball Tasmania team and Nick from the YMCA Golf Club who came in and ran some exciting activities for our new and existing participants. It was also great to have some cricket gear from Cricket Tasmania and the Futsal and Basketball courts getting a good run. The day was supported by the City of Hobart through an event grant and we thank them for their contribution. Big thanks to Phil and the Southern Netball and Sports Centre for the venue - a great space to showcase our sports. It was also great to have Donna from Espresso Allegro who brought her coffee van along to brew some delicious coffee to the team - thanks Donna! This is an exciting time for the team who will be launching a number of programs in the South into the summer months very soon. Gala Dinner Volunteers needed If you would like to be part of the Gala fun why not volunteer to work on the night! We need 4 or 5 people to run the fun interactive sports games pm or all night 1 volunteer to run the Silent Auction (you need to be a good communicator, good money skills and able to operate an eftpos machine) from pm 2 volunteers to run the Lucky Balloons (good with money and able to operate the eftpos machine) pm Contact Belinda or the NHC office if you can help.

6 We re thinking of all the wonderful cyclists who are in training for the upcoming Police Charity Trust Ride. From 30 th November until the 2 nd December 2018 the Charity Ride will be travelling from Cradle Mountain to Strahan, Tarraleah and Hobart, and will be raising funds for New Horizons Club and Cancer Council Tasmania. We re so very grateful!. Open Day Sale!
