2 Welcome At Sydney Living Museums we are proud to offer your students a wide range of stimulating education programs that combine immersive experiences in authentic historical contexts with focused activities to develop critical, creative and reflective thinking. Our programs invite students to explore past lives and events as they practise the skills and processes of constructing history. A diverse range of topics and curriculum outcomes is covered, from colonisation and the history of contact with Aboriginal people to archaeology and the historical aspects of crime and punishment. We focus on teaching students how to use and evaluate a range of primary and secondary sources while undertaking a historical inquiry. We have carefully developed our programs to link to NSW syllabus outcomes and cross-curriculum priorities, and have adapted them in response to the NSW Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum History K 10. We are also excited to offer a new Stage 5 program that complements the Museum of Sydney exhibition Celestial City: Sydney s Chinese Story. We are proud to once again collaborate with the State Library of New South Wales to offer the popular full-day seminar for Stage 6 History Extension students, The Project. The seminar focuses on historiography and developing students knowledge and skills before they embark on the History Project. We look forward to welcoming you and your students to a Sydney Living Museums program in Mark Goggin Director The Historic Houses Trust of NSW, incorporating Sydney Living Museums, cares for significant historic places, buildings, landscapes and collections. It is a statutory authority of, and principally funded by, the New South Wales Government. The information in this brochure was correct at time of printing but may be subject to change. Photographs James Horan CONTACT This program for students in Stage 4 History (NSW Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum History K 10) incorporates outcomes from Depth Study 6: Expanding Contacts, Topic 6d: Aboriginal and Indigenous Peoples, Colonisation and Contact History. The Museum of Sydney is built on the site of first Government House, a key location in the history of contact between colonists and Aboriginal people. Students explore how the museum interprets contact history through artworks, audiovisual re-creations and static displays, and examine and analyse artefacts from archaeological surveys of the site. They also use written and pictorial sources to understand different experiences of contact between Aboriginal and non Aboriginal people, and assess how the life of at least one Aboriginal person was affected by contact with the colonisers. Photographs Nicholas Watt STAGE 4 ARCHAEOLOGY UNDERFOOT This program for students in Stage 4 History (NSW Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum History K 10) incorporates outcomes from Depth Study 1: Investigating the Ancient Past. Students investigate the layered history of the Hyde Park Barracks. They apply the processes and methods of the historian and the archaeologist as they research pictorial and written sources, as well as archaeological artefacts, to complete a historical inquiry into the lives of some of the different groups of people who lived at the barracks. During a simulated archaeological dig, students work in small groups to excavate, categorise, weigh, measure, sketch and interpret an artefact, helping them to better understand the different approaches archaeologists and historians take to historical investigation. Students analyse and evaluate a range of primary and secondary sources, and reflect on the perspectives and experiences of some of the people who lived at the Hyde Park Barracks. This program helps students to develop their appreciation of history as a study of human experience. Students explore and discuss many of the museum s displays, examine bias in historical artworks and learn about the practice of historical archaeology. 7 STAGE 5 SPECIAL EXCURSION 29 MARCH 12 OCTOBER 2014 Tin Lee certificate of domicile (detail). National Archives of Australia: ST84/1, 1903/ In 1888, several boats carrying Chinese immigrants sailed through Sydney Heads into a crisis that would shape the nation. Chinese people had been arriving in Sydney for over 30 years, but by 1888 growing ill will towards them had broken out into open hostility. Those aboard the SS Afghan, Menmuir and Guthrie were detained and deported under harsh new immigration laws hastily rushed through parliament. The Afghan incident was catalysed by the threat of cheap Chinese labour, compounded by prejudices demonising the Chinese and their way of life. It paved the way for the White Australia policy and the exclusion of Asian immigrants for the next 80 years. Celestial City explores the background to and consequences of this crisis through the stories of Sydney s Chinese people. This is a program for students in Stage 5 History (NSW Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum History K 10). It incorporates outcomes from Depth Study 2: Australia and Asia, Topic 2a: Making a Nation. Students learn about the experiences of Chinese people in Australia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including their reasons for migrating, how they lived and worked, the contributions they made to Australia s development and the effect of the Immigration Restriction Act 1901 on families and individuals. During a guided tour of the exhibition students evaluate the reliability and usefulness of primary and secondary sources, and identify and analyse the reasons for different perspectives and interpretations of these events. MUSEUM OF SYDNEY Mondays to Fridays, Terms 2 & 3 1 hour 30 minutes Maximum 60 students sydneylivingmuseums.com.au/education

Students explore the displays at the Hyde Park Barracks Museum, examining bias in historical artworks, evaluating the reliability of a range of sources and participating in an investigation to answer a specific inquiry question. The investigation combines archaeological artefacts from the barracks collection with archival records. Students analyse a range of primary and secondary sources, use critical thinking skills and interpret history within the context of the actions, values, attitudes and motives of people in the past. Photograph James Horan STAGE 5 THE PYJAMA GIRL MURDER A Case Study This is a program for students in Stage 5 Elective History who are completing the thematic study Crime and Punishment. Students are asked, as historians, how they would investigate the infamous murder of the Pyjama Girl, Linda Agostini, using evidence from various primary and secondary sources. They watch a 1939 film and evaluate its reliability as a source, and discuss perspectives presented by the media of the time. During a guided tour of the museum, students explore, examine and evaluate primary sources relating to the case (including forensic evidence found during the criminal investigation), learning how a wide range of sources provides the evidence required to pursue a historical inquiry. To conclude, students take part in a re-creation of the 1944 murder trial of Antonio Agostini in the museum s courtroom and draw their own conclusions about the surprising legal outcome. JUSTICE & POLICE MUSEUM Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays, all Terms 1 hour 30 minutes Maximum 50 students sydneylivingmuseums.com.au/education 9

10 STAGE 6 SPECIAL EXCURSION A FULL-DAY PROGRAM WITH SYDNEY LEARNING ADVENTURES AND THE BIG DIG This program for students in Stage 6 Ancient History (preliminary course) incorporates outcomes from Part I(a) Investigating the Past: History, Archaeology and Science. Each year Susannah Place Museum, Sydney Learning Adventures and The Big Dig collaborate to offer a full day of history activities in The Rocks. During the program students hear a practising archaeologist discuss their latest work in the field, and they reflect on the roles of archaeology, science and history in contemporary society. Students visit Parbury Ruins, go on a guided tour of The Big Dig archaeological site, and explore Susannah Place Museum and The Rocks Discovery Museum. Photographs James Horan STAGE 6 ARCHAEOLOGY IN THE ROCKS This program for students in Stage 6 Ancient History (preliminary course) incorporates outcomes from Part I(a) Investigating the Past: History, Archaeology and Science. While visiting the conserved interiors of Susannah Place Museum, students learn how archaeologists investigate buildings that are still standing, and how researching both archaeological and archival material produces a richer understanding of the past. Students weigh, measure, classify, describe and draw a 19th-century artefact. They are then led on a 10-minute walk through The Rocks to the conserved archaeological dig site, Parbury Ruins. There, students examine the underground dig and some of the more than 20,000 artefacts that were uncovered. En route they will visit the ruins of a tiny house in nearby Ferry Lane and learn what historical records can tell us about its extraordinary social and political context. SUSANNAH PLACE MUSEUM Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays, all Terms 2 hours Maximum 35 students sydneylivingmuseums.com.au/education 11
